Long Lost
Chapter 1, Meet the Family
Tanaka leaned down at the lake, cupping her hands together as she picked up some of the cool, crystal water and she splashed some on her burning cheeks. It was something she had inherited from her mother-cheeks that flared up a fiery, hot red for no reason at all. She looked up towards the sky, where the clouds were sitting softly and gently. She smiled lightly as she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She took another deep breath, smelling the flowers of the nearby field, tasting the ocean water salt on her tongue, she could hear her elder daughters voice as she told her little sister not to stray too far as the younger child giggled and chased a butterfly around the field by the brook and ocean. She opened her eyes again, and looked down towards her stomach. She was two months along, yippee for her. She was carrying the most deadly demons child, but she was glad she was. She looked towards the field again, smiling when she saw her elder daughter, Hoshiko, flying after her younger half sister, a super quick, feisty, energetic hanyou girl called Kohana. Tanaka giggled before she stood up again, and grabbed her bow and arrow that her step father had made for her. It was made of the finest wood, and was engraved with patterns of real gold and had jewels scattered along it. Inside was a quarter of the Shikon shards that she had been collecting from demons who passed by. They didn't make her any stronger, but she had been a previous protector of it until she had been called away to live with her mate, so she felt that she had a right to carry them around. After all, they were worth it, and she was strong enough.
“Hoshi, Hana!” Tanaka called to her daughters. The two girls stopped their playful antics as they turned to face their mother. “Let's go girls.” With that, the two girls raced off towards their mother, each racing the other. As expected, it was a tie. Tanaka smiled at her daughters as she picked up the basket that held some herbs and flowers that she needed to restock on. “Ready girls?” Kohana, her younger daughter, an inu hanyou, nodded as she smiled a bubbly smile and grabbed her mother's hand while she twirled a small flower in her other hand. The elder daughter, who went by Hoshiko, let her wings rest gently against her back as she landed gracefully. Hoshiko was a phoenix hanyou, which was a very rare demon type to come across.
“Yes mother.” Hoshiko said softly before the trio began to walk back to their mother's village. They lived in a small village that was very simple and sweet. Tanaka was the priestess there, and she had been ever since she was 21. She was now 83 years old, but she appeared to only be 19 years old. Immortality can do that a girl, she supposed. Akasagi was the town she guarded, and everyone greatly respected her there, even though she was mated to a demon of very high standards (AN: If you haven't figured out who her mate is yet, then that's kinda sad…lol…no offence to those of you who haven't yet, just go back and look at the clues. And for those of you who do know, good job-I'll explain why in the next chapter, even though he appears in this one). After about ten minutes of walking down a path in silence, they came to the bridge that leads into the town. Inside they could hear many cheers, so Tanaka handed the basket to Hoshi as she picked up Hana and ran into town, Hoshi following closely behind. She stopped at the crowd of people, and many quieted when they saw her. Hoshi stood behind her, studying the people in the circle as they all quieted and parted, each getting down on one knee and bowing their heads-even the children. Hana looked around curiously from her perch on her mother's hip, her golden eyes glittering with happiness at her mother being respected. Hoshi stood tall, and her face showed no signs of trust. Tanaka faced the visitors, and what she saw filled her with wonder. She saw a monk no over the age of twenty-one, and next to him stood a demon slayer who looked about her immortality age of 19, and a female slayer no less. In the slayers arms was a small neko-tama, and next to the slayer stood a priestess dressed in odd clothing-Tanaka could feel the spiritual power pulsating around this girl. She was dressed a bit skimpily-a piece of red velvet cloth wrapped around her upper body and was held up by only two straps of the same red cloth, and on the front it had a skull with two odd looking eating utensils under it and under it said `Cereal Killer' (AN: I know they don't have spoons in Japan, but my friend had a sweater like this and I love it! And that article of clothing is a tank top, people…), her hair was clipped back by two red metal rods (hairclips), her legs were covered by a stretchy looking black material that flowed out a bit at the bottom a bit (Black Belle bottoms) and her shoes were very odd-they had red rubber bottoms and a strange looking black material on top with a rubber stripe across each side and some black strings with red dots on it going through holes and disappearing inside of the shoes (Vans with laces). Very strange indeed. On her neck was a small golden star and crescent moon that you could barely see since it matched her skin tone so much. `She's mated to a demon-a hanyou, no less then that…interesting…' Tanaka thought. In the priestess's arms was a small red-headed kitsune youkai boy who looked not much older then seven. But the one member that surprised her most was the hanyou who stood protectively next to the priestess and the kit. He looked exactly like Inutaisho, and he held a sword that looked like the Tetsusaiga. He couldn't have been over 20 years old. He looked just like her brother.
“Inuyasha…” Tanaka whispered so softly, so gently that only her daughters and the hanyou heard her.
“How do you know my name?” The hanyou asked. Tanaka looked at him, and then she noticed his red haori. It was the same haori that Inutaisho had decided to give to her brother when he was born! But this couldn't be her brother-he, her mother and her sister had been killed in a fire the night that the two hanyou's were born, and Inutaisho was found dead the next morning about a mile away from the burning mansion in a tree by his advisor Myouga.
