Kagome sat in the living room clutching a flashlight. Outside the wind shrieked and pounded at the house. Souta was doing his best to act the tough sixth grader, but she could tell her little brother was scared almost to tears. They sat in darkness, the power having gone out over three hours ago and listened as the cyclone beat their island home into submission. Kagome shone the light around the room and paused a moment on her bag. She'd been preparing to return feudal Japan when her mother had called from Osaka and told her that they would remain until the storm blew itself out of existence. Inuyasha had been angry, but her first responsibility was to her family and he had backed down in the face of her determination. She sighed softly. In the three years since she had started her great journey, her feelings toward the hanyou had changed greatly. What had started as infatuation had turned to bitter regret then changed to tentative friendship. Finally it had blossomed into something more substantial. She thought of Inuyasha as an over-protective older brother, who expressed his love through gruff words and rough treatment rather than tenderness.
Suddenly she felt the house shake around them. Souta bit down on a scream. Kagome pushed herself to her feet and ran upstairs. In her room and her mother's room the windows were blown in. She closed the doors as best she could, but she could feel the storm trying to force its way into the rest of the house. She ran to her grandfather's room. Enough was enough. They were getting out of here. She found a necklace of prayer beads and ran down to the living room. She put them on Souta and touched them. He watched wide-eyed as they glowed for a moment then returned to normal.
"What was that for?"
She lifted her bag and threw it over her shoulders. "Protection, we're getting out of here. The house is about to go."
The structure groaned around them and Souta grabbed her hand. "Where are we going?"
"To the past."
Together they managed to open and close the door and make their way through winds that were strong enough to lift them off their feet and toss them like rag dolls. Kagome forced the doors to the well house closed behind them and they stood for a moment, catching their breath. She gripped his hand once more and they climbed down the steps to the Bone Eater's well.
"Are you sure about this?"
"You want to stay here?"
Souta winced then nodded. Together, they jumped into the well. They were surrounded by blue light then they landed on the hard earth. Kagome sighed and looked up. The sky was a star studded array of every nocturnal light the universe had to offer. She helped Souta climb out of the well. They were greeted by Inuyasha, who seemed both relieved and startled by their appearance.
"What the hell happened to you? You look like a drowned rat."
"It's lovely to see you too, Inuyasha."
She filled him in as they walked toward the village. Souta walked as though he was in a trance, and Kagome supposed he was in one of a sort. After all he'd never actually followed her into the well before. Everything that was as familiar to her as her future home was new and mysterious to him. Miroku and Sango were still up and glad to meet her brother. Miroku took him to find a bed and they all sat down in Kaede's house. Sango shook her head.
"It wasn't wise to bring him."
"I didn't have a choice. Tomorrow I'll take him back through, but chances are there won't be a house for him to stay in. I know I don't have a room anymore. All the clothes I have are in this bag."
Sango winced. She'd forgotten about Kagome's description of the storm damaged rooms. "Still he can get hurt."
Miroku entered and Kagome nodded her thanks to him. He sat and tried to figure out what they were talking about. "I took precautions."
"Like?"
"The prayer beads will protect him if I did the spell right."
"Protect him from what, exactly."
She frowned, trying to remember exactly what her command had been. "Protect him from those who wish him harm."
Miroku frowned. "That's a rather open ended spell."
"I know, but I was in a hurry and it was the best I could come up with. It's only one night. What could go wrong?"
