When Sesshomaru awoke he was immediately aware that he was not alone in the room. He sat up, his hand already moving toward a sword that was not there. Kaede gave him a benign smile and handed him a cup of tea. He took the brew and swallowed it. He felt oddly weak, as though he'd had the life pulled out of him. Suddenly his memories came flooding back and he bit back on a growl. He had almost had the life pulled out of him. He set the cup down and prepared to rise, but Kaede's hands on his shoulders prevented him.

"If you can't push your way past an old woman, then you are too weak to be out of bed yet."

There was no denying her logic so he lay back down without argument. "How long was I asleep?"

"The sun rose about an hour ago."

He nodded. "I take it Naraku is gone?"

"Inuyasha-san practically tore him apart with his bare hands. I honestly couldn't tell whose collapse upset him more, Kagome's or yours."

Sesshomaru would not let the surprise show on his face. "And Kagome-san?"

"Still asleep. She should be waking up later today I think. She had a harder time of it than you, and she is, after all, only human. It takes longer for us to recover."

Even as she said it, the door slid open to reveal a fully awake Kagome trying to shrug her way out of Subaru's grasp. She freed herself of the youkai and shut the door in her face. She sighed softly and came over to sit by his futon. Kaede greeted her with a fierce frown.

"You should not be out of bed."

"I'll be out of the palace next time you try to shut me up in a room with that…that woman! How does anyone put of with her?"

Sesshomaru smiled. "I have always found she is more tolerable when her son, Sanji is in the room. Kaede-sama is right, you should not be up and running about."

Kaede handed Kagome a cup of tea and nodded. "You see, I have the Lord of the Western Lands on my side, which means you are overruled."

Sesshomaru yawned mightily. "I don't think she recognizes that kind of authority. Remember she was on the wall even after I asked her not to be."

Kagome downed the tea and yawned. She looked into the empty cup. "Kaede-baba, what is this?"

"A rather powerful sleeping draught, though it seems to take longer to work on youkai than humans. You both need sleep."

Sesshomaru felt his eyes grow heavy as he growled at the woman. "Meddling human."

"Yes I am, now try to get some sleep."

When Sesshomaru awoke again he found himself wrapped around someone. Someone who smelled of jasmine and mountain springs. Someone who was stroking his tail in her sleep. Carefully, so as not to awaken her, he tried to extricate himself. Kagome's head rested on his arm while his other hand was gently caressing her thigh. He stopped himself, realizing the action was unconscious. That sort of thing tended to happen a lot around her. Still her fingers continued to fondle him and he found himself fighting hard to remain in control. Another scent reached him as well and he decided he needed to get out of this bed and out of this room before it was too late. Kagome was in her heat and she was aroused. Gently he shook her awake. Kagome rolled over and her eyes widened in shock when she saw where she was.

"What…where…Kaede."

The last word seemed to sum up the entire situation. "I was wondering if I might have my tail back."

She flushed and released him. "Sorry."

"Not at all."

He sat up his back to her. Someone had stripped him down to his loincloth, a garment that did little hide the condition he found himself in. He pushed himself to his feet and went over to a chest that held his hakama. Kagome, dressed only in the yukata she slept in, watched him from the bed. She'd been awake for almost ten minutes before he'd finally decided to join her in consciousness. She could still feel his hands as they'd danced over her stomach and thighs and the vibration of his chest at her back as he had purred softly. She rose and approached him, resting her hand on his back.

"Sesshomaru…"

The feel of her hand on his bare skin was too much. He bit down on a snarl and simply nodded to her.

"Sesshomaru-sama, you were touching me…did you know it was me, or were you dreaming of someone else?"

His shoulders tensed slightly then relaxed. "No I was not dreaming. I knew it was you."

"Oh." She stepped closer, close enough for him to feel the warmth radiating off her body. "When I touch your tail…what happens?"

