Part 10
Inu Yasha sat Indian style in the middle of his bedroom floor looking around his new room with a critic's eye. He had to admit, the new room was rather nice. The white floor and ceiling boards brought out the fresh, vibrant color of red that the walls were coated in, the red and white old fashion Japanese oil lamps hanging from the ceiling above cedar wooden flooring.
The furniture was much to the same extent in color and material as the room. With matching cedar dressers, night stand, coffee table, chairs and a four-poster bed covered in white sheets, red comforter and matching pillows.
He had spent the entire weekend working on finishing it before Monday came around. Ignoring the weird looks that were sent his way from the others when he requested that every thing be red, white and made of cedar. He didn't care what they thought; he had his own reasons for doing the things he did. Besides, it he shouldn't have to explain things that didn't concern them.
Inu Yasha growled at that thought. Things that didn't concern them… that was the reason why the three of them were mad at him in the first place; especially Kagome. He refused to explain to them the reason for lying to them. Not that it was any of their business in the first place; he only did it to help protect them. They have no reason getting involved in something that could end up getting them hurt or worse…
Killed.
There were so many times that he just wanted to go to them all and spill it all out. To tell them everything; what happened to his brother and clan, why he was exiled, who it was that he hunted now for revenge. But in revealing his past, he would reveal something that he would never do willingly.
His fear.
It was true. For the first time in his life, Inu Yasha was scared. His fear in never being able to live up to his family's name, his fear in facing his brother's death, his fear in being alone.
Kagome came to mind at the thought of being alone, causing Inu Yasha to sigh heavily. There was no denying his attraction to the girl; it was just something that couldn't be ignored no matter how hard you would try. He knew there was no hope for him to be with her, she was a slayer after all. She would rather die a thousand deaths than to even breathe the same as air him, that she made perfectly clear on Friday.
He laughed lightly, touching his bottom lip with his thumb. She was a tough little thing with nerves of steel, he would admit that much. He could see why she was chosen to fight. A feisty temper like hers would go a long way in a battle, with the result of her coming out as the victor no less.
'Yes…' Inu Yasha thought to himself, licking his lips. 'She would be miraculous in battle. Like a wild animal caught in its prime.'
A knock at his door brought him out of his fantasy. "Inu Yasha?"
"Come in."
The door open slowly, Miroku popping his head in to the room. "We're ready test out the rosary's powers when ever you are."
Inu Yasha stood quickly. He walked calmly over to the monk, opening the door all the way to exit the room.
"I'm ready."
They walked back to the living room side by side, Inu Yasha walking over to sit in on of the armchairs as Miroku went to sit beside Sango on the futon. The coffee table was covered in shade samples of eye and hair colors and pictures of various people of all sizes and skin tones. All Inu Yasha had to do was pick what combination he liked best and use the rosary's magic to change his appearance.
Simple, right? Wrong.
Three hours after looking over every different kind of combinations, Inu Yasha still wasn't any closer to choosing as he was when he started. It was infuriating, for all three of them.
"Nothing?" Miroku asked tiredly. "You don't like anything here?"
"If I did, I would have picked it." Inu Yasha growled.
"This is hopeless." Sango said, sighing heavily as she rested her head in her hands. "We're never going to get any where if we keep this up."
"Hey guys." Three pairs of eyes moved to the doorway, where dirty looking Kagome stood with a small bouqet of lavender coloured lilacs. "What are you doing?"
"Just trying to come up with a combination of appearances for Inu Yasha." Miroku sighed. "But unfortunately, we haven't even pick an eye color, hair color or a body structure."
Inu Yasha couldn't help but stare straight a head. There was something entrancing about Kagome with her hair down, how it fell in soft black waves down her back and shoulders. And her skin radiated with the gentle, soothing scent of lavender. The fragrance falling over him in a mist of bliss, causing his eyes to close slowly as he deeply inhaled.
He could see her perfectly behind his closed eyelids. Sitting in a meadow of purple flowers, her hair flying in the soft summer breeze as little lilacs swirled around her as they fell from the tree behind her. Their sweet fragrance mixing with that of her own natural scent, creating something surreal and unexplainable.
