Chapter 3: Waking up

Â
What was that? Definitely one of my stranger dreams. But… am I still dreaming? I thought I woke up?
Â
Fey pauses to listen, to feel for anything that might tell her what is going on. Odd, even in dreams I can feel something, see something. I wonder what is going on.
Â
Time passes, but without anything to mark its passage, it could have been minutes or hours. She felt like sighing, but nothing happened. She frowned, mentally of course, and tried again. She never realized just how much tension is relieved in a sigh, but now it is all too clear. She is starting to get restless, wondering why nothing is happening. She never has dreams like this, something is always going on.
Â
If there is such a thing as hell, this could be it. Maybe I should meditate. I don't want to drive myself insane and it looks like I'm going to be here for a while.
Â
With the decision made, Fey stills her thoughts and slowly becomes one with the nothing.
Â
Something appears in the void. A light and it is approaching her. The light forms into a quadruped, and when it gets even closer, she can tell it is a fox. It has silver fur and many tails. Hello, who are you? She asks the fox. She has had dreams with talking animals before, who are known as animal guides, and it is always best to be polite and honest. The fox, which is about the size of a medium-sized dog, circles around her and seems to be studying her. Stand once again in front of her, the fox's form morphs to a more humanoid one with long white hair and golden yellow eyes.
My name is Suzu. Why are you still here? Suzu's voice is light and melodic though her tone is serious.
What do you mean? Am I not in my body anymore? Fey looks around as if her environment might tell her where she is.
No, we are in your body, more or less. You are dead though, you should have moved on. You are human, but you look strange. Where are you from? Suzu looks Fey over again so Fey looks down at herself to see what is so strange. She is wearing a soft cotton fitted t-shirt and thin sweat pants, both a shade of blue and both without prints. She looks back up at Suzu, What is so strange about what I'm wearing? It's not what I was wearing before, but it is comfortable and I like it. You, however, look like something out of a story. What are you wearing? Hemp? If you can choose what to wear here, why something so coarse. Fey stops there and shakes her head, Sorry. I didn't mean to be critical. I've never had a conversation quite like this before.
Suzu smiles and replies, Me neither. You are clearly not from the islands, but you don't look like the barbarians from the mainland either. You kind of look like the northern humans, Ainu I think, but still not exactly.
At this point she registers a weight on her body. It is cold, hard and wrapped around her, like rope or chain. Fey scowls at the idea of being bound and is started to hear a growl behind her. She tries to move, to shake it off, but nothing happens. She tries again after a short pause but gets the same results. These are the chains of the underworld, trying to pull us down. Looking back, Fey sees an angry expression on Suzu's ethereal face.
What! Fey's eyes widen in disbelief. So I really am dead? But, you said `we.' If you are a spirit, why are you so upset? Don't want to go home yet?
It isn't that simple. If I get pulled down it will be a very long time before I can come back, if ever. Normally, though, the human spirit moves on fairly quickly enabling me or another spirit to move in. She pauses, something is happening.
The chain's weight lifts and a moment later she sighs with newly filled lungs. The incredible release of anxious energy makes her smile happily at the feeling of such a simple act. Even as she smiles, sensations come crashing back to her, the hard ground under her back, the light weight of her cloths, the smell of grass and dirt, the sounds of birds in the distance, the light just beyond her eyelids that is so different from the darkness she had been stuck in. Forgetting about Suzu for the moment she opens her eyes she looks up into a beautiful blue sky peeking through the remains of dark clouds.
Â
Now where am I? I was on a plane… Oh my! Did we crash? Fey's memory surges back.
Ah! What is all this? Suzu exclaims. Apparently Suzu can see her memories too.
Â
She gasps and sits up quickly. She looks around and sees that there is a beautiful man to her right, holding a sword of all things. Fey looks him up and down, noticing his odd cloths, and what is that fluffy thing? He is watching her, but he doesn't speak. He is powerful, she can tell, but he doesn't seem forthcoming with any information so she looks around further; there isn't a single thing that would indicate a crash.
There is a beast a little behind him, but the man is blocking her view. There is another man near her, he is short and… green? She looks at him closely, shielding her eyes from the recently revealed sun, and she noticed he is also dressed funny. With a short chuckle, she says quietly to herself, “Hah, I've got to still be dreaming.”
