CHAPTER TWO :) Steak and Rice
"Kagome?" He released his grip around her, lifting her chin with a smooth caress of his finger to catch her eyes. That was a mistake he realized later on. Everything vanished from his mind as he gazed deep into Kagome’s eyes, which had become soft and timid. InuYasha felt his heart speed up and his mouth went dry.
Kagome could only stare at him, lost in his gaze. Her mind again plunged back through time, recalling a similar situation to what was in front of her now. Back to when they had first met, maybe it was a little while after that, but she could see the two of them sitting under a tree, InuYasha giving her that strange look and almost kissing her. Well maybe Kikyo was whom he had been seeing then, but this was different. She knew deep down that it was Kagome InuYasha was starring at, not his former…girlfriend, if that’s what you called her.
"Inu...Yash," Her words were cut short as InuYasha took her lips in his, taking her breath away. She gasped into their kiss in surprise and longing. Hours seemed to pass before he let her take a breath only to capture his prey again, being gentler than before. Kagome showed no sign of resistance, returning his kisses, begging for more, allowing his curious tongue inside to explore her.
His lips teased her, sometimes claiming her mouth, other times grasping the upper or lower parts. InuYasha was becoming more curious as he raked Kagome’s neck with piercing eyes. Dare he? Would she shrink away? He couldn’t resist the biting urge to taste her skin and releasing Kagome’s lips once again, he latched onto her tender flesh. Kagome let out another startled gasp as she felt the warmth of InuYasha’s breath caress her skin along with his exploring tongue. Shivers scattered throughout her body as he ran his tongue across her throat feeling his fangs tickle the sensitive spots.
InuYasha continued his teasing and exploration, pleased with Kagome’s trembling response. He felt her hands slide up his neck, fingers tangling in his long, silvery hair. His hands crept around her waist, pulling her close to him, feeling Kagome’s warm body pressing against his. A sudden flame lit up throughout InuYasha’s body and a growl escaped his throat. What was it that he longed for? He was having difficulty staying in control of his burning body. His lust was fighting for that control. He wanted to scoop Kagome up and away, wanted to feel her bare skin beneath him, wanted to hear her moan and cry out his name as he made love to her.
Kagome’s body tensed up as she jerked away from InuYasha’s greedy mouth, startled by the sharp pain on the side of her neck. InuYasha caught the scent of Kagome’s blood. He winced realizing he had nipped her during his raging thoughts. He quickly lapped up the beads of blood that began to form around the wound.
Kagome relaxed against him again, but the bite had snapped her back into her senses. She reluctantly pulled away from InuYasha’s mouth, releasing her grip of his neck and hair. She looked up at him shyly not exactly knowing what to say. Her body still thrummed all over and she felt her free hands trembling. "...InuYasha...?" She whispered in a small voice. This silence was driving her crazy.
InuYasha gave a weak smile and took Kagome’s hands in his, giving them a warm squeeze. He opened his mouth to say something but his words were lost as his sharp ears caught the sound of shocked voices and whispers. He turned towards the noise, Kagome following his gaze.
"Oh God! I don’t believe it! Sota! Gramps..." Kagome choked out in embarrassment, turning red and pale all over. Had they been spying on them the whole time? Kagome’s younger brother and grandfather stood stupefied at the sight before them. I’ll kill them the nosy brats! InuYasha a little help here... InuYasha’s face matched the redness of Kagome. He swallowed the lump that formed in his throat at the sight of spying eyes.
Just then, Kagome’s mother popped up out of nowhere. "Sota, could you be a dear and run to the store to pick up some milk for me? I believe we’re running low." Without waiting for a reply, Ms. Higurashi handed her son a small pouch of money and gave him a small push to shoo him on his way. Next she turned to her aging father and smiled warmly. "I need your help with something..." She said leading him into the house. "But...but...what about Ka..." Kagome’s grandfather’s voice vanished as the door shut behind him.
InuYasha and Kagome looked at each other completely lost at what had just happened. "Umm, I...I think that was mothers way of saying ‘time for me to go’..." Kagome finally spoke up. I owe mom big time... She rose from InuYasha’s lap still blushing. "...are you staying over tonight?" She just had the sudden itch to ask. "I guess so," InuYasha answered seeing the pleading look in her eyes. "If you want me to." Kagome nodded and took his hand to lead him into her house.
Shift...
Later that night Kagome had a talk with her mother about the earlier day’s event. To her relief, she didn’t get a lecture as she had expected. Instead her mother just smiled and asked if InuYasha was staying over. "Yes, he’s playing with Sota I think." Kagome was confused but wasn’t about to ask questions.
As she turned to leave, her mother pressed a paper bag in her hands. "Do me a favor and take this back with you when you cross over to the Feudal Era ok? It may come in handy." Kagome smiled and headed back to her room, curious as to what her mom had given her. The sound of a ringing phone distracted her from opening the bag and she stuffed it in her yellow book bag before running to answer it.
She raced to the phone, beating her grandfather to it. "Hello?" There was a pause. "Kagome? It’s about time I got a hold of you!" Came an oddly familiar voice at the other end. "Tioen?" Kagome instantly recognized her favorite cousin’s voice.