Inu Yasha's eyes suddenly flew open, the gasp startling him slightly and shattering his day dream. Turning his gaze, he gave Miroku the best glare he could muster up causing the other man to visibly swallow.
"Is there a problem, monk?"
"Well… n-no…" Miroku swallowed, trying hard not to allow his fear enter his voice. There was just something about the way Inu Yasha glared at him like that; it felt almost like he was on trial or something.
"Oh, give him a break." Sango scolded. "He was just a little shocked when your appearance suddenly changed is all. I think we all were."
Inu Yasha arched an eyebrow, the look of pure disbelief written all over his face. There was no way that his appearance would have changed without him knowing it, or feeling it for that matter. What did she take him for? A new born pup?
"What? Don't believe me? Then take a look for yourself."
Sango tossed a small hand mirror to the disbelieving demon, ushering him to take a look as he caught it in mid-air.
Still believing that he would see nothing different, Inu Yasha gazed into the mirror's reflection. His eyes widening as the image staring back at him was not what he thought it would be. Long black hair stood out where white once was, and what was once golden was now a soft amethyst color. His teeth were straight with no presence of ever having long, usual canines, and his ears now setting on each side of his face. His once fuzzy, white triangles on top of his head gone from sight. Even his claws were gone.
'Is this really me?' Inu Yasha questioned silently to himself. He touch his ears and small canines, ran his fingers through his hair, looking for something, anything that showed any signs of his old self. But there was nothing.
"Well, Inu Yasha, I must say that you defiantly look human." Miroku nodded at his own words, studying the other mans new features from a distance. "Though I am a little curious of how you came up with such a unique combination. I don't even remember coming across any eye samples of amethyst."
Inu Yasha slowly set down the mirror. "Neither do I."
"Does it really matter?" Sango asked. "The fact of the matter is, is that now you've picked something we can get on with something more important. Like finishing up your transfer papers and school records for in the morning."
"An excellent idea, Sango my love. As always."
"Don't even think about it."
"What? I didn't even say anything."
"You didn't have to! I know that look and I'm telling you right now… Don't even think about it!"
Miroku sighed, it was almost impossible to get away with anything now a day. But then again, he always did like a challenge. "Kagome," he said out loud, trying to divert some of the attention from himself. "What do you think of Inu Yasha's new look?"
"It doesn't matter what appearance he takes," Kagome replied coldly, her eyes meeting Inu Yasha's now amethyst gaze. Her deep blue depths just as icy as her words. "He'll always be a murderous demon to me."
Inu Yasha could feel his anger begin to boil as she turned her back on them and walked away. Without even stopping to think his actions through, he was up and off the couch, following after her retreating figure.
He was going to teach this bitch some discipline and some manners on who she talks to.
"Inu Yasha!"
Miroku stood to chase after the demon, his mind set on stopping the possibility of any kind of blood shed that was sure to surge between the two. But before he even got two feet from where he was sitting, Miroku found himself flat on his back with Sango straddling his hips.
"Sango?"
"Don't." She said sternly, the tone in her voice leaving no room for argument. "Leave them be. They need to find some common ground between each other."
"But Sango, they could kill each other!"
"I said leave them be." She repeated with more force. "Besides, I changed my mind."
Miroku froze, a small smile spreading across his face as his hands slid up his lovers sides. "Is that so?"

Kagome stretched her arms above her head, giving her muscles a chance to loosen up for her daily exercises. She had decided to work more on her offensive attacks today, as she was tired and bored of going over her defensive moves over and over again. Besides, it wasn't like she ever really got to practice her offence as much as she liked to and now was a good time as any to do so. With Miroku busy with Sango, she was free to train and practice what she wanted.
She was caught off guard by the pair of hands that grabbed her from behind and swung her around. It would have been all to easy for her to defend herself if the wind wasn't knocked out of her as her back was shoved non too gently against the nearest wall. The back of her head connecting with the hard surface, making her dizzy and light headed.
