Chapter 1
67 years earlier…
Smoke billowed from the burning village, casting a shadow over the lands surrounding it. Screams echoed throughout the forest, screams of anguish and pain caused by the white-hot flames. Glowing red eyes surveyed the gruesome scene with excitement. It belonged to the shadow demon Rinath. He was standing upright, his appearance human if not for the long claws that grew out of his hands. His fangs were elongated, sticking out of his mouth, leaking a yellowish acid. A dark hooded cloak concealed the rest of his face and body.
His eyes darted to a corner of the small village where a woman was running rapidly into the forest. His eyes flashed and he took off at a high speed, overtaking her before she even got there. Spinning around, Rinath let out a snarl, stopping the brown-haired woman.
She eyed him carefully, drawing the bundle in her arms closer to her. “You will not harm him.”
Rinath let out a growling laugh, “It is not him I intend to harm but that will happen very soon. You have lied and therefore, betrayed me. I know what you are. A human with the power to shape shift. That is why I could not pick up the scent of a human around you. You lied,” He paused to narrow his eyes at her, “coming to me as a demon, but I saw the child. Right now, show him to me.”
Shaking, she obeyed him. She removed the blanket from the young half-demon’s face. The first noticeable thing about the demon was the two furry ears on top of his head. They were partially hidden by his short brown hair, but they twitch with every sound. His amber eyes flashed as he looked at his father, not entirely recognizing him as during the four years of his life, he had only seen his father once.
That meeting had not lasted long, and it was what had given away his mother’s true identity. Two black wings also poked out of the blanket and also a fluffy brown tail. He squeaked slightly at his father’s snarl.
“Rika…” He growled out the woman’s name and she saw the look on his face. His hand raised and he swiped at Rika, missing the child but making a gash from her right shoulder to her left hip.
Rika gasped and fell to the cold ground, grabbing the bundle, even when she was wounded. As she lie there, she touched a white mark on the half-demon’s forehead. His wings disappeared instantly. Rika managed to gasp out a message, “Shiro…run…”
Rinath growled and pounced on her, sinking his fangs into her neck, the acid running down his fangs and into the wound. Blood covered his claws as he dug them into her stomach. His next message came out in a growl, “And now for the boy.” He looked around and found that Shiro was nowhere to be found. The air was so thick with the smell of blood that he couldn’t pick up his scent. With a frustrated grunt, he pulled away from the body of his dead mate and stood up. “Seconain.”
The bird demon promptly landed on the ground beside him, about the size of a wolf. He spread his wings and bowed his head in respect, “Yes, Master?”
Rinath looked towards the forest, “Find Shiro and bring him to me alive. I will be the one who kills him. Do not tell anyone he is my son.”
Seconain decided to ask an innocent question, “You are ashamed of him?”
Rinath growled, “A half-demon is worth nothing in this world. That is why I must kill him. He is not worthy of the army I am building. Now bring him to me.”
Seconain bowed and flew off, wings flapping every now in then making his flight soundless. If he was to find Shiro, it must be done quietly. He suddenly dove down, following the sound of soft crying.
