Chapter 5:
in the Gaze of Solemnity ~ Smashing Pumpkins

Normal POV ~~~~

The sun didn't rise the next day, it was cold and bleak. Storm clouds covered every inch of the sky, and it seemed as though daylight would never come again. Kagome sat up in her bed, her alarm clock ringing loudly. Kagome had not gotten much sleep that night.
"Shut up!" she yelled through a yawn as she turned off the annoying beep. Kagome got out of bed lazily and dressed into her school uniform. "I think I would rather fight demons, then go to school." she yawned again. After her things were packed and she was dressed she ran downstairs.
"Morning mom. No time for breakfast got to meet Hojo. Bye!" her mother gazed at her as she ran out the door, 'Hojo?' she mouthed in question. But she shrugged if off and continued serving the rest of the family.
I have twenty minutes before I have to be to school, that is plenty of time. Kagome thought to herself as she jumped in the well. Kagome ran to Lady Kaede's hut without stopping for anything. The sun hadn't quite risen here either, it was only a slight overcast, but a storm was coming.
"Miroku?" she asked as she ran into the hut. Sango looked up at her,
"Kagome!" she hugged her tightly and smiled joyously.
"Hey Sango, it's good to see you!" Kagome smiled and hugged her back. "How is Miroku? I heard he was tortured. Is he okay? I had horrible dreams last night that he was being tortured, and dying."
"He isn't here actually. He went out to the hot spring with Inuyasha. They said that they needed to talk. It was really bad though. He also feels really bad for telling on you two. Kikyo had hung him upside down from a tree, she the proceeded to spin him around in cirlces, causing him to get violently ill. After that she beat him with a stick. It was dreadful, or so he described it as." Sango said looking at Kagome with worried eyes.
"That is horrible! The poor guy." Kagome put a hand to her mouth as she gasped at the thought.
"He is really okay though. All he needed was bed-rest. He is back to his normal self again." Sango gave a sarcastic smile and rolled her eyes.
"Oh, well, as long as he is okay. I was just so worried." Kagome sighed with relief. "Now I have to get to school. I'll be back tomorrow night. Tell them I stopped by and send my love." Kagome tried to hug Sango again but something jumped in her way.
"KAGOME! I WAS SO SCARED YOU BIG MEENIE!" a ball of fluff lay in Kagome's arms.
"Shippo! I am so sorry!" Kagome hugged Shippo close and continued to apologize.
"I haven't seen you in almost a month! Why did you leave me?!" Shippo looked up at Kagome with hurt eyes.
"I am sorry Shippo, I will explain tomorrow night when I come back. I have to go though Shippo, all I can say is I am sorry and I missed you too." she hugged the Kitsune again and he hugged her back.
"Okay Kagome. Promise you will come back tomorrow?" Kagome nodded her head, Shippo jumped into Sango's arms and Kagome smiled as she waved good bye.

Inuyasha's POV ~~~~

"So Miroku, I think we should talk." I stated to the monk as he relaxed against a rock.
"What now Inuyasha?" his voice sounded irritated and yet intrigued.
"Well, Kagome and I are together now, I guess," I thought about it for a moment, then continued on, "but I don't know if we are going to be like we were before."
"What do you mean by that?" Miroku asked half-heartedly.
"Well, I don't know if Kagome is going to want to..." I was trying to be sensitive for once, so I tried to word this carefully, "engage in romantic involvements."
"What are you talking about Inuyasha? I don't really feel like playing mind games."
I growled at Miroku, he was a dirty lecher, of course he knew what I was talking about, "I still want to sleep with Kagome! Jeez!" I scoffed at his fake look of surprise.
"I knew that, I just wanted you to say it." he laughed heartily and I growled deeper.
"So what should I do? I don't know if she will want to after what happened. I mean, even if it is here and not in her time, will she still want to, or will she be afraid now?"
"I don't know. Why don't you ask her?" Miroku said easily.
"Well, what if she gets mad at me?" I thought of making Kagome mad, she was quite frightening when she was angry.
