Chapter 6
Ginkotsu's forgotten past

The rain poured onto Ginkotsu very roughly and quickly which irritated him very much. Ginkotsu stood in front of a tombstone which seemed to mean something to him. He remembered the times when Mukruo the grave robber was his one and only master to be commanded by, he remembered the day that he was built but now Ginkotsu stands in front of the tombstone belonging to that same person who commanded and built him.

About thirteen years ago, there was a man who seemed to be grave robbing body parts from coffins that were six feet deep in the ground; he was an elderly man living by himself for unknown reasons. Until some men appeared ready to catch the grave robber, this person managed to get two legs, an arm and a half decayed head. “Catch that man!” one of the two men who had seen this grave robber yelled out. The two men started to chase the grave robber and as they were chasing him one of them tripped into a grave and fell right into an open coffin containing a fully decayed body. Screams filled the night sky as the grave robber had disappeared in front of the two men's eyes. Not only was grave robbing against the law but to some people it was disturbing the spirits of the dead whom were robbed of their body parts. Rumors had it that even ghosts would rise from their graves and take vengeance against the one who robbed their parts.

This rumor however didn't scare the grave robber; instead he ran off with the arm, half decayed head and legs in his possession and got into his house extremely quickly, fast enough that no one would be able to notice his speed. The man laid the parts down and took his coat off than after he put the parts onto the nearest piece of furniture that he could find and finally he ran off to another room and started laughing. “I have finally gotten all necessary pieces that could make me create an iron human.” The grave robber yelled and cheered as he smirked. He knew exactly what he was going to do next and the next thing was going to effect mankind forever and never will it be the same with meaning. It wasn't that he was evil; the only reason he had done this was to merely have a friend to help him live the rest of his life in peace and quiet with no disturbance.

The grave robber took the body parts and iron parts into another room and than took out bolts and wires which would be helpful for this creation. “Starting tonight, mankind will look to me as a hero.” He yelled out as he had started to attach everything together; the legs being covered in thick armor, an artificial chest, saws buried deep within and many other parts were brought together within one whole night. When morning came the grave robber became very angered and yelled “WHY WON'T THIS LIVE? I COMMAND YOU TO LIVE!” in fact the whole body that was put together wasn't moving or breathing at all nor was it even blinking. Out of all that should have happened; nothing had happened except that the man had just wasted his time building something that wasn't worth building. He screamed and yelled, being a fool he whacked his head against the wooden wall yelling “stupid” over and over again. That was when a miasma appeared from nowhere and swirled around the lifeless body and after doing so a voice came out of it saying “this thing you were trying to make life from is going to be alive within less than three minutes.” The miasma disappeared but the man being doubtful didn't believe what he had heard; there was no possible chance of it coming to life unless some kind of force had done it.

Night time came for the grave robber and he had said “now I, Mukruo, hadn't brought that person to life like I had planned. I may as well just give up on this and go to sleep. Now than it would be nice if he were alive and kicking; if he were than I'd ask for a nice cup of green tea.” Mukruo was the man's name in very fact. He had just about been ready to go sleep until he heard “shall I go get you a cup of green tea? GEEESH!” the sound had startled Mukruo. “Who are you?” he asked the sound. The “thing” that Mukruo had built approached him and kneeled down to him, it seemed that he was bowing. “That is what I am wondering myself; you see I don't have a name. GEEESH!” the “thing” replied. Mukruo blinked and approached his creation; it may not have been beautiful but indeed it was magnificent, how it was walking and talking and alive.

“Well let's see; what shall I name you? Well I dragged some of you parts from graves and the rest I have forged from steel to make you stronger so I must say think of a good name for you. I know since “Gin” means “steel” and “Kotsu” means bone than I shall call you “Ginkotsu” and now you shall respond to that name every time I call you by that.” The thing now known as Ginkotsu had flinched after hearing this, he had a name to live by. “GEESH what shall I do now?” Ginkotsu asked glancing at Mukruo in a rather friendly matter which comforted Mukruo very much. “Get me some fire wood.” He replied.

Time went on and Ginkotsu grew to follow whatever Mukruo commanded and at the same time he learned new words such as “yes”, “no”, “please”, “thank you” and “you're welcome”. All these he had learned from Mukruo's communicating with Ginkotsu in such a matter that was understandable for Ginkotsu. One day Mukruo commanded Ginkotsu to go and get some wood for heat and he left to do so. “Oh my; is best thing I have ever done in my fifty years worth of life or what; building myself a non human slave to help me with my work in the house. But I must never ever let anyone else get their hands on him and if they want him they'll have to go through me first!” Mukruo laughed and because of how happy he was, he started to think of building another such creature but to make it this time beautiful. Or he could make his creation even more beautiful so that he wouldn't have to grave rob again which was very disturbing last time.

