Listen to the Rain - Chapter 1
Small slivers of sunlight managed to break through the thick layers of fog that hovered over the breathless landscape, stretching miles upon end; An unmistakable mark of the Sengoku Jidai. Although dark with the aura of demons, the tiny strands of brightness escaping from the heavens made a demonic aura almost unrecognizable to the likes of a mortal. The amount of sunlight may have been minimal, but proved great enough in lightening the spirits of the young girl. Tall clumps of wheat swayed two and fro as an ominous wind stretched across the land; She paid no mind to the bitterness.
Bouncing around an open field with much enthusiasm, Rin gathered handfuls of wild flowers she intended to give to her Lord. She grasped the bouquet tightly with her tiny hands. It seemed as if the bunch of flowers could spring forth any moment, breaking free from the tight grasp she held on them. Being perhaps the most beautiful flower arrangement she had ever put together, which had been one of countless amounts mind you, it was made up of an array of colors, each and every one seeming to have its own illuminating glow. Ranging from violet to magenta and bright orange to an iridescent yellow, staring for just a brief moment at the bouquet could captivate its spectator, transporting them into a blissful state of mind, the state of mind the young girl practically lived in.
The heavenly colors she held in her hand gave her a miraculous glow, and her cheerful nature and the untainted smile stretching across her face was empowering enough for one to mistake her for a angel. The flowers, in return, were simply the halo above her head, adding to the innocence already existing within her. For everything about her - her good natured spirit, her smile, her laughter - could sooth even the most troubled of souls.
Frail as she may be, she was certainly capable of exerting considerable portions of effort when it came to Him. Anything less than perfection would be simply a waste of time, not to mention an embarrassment in herself, and more significantly he who is responsible for her life. The hint of dissatisfaction spreading across his features was enough to send her heart shattering into a million pieces.
Plucking stem by stem from the soiled earth, Rin had now become completely consumed with her task; Humming to herself as she bounced from spot to spot. With a smile that consumed her entire her face, Rin giggled to herself, “Oh I can’t wait until Lord Sesshomaru returns! I’m sure he’ll love these flowers I’ve picked!”
She continued her routine. As her dark bangs swept the ground upon which she stood, she examined only the most eye-catching flowers, the type which mesmerized, fascinated, and enthralled. She gazed tentatively at each one, as if going over a series of life altering decisions in her mind. In reality she was merely analyzing whether it was good enough for her Lord.
Although she was only an 8 years old girl, Sesshomaru and the small, fidgety toad demon, Jaken, taught her well. Over the course of their time together she had become quite educated for the likes of a homeless child. Providing her with clothing and company only fueled her desire to impress both demons who held tight watch over her. She knew that despite whatever it may be, her aristocratic Lord only accepted the finest of things. Revealing why she put forth an incredible amount of dedication is making her bouquet, or making anything for that matter. She wanted nothing more than to please the one who provided for her, the one she looks up to, and the one person she has to attach herself to.
Her orange kimono was now grazed entirely with a light soot from the ground, making it no longer a bright orange but a dim bronze. Her focus was set on her bouquet so much that she was completely oblivious to the small patches of dirt also covering her face in desultory locations. Bright as her smile may be, one could not help but be drawn to the large circle of dirt on her chin, as well as the dust which accumulated under her eyes. Looking frighteningly similar to that day she was almost taken to the netherworld thanks to those mangy wolves.
Almost completely covered in dusk, skin barely recognizable, Rin stood tall and laughed to herself. The bundle of flowers in her hand were so thick it took nearly both sets of fingers to keep them from breaking free of her grasp. Each stem may have been relatively thin, but proved more troublesome in holding on to in large numbers. Breathing in their sweet scent, that famous smile once again lit up her face. What a pleasure to the senses her bundle of flowers had become, to both the eyes and the nose. Quite simply, if it were not known that an 8 year old constructed such an enthralling bunch of flowers, one might assume it were done by a master of gardening - an art which aristocrats pay generously for. Regardless of much analysis, Rin simply enjoyed the sight of her creation, her mind never steering away from what her Lord will think as he accepts them.
“Rin” called a deep, yet smooth voice.
“Ah! Lord Sesshomaru! you’ve returned at last!” the small girl yelped. It’s a wonder how her high-pitched, childish tone never seemed to aggravated him.
Holding both hands behind her back, she smiled and quietly giggled to herself. He stood with both feet planted in the very spot where he first appeared, knowing precisely the objects Rin worked so diligently at to keep hidden behind her frail exterior. There was no expression upon his face, neither signs of happiness nor signs of disappointment. His tall figure and icy glare was enough to send any mortal, or demon for that matter, into a perpetual state of fear. But not young Rin. Having grown accustomed to the language of his body, and his way of speaking, she was unaffected by what others would stop at nothing to characterize as rude and unbecoming.