"Just talk to her about it. I can't help you out this time Inuyasha." Miroku closed his eyes and began to relax in the spring. I sat back, trying to relax, but I couldn't.
"Two days... just two days till I see her... only two... two days... two sunsets....two days..." I mumbled to myself. Noticing Miroku's heavy sighs I stopped and kept my mouth shut for the rest of our stay at the hot spring.

The day was suddenly better then it had been in the morning. The storm clouds had, for the most part, passed, and the sun was shinning over the trees, casting mysterious shadows on the forest floor; however, it was still rather crisp.
"Oh Inuyasha, Miroku," Sango stood up as we walked into the hut, "Kagome stopped by this morning. She sends her love." Sango smiled happily as she moved to continue talking to Kaede.
"Kagome?! Is she okay? What did she need?" I was becoming slightly paranoid.
"She is fine, she just had a bad dream about Miroku, she wanted to make sure that he was okay. After what Kikyo did, I am surprised he is." Sango put her arm around Miroku's waist.
"You underestimate me love. But it was your love that kept me holding on." Miroku sighed deeply and I noticed him reaching for Sango's backside.
"You pervert!" she yelled at him as she walked away to finish her conversation with Kaede.
"It's cute how she acts all reserved in front of other people, but alone you two are animals." I whispered to Miroku.
"How would you know?" he looked at me suspiciously and I smiled deviously, perking my ears to look like horns.
"Ghastly! You are worse then I am." Miroku backed away and we began to laugh. The laughter was momentary though, I felt a strange presence. I didn't know what it was, but I could sense something unnatural moving toward the hut. Kaede, Sango, Shippo, Miroku and Kirara, were all on alert too. We all walked outside and began to gaze around. Nothing could be seen.
"What is it?" Sango asked, taking her place at Miroku's side. He held her close, trying to protect her from the sinister force we felt approaching.
"I can't smell anything, or hear anything! My senses are blocked!" I shouted trying to figure out what was wrong with my powers. I wasn't due to be human again for two weeks at least.
"I am scared!" Shippo jumped into my arms and hid his face, "I wish Kagome were here."
"I am glad she isn't here. Whatever, that force is, it isn't good. I am glad she is safe." I sighed deeply as the force got stronger. A dark cloud hid the sun and all that could be seen was a black silouette.
"Inuyasha. Your pitiful friends may go. I just want you, half-breed!" that voice sounded familiar, but yet I couldn't place it.
"WHOSE VOICE IS THAT?" I screamed, the others looked at me and shrugged, they couldn't place it either. The wind picked up and began to howl loudly. I couldn't hear anything but wind surrounding my body, I was lifted off the ground, I threw Shippo down to Sango, who caught him gracefully. I rose off the ground and into a giant black bubble which contorted into a giant prism.
"What is this!?" I screamed but my voice was lost to the shell surrounding me. What is this? Am I going to die? Who is behind this? These thoughts flooded through my head but the last one that passed through was, Thank god Kagome is safe. Then I passed out in my new prison.

Kagome's POV ~~~~

"Inuyasha!" I called loudly, with every ounce of my energy as I lay dying on the forest floor. "What is happening? Inuyasha! I can't leave you! If I die, promise me you'll come with me! INUYASHA!" I felt my breath catch in my throat. I saw the colors of the forest swirl in mists of greens, browns and blues. I could feel my breaths shortening, as I saw Kikyo appear, a black prison engulfed Inuyasha as Kikyo kissed him, he kissed her back without hesitation, shattering my heart into a thousand pieces. My breath was stopping, and I collapsed on the forest floor, with every ounce of my strength I screamed to Inuyasha. "SIT!"
"Miss Higarashi! If you wish to command your dog, please do it at home. In the meantime please stay awake for my class." I lifted my head off the desk, I felt warm tears on my face. I looked up at Mr. Takizawa, my history teacher.