Than there was knocking at the door; now who could that be? Mukruo opened the door and saw soldiers in front of him; standing there with their swords ready to attack him. “Now what is this all about?” Mukruo asked.
“This is about your `monster' that you've created. This `monster' has been running around and chopping down our forest, than started yelling `I only serve Mukruo the master of mine. We knew who to come to.” The one soldier said
“Now that is nonsense; Ginkotsu would never chop down trees. He just goes to the market and pays for wood.” Mukruo snapped back.
“Explain why the forest is becoming smaller and wood is becoming an issue.” The general soldier demanded while pointing his sword to Mukruo's neck. “Destroy that beast before our wood is all gone or wash your neck and wait.” The men got on their horses and started to ride off into the distance where they no longer could be seen. Mukruo started to feel fear all the sudden; he didn't want to destroy his friend but he didn't want to die at the same time. There was something that needed to be done about Ginkotsu; maybe he should no longer be a helper but a weapon now. As barbaric as it sounded; it seemed to be Mukruo's only choice.

That night Ginkotsu came back with a huge load of wood and as well as fish. Mukruo ran up to Ginkotsu and embraced him saying “oh Ginkotsu I don't want to lose you! Please go off on your own; you're free from my cruel slavery.” Ginkotsu than said “I shall do so.” Ginkotsu nodded and walked out the door and headed off on his own.

Ginkotsu had no idea why Mukruo had set him free; maybe he did a good job of being a slave to him so now he is free. But why; he had only been a slave worth ordering around until just now. Maybe he wasn't good enough for Mukruo and therefore allowed to do whatever he had wanted. That was when he saw a small group of children playing with each other and laughing. This brought interest in Ginkotsu's heart and he wondered what they were doing. One of the small children saw him and yelled “AHHH IT'S A HIDEOUS MONSTER COMING TO EAT US; RUN!” the children screamed and ran off as fast as they could. “Hideous” now what did that mean? Ginkotsu had no idea what the word was supposed to mean but maybe it was a good thing to be “hideous” to Ginkotsu and than he thought of different meanings inside his head which to him were very flattering to him and to others as well.

Later on Ginkotsu than saw a group of women talk with each other bringing up the words “beautiful” and “hideous”. Now this was something that Ginkotsu had to listen to. This conversation had brought up the real meaning of hideous which brought up another word “ugly”. Ginkotsu knew what ugly had meant and the whole meaning of “hideous” had broken his heart; he didn't think that he was ugly in any shape or form. He thought that he was just plain and normal. Than one woman had said “you see the creature over there? That is what you call hideous. Nothing will ever be equal to that except for ugly women. But really it would be prettier if it had more beauty.”

Of course! Beauty meant “good looking” and hideous had meant “bad looking”. Ginkotsu backed away and ran off in shame of his appearance. He than felt a new emotion; he wanted to crush those people who had put him down for his appearance and than burn them to death. This emotion was very obvious to what it felt like; it was called `hatred' and he knew the full meaning. Now than if only he had the chance to than he would kill everyone who was mean to him.

“Aw gee Jakotsu you blew it this time! You killed off every woman in sight.”
“Well it wasn't my fault Bankotsu! They were being `womanly' again.”
“Oh gee nice excuse Jakotsu.”
“Shut up Suikotsu.”
“Well guys let's think this way; would we ever get anymore allies?”
“Good point Renkotsu.”
“Bankotsu, why do you always have to agree with Renkotsu?”
“Because he's second in command you dingbat.”

Carefully Ginkotsu listened to this conversation, these people sounded not only fierce but also guys worth being friends with. He ran off to find where the voices were coming from and that was when he saw four men standing around talking. These men weren't only brave sounding but also they seemed tolerant to weird people since after all two of them did look weird; the feminine one and the one with the bandanna. The other two seemed young and energetic as well as what people would call “beautiful”. Although Ginkotsu knew now what beauty would look like on men; the one he was jealous of was the youngest and most handsome one. That one seemed to have it all, guts, good looks and strength. “GEESH I heard you guys talking.” Ginkotsu blurted out to the four men who all turned around and stared at him awkwardly. They didn't seem to be either scared or weirded out at all; instead they blankly stared at him.

“Bankotsu don't you think we should be getting going?” the feminine one asked the handsome one now known as “Bankotsu”. “Nah; I think that metal guy will be pretty useful for us when we go into battle.” Bankotsu replied with a grin on his face turned to Ginkotsu “so what are you called?” Bankotsu asked. “GEESH call me `Ginkotsu' for that is the only name I respond to.” Ginkotsu replied feeling proud that Bankotsu and his friends didn't run off in fear of Ginkotsu's appearance.

Those memories of what happened from then on stayed in Ginkotsu's memory for he had never been respected as much as he was before he met up with Bankotsu, Renkotsu, Suikotsu and Jakotsu than got more respect out of Kyokotsu and Mukotsu. Such memories have both been hurtful and comfortable for the fact that it seems that as far as Ginkotsu knew; the good does come out of the bad. And the good will never come if there wasn't any bad.
