Chapter 4
Inu-Yasha floated through the hallways, paying no heeds to doorways, walls, etc…he just had to think.
Why does Kagome look so much like Kikyo? he wondered for what felt like the thousandth time that month. He knew Kagome had found the picture of Kikyo and noticed the resemblance, but she hadn't really returned to it since. All the unpacking had kept her occupied and he wasn't even sure she remembered it.
“Feh! Why do I even care?” he muttered aloud, passing through a wall. “Kikyo died five hundred years ago, and made sure I died too. But why didn't she become a ghost too?” He growled, and desperately wished he could punch a wall.
However, he had to settle for flinging a nearby picture off the wall, watching it smash against the opposite wall. Still not satisfied, he began making the lights explode.
Inu-Yasha!” Kagome's shriek caused him to whirl.
“What?” he asked, making the one next to her head pop.
“Why are you wrecking my family's house?” she demanded, stopping in front of him. “Listen, dog-boy, you may have lived here for five centuries, but we're here now. So just stop with the whole `wrecking-the-house' routine, okay?”
“Feh.” He rolled his eyes at her and made another light explode.
“Inu-Yasha!” She glared at him, and he suddenly realized what a mistake it was to tick her off. He backed away; solid or not, he didn't want to stay much longer.
“Uh…I have to go now.” He darted through the wall next to him. Whew…
“Don't think I won't find you, Inu-Yasha!” he heard her shout, and flinched. Quickly, he zipped off through the house.

“What?” Kagome's eyes widened. “There are people actually living on the land we bought? Where?”
“Oh, they're here and there.” Her mother bustled around the front hall, preparing it for the guests they would be entertaining later that afternoon.
“But how does that work? We own the land, but they're living on it?” Kagome was, needless to say, confused beyond all reason.
“It's not like we need the land, and they've apparently lived there for generations. I see no reason to kick them off, Kagome.”
“I didn't say that!”
“Hm.” Her mother reached up and dusted the last painting. “Well, Kagome, they'll be here soon. Why don't you go change into something more appropriate?”
“What's wrong with my outfit now?” She glanced down at her T-shirt and jeans.
“Yeah, what?” Shippo appeared on her shoulder. “I think she looks fine.”
“Oh, didn't I say?” Komiko turned around. “It's not just the people on our land I'm inviting; there are also going to be nobles.”
“Nobles?” Kagome's jaw dropped. “Like who, exactly?”
“Descendants of the friends of the family who used to live here.” She giggled to herself. “That's a mouthful.”
“Mom, what makes you think we're qualified to entertain nobles?” Kagome saw Inu-Yasha come up behind Komiko and set one of the vases on the ground.
She looked shocked. “Why, Kagome, didn't you know?”
Kagome was immediately suspicious. “Know what?”
“The people who used to live here are our ancestors. Your father decided to buy back his old family estate.” She sighed as Kagome, Shippo, and Inu-Yasha all gaped at her. “Yes, the name has changed, but that's only because some years ago—”
“Honey, tell her the rest of the story later.” Hiroshi appeared out of a side door, wearing a tuxedo. Kagome buried her face in her hands as he walked over. “I bet you didn't know that makes you Lady Kagome Higurashi, did you?”
“Dad, isn't this a bit much? Please tell me it's just some story Mom cooked up.”
He shook his head. “Afraid not, Kagome. My family lived here a long time ago, but sold the place when—well, like I said, you can hear the story later. Point is, they used to live here, I found out, I bought the place, I invited nobles over. Nevertheless, your mother's right; you need to look a little better for when they arrive. I set out a dress for you and a tuxedo for Shippo. Run along.”
“But, Dad—”
“Just go.” He waved his hand, and the girl set off with a sigh.
When she was some distance down the hall that led to her room, Inu-Yasha came up beside her.
“Well, that explains it,” he said.
“Explains what?” Why does everybody keep making me ask what?
“Your resemblance to Kikyo.” Let's see if she recalls…
“Oh, right. The girl in the picture. Yeah, I suppose she's like a many-times-great-aunt or something.”
“One problem with that theory.”
“What?” Again with the what!
“Kikyo didn't have any siblings. She was an only child, as far as I knew.”
“You knew Kikyo?”
“I said I've been here five hundred years, didn't I?” He looked cross.
“Oh.” They reached her room. “Hey, can you watch Shippo for a moment?”
“So you don't want him in there while you're changing, but you'll be in there while he is? Something tells me that's a little off.” He smirked.
“Like your head.”
“I'm not headless, wench.”
“You know what I meant.”
“Doesn't mean I have to acknowledge it.”
Rolling her eyes, Kagome disappeared into her room. Shippo sat outside the door to wait, Inu-Yasha floating next to him.

