Chapter one:
`Ah shit, it's already 1:00 A.M.! I am SO dead!'
Other than the fact that Kagome would be whipped tonight if caught, she was overly ecstatic.
The concert she had been to would have been described as perfect in every way possible. The lights were just right; all her friends had been smiling and laughing, and she had a great time. She loved to go out and party, despite her good girl attitude at school. This was what she lived for, being free! But Kagome new that since she was getting home so late, her privileges would be taken away. This would probably be her last road trip for a while.
This unfortunate event was the cause to her reckless driving at 75mph in a 45 zone. If she were caught, she'd quite possibly never see daylight again.
Kagome had considered herself as being very lucky and happy with the world. She had two very nice, and hopefully understanding, parents, a rotten and loving little brother, and an obese cat. She also had a couple of aunts, uncles, and cousins who lived very far away, that she had never really gotten to know.
Tonight the moon was almost full, Kagome noticed. Usually the sight of this huge, yellow orb gave her the creeps. But on this particular tonight, she couldn't care less. Kagome was more focused on saving her own ass. If she could manage that, then all would be well in little Kagome world.
Once she pulled onto her street and managed to park her car sideways, leaving her doors unlocked, Kagome bolted up the steps of her shrine.
When she had made it past the Goshinboku, she started fumbling with her purse trying to find her house key. Once found, Kagome slid the key in soundlessly and crept inside.
She looked around frantically, noticing the kitchen light had been turned off and the quiet spell that could only signify sleep. `Well, looks like no one's awake…' Kagome thought as she looked around and smiled, pumping her fists in the air. `Yes! Yes! Yes! Score one for Kagome!'
Kagome started strutting towards the stairs, and decided that in the morning she would make herself a nice big bowl of Ramen. After all, it wasn't often that she got away with such a triumph. She deserved it.
She walked around the corner to the stairway, still congratulating herself, when she heard a faint cough above her. She looked up; heart pounding already, and found two angry parents looking at her as if she had killed the emperor. Of course, none other than her mom and dad would be standing there, she wasn't that lucky at all. They motioned for her to come in her room, surely to discuss punishment.
`Damn. No Ramen.'
Kagome woke up early, and went down to get some breakfast. After that talk with her parents last night, it was no wonder why she had such a bad headache. She was positive that if not for her younger brother sleeping directly across the hall, she would be completely def and partially disabled.
`It was like they thought I wouldn't have been able to hear them, in the dead of night, while in an enclosed room! I mean I can understand that I got 2 weeks grounding, but please. I can hear just fine.'
Kagome thought about it and decided that she would just have to let it go, `It's probably just because they care'.
She finished her waffles, and juice, and headed toward the living room where her dad always sat in his favorite chair to watch the morning news. As she turned the corner, however, she found no one.
Kagome looked back in the kitchen to make sure that she didn't miss anyone, and then something caught her eye, a pink sticky note on the fridge. She walked lazily over and read it out loud,
“Went to the store to get groceries, be back in an hour or two.
-Mom and Dad.”
`Well, now I know where mom and dad went, but where is Souta?' Kagome had a pretty good idea, so she walked upstairs and peeked in her little brothers room;`Yep, just as I though. He's still sleeping'
Kagome walked back down stairs in her big shirt that belonged to her dad, and her little black shorts. She tiredly wondered what she should do today.
Kagome was then brought out of her thoughts when the doorbell rang. `Who in the hell could that be? It's Saturday…'
She opened the door to find two tall police men looking down at her. This was quite unusual, and Kagome didn't know what to do. She was hit with waves of worry as she stood there quietly. Finally managing to find her words, she leaned against the doorframe, trying to look cool. “Hello, how may I help you?”
The men looked at her sadly, then to each other. The man on the right looked back at her. “Are you Kagome Higurashi?”
“Um, yes officer,” She replied with an unsteady voice. “Is there something wrong?”
“I believe we have some bad news,” The other man answered. There was an eerie silence, until the other police man added a question. “Would you happen to have any relatives that could possibly stay with you for a couple of years?”
Kagome was confused, `What kind of question was that?'
“I have plenty relatives living somewhere in the USA, officer. Why do you ask?” Kagome questioned. This worried her, she was obviously very frightened. God, where we her parents? She wasn't sure if she should be answering such personal questions when they weren't present.
The two police men glanced at each other again, and then one grimly looked to the ground. “Your parents, Ms.Higurashi, were involved in a car accident early this morning. It saddens us to report that they, uh, didn't… make it.” He looked up into her shocked expression. “We are very, very sorry. My partner and I, we knew them personally.”
The only reply that the two Police received was a `Thud' as Kagome fainted, and hit the floor.