"I am sorry sir. I don't feel well. I am sorry." I gathered up my belongings and walked out of class. I intended to go lay down in the nurses office, but then I decided I had to find out what my dream meant. Surely it was just a dream, but it was so vivid. I could actually feel my breath shorten, and the blood oozing from my body. I looked down at my stomach, where the wound had been, half expecting to see my uniform covered in blood. "Nah, it was just a crazy dream, like the one I had about Miroku. I should just go home and study. After all it is last block anyway.
I walked home and went inside, I explained to my mother what happened, and that was why I was home early. She got slightly upset that I walked out of class, but then told me I should go check on my friends. She said that having my 'special powers' concerned her because maybe I could see things. I decided I couldn't wait till tomorrow to go, so I packed the usual items that accompanied me to Feudal Japan and I went into the well.
I walked to the hut, and when I didn't hear raised voices I sighed with relief. But my relief was short lived, I could sense something in the atomosphere. I couldn't pin-point it though.
"Hey guys." I walked in seeing everyone sitting on the floor talking, every one except, "Where is Inuyasha!?" I asked hurriedly.
"We don't know. There was a terrible, evil presence and Inuyasha was swept up into a black prism, we don't know what happened after that. There was a blinding light and we all collapsed, by the time we could see again Inuyasha was gone," Sango stated.
"and so was the evil force, just as quickly as it had come, it was gone." Miroku finished. I noticed Shippo was in the corner, he usually hugged me, even in times of tragedy.
"Shippo?" I asked him gently, I noticed he was crying. "What's wrong? We will find him, he will be okay."
"I know Kagome. But he said he was glad you weren't here, he didn't want you to get hurt, but now you are here, and you are going to get hurt." I hugged Shippo and he hugged me back crying still.
"I'll be fine Shippo don't worry." I said reassuringly.
"What did bring you back here Kagome? You said you wouldn't be back until late tomorrow." Sango said looking curiously up at me.
"Well, yeah. I had a weird dream in History class. I just wanted to see if you guys were okay." I said looking anywhere but into my friends gaze.
"So you are going to get hurt? You had a vision didn't you?" Shippo said rather calmly for someone who was just crying.
"No, it was about Miroku again. I don't know why I am so worried about you." I smiled at him, but apparently this evil sinister force had been worse then I thought it was. "Alright guys, time to find Inuyasha. Do you have any idea who, or what this force was?"
"No, the voice sounds so familiar but I can't place it." Miroku said.
"Well, male or female?" Please don't be Kikyo, please don't be Kikyo. I prayed to myself.
"I am pretty sure it was male." They said together.
"Okay, good."
"The voice was very specific, it wanted nothing to do with us, it wanted only Inuyasha. That is why we think it only encompassed him in the black prism." Sango made the synopsis, apparently trying to recall anything she could from the event.
"Okay, well, lets go." I stood up and grabbed my bow and quiver, which were always by the door for me to use at my disposal.
"We don't even know where to look though." Miroku stated, standing up and getting ready none the less.
"I know we don't but I can't just sit here. I have to go out and do something!" I tried not to shout, but I was.
"We have to form a plan." Miroku said calmly.
"No, we have to save Inuyasha's life! He would do the same for any of us!"
"I know he would. Jeez, you sound more and more like him every second. Alright, you are the powerful reincarnate, lets go." Miroku gave in and I ran outside. They all followed me closely.
"Shippo, stay here I don't want you to get hurt." I said in a motherly tone.
"No, I am not going to be left behind while my best friends go out to explore an unknown sinister force!" he shouted and jumped onto Sango's shoulder, determined to come along.
"Okay." I smiled at him and we continued to walk.
"Uhh, Kagome?" Miroku asked, I lifted my head to inform him I was listening, "Where are we going?" he asked cautiously.
"I don't know. I am just following my senses. I feel a presence, and its coming from somewhere beyond that mountain." I stated rationally.
"We'll never get there. That mountain his hundreds of miles away." Miroku complained.
"Do you have a better idea?" I asked turning around to look at him.
"Actually..."
