Chapter Three: Dreams
Rin sat on the windowsill in her room. She gazed over the garden as her thoughts took her away from the mansion. Her thoughts centered on the demon who had kissed her.
Had it really happened? She pictured herself in the midnight blue car. She had been nervous, curious. She was so pampered, she wasn't used to getting out of any car by herself. She had waited for him to get out and open the door for her.
Ah! To hell with it all! he had snarled before he took her in his arms and kissed her.
Memory of that kiss brought warmth to her cheeks. It had been real. It had to be. The kiss was too passionate, to wanting for it to have been thought up.
Could it be true? Did Shippo carry feelings for her? Wouldn't that be the most amazing thing in the world?
Who wants to marry a stupid human? came the voice of one of the many demons that attended her school.
She sighed and bowed her head. Perhaps she was just imagining things. Shippo hadn't really kissed her. That had been her imagination. No. He didn't kiss her. He had made a deal with her. He promised not to tell her parents about the abuse she recieved at school. The deal maker was that, if she did get picked on, she would inform him immediately.
She felt her heart ache. Perhaps one day she would find some human somewhere who would marry her. If not, she was sure her father would. Or, perhaps he'd just let her to continue living in the mansion until she passed away. That way, he could make sure she didn't die by unnatural means.
She thought about a life of celibacy. Never married, never claimed, never touched. The thought appalled her, but she resigned herself to it. It was the only thing she could think of would happen. She'd never marry. She'd never find a human that equalled to Shippo. And the fox demon wouldn't ever want her.
That kiss had been a figment of her imagination... But, if that was true, why did she get butterflies in her stomach everytime she thought about it?
Shippo leaned against a large oak tree. If the class didn't kill him, Shippo knew the paperwork would. All he was doing was filling out his rollcall book. It shouldn't be that hard.
He wrote down Rin's name and then stared at it. Suddenly, his thoughts weren't on his work. Instead, they went back to earlier that day. When he had kissed her.
What had possessed him to move on that foolish act? Didn't he know what would happen if Sesshomaru found out? He knew Rin kept secrets from her parents. She hadn't told them about the kids at school picking on her. But, would she keep something like this a secret?
He had kissed her. And what was more, he yearned to do it again. She had tasted wonderful. And the way her body had melted into his... It was almost like they were meant for one another.
He toyed with that idea. When they had defeated Naraku, Shippo had decided to stay in the past with Inuyasha. It hadn't been a hard choice, for the fox demon felt as if that was where he belonged.
Rin had stayed in the present with Kagome. No one had really asked the little girl if she wanted to stay. It was Sesshomaru's decision to keep her there. He had felt she would be safer. Besides, he knew she wouldn't be long without him, for he would find her.
Shippo sighed. It had taken four years to find them. And it wasn't from lack of trying. Tokyo had become a huge city. And the demons had to take care to keep their identities secret. Not only that, but Sesshomaru had wanted to make sure he didn't interfere with any other time traveling Kagome was to do.
He understood why the dog demon had waited. It was important to ensure that Kagome didn't get confused. More so, if she was supposed to do something, they didn't want to stop her from doing it. That could prove disasterous.
He remembered the first time he had laid eyes on Rin after not seeing her for five hundred years. She was still young, but as cute as ever. Kagome had dressed her in modern clothes and the girl wore braids in her hair. He had known then that one day she'd grow up to be a beauty.
He had not expected this. He had watched as she became more beautiful each day. Momentarily, he wondered when he had decided he had an interest in her. Had to been at her last year's birthday. When she first threw him that melting look.
He smiled at the memory. Something about that look had stopped him in his tracks. He wanted to see that look again and again. He hadn't been disappointed.
He sighed as he pictured those large chocolate eyes, staring at him....
He growled when a foot planted itself on top of his head. He looked up to see his adopted father staring down at him. "You aren't as young as you used to be, Dad," he grumbled.
"What's that supposed to mean, huh?" Inuyasha retorted. "Plan on doing something?"
Shippo pushed the bare foot away and shrugged. He really didn't feel like engaging in a swordfight or anything right now. He wanted to immerse himself in Rin.
"So, what's got your tongue today?" the hanyou asked, when he realized Shippo wasn't going to rise to his bait.
The kitsune shrugged and gathered his paperwork. He stood up and looked at the half demon. "I think I'm going to head to my room for the night," he informed.
Inuyasha tilted his head at this. "You aren't going to eat?" he questioned. He never knew the fox demon to lack an appetite.
Shippo said nothing as he walked back into the house. In truth, he wasn't hungry. At least, not for food.
