Chapter 3: Could Never Forget
"Feh, I could've made a better breakfast than this!" The silver-haired boy exclaimed upon the arrival of their dishes of pancakes and eggs. The waitress gave them a disdainful scowl before walking off, leaving the two alone.
"Oh, I don't know about that, Inu-chan," Kagome giggled, taking a forkful of scrambled eggs in her watering mouth. "At least these don't have fungus growing out of them."
He growled at her comment and took a mouthful himself, chewing sourly.
"Yeah, well, it gives the food more fiber!" He defended in between chews. She watched with tentative blue eyes as he swallowed, and then his eyes suddenly lit up as he mumbled a "Hey, this is good…"
"No duh, Sherlock."
He scowled once more, but shrugged when he only saw her change moods slightly and look out the window.
"Do you like it here?" She started after a few moments of silence and the clinking sound of silverware hitting china dishes stopped. Inuyasha looked up from his food.
"Well, it's okay. But like I said, I could care less about it. To me, it's just like an extended version of high school. Without the alarm clocks," He added. Kagome smiled at this, tilting her head to the side.
"I see, I guess so. Hey!" Her sapphire eyes lit up when she suddenly remembered a certain look-alike relative of hers. "How are you and Kikyo?" She asked, catching the boy's attention. Inuyasha shrugged, stuffing more eggs into his mouth roughly, and Kagome noticed he was doing his best to avoid her gaze.
"Feh. Fine, there's nothing going on with us really," He gruffly answered.
"Oh, really?" Kagome inquired.
"Shouldn't you know? I mean, you two ARE cousins, don't you talk?"
"Inuyasha, you and…" She hesitated for a moment, "…Sesshomaru," She said his name quietly, "are brothers. Does it necessarily mean that you talk on a daily basis?"
He glanced up at her momentarily, grinning his cocky grin as he sat back against his seat.
"Agh, I guess you're right. I have to remember you and Kikyo don't get along too well," He mused.
"You still didn't really answered my question," She started. Inuyasha grunted as if he was annoyed, but Kagome knew him better. After a long silence he spoke.
"She and I are doing this long distance relationship thing…" He said slowly, his tone soft and quiet from it's usual gruffness. Kagome looked curiously at him.
"You mean she doesn't go here?" She asked, surprised. "Man, I thought for sure Kikyo-sempai was going to get into Tokyo U…she sure got the grades for it…" Kagome mumbled.
"Feh, she said she preferred going to some snobby University off in England," Inuyasha began hastily shoving in his pancakes, acting as if he could care less. The young girl gazed at him with soft blue irises, catching the momentary flash of hurt that ran across his amber depths.
`He misses her…' She realized with a soft smile. True, years ago she had a little crush on the boy who now sat across from her, but Kagome knew he was nowhere in her reach when she saw him look at Kikyo the way he did.
Besides, after falling for Sesshomaru, she could truly see that all that she had felt for Inuyasha was more or less deep friendship that was misinterpreted.
"Don't worry," Kagome said softly to him, causing him to stop. "I mean, if she really loves you all that much, then I'm sure she misses you too…" Her voice trailed off as her eyes began to glaze over in thought. Inuyasha dropped his fork and looked carefully at her, a good guess on his mind that she spoke from experience.
His stomach churned, and his chest tightened, and even though he didn't think Kagome could feel it, there was a thick tension in the air. They couldn't avoid the subject forever. And he decided that he'd rather talk about it sooner rather than later.
"Kagome…" He called to her, and she blinked back into her surroundings. "Why did you…"
"Hmm?" She tilted her head to the side curiously. "What is it, Inuyasha?"
"Why did you stop keeping in touch with us?" He asked, and she froze. "With…HIM?" There he said it, and the girl across the table seemed to be overcome with some sort of guilt as she hung her head. Raven bangs casting dark shadows over her eyes.
Despite this, a small smile graced her lips, and she sighed.

He was tense. Every muscle in his body, every breath that passed his lips…He sat nearby in the restaurant, though just far enough in the dark corners to be concealed from their sight. Golden eyes narrowed in intensity as he watched them converse. Their voices were light and cheerful, joking and laughing in their reunion. It was if she had never left.
Sesshomaru suddenly felt that all too familiar surge of jealousy course through himself at seeing his brother get the simple pleasure of being in her company. Even more envious when he saw the way she smiled at his little comments now and then.
It was if they were back in their days of high school-before Kagome was his that is-where Sesshomaru would always look on in silent brooding at his brother's taken for granted blessing that was Kagome.
`She doesn't seem like she even remembers me…' He thought with a sudden feeling of anger. His fingers, still in his pocket, fingered the glossy photo from earlier, and he pulled it out to examine. His eyes softened when they rested upon her smiling face captured in the picture, and he let his anger melt away.
No, not his Kagome. He just couldn't bring himself to believe that she had forgotten. Afterall, she carried this picture with her all the way back to Tokyo, didn't she? She had been searching for him in the café in the morning, hadn't she? No, Kagome hadn't forgotten.
