Chapter Twenty-Two
The Holy Katana

Sasuke walked through the forest. He'd walked here as a small child. His mom had been angry with him from wandering so far away from the safety of the slayer's village. Sasuke paused as he came across a large oak tree with a large hollow space in the trunk. He climbed inside, swatting away the cobwebs that had accumulated over the years.
When he was squatting inside of the large trunk, a shaft of moonlight hit a small figure that was silhouetted against the back of the wooden wall. Sasuke smiled at the sight of the alter that he and Satzuka had made all those years ago. He moved forward and laid his hands on the rough wood of the alter. His eyes wandered down to a small metal sword with prayer beads wrapped around the hilt.
He picked it up and held it up to his face. As Sasuke looked into the reflective metal of the blade, memories of his childhood flooded into his mind.

*Flashback*

Sasuke blew the dust off of the alter. Satzuka wrapped the remainder of her prayer beads around her hilt of the tiny katana that Sasuke had made at the forge in their village. She lay it gently on the alter. Sasuke looked at the blade and then up at Satzuka. He knelt before her and took her hand in his.
"I'll always protect you, Satzuka." he said.
The next day Sasuke's father presented him with a short sword. "You're to become a samurai." he said in his gruff voice.
Sasuke looked past his father as he took hold of his sword. Satzuka was sitting on the porch of her family's home and looked at him. Her green eyes filled with tears. She leapt to her feet suddenly.
"You promised to protect me!" she shouted and ran off into her house.
"Satzuka!" he called.
Before he could run after Satzuka, his father caught hold of him. Sasuke closed his eyes and looked down at the sword he held.

*End of Flashback*

Sasuke opened when his eyes, Satzuka stood next to him. He hadn't even heard her come in. The young priestess sat beside him and looked at the alter. A small smile crossed her lips.
"I remember when we made that." she said.
Sasuke nodded, but remained silent.
"Sasuke, I'm sorry I've been so crazy."
"It's no big deal." he said.
Satzuka leaned up against him and closed her eyes. Sasuke looked down at her. He felt a little uncomfortable with her being so close.
"Oh Sasuke." she sighed.
Satzuka lifted her head from his shoulder and looked at him. Satzuka puckered her lips and moved towards him to plant a kiss on him. Sasuke moved suddenly and Satzuka fell forward on the ground. The young samurai scrabbled out of the hollowed tree and lay on the grass. Satzuka climbed out of the hollow, spitting leaves out of her mouth.
"Sasuke!" she screamed.
The young samurai scrambled to his feet and ran back to the camp. When he skidded to a halt in the firelight, Leiko and Yamainu looked up at him. Keiyo, Garou, Kari, and Shadow were all asleep. Sasuke hurriedly curled into a ball and lay down in the shadows. When Satzuka came back, she glared at the sleeping figure that was Sasuke. Leiko and Yamainu shrugged and lay down to sleep.
Sasuke sighed to himself. She'd changed over the past years. He wasn't really sure if he like the change or not yet. As he drifted off to sleep, Sasuke saw Satzuka glaring at him through the flickering firelight.