Kagome stripped down to her underthings and pulled the dress off the bed, sighing when she saw it was white. I hate white…it reveals too much.
So, she set it back down on the bed and disappeared into her closet.
She started rifling through her few good dresses, saying “nah” to each. Sighing, she walked back out and donned her normal clothes again.
“Oy, wench!” Inu-Yasha's voice came through her door. “You about done in there?”
“Send Shippo in!” She walked to the door and opened it.
“Hey, wench, I thought your father told you to wear the dress he set out for you. Or have dresses changed since I last saw one?”
She glared at him. “No, I just didn't like it.” Checking to make sure Shippo was inside, she shut the door behind her so that it was just her and the ghost.
He rolled his eyes. “Wenches. You can never decide.”
“I don't like white! It…shows things!” She reddened the instant the words were out of her mouth. “Uh…”
He grinned, arrogant guy that he was. “So you're going like that?”
“No!”
“Then what are you going to wear, Kagome?” His face was inches from hers, the smirk still on his face.
She looked daggers at him. “I'll figure it out, dog-boy.”
He shook his head. “Try the other closet, the one you aren't using.”
“What other closet? Where?”
Inu-Yasha sighed. “Listen, wench, there's another door across the room from your bed. It's hidden, but I would've thought you'd find it by now. Pull the third torch holder from the window and it should open. Kikyo had a few things stashed in there.”
“I'm in Kikyo's old room?” She looked perplexed. “Shippo, are you decent?”
“Yeah!”
“Then I'm coming in.” She opened the door and walked in, Inu-Yasha trailing. She slammed the door, almost disappointed he couldn't be hit with it. However, he just passed through it. She narrowed her eyes.
“Relax, wench, I'm not peeping, I'm just going to make sure you have things under control. I'm also going to take Shippo, so calm down.”
Kagome rolled her eyes before heading over and pulling the third torch holder from the window. Instantly, the wall flipped open.
“Whoa.” She looked inside, her eyes widening as she saw the numerous dresses. “I thought you said a few!”
“For Kikyo, that is a few.” Inu-Yasha ushered Shippo out the door. “Just don't take all day, wench. Your mother said soon.”
“Okay.” Kagome disappeared into the closet.

Inu-Yasha and Shippo weren't there when she stepped out, so she decided to head for the front hall.
Despite the assortment of dresses and the temptation to try them all on, Kagome had picked one within ten minutes, took another ten minutes to do her hair, and a final ten minutes finding a pair of shoes and accessories.
She rather liked the dress; it was a black velvet bodice with a dark blue satin skirt that didn't flare out too much. The sleeves were the same blue satin and reached to just past her elbows, but Kagome had also found a pair of black silk gloves that reached up far enough to let a little bit of skin show. She had matched it with a pair of her own black high heels. Finally, she had opted to leave her hair loose, but combed it out until it shone and was as soft as her gloves.
I wonder what these people are like, she thought as she made her way to the front hall. She could hear people talking; it sounded like her mother and two strangers.
She rounded the corner, and all speech stopped.
“Kagome…” Her mother, wearing an emerald dress, her hair up in a bun, stared. “Where did you get that?”
“I found it in my room, Mom.” She looked at the two decently-dressed people standing there, also staring: a woman and a man that must've been her husband, telling from the placement of his hand—
There was a loud smack, and Kagome had to rethink her first opinion.
“Oh, yes!” Her mother smiled brightly. “Kagome, these are some of the people who live on our land. This is Miroku Kishimoto and his fiancée, Sango.”
Miroku was in front of Kagome a split second later, his hand grasped in hers. “So lovely to meet you, Lady Kagome! If it would not bother you, might I ask if you would do me the honor of bearing—”
Sango came up and whacked him on the head before the sentence could be finished. Kagome liked her instantly.
“What was he going to ask?”
“You don't want to know.” Sango dragged her protesting fiancé away by the ear.
Kagome was grinning at the sight when she felt a familiar presence beside her. “Hey, Inu-Yasha,” she whispered. “Hi, Shippo!” She made a scene out of picking him up.
“You look pretty, Kagome,” Shippo said.
“Thank you.” He hopped out of her arms.
“Kagome, you've got fur on your dress now,” Inu-Yasha pointed out, smirking.
She hastily brushed herself off. “Oh.”
“You also look exactly like Kikyo, save for that your hair is down.”
She cast him a cold look. “Thanks.”
“Not that you don't look great!” He held up his hands.