Her fingers danced through tail and he turned. He gripped her arms and pressed her against him. His mouth descended on hers in a kiss that sought to consume her. His tongue delved into the recesses of her mouth as his hands cupped her hips and lifted her against him so that she could feel his erection pressing into her stomach. He broke the kiss, his eyes fiery with passion.

"This is what happens." He pressed his hips into her. "This is what you do to me."

He looked down into her wide blue eyes. There was a depth of caring there that scared him, even more so because he knew it was reflected in his own eyes. Her hands came up to cup his face and she drew him into a kiss that was both gentle and needing. Their tongues danced around each other as he lifted her and carried her to his futon. He wanted to mate this woman. He wanted her to be his and no one else's. They lay down without breaking the kiss. Kagome's head was reeling. She wanted this, more than she had ever wanted anything in her life. This was right. He released her suddenly, his eyes filled with fear. She smiled as she touched his face gently.

"You are not Inuyasha. You do not take what is not given."

"I don't even know if you are truly human."

She touched the place where the complete Shikon no tama rested. "I do not think I am human. At the same time, I am not youkai."

He bent and kissed the spot. "I…I love you."

She smiled. "I know. I felt it on the wall. It was your love that purified the jewel. That is why I am alive, because you love me."

His lips found hers once more and he pulled her closer. His ears caught the sound of someone approaching and he broke the kiss.

"Someone is coming."

Kagome sighed softly and nodded. She slipped out of the futon and rose, walking across the room to the door. Just before she opened it she paused and glance over her shoulder at him. He could drown in her eyes and the depth of emotion he found there. A smile tugged at her lips and she slid the door open, brushing past Kaede as she made her way back to her room. She entered Sesshomaru's room to find him donning his armor.

"I thought I told you Naraku was dead."

He turned to face her and she took a step back as the barely suppressed rage flashed over his face. "How dare you lay me in a bed with that…that human? You…you…get out of my sight. Now!"

She retreated, closing the door in the face of his wrath. Sesshomaru sagged slightly. He was angry with Kaede, but not for her meddling. He was furious that the woman could not have left them alone. Now though, he had work to do. Kikyou was still out there, and the woman had already tried to kill Kagome twice in his presence. He picked up Tenseiga and Tokijin and slipped them into his sash. There was a knock at his door and Inuyasha entered without waiting for permission. Sesshomaru schooled his face to confront his brother.

"You gave Kaede-sama quite a scare. She did something similar to that when Kagome and I were first getting to know each other. Mind you she never put us down in the same bed, but it forced us to reconcile our differences."

"Kagome and I have no need for such childish antics."

Inuyasha frowned at his brother's appearance. "Where are you going?"

"When I brought Kagome here I made a vow to protect her. Twice Kikyou has tried to slay her. Once if not for the Tenseiga she would have succeeded. I know you care for the woman, but you must realize this is not the same woman you fell in love with."

"You are going to hunt her."

"I will not ask you to choose between Kagome and your family and this woman, but I will ask that if you do not want me to do this, you say so."

Inuyasha was silent for a long time. How many times had Kikyou managed to extract a vow of protection from him? As he looked back on them he sighed softly. The person he had vowed to protect was the Kikyou of fifty years ago, not this hateful resentful creature that should never have existed. He'd loved her once, but the Kikyou he held in his heart had been dead for over fifty years. It was long past time he buried her.

"I'll get the others."

"I think you should stay. From what I understand she has power over you, little brother. I would hate to lose you to her."

"But you will not go alone?"

"I will not. Jaken will come, and I think your demon hunter friend is most anxious to do something other than sit around."

"Miroku-san will want to prove he is still an asset despite the loss of his wind tunnel."

"Miroku-san is welcome as well. He is adept at finding spirit shields and setting up seals I understand. That will no doubt be necessary from all I've heard of the woman."

"How long have you been planning this?"

"Since the day I brought her here. I knew it would eventually come to this." He laid an almost paternal hand on Inuyasha's shoulder. "Guard this palace well, and all the peoples within its walls. I will return as soon as I can."