Miroku was a genius. Sango and Miroku rode on Kirara, and Hachi came too, carrying me and Shippo. Soon Inuyasha, we will save you, hold on! I thought as we made our way past the mountains.
Inuyasha's POV ~~~~

I awoke some time later, I was still stuck in the prism and I couldn't see anything but black walls. I still didn't have any of my abilities. I could hear someone walking around outside the prism however. There was a miniscule ray of light coming down from the top of the prism, barely enough for me to see my own hands in front of me. My hands? I don't have claws! I looked down at my hair, it was black. I had been transformed.
"Why are we doing this again?" that voice was so familiar.
"Because, we both hate Inuyasha, and need to get him out of the way. Then, once you kill him, I can comfort Kagome, and her and I will be together forever, and your brother will be dead." another familiar voice. His speech gave the one away though, it was Sesshomaru. He must be Kouga. It couldn't be anyone else.
"Kouga," my suspicions were confirmed, "I know that you want this, human," I could almost hear Sesshomaru shuddering at the thought of loving a human, "and I want my brother dead, sure enough. However, why must we go through all this? Can't we just kill him?"
"No, because if we just kill him then she wont see how I came to rescue him. That has to be known. What I do is run in moments after its too late, and explain how I sensed his danger. Then she will like me more, and over time of comforting her, she will fall in love with me too." Kouga replied as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"I see. What if she just goes to her own time?" Sesshomaru asked in almost a mocking tone.
"She wont! She will stay here because she loves me! I know she does!" Kouga yelled back. I laughed out loud at him, I stopped quickly, but he must not have heard me anyway, he continued to mosey on about his business.
"Kagome... Don't come for me. Please, I don't want you to see this... Please don't come for me." I whispered into the prism.
"I see something Kouga. I believe its them. I see the monk, the slayer, the Kitsune, and the wench." Sesshomaru stated.
"DON' T CALL KAGOME A WENCH!" I heard Kouga yell. I smiled, at least he defended Kagome. "Now, they are rapidly approaching. I will flee and listen from a safe distance." Kouga must have left, but I couldn't see. I listened to anything I could here, all the noise I heard was the sound of blood pumping in my body, rushing through my head, and my heart beating steadily. The silence was driving me mad. I thought I was going to go crazy when I heard a voice calling for me, as though it were sent to snap me back to reality.
"INUYASHA! WHERE ARE YOU!?" it was Kagome. My heart leapt out of my chest.
"Kagome!" I tried to yell but the sound was trapped.
"Sesshomaru, where is Inuyasha!?" she sounded angry and full of hope.
"He is in the prism which sits behind me." Sesshomaru stated easily.
"Release him!" Kagome yelled, her anger rising even more.
"I am afraid I can't do that. You see, it is all part of my plan. If I let him go, then my plan will have failed. I just wanted you to watch him die. Where is the rest of your friends? Don't they care what happens to your precious Inuyasha?" Sesshomaru's voice was filled with malice. I growled, but it was a normal human growl, with none of the anger it was meant to display.
"They are outside, I made them stay out there. Please Sesshomaru. I'll do anything if you let him go." Kagome still sounded angry, but her voice sounded on the verge of tears.
"NO KAGOME! Don't give in, I can get out. Please just leave!" I screamed as loud as my mortal lungs would allow, but the sound was absorbed by the prism.
"You will do anything ?" I didn't hear a response from Kagome, but she must have nodded, because Sesshomaru continued, "Well then. Kill yourself."
"Let Inuyasha go first. I want to witness him in safety." Kagome stated defiantly.
"Kill herself?" I whispered into the abyss. "I can't let her do that!" I stood in the prism. It felt like I was trying to walk on water. I wobbled as I stood, and knocked into the sides of the prism.
"Inuyasha? Sesshomaru, what is happen in there? Why is it moving like that?" Kagome's voice was panicky as I continued to bumble about inside.
"Oh, he is just trying to escape. He doesn't realize its impenetrable, by any force. He also can't escape through the breathing hole in the top." Sesshomaru replied.