Â
“What's that you're saying?” The little green man squawks in Japanese, but she almost doesn't understand with his accent.
Â
Pausing to translate in her head, with a little help from Suzu, she replies, “Oh sorry, I just supposed I was still dreaming. Though, now that I think about it, I can't remember dreaming in Japanese before. Maybe this means I'm become more fluent, ne?” Fey replies. Feeling the presence of the other man's eyes on her brings her attention back to him.
Â
Sesshoumaru watches. She doesn't seem special; her scent is unusual, but still human. Well, she doesn't reek the way most humans do, but there is something else. Actually, she kind of smells like Inuyasha's wench. The thought of his half-brother hardens his gaze.
Â
Fey gets to her feet and starts brushing her cloths off. Suzu agrees that it might be a good idea. The little one continues to squawk at her. “Hmph, you are not dreaming, idiot woman. Now tell us your name?” The little green man looks at her like she is a suspicious worm, an impressive feat when one must look up instead of down. The taller man remains silent, his expression hard to interpret.
Â
Turning to study the one talking, she pauses for a moment to questions Suzu. What is he? Why is he green?
He is a demon.
A what?
A demon, like me? Well, uglier, but yeah.
Um…
Instead of answering his rudely asked question she counters with one of her own. “What are you?” Not that she doubted Suzu, but they did just meet and better safe than sorry.
Â
Jaken, the green demon, seems shocked. “Are you saying you've never seen a youkai before?” She shakes her head in the negative and asks, “What is a youkai and why should I have seen one before? You are not all green, right?”
Â
“Idiot human, of course not. I am Jaken, humble servant of Lord Sesshoumaru, Taiyoukai of the Western Lands. As you can clearly see, he is not green.”
Â
As Jaken indicates the taller man with a very respectful bow, Fey turns her attention back to this Sesshoumaru. I didn't understand much of that, but did he say lord? And no, he isn't green, though Wow, look at those eyes.
Suzu gasps, Wow. He looks good enough to eat.
Fey's eyes widen in shock at the extremely sexual images flowing through her head from Suzu. She clears her throat in an attempt to calm down. Please stop that. She bows politely and addresses the taller man. “Nice to meet you, Lord Sesshoumaru. My name is Fey. Are we in Japan, then?”
Â
He makes no move to answer her question. Instead he continues to study her, trying to figure out why the Tenseiga had desired to resurrect this seemingly insignificant mortal. She is taller than most, but slender and obviously a foreigner. Very odd clothing. Rather like Kagome's. If she acts like Kagome I'll kill her. I don't have time to baby sit.
Â
Though she had asked Sesshoumaru, the little green one speaks up again. “Japan? We are on the western side of the island Konshu. Where else would we be?” The little youkai continues ranting. Meanwhile, Fey raises an eyebrow at just how rude he is and says under her breath in English, “Where else indeed.”
Â
With a sigh and a glance back at Sesshoumaru, she bends down to pick up her stuff. While doing so, she asks all present, “So any ideas why I'm here?”
Â
“You don't know?” Sesshoumaru finally speaks. Fey is very glad she is looking away to hide her sudden blush at the sound of his voice. Suzu practically purrs in her mind, Stop that, you aren't helping. She shakes her head in the negative. “No.”
Â
This is getting me no where and I'm wasting time. Sesshoumaru turns around and begins to walk away.
Â
Still gathering her things, Fey gaps for a moment, caught off-guard by his abrupt actions. He's not one for wasting words, is he? She looks up and can't believe he is just going to leave her here. She then notices the two-headed beast with a little girl perched on top as they turned to follow Sesshoumaru. The little green one runs after him, like a puppy. She doesn't know how to interpret their indifference to whether she follows or not. She looks around again at the complete lack of people or roads and decides that she should follow. Even if it is just until she can find someone else to help her.
Â
She hastens to gather the last of her belongings before they get too far away. What odd things. Suzu muses. A few meters away, Sesshoumaru walks and listens. He knows the samyÅshyÅ have been near by for some time, staying out of sight but something is different.
Fey has gathered everything and jogs to catch up. She walks behind the two-headed Ah-Un for a little while, not really sure what to do.