Sesshomaru was brought out of his thoughts by Kagome's voice.
"I mean, if she really loves you all that much, then I'm sure she misses you too…" She had said.
His heart seemed to skip a beat then. Was it just him, or did he catch a sense of longing laced in those words? It was almost as if, even though she was speaking of Inuyasha and Kikyo, she was implying…something else. And a little twinge of hope began to rise in his long dormant and emotionless soul.
Sesshomaru concentrated even harder to their conversation, and his hands became fists at the next topic of conversation.
"Why did you stop keeping in touch with us? With HIM?"
He held his breath…the question that had been plaguing him since the stop of her letters some time ago. Here was her reason. Sesshomaru kept golden eyes glued on her still form, which remained silent for a while. After a long while, a smile crossed her lips-one that threw into confusion. Was she happy about it? Or did she find the situation funny?
"I guess `sorry,' wouldn't be enough…" He let his thoughts cut off as her melodic voice drifted to his ears. The sound of her words still sounded like bells to him, he must've been a fool not to recognize her voice earlier. He leaned a bit farther from his seat as if to get a better hearing as Kagome started her explanation to his half-brother.
"You have to believe me when I say that I never meant to stop keeping contact with you," She began, her voice calm, but a bit of regret laced in it. "A year after I moved to Kyoto, my family began to run into problems…"
"What kind of problems?" Inuyasha asked, waiting for her answer. Sesshomaru saw her stiffen with the coming of her surfacing thoughts…a bit of worry rose within himself for the girl he watched from the shadows.
"One day at work, my mother collapsed…when we took her to the hospital, the doctor told us that…" Her voice began to quiver, and even from where he sat, he could see the tears began to form. He felt a horrible clenching at his chest when a single tear escaped her eyes.
"Inuyasha, my mother has heart cancer," Kagome choked out, not meeting his gaze.
Sesshomaru felt a sudden wave of guilt and sympathy crash over him. So that was her reason, and all this time he had thought she had forgotten, been angry at her for leaving him behind. He felt like a selfish child, while all the while she had been in turmoil…
"I was so scared…I knew she was dying…" She continued, the tears streaming freely down her cheeks. Inuyasha had stood up and walked over to her side, sitting beside her. "But I couldn't do anything…the medical bills started coming, and with Mom not going to work as much as she used to, it was barely enough for us to pay for the house…
"I had to get a job to help pay it all off…" Kagome's tears began to die away, and she was now only sniffling. Inuyasha draped a comforting arm around her trembling frame, and Sesshomaru all but growled, wishing that he was the one offering her comfort this very moment instead.
"It's okay, `Gome," He said soothingly. "You managed, didn't you?" The girl shook her head.
"I keep thinking, that it's all so useless…there's no real cure, and yet I'm fighting so hard to avoid the inevitable. It was hard, juggling schoolwork and my job. I had to get as many hours as possible.
"It's a miracle I passed with grades decent enough to get into this school." Kagome wiped one of her tears, her eyes solemn. "I keep telling myself that it'll get better, that I wouldn't have to worry anymore if one day I'll wake up, and Momma won't be there anymore…"
Sesshomaru watched with turmoil as Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her, patting her back in a comforting manner.
"Somewhere along the way, I found myself too tired or too busy to even think about writing letters…" She admitted. "I'm sorry…"
That was it, he couldn't take it anymore. Grabbing the picture from the table, Sesshomaru stood up from his seat, thinking it time to reveal himself. As he walked briskly to where his brother comforted her, conflicting emotions ran through his head like wildfire.
Here he was, pining over some petty business arrangement and thinking she abandoned him while she was left to endure this pain alone…He wished he could've been there to help her through it…he could've sent her money, helped her through her studies, ANYTHING!
His fists clenched at his sides.
`If only she had told me…' Sesshomaru thought through clenched teeth.
Before he knew it, he was in front of them, standing sternly by their table with an unreadable emotion etched on his face. He saw Kagome pull back from his half-brother and her eyes widen in an array of mixed emotions.
And he was sure…that she felt it too. This feeling of regret and excitement that was building within them.

Inuyasha felt the girl against him stiffen and a delicate gasp escaped her as she drew from his comforting embrace. Her sapphire eyes were wide, and her mouth was slightly parted in shock.
He turned around to the direction she was staring, and let go of Kagome as if she was on fire. `Brother…'
"S-Sesshomaru," Kagome barely whispered, her voice was mixed with sense of elation and sorrow.
He only stared back emotionlessly, but somewhere in his golden depths, flickered with a long dormant flame.
"Inuyasha, I need to speak with her, ALONE," He said coldly.
"Uh…."
Without letting him finish, he brushed past his brother and took Kagome by the arm, pulling her up from her seat and walking out the door.
"H-Hey!" She squeaked, her tone questioning. He turned to her momentarily, his gaze intense.