"How was school today?" Kagome asked as she slipped another spoon into InuTaisho's mouth.
Rin played with her rice and she shrugged as she answered, "It was alright, I guess. I got an A in English. Mr. Peabody wants us to write a poem in all English."
Kagome nodded. She laughed as the child spit out the mushed peas and carrots. "InuTaisho! You have to eat, my dear. One more bite and I'll get something else," she promised the infant.
Sesshomaru sat at the head of the table. "Is there anything else you wish to tell us, Rin?" he inquired, ever perceptive. He knew there was something she wasn't telling them. Something major.
Rin stopped at that and looked up at her father. Anything she wished to tell them? Did he know? Was it that obvious? For a moment, she studied the demon lord. Naturally, she saw nothing that would clue her into his thoughts, for he was unreadable to her. She shook her head. "No, not that I can think of," she responded.
"A little birdie told me that you were in Shippo's class," Kagome offered. She smiled when her young son took the food. It was about time.
The miko capped the baby food and took out another jar. This one, she knew he would eat. It was chicken fried rice.
While he was a half demon, InuTaisho carried the aura of a full demon. He had long black hair with silver streaks and large golden eyes. His skin was a soft milky peach in colour. Either side of his face sported a long baby blue strip that went from his hairline to his nose, across his cheek bone. The middle of his forehead had a cresent moon, like his father's. But, InuTaisho's was different. While Sesshomaru's moon went from right to left to right again, InuTaisho's went from left to right to left again. And the child's moon was a dark grey in colour.
The child giggled as he popped his mother on the hand. Kagome shook her head and tried to get him to eat again. He took the food and shook his head furiously from side to side, all the while waving his arms in front of him.
Rin suppressed a laugh as she answered her mother, "Yeah, I'm in Shippo's class. They finally got rid of that old hag."
"Rin!" her mother scolded.
The girl shrugged. "It's nothing that hasn't been said before. All the other students agree. The woman was horrible."
"If I remember correctly, the woman was a toad witch," Sesshomaru spoke softly, not taking his eyes off his daughter. "She wasn't meant to be kind."
Rin blushed a little. "It's still nicer to have Shippo teaching," she assured. "The class is so much easier now."
"Perhaps, with him teaching you, you can finally overcome your obsession with him," her father observed.
Rin's face paled. So, he had known? Her large eyes filled with fear. "Is it really that obvious?" she groaned.
Sesshomaru lifted a single eyebrow and looked to his wife. She smiled at him and gave him a slight nod. He turned back to his daughter. He had only guessed at his daughter's infatuation with the fox demon. He hadn't meant to speak honesty. Now that he looked at her, he knew it to be true. Rin was infatuated with Shippo.
He made a mental note to watch those two more closely. "You do little to hide your feelings, Rin. Perhaps you should work on that mask of yours. Right now, it speaks too clearly," the demon lord informed.
Rin shuddered. The last thing she wanted was for her father to know her feelings for Shippo. Now she would have to be a lot more careful.
The next few weeks went without incident. The fox demon taught the teenager with little problem and brought her home after school. They kept their conversations merry and without emotion. Neither looked at the other.
One afternoon, Shippo pulled into the driveway of Rin's home. He turned the car off, unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to her. "Rin, we have to talk," he told her.
The girl looked down at her hands and fiddled with her fingers. This wasn't what she wanted. She wanted to find a hole and crawl in it. To leave this car and hide in her room.
"Rin?" he whispered. He brought a finger to her chin and tilted her head up. He wanted to kiss her then, but he controlled himself.
He could see and smell the tears in her eyes. He wanted to kiss them away. "What is happening between us?" he asked instead.
"Dreams," she answered in a soft whisper. "It's all dreams. It has to be, for it could never occur in reality."
He smiled. "If this is a dream, I wish to never wake up. Why couldn't it ever occur? My mind says it's wrong, but my heart speaks differently. I want to be with you, Rin. I yearn to wake up every morning to see your face."
A tear fell from her eye down her cheek. He lifted a finger to wipe it away. "Don't you want the same?" he asked her, unsure of her feelings.
She nodded. "I have seen this moment in my dreams. But, it can't be," she told him, gazing into his blue eyes. "Not only are we demon and human, but my father would never accept the union."
He looked at her curiously. "Why not? If we care about each other so much, and I promise to protect you, what would it matter to him? It's not like I am unable to live up to my promise."
Rin shook her head. "Protect me? Care about me?" she questioned. "Those are fine words, Shippo. But, the real question is, do you love me? Without that ingredient, we will never be able to convince him."
With that, she did something she had never done before. She opened her own door and left the car.