Unable to keep the bouquet hidden any longer, she burst into a marathon of cheerful laughter. Holding the bundle of colorful, sweet-smelling flowers up to her Lord, a bright smile stretched across her face. She held them as high as she could, just above her head and yet only reaching his obi.
“What are these for, Rin” he stated.
“For YOU OF COURSE my Lord!” she said continuing to burst with excitement as she presented to him what she had spent so much time on making.
“Where is Ah-Un, Rin?. . . And where is Jaken?” he replied back.
“Oh, just over behind the shrubs my Lord!” she stated, the cheerfulness never leaving her tone.
Unable to let the smile slip off her face, Rin held the flowers high, proud of what she had created. He took the bundle of flowers in his claws, knowing this would please her. She did not expect any type of reaction, just for him to take them. That was a good enough sign that he was pleased. For Rin has been with Sesshomaru and Jaken for quite some time, and she was yet to see any type of emotion upon his face. Perhaps when the demon Naraku had been defeated, she witnessed a slight tinge of happiness in his expression, but was that truly happiness? - no. So no expression was a good one! It seemed that she was quite capable of reading him at times, whether he was aware of it or not. Jaken, however, was not so good at this.
Walking into the clearing was a large, two headed dragon demon known as Ah-Un. Skipping frantically behind the large creature was Jaken. Seeing no need to raise his voice, Lord Sesshomaru spoke to the four of them- “I‘ll be leaving now.”
Where they were going Rin never knew, and she feared not at where they would end up. As she confided 100% in her master, never doubting him in any way. They could have entered the final circle of Hell, but as long as Lord Sesshomaru remained in her sight no worries were able to forge their way into her tiny heart. He was her savior. . . Her master. . . Her Lord. She wanted only to please him for taking her under his care. Although Ah-Un looked after her mostly, his cold heart did a poor job at convincing the young girl that he cared not for her very existence.
Day break turned to night fall before the tall, lean demon halted in his steps. Gazing upon the fog filled horizon, he paused.
“Where might our destination be milord?” piped Jaken, who stood a few feet back.
Remaining silent, the demon lord stood motionless, eyes fixed on what could only be seen through his vision.
---
“Do you desire power so much? …. Why do you seek power, my son?”
“The path I walk is the way of supreme conquest, and it is power that will reveal the way for me.”
“Heh.. supreme conquest .... Tell me Sesshomaru, have you someone to protect?”
“Protect? …. I Sesshomaru, have no need of such.”
---
Continuing to glare out at the open horizon, which to Rin and Jaken seemed no different than any other horizon they had previously laid eyes on, Lord Sesshomaru knew precisely what his gaze was set upon and knew what fury the moons ahead would bring.
---
The Inu-no-Taisho sprang forth in his truest form, leaving to fulfill his purpose in life.
Sesshomaru was sure his father’s purpose had already been fulfilled. He found two mates, left he and his younger brother to gather any inheritance after his death, and built one of the most fabled empires in all of Japan. In the eyes of Sesshomaru, what other purpose could there possibly be. Never would he be able to understand the sacrifice his father made, and what benefit rose from his death. The Great Dog demon gave up everything, an empire he spent lifetimes construting, all for the sake of - a mortal woman.
As he sprang up into the night sky, glowing with his own demonic aura as well as the fluorescent moonlight, Inu-no-Taisho raced through the sky with every ounce of speed the great demon possessed. That night, Sesshomaru knew his father would meet his fate.
“Such a fool.. And I am still without the Tetsusaiga or the So’unga. Without either sword I will not be able to rule the Western Lands. I may be a great demon such as he, but without the power he wields I will not be able to suppress the land that he so easily did.”
His father fought, and in no condtion to do so.
With that came the Inu-no-Taisho’s tragic demise, and so to did his kingdom fall. Although no demon alive tempted to take the land which belonged to such a powerful figure, it had wasted away, occupied only by the lowest of specimens. An empty wasteland had it become, and those who so diligently served under the Great Dog demon had long spent their time mourning, and eventually abandoned the land as well.
“I will surpass his level of power, and with that I will become a ruler he was never able to be; One with no limits, no restraints.”
Sesshomaru then vowed to himself that the Inu-no-Taisho would be forgotten, and those who spend their lives mourning his death will soon have a new Lord to serve under.
“Lord Sesshomaru? Should Ah-Un and I rest by a nearby tree for now?” the young girl called out, snapping him out of his thoughts.
Will update soon! Looks to be that this story will be somewhere around 7 or 8 chapters. :)