"Bitch!"
Kagome growled the best she could as she recognised Inu Yasha's voice. Her pain forgotten as anger and rage clouded her mind. She raised her hands as far as she could, her palms coming into contact with the sides of his chest, and pushed against him as hard as her current position would allow her.
It didn't do much good, her actions only rewarding her with his body being pressed more up against her own. Pinning her between him and the wall, with no way to move.
"Let go of me!"
Inu Yasha shook her slightly to get her attention and to make her stop struggling. "Quiet wench and listen!"
Her eyes came up to meet his, her gaze colliding with angry, intense eyes that seemed to flash between amethyst, gold and red. The shift and sudden change of colors showing her how hard he was trying to hold onto his control.
"I don't know what the hell it was that you think I did to wrong you, but this ends here and now. I said be quiet and listen!" He hissed angrily, his harsh tone resulting in her shutting her mouth and keeping whatever it was she was about to say to herself. "I am not going to put up with your attitude anymore. I am not going to put up with your childish actions anymore. I could care less if you like me but you will respect me. Understand? We are now partners, whether either one of us likes it or not. So get over whatever it is that you think you have against me… cause I'm here to stay."
He paused and waited for her to reply, but got nothing but silence from her. It unnerved him how quiet she was being now. Any other time, she would have chewed his ear off with what she thought of him. But now…
Now she was quiet… a little too quiet for his liking. What was going on inside of that mind of hers that was making her so silent, and that seemed to make her eyes soften and swell up with… tears? Was she about to cry?
Inu Yasha felt his heart twist. If it there was only one thing he could not stand in the world, it was to see a woman cry. And just as his eyes had confirmed a single tear drop fell from each of her eyes, leaving thin, wet lines in their wake as they fell down her cheeks and off her chin to land somewhere below.
"Kagome…" He bowed his head is disgrace, unwilling to met her eyes knowing that she would she the guilt in them. All he wanted to do was to get her to respect him, to treat him like a regular, ordinary person and not some demon as she continuously classifies him as.
"Takemaru."
Inu Yasha's body stiffen at the sound of that name. Slowly he lift his head, his eyes locking with Kagome's once again. He could see the hatred, pain and misery that swam in their depths, her lashes still wet from previously fallen tears.
Taking a deep breath Inu Yasha force himself to speak. "Where did you hear that name?"
Silence.
"Where?" Still no answer. "Damn it Kagome…"
"I was there…" She answered quickly, her voice steady and calm. "I was there that night. Hiding in the closet… trying not to cry or gag from the smell of blood…"
"The closet?" Inu Yasha searched her eyes for a moment, trying hard to piece things together the best he could.
He knew what she was talking about; the smell, the blood, the bodies. After all, he was there that night. Though, only a pup at the time, he could still remember the bulk of what had happen. But what did she mean 'she was in the closet'? After all, the only person that was found hiding in the closet was…
Inu Yasha's eyes widen. "Kagome…"
He pushed himself away from her, putting distance between them. She remained where she was, her eyes still glaring at him with all the hate that she possessed. It didn't confuse him anymore, that look of hers that she had always sent his way. Actually, it made sense now. But it still didn't erase all that she had went through, all the pain and suffering that she would, for the rest of her life no doubt, feel for the events of that horrible night.
"I'm sorry…" Was all Inu Yasha could say. Though completely useless as it was, it was really the only thing that could be said.
"Save it." Kagome hissed back. "Your family ruined my life, took everything that I ever loved and held dear away from me. Nothing you can say will ever bring back what your father has taken away from me! And I promise you, one day, you will pay for your family's actions. I promise you that."
Inu Yasha remained where he was as she turned and ran back up the stairs. The scent of fresh salt reaching his nose, causing him to close his eyes as his heart gave a little twist yet again. The guilt that he felt earlier coming back to hit him ten fold.
'She thinks we Takahashi's are to blame for that night…' Sad violet eyes moved to the stairs, almost wishing for her to come back down them. 'Oh Kagome… if only you could remember everything that night… maybe then you would be able to see the truth.'