“Mama, you need to let Uncle Inuyasha go. They died when they were born, `member?” Kohana said softly to her mother, her small clawed hand reaching up to push back some of her light, feathery, wispy silver hair back. “Daddy has, and he was his older brother.”
“I know Hana, hush now. Hoshi, take your sister and go back to the hut, understand?” Tanaka said to her elder daughter, who nodded. Tanaka put down Kohana, who took Hoshi's hand before the two walked off, Kohana looking back curiously every five seconds. Tanaka took a deep breath, and ran her hand through her hair before she turned to the crowd. “Everyone, disperse! Go back to your duties, the spring festival is in three days, and I want Akasagi to look good.” The crowd quickly separated, each person going back to do their own individual job. Tanaka looked around for her best friend, a woman not a day over the age of 25 and mother of three, married to the village blacksmith.
“Kitorini?” Tanaka called for her best friend, and out of the crowd came a woman carrying a sleeping toddler in her arms. She had short midnight black hair and warm dark brown eyes, while the boy she was carrying had brown hair and under his sleeping lids were a light brown color. “Rini, there you are!”
“Sorry Tanaka, Aki is working, and Akina and Mai were frightened by the attack, and I was in my house with little screaming Renjiro when the attack started.” Kitorini answered apologetically.
“Are Aki, Akina, Mai, you and Renjiro alright?”
“We are fine.”
“How about the other villagers? Any we need to bury?”
“No, not this time. They saved us.” With that, Kitorini nodded towards the small, weird looking travelers. Tanaka smiled down at Renjiro, and then smiled up at her best friend.
“Thank you Rini. I'll talk to you later, I hope? Or at least sometime before the festival.” Kitorini nodded, smiled at her, thanked the travelers then walked back to her hut. Tanaka then turned to the travelers. “What business do you come to offer here?”
“My lady, all we ask for is a place to stay for a few nights. We are travelers who are after the Shikon no Tama, and we have heard stories of perhaps a quarter of the jewel are up here in this part.” Said the monk to Tanaka, and she smiled softly as she pulled up her bow and slid down a small part at the bottom to reveal almost a quarter of the jewel. She pulled it out, and smiled at them.
“This, you mean?” She said, and she opened her hand to them. The monk nodded, all of the travelers were a bit astounded.
“Yes. If I may ask, why do you have it? You are only human, it wouldn't assist you in any way.” The slayer asked politely. Tanaka shook her head as she placed the piece of the jewel back in her bow.
“It's not a problem really…um, I used to guard the Shikon no Tama when I was much younger. I began my guardianship of it when I was 25 years old, until I decided that I should give it to my little second cousin Kikyou. She lived in the neighboring village, but she died about a year after receiving it. I was told she had been surprisingly attacked by a demon and was unable to protect herself, so she had ended up dying. From what I heard, she took the Shikon no Tama with her, until it somehow showed up about three years ago. No one in this village knows why, but everyone knows that this town is the most direct route that leads up to the continent where curiously many demons have been gathering for the past three years, since the Shikon no Tama came back. Usually they all carry a Shikon shard, so, I take them from them. Pretty easy. When my elder daughter Hoshi is married and priestess of Akasagi, I'll leave to get the rest of the jewel and I'll wish it away or something like that…perhaps I'll wish my mother, brother, sister and father alive again...” Tanaka's eyes glazed over as she told her story, as her mind quickly drifted back to that one night. The night that her world was torn apart, up until she gave birth to Hoshi, starting her own little family.
“You used to be a guardian of the Shikon no Tama?” The strangely dressed priestess said, impressed. “But that was over 54 years ago that you would have guarded it, and you only look like you're a little over my age!” Tanaka giggled lightly.
“I am like you in many ways priestess…I see you also collect the jewel shards from the quarter of the jewel around your neck. We both have strong spiritual powers. We both are mated to demons. I was betrothed to a demon when I was about eight years old, he was about 250. Big age gap, very big age gap, but we love each other non-the-less. We mated when I was 15, so my immortality became a reality. I now will live with him for pretty much ever.” Tanaka explained, as she began walking off. She smiled at the priestess behind her, and then looked at the rest of the group. “Come with me back to my hut. You will stay for a week's time, no longer. You can use my hut, I don't mind. It is big enough to fit us all.” With that, the group followed her to her hut. They entered a medium sized hut that had a fire in the middle, some hay in the corner and a few folded blankets in another corner where there were some jars filled with some magical artifacts and herbs, and there were also some weapons there as well. In front of the fire sat Hoshiko, stirring the fish broth that she was making in a pot over the lit fire. Next to her sat Kohana and another village girl called Hitomi. The two girls were talking and giggling about this mornings fights between the children of the village, for fun and to show off, of course. (AN: No children were harmed that morning.). But when Tanaka entered, their chatter quickly stopped. Hitomi stood and ran over to Tanaka, her green kimono swaying gently around her as she did. Her short, choppy black hair brushed in front of her dark blue eyes as she looked up at Tanaka.
