Prologue
Rin sat crosslegged on her parents' bed next to her mother. In front of the child was a large tome that looked old and dusty. She looked at it curiously before opening it. She carefully flipped through the pages, worried they would crumble under her fingers. After a quick scan of the contents, she gave her mother a curious glance.
Kagome gently took the book from the child and flipped through the pages. She rested at a page that bore only one sentence: "I am the Lady of the Western Lands."
Rin tilted her head to the side slightly. "Is that you?" she asked.
Kagome shook her head. "This was your father's mother. She never wrote her name in here. In fact, she hardly wrote in here at all. The book contains a total of twenty pages with her handwriting," the miko whispered.
Rin nodded as she stared at the words. She almost wondered if they would suddenly jump out at her. "She sounds arrogant," Rin observed.
"She had every right to be. From the stories I have heard, she was very beautiful and seemed very delicate. But, she had a feriousity to her that proved her to be wild and dangerous. When she became the Lady, she took her job seriously and played the part to the fullest extent," Kagome explained.
Rin asked, "When did she die?"
"I do not know. All I know is, your father was young when she died. And, shortly after her death, InuTaisho had found another love."
"Uncle Inuyasha's mother? Did Lord InuTaisho love his first wife?" Rin questioned, her eyes not leaving the words.
"I believe he did. The great dog demon was not known to take on a mate carelessly," Kagome confirmed. "Besides, once you are claimed, the spell is binding. It is something that can never be broken. So, whomever claims you, you had better be sure you love them and they love you in return."
"But, most demons don't even know what love is. I thought they just claimed one another to further the bloodline and gain power?"
Kagome shrugged. "I suppose so, but that was not the case with InuTaisho. He wouldn't have taken a mate he did not love. To him, love was the greatest power of all. Through love, he sired two sons."
"Momma? If claiming someone is binding, how is it that Lord InuTaisho was able to marry again? I know he was married to Uncle Inuyasha's mother, but how?" the girl pried.
"Lady Izayoi was a human. So, they married the way humans marry. The local miko presided over the wedding," Kagome explained.
Rin nodded. "But, Daddy claimed you, didn't he?"
Kagome smiled as she answered, "Yes, he did. And we married in the shrine. We did both, because I wanted both."
"You were very pretty, Momma. I remember the wedding. Daddy was so handsome standing there. Course, he would've looked better in his regular kimono, but that was alright. I wasn't going to complain," the little girl trailed as she began flipping through the pages of the book again. "Claiming is a spell, right? A spell that binds you to another. I wonder how long it lasts..."
"For all eternity," Kagome responded.
"So, who is Lord InuTaisho with now? Daddy's mother? Or Uncle Inuyasha's mother?"
Kagome gave another smile. "I suppose it depends on which one you prefer. I like to think he is with both. The woman he claimed and the woman he died for. Both were very special to him."
Rin nodded. She liked that thought.
Kagome sighed as she leaned against the headboard of the bed. "There is more, Rin," she whispered.
The little girl turned to her mother.
"The act of claiming is a powerful spell. It binds you to another for all eternity. The only way you can die is by someone doing you physical harm. Old age and disease does not effect you," the miko told her daughter.
"Does that make you a demon, Momma?"
Kagome shook her head. "One cannot become a demon, my dearest," she explained. "However, I am, in a sense, immortal. I will live as long as your father lives and possibly even beyond then, though I doubt it. My life is tied to your father's life."
"How do you know this?"
"My mentor, Kaede, searched for the answer while we were battling Naraku. For as long as demons and humans have co-existed, there have only been two humans who have been claimed," Kagome related. "One human was a man who fell in love with a young demoness. He wooed her for three years before she finally gave in to his charms. They claimed each other and lived well after InuTaisho's time. One night, a pack of demons attacked their home. They both perished in the attack."
Rin sighed, "That's so sad. How did Lady Kaede find this out? Surely the demoness and her human mate kept it a secret?"
Kagome nodded. "That they did. It took Kaede a lot of patience and presistance to find out. They had already been dead for a hundred years when Kaede went to look for them. Both humans and demons have been trying to erase what they called idiocy from the world."
"Who is the other human?" Rin asked, though she already knew the answer. She was not disappointed.
Kagome smiled. "I am."