"We need to talk," was all he said, before turning away once more, still holding tightly onto her arm as he led her out of the restaurant.
As the bells rang, signifying that they left, Inuyasha sat alone at the table, his jaw slightly dropped and at a loss of words. That wasn't exactly how he pictured their meeting would be…but then again, it WAS Sesshomaru.
Moments later, a waitress came up to him asking to refill his cup.
"Yeah, sure," He croaked, regaining his composure, then all but lost it again when she placed the check on the table, spraying orange juice over the table.
She glared at him, her hand on her hip.
"Ugh, what a mess! Just for that, I had better get a big tip…" She murmured, walking away.
"That much for that crappy meal?! I prefer the fungus! YOU HEAR ME!" He yelled after the waitress, grumbling to himself at Sesshomaru and Kagome for leaving him with the bill.

Kagome felt a jumbled mix of emotions course through her as Sesshomaru continued to drag her down the street. Confusion, happiness, nervousness, fear, and longing. The emotion that stuck out the most was confusion, especially when he took her to his car, opened the passenger seat, pushed her in, and got in himself.
When the door closed behind him, Kagome decided to break their awkward silence.
"Sesshomaru, I-"
She was instantly interrupted when his lips came crashing down upon hers in a fevered kiss. His lips hungrily consuming and fierce as he let years of pent up passion and forgotten emotions spill forth. Not being able to resist, Kagome let out a soft moan, allowing him access to her mouth.
Sesshomaru wasted not time in slipping his tongue between her lips, getting reacquainted with her moist cavern. He leaned farther and farther over to her side, letting his hands roam her curves.
They parted for air, their breathing heavy and eyes half-lidded as they stared at each other heatedly.
"Kagome, my Kagome…" His voice was low and husky as he brought up slender fingers to entangle themselves in her hair, "Why didn't you tell me? Why did you hide? We wasted so much time…" He whispered, claiming her lips once more before she could respond.
He drew her taut against him, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, drawing him closer as he was now practically on top of her on the passenger seat, which he swiftly lowered.
"I…I didn't want to worry you…I thought I could fix it on my own," Kagome let out a moan when his lips found their way to her sensitive skin on her neck, sucking and nipping before licking sensuously up to her ear.
"I had thought…" He kissed her jaw, "That you had forgotten…" A kiss on her nose, "about us…" He sealed their lips hungrily.
"I could never forget…" She moaned, raining kisses all over his face as she let her love run wild after three years. "I had to come back and find you…I love you, Sesshomaru." All of the breath left her when she felt his hands cup her breast through the fabric of her clothes.
"Gods, Kagome, love…" He groaned, nuzzling her neck and inhaling sharply, taking in her sweet scent that he had to go on so long without. "It's been so long…" He pressed his hard form against her to show her his need for her, and she blushed a pretty shade.
The air was thick with their passion, their long buried love as they sought to refill the void that grew without the other. Sesshomaru sighed in contentment as he felt her arch against his touch, his heated hands finding an opening to their clothes.
He had almost forgotten THIS…the way it felt to have Kagome in his arms, wrapped in her warmth, and being in the center of her love, her passion.
"I need you, love…" He moaned against her throat, causing her to shudder. Sesshomaru's nimble fingers already started to work on unbuttoning her blouse, licking a path down the valley of her breasts before he unclasped the material.
When she was released of it, he instantly let his lips cover her nipples, swirling and nipping at her hardened flesh. Kagome moaned, biting her lower lip as if to stop herself from making too much noise.
Her fingers buried themselves in his hair as he continued his attention on her breasts, and she arched into him as his hands roamed her body feverishly, almost desperately.
Gasping for air, Kagome let her eyes fall on her hand buried in his silver mane, and then trailed over to her wrist, where her watch hung limply. Sapphire eyes widened in realization.
"OMIGOSH!" She started, causing Sesshomaru to stop and look up at her questioningly. "I'm going to be late for my first class!" She groaned, sitting up and looking frantically for her bra.
But in the blink of an eye, she was pushed back onto the lowered passenger seat. Kagome let out a surprised "eep," as she met with Sesshomaru's heated golden gaze. He pressed harder against her, growling softly.
"Skip class today, there will be others," He breathed, kissing her once more in hopes of persuading her. There was no way she was going to leave him here like this, after all this time of wanting and waiting…not now when he was so badly in need of her.
Kagome moaned softly, but broke away, shaking her head and giggling.
"Sessho, it's my first day…Please?" She pleaded, and he all but gave in.
Slumping over her, he sighed and rolled off of her, and went back to his seat. All the while, he watched as Kagome fixed her rumpled clothes and blushed a deep crimson. He smiled.
When she was done, he pulled her in for a chaste, but alluring kiss.
"We will continue this later, my Kagome…" He promised against her flushed lips. Face red, she nodded slowly, and twisted her fingers nervously.
"Um, Sessho?" She started. "Can you drive me back to campus?" Chuckling softly, he nodded, and started the car, for the first time in a while, feeling complete once more.