"Damn, that is where I was heading." I sulked back down leaning against my prisons wall. "FUCK!" I screamed into my hands through grinted teeth.
"Inuyasha!" I heard Kagome calling to me, but I knew I couldn't call back, so I didn't bother. I just stared blankly at where I thought she might be standing. Wishing I could see her again.
"Do we have a deal Kagome? You kill yourself, and I let your mutt go?"
"No one calls Inuyasha that! Not even you! The only person who would say that is Kouga." Kagome stated she must have realized it was a trap. "No, I wont kill myself for him. In fact you know what, I don't care if you kill him." she sounded confident in her words, but I could still tell her voice was shaking.
"You are pathetic." Sesshomaru laughed his words, "If you insist, all I have to do is snap and the prism will collapse, killing Inuyasha slowly, as he screams out with pain. Though, we wont be able to hear him. Upsetting isn't it?" I could almost hear him smiling.
"Inuyasha! If you can hear me, MOVE!" Kagome demanded.
Move? Where can I go? My questions were soon answered, a pink light came through the top of prism. "What the fuck is that?" I whispered. I closed my eyes to shield the light, and when I opened them I closed them again in disbelief.
"Kagome!" I hugged her kneeling form closely. "How did you get in here? Was that pink light you? Why are you risking your life? Could you hear me telling you to go back? Can I kiss you?" I laughed slightly, her site made me so happy.
"You are human? I came through the prism using my 'powers', yes the light was me, because I love you, no I couldn't hear you, please gods do." she smiled as she finished answering all my questions. I touched her lips to mine, immediately coasting my tongue into her mouth, I allowed my hands to roam around her body and up her shirt slightly. She pulled away slightly and I immediately felt bad for trying to move to fast.
"Sorry," I mumbled. Forgetting her question.
"Oh, its not you. I want you Inuyasha." I smiled at her, and wrapped my arms tightly around her. "I just think that it would be best if we got out of here first." she smiled and giggled slightly.
"Good point. How do we get out of here?" I asked her inquisitively.
"Well, I was thinking of trying to go the way I got in, but I don't know how to attach you to me. I guess if you just hold on to me I can try that way." she said still thinking about our escape.
"How did you get in there!?" Sesshomaru yelled through the prism. I heard him stomp off somewhere.
"Okay, I am going to try now. Just hold on, for dear life, no matter what. Okay?" I nodded to show that I would not let go of her. I held her waist tightly and she began to summon her powers.
A strong electrical surge raged through my body. I felt my senses returning, my claws grew back out, and I noticed my hair was back to its shiny silver color. Kagome's light became stronger and I could feel more currents of energy running through my body as the pink aura around her grew wider, and stronger. The prism walls expanded and gave way to her miraculous light. No longer imprisoned in the prism her light was too bright for my sensitive eyes. I shut them tight trying to hold on, as my arms became weaker against her power, I felt her rest her arms on my shoulders and I knew that it was almost over. I pulled her close to my body and I felt us slowly descending to the ground. I landed on my knees and allowed Kagome to fall onto me. Mustering up some courage I opened my eyes. I could see Kagome breathing rapidly. The area we were locked inside, looked like a castle watchtower.
"Kagome?" I held her gently out in my arms, and I saw her eyes lazily open. I smiled at her and she began to cry happily.
"Inu.... yasha." she collapsed onto my chest and I held her close again. I heard noises from outside, I didn't want to get the attention of Sesshomaru and Kouga so I gently picked up Kagome and walked outside.
There sat our best friends. There faces lit up and I placed Kagome next to Miroku and Sango.
"Take here away from here. I have to finish this," I turned back to the watchtower, "alone." I added. I walked back into the watchtower and yelled to Sesshomaru and Kouga to come out.
"Oh great, he is back. Your indestructible prism sucked Sess! Let me finish him." Kouga looked into my eyes growling. I laughed devilishly and smiled.
"The moment of truth!" Kouga yelled as he charged at me.