“Priestess Tanaka, my mother Kaori is sick, she keeps throwing up and she looks a bit pale…would you mind taking a look at her to see what the matter is?” Hitomi asked politely, as she brushed some of her hair out of her eyes. Tanaka smiled at the young girl as she nodded.
“Of coarse Hitomi. I will be at your hut in a few moments, alright? Just let me make our guests feel at home first. Would you mind waiting for me?” Hitomi shook her head, smiling.
“Okay Priestess Tanaka! Arigatou!” The small six year old girl said before she bowed giggly and stood up, skipping back over to Kohana.
“Well, my daughters and I will sleep anywhere…um, so, go ahead and get set up while Hana and I go to check up on Hitomi's mother.” Tanaka said as she picked up Kohana and took Hitomi's hand before the three left the hut.
20 minutes later, the fish broth was done, and the hut smelled delicious as Hoshi set up eight bowls of broth filled with not only the broth but some vegetables and fish, and she made a smaller bowl filled with just the liquid and a plate with some fish on it for Kirara. Everyone was about to eat when…
“Hitomi's mommy is gonna have a baby!” Kohana squealed as she ran into the hut. She stopped, sniffed the air, and then looked down. “Ooh! Fish broth-yummy!” She sat herself down next to the empty space for her mother and Hoshi before picking up a spoonful of the broth and putting it in her mouth. She giggled delightedly as her mother walked in, a smile on her face as she sat in between Inuyasha and Kohana.
“Hitomi's mother is pregnant?” Hoshi asked her mother.
“Mhm…she's about three months along, so the baby should be due about six months from now. Your step father will be able to tell whether it's a girl or boy and whether or not it's healthy.” Hoshiko nodded.
“Understood.”
“Now, let's eat!” The large group began to eat, no more questions asked. Kohana would giggle every time her sister would make funny faces at her or pretend to choke and die while she ate her own food, only to receive a `Stop that' look from Tanaka, in which Hoshi would smile and continue eating, making Kohana giggle even more. The first to finish was Tanaka, even though she was constantly telling her daughters to hush and the last to begin eating. She stood up, and pushed her half empty bowl over to Kohana. She walked over to the pots and claw bowls and such and took a quiver with twelve arrows and threw it over it her shoulder. She then grabbed her bow that Inutaisho had given to her. “I must leave for now to go search the perimeter, but I'll be back in about half and hour.” She then left. Kohana ate the rest of her mother's broth while Hoshi stared at the doorway quietly with a sad look on her face. She sighed and a minute later began to poke at her broth. By now the kitsune was asleep in a pile of hay, along with the neko tama. The monk stood up as well, stretching his arms, before walking over to the corner on the left of the doorway and setting up his sleeping stuff there. The youkai taija quickly followed him, only she went on the right of the doorway and set up there. Within ten minutes, Sango and Miroku were asleep. Kagome sat in Inuyasha's arms, her head gently resting on his chest as they whispered things to each other. Kohana and Hoshiko had been talking a few minutes ago about the upcoming festival, until Kohana had fallen asleep, and Hoshiko then followed suite. About ten minutes after Kagome fell asleep, Inuyasha smelt a very curious scent that he would rather not have here, mixed with the heavy scent of blood mixed with Tanaka's scent of sakura and some of that vanilla stuff that Kagome wears in her hair all the time.
`Strange that I just noticed it now, but…she smells a bit like my mother…sakura and chestnut…except she has vanilla…' Inuyasha thought soundly, unfazed by the other scent with her. Until it hit him full blast, and he growled loudly. Everyone in the hut woke up from his growling, and terror crept up on Hoshiko and Kohana's faces as they smelt the stinging scent of their mother's blood. Kohana clutched onto her sisters arm, while Hoshiko tried to hush her sister. Suddenly, the door opened, and in walked one of Japan's most powerful demons carrying Tanaka.
“Mommy!” The two girls screamed, seeing their mother held by the youkai while she was stained with blood. Inuyasha jumped up as the others readied themselves.
“Sesshomaru!” The older youkai smirked down at the two crying girls, his amber eyes watching them. He gently laid Tanaka down in front of the girls, before standing up again when Inuyasha punched him in the mouth. He was pushed backwards, and Inuyasha was ready to strike again when Kohana stood up and jumped into Sesshomaru's arms.
“NO! Leave my daddy alone!” The young girl cried as Sesshomaru picked her up.
“Da-Daddy?!?”
AN: Okay people, thanks for the reviews! I know it was a bit of an awkward opening and this chapter focuses a bit more on the girl's lives and such. Inuyasha still doesn't know that Tanaka is his half sister, so, yeah. I'm sorry if you don't like the fact that I made Tanaka and Sesshomaru mated, but, I don't care…um, yeah. And for those of you who are like `They are both a sibling of Inuyasha and they are brother and sister, and husband and wife? Sick!' Um, yeah, actually, they are each a half sibling of Inuyasha, but, Tanaka shares the same mother as Inuyasha, and has a different father. Sesshomaru has the same father, but a different mother. If it were otherwise, then Id be really ickish, as the people at my school would say. Whatever. Lol. R&R!