Shift...
InuYasha sat in a comfortable spot in the corner of Sota’s room. He watched Sota playing his weird "video games" on the odd black box in front of him. "Wanna play a game?" Sota asked, offering the Half-Demon the controller to his game. InuYasha shook his head, not wanting to move from his corner. "No thanks." "Suit yourself then." Sota shrugged and started a new game.
InuYasha’s ear twitched. He could pick up Kagome’s voice in the other room, listening to the bits and pieces of her conversation she was having with the thing that everyone called a "phone". This world is so weird and strange, he thought. The sites, sounds, and smells were still new to him. He wondered how anyone could stand living in such a crowded place. Did Kagome like it here better than his world?
He thought about the earlier event of that day. He couldn’t believe he had kissed her. And not only did he give her a simple kiss. But she didn’t reject him. She seemed to enjoy it. Maybe it was him, but it was like she was begging for more. He remembered how she tasted, her skin and lips. It drove him crazy just thinking about it. Every hair on the back of his neck stood on end and shivers crawled down his spin. He had never desired anyone before. Not even Kikyo...
InuYasha moved uncomfortably as that thought popped into his head. Kikyo and Kagome. They were so alike but so different... His thoughts were interrupted by a loud scream erupting from Kagome’s room. He was on his feet in a heartbeat. A demon? I don’t smell one... were him immediate thoughts as he bounded up the stairs to Kagome’s room. He shoved the door open ready to draw his sword anyway.
"Kagome, what the..." Kagome jumped on InuYasha and hugged him tightly. A second later she realized what she was doing and quickly let him go, taking off down the stairs to hide her blush and to tell her mother the news. InuYasha just stood there in the middle of the room in a complete daze. Ok... that was a new one... He glanced down the hall and decided to wait for Kagome’s return.
Kagome found her mother busy in the kitchen. "Mom! Tioen just called, there’s a family reunion being held next month!" Her mother looked up from chopping meat as if trying to remember something. "Oh that’s right. I thought I was forgetting something. Hmm, it’s around your birthday I think. If I can recall correctly, Tioen wanted to plan something special for you when we go." Kagome blinked. "My birthday?" How could THAT have slipped my mind? My birthday is already here? Where did that calendar go...
As if reading her mind, Ms. Higurashi pointed to the left where a calendar hung on the wall. "When did you put that up?" Kagome asked even though she already knew the answer. "While you were gone. Kagome? When do you plan on leaving with InuYasha? I want you home a few days before the reunion. We are all going together, no excuses. Why not invite some friends?" "If I know Yuka and the others, they don’t need an invitation. I bet they already know and have plans made as we speak." Kagome rolled her eyes and laughed.
Now I have to break the news to InuYasha. This is going to fun... Kagome sighed, really not wanting to have another fight with him. But he might not argue this time... it’s around my birthday after all... "I’m leaving tomorrow afternoon if everything gets packed in time. Don’t worry about me, I promise to be back before the reunion. Who would miss their own birthday?" "Who would forget their own birthday?" her mother countered with a smile. "Very funny. I’m laughing, really."
Kagome left her mother and headed back to her room. She wasn’t surprised to find InuYasha settled in the middle of her bed with a sleepy look on his face. "You take too long." he yawned. "Wake up boy, we need to talk." "Feh. Damn right we do. Why’d you scream and...well...uh..." He scratched at his ear blushing as he came to the embracing part.
"That’s what I need to talk to you about...I screamed because I got a little too exited. My cousin called. There’s a family reunion coming up in about a month and I have to go." Kagome waited for InuYasha to explode. "So," was all he said.
"I’ll have to come home for about a week..." "Another week!" That did it. "InuYasha please don’t yell. Mom says I have to go because it’s on my birthday. The reunion lasts four days, it’s in a neighboring city and all my family and friends will be there. I haven’t seen them in years...it's...important to me." Kagome pleaded with the irritated Half-Demon. "Why not come with us?" InuYasha swallowed what he was about to say as her words sunk in. Her birthday? "What ever." He managed to spit out, his mind was suddenly full and he needed some time to think before he said something he didn’t mean.
Rolling off the bed, InuYasha slid open Kagome’s window and slipped into the dark night without another word. Well he didn’t put up much of a fight this time... But he didn’t even say anything. Why is he acting so strange...first he fights with me and then he gets all cuddly...he must be coming down with something, that’s the only thing I can think of. Kagome threw herself on her bed and grabbed her pillow. She buried her head in it and screamed out her frustration until her throat hurt. This love business is so tangling. Once you get caught, there’s no escape. And that’s what I need, some place to escape to...too bad I can’t drag my bathtub back with me...
Shift...
InuYasha found a comfortable branch up in the Sacred Tree and settled down to think. He dug his claws into the bark of the branch to ease his irritation. Kagome has been here for seven days and now she wants to come back another week? What did I do now? Every time Kagome came home, it had something to do with her being mad at him or some big test was coming up.
He thought of what she had said a few minutes ago, something about her birthday. From past experiences, he knew how important birthdays were to Kagome. When word had slipped out about Sango’s birthday, Kagome went to work to create something special for her. Miroku, Shippo, and even Kaede had helped her put together a small party. Cake and other goodies had been brought from Kagome’s world along with gifts that had made the Demon Slayer cry with happiness. It had taken tons of ‘Sits’ to get him to even budge when Kagome had asked for help and she even went to the trouble of getting a present for him to give to Sango when he refused to participate. He knew he had hurt her then and he regretted it afterwards.
InuYasha sighed at that memory. The irritation faded away from him as his mind began to mull over the next problem. A gift. Kagome would never forgive him if he just ignored her birthday. From what he saw with Sango’s party, the birthday girl, or boy, got presents. He thought it odd but of course no one had ever celebrated the day he was born. Instead they scorned his very existence.
So what did you get a Miko? Maybe he could threaten Miroku for some ideas. He seemed rather good with that kind of stuff. The sound of a sliding door pulled his attention away from his thoughts. Kagome’s scent flooded his nose as a dark shadow moved across the ground. "InuYasha?"
Kagome couldn’t see anything outside. She called for InuYasha but nobody answered her when she looked up into the tree. Sighing she headed to the shrine and pulled open the wooden doors. I guess he went back...it figures. Kagome closed the doors and walked back over to the tree. She saw the empty bench beside it and sat down, not wanting to go back inside just yet. "One year. It’ll be a whole year, it’s hard to imagine." she mumbled aloud. "A whole year for what?"
InuYasha landed on the ground in front of Kagome making her jump at his sudden appearance. "God InuYasha do you like scaring people or something?" Kagome growled at him when he sat down next to her. No answer. Kagome didn’t feel much like talking at the moment so she kept quite waiting for him to say something.
"We...met on...your birthday I think...didn’t we?" InuYasha surprised Kagome by saying that. She nodded and smiled. "The day you tried to kill me, how could I forget." InuYasha winced at that remark. He hated it when she brought it up. "It’s also the day I gave you a second chance on life." She tried to take the sting out of her first sentence. "I never understood why, but even when you hated my guts, there was something about you that made me...I don’t know, comforted, like you weren’t someone I should fear."
Kagome’s confession rang through InuYasha’s ears. He knew she was telling the truth. Time and time again Kagome had tried to be friends with him, talking about her world as they were forced to travel together searching for the Jewel Shards and healing his wounds when he was injured from a fight. It had taken some time to get used to her, but he soon realized how much she truly cared that night when she had cried for him for the first time. No one had ever shed tears for him aside from his mother. But that night when he was caught in the web of a Spider-head demon in his human form, when she cried because she was afraid of loosing him, that he would never forget.
InuYasha opened his mouth to speak but was cut off when Kagome put a finger to his lips. "Time to eat. Everyone else didn’t feel like waiting so we get the leftovers." She got up and headed for the house with InuYasha following behind her.
When they entered the kitchen, it was apparent that supper had already been devoured. Ms. Higurashi was at work washing the last of the dishes and smiled as the two came in. "Kagome there’s food left for you both in the fridge in case you’re hungry." Her mother said as she put the last clean plate away. "I don’t know about you, but I’m wiped out. See you in the morning." She kissed her daughter good night and headed off to bed.
Kagome wondered if her mother was making an excuse to give her some space alone with InuYasha. Now that I think about it, I could have sworn there was a spark of mischief in her voice. Mothers! InuYasha tried to wait patiently for Kagome to find something to eat. He cleared his throat to get her attention and was rewarded a couple minutes later with a plate of steak and rice only to have Kagome grab it back away from him. "Hey! Give it back!" "Oh stop whining, let me cut up the meat first..." She popped his hand when he tried to snatch back the plate. When it came to her mother’s steak, InuYasha could be an animal.
"Here Animal, I hope you’re satisfied." Kagome handed InuYasha his plate and grabbed her own before heading for the couch. She settled into a comfortable spot, motioning InuYasha to sit next to her. Flipping on the TV, Kagome decided to end her wild day with a dare and leaned against InuYasha. She gobbled down a few bites on her plate as if not noticing what she had done and waited for his reaction.
She was thrilled when InuYasha suddenly put down his food (something he would never do when there was meat involved) and pulled her own out of her grasp, kissing her square on the lips. Not what I expected but I’m not complaining. She kissed him back in a teasing manner wondering just how far she could get him to go. A shudder crawled down her spine when she felt his claws slide across her back unexpectedly and she couldn’t suppress the moan that crept from her throat.
InuYasha pulled Kagome up onto his lap so he could look her in the eye. It took everything in his power to stay in control after he heard her moan from his teasing. "Stop with the teasing...other wise you’ll unleash a monster..." He growled warningly.
Kagome reluctantly obeyed and curled up instead on his lap feeling the warmth of his arms around her. He had to spoil the fun... she thought and then smiled sadly. I doubt he’ll be like this when we go back tomorrow. He’ll go back to hiding again...like always...Kagome sighed, deciding to enjoy the time she was spending with him while she still had it.
That’s how they were found the next morning, Kagome wrapped up asleep in InuYasha’s arms on the couch with the TV left on and two unfinished plates pushed aside on the floor.
