Chapter 2:

Damasu stood at the top of a cliff looking at the forest below, trying to catch the scent of the demon who murdered her mate. The wind blew her shoulder-length auburn hair wildly and the sun made her cover her emerald eyes to protect them from the glare. On her face she had three black stripes on each cheek.  She wore a dark green leather band around her chest that ended just below her bosom allowing a single stripe to show wrapping itself around her stomach. On her arms were lilac colored sleeves that started halfway down from her shoulder. She had leggings that were a few shades darker than her sleeves with a black belt that had a yellow cat's eye design for the buckle. The wind shifts direction and then she caught it, the scent of the demon Naraku...

~*~*~*~*~

"I sense the presence of a sacred jewel shard; it’s not far, head north."

Inu-Yasha shifted and leapt in the direction that Kagome indicated, "this place reeks of Naraku; it’s about time he came out of hiding." They dropped through the trees into a clearing, waiting there was a baboon skin covered person, "Naraku." Kagome got off of Inu-Yasha's back and he drew his Tetsusaiga. "Prepare to die puppet, Wind Scar!" The demon puppet dodged and sent out roots, surrounding Inu-Yasha, faster than he could react, and started to squeeze. "Damn" Inu-Yasha gritted his teeth and struggled to move but to no avail.

"Hiraikotsu!” Sango's over-sized boomerang sliced the roots, freeing Inu-Yasha who charged towards the puppet "Iron Reaver Soul Stealer!" His claws tore through the puppet, drenching him in its blood and it disappeared leaving a broken wood carving wrapped with a string of hair.

"That was too easy, something's up" said Inu-Yasha sheathing his sword. "He had no jewel shards though, are they still in the area?"

"Yes, two of them approaching fast, Kouga maybe?"

Inu-Yasha sniffed the air "well I don't smell him but maybe he's downwind. Stupid wolf, I'll kill him on the spot and take his jewel shards" he cocked his head and snorted.

~*~*~*~*~

'I was right, I can smell Naraku; his stench is everywhere.' Damasu was in her tiger-demon form, traveling faster on four feet than she could on two. Spotting a clearing through the trees, she slowed to a prowl and crept closer. What she saw was a peculiar group of people. A monk, a demon slayer, a kitsune cub, a cat youkai, some strange yet attractive woman in foreign clothes and what appeared to be a half-dog demon. She thought 'appeared' because he smelled of Naraku and she believed it was another trap using a different form.

The strange woman pointed in Damasu's direction, "the jewel shards are there."

'How did she know where I am? Much less that I have two jewel shards.' Seeing no reason to hide anymore she stepped through and changed back to her human form.

Kagome gasped with shock and confusion, she was attracted to this tiger-youkai. There was something about the savage look of the black stripes on her face and arms, fiery-red hair framing her face with incredibly green eyes. She shook her head to clear it and turned to Inu-Yasha. "She has a jewel shard in each hand."

"Feh, hey kitty, hand over the jewel shards and you won't get killed."

"Inu-Yasha!" Kagome hissed, but he ignored her.

"I would never hand over my shards, especially to the demon who killed my mate" Damasu crouched, ready to spring at a moment’s notice.

"If I killed your mate then it’s only because he deserved it. Enough talking" he drew his sword "prepare to die!" Swinging his sword he narrowly missed.

The tiger-youkai twisted mid-air and slashed his shoulder, cutting deeply so the bone was exposed. The smell of his hanyou blood filled her senses. She landed and held out a hand in a stopping gesture. "Wait, I believe there has been a mistake."

"Yeah, and it was me missing you" he said lifting his sword in preparation to swing again.

"No, I was quick to attack you. You reeked of the demon who killed my mate, but the smell of your blood is different" she flecked some it off of her claws. "I'm afraid that we started off on the wrong foot, my name is Damasu" she said extending her still bloody hand towards Inu-Yasha who didn't lower his sword.

"I may not be Naraku but we still need those jewel shards in your hands" he raised his sword higher, swirls enveloped it "Wind-"

"SIT BOY!"

*Fwump* "What the hell was that for?!" He shouted over Damasu's laughter.

"She made a mistake, she's on our side" Kagome turned to Damasu "sorry about that, he's more brawn than brain." Inu-Yasha had picked himself up at that point and sent a 'feh' in their direction. "My name is Kagome.”

Damasu wiped the blood off of her hand and took Kagome's in both of hers "it's a pleasure to meet you Kagome." The way she purred over the word 'pleasure' made Kagome think of its other meaning and it made her blush.

They stood like that until Miroku butted in, taking Damasu's hand "I am the monk known as Miroku, would you do me the honor of bearing my child?"

"If you want to keep your hands I suggest you remove them" she said flexing the claws of her free hand.

"Right" Miroku hurriedly let go and raised them in surrender before stepping back. "This is Sango, Shippo, and the cat is Kirara" he said to Damasu pointing to each respectively "and that’s Inu-Yasha."

Inu-Yasha refused to turn around but sat with his legs and arms crossed, his sword resting against his uninjured shoulder "feh."

"Don't mind him, he's just pouting because he didn't beat you" Kagome said.

"I AM NOT WENCH!" Besides, we barely started that fight. I would have won if we finished."

Damasu laughed "you're lucky that I noticed your scent when I did, with my jewel shards it’s simple to slice through you like warm butter." To demonstrate she split a boulder next to him like it was nothing "I stopped my attack before I got to your heart."

Inu-Yasha looked down and saw that the cuts indeed just barely missed. He could survive holes through his stomach with no problem, but if something took his heart out then he was a goner. "You shouldn't have jumped to conclusions so quickly; then I wouldn't even be injured."

"You're one to talk, who was it that demanded my shards at sword point?"

Inu-Yasha had the courtesy to blush and muttered to himself.

"It's getting late, would you like to join us for our evening meal?" asked Kagome.

"Sure, there's a stream nearby, I'll go catch some fish to add to the fire." She shifted back into her tiger form and ran out of the clearing.

"What did you do that for wench? We can't trust her."

"Why not?"

"She tried to kill me for one."

"Well you tried to kill her too."

Inu-Yasha gritted his teeth before replying "we don't know anything about her! She could want your jewel shards, it would be easy to kill you in your sleep and steal them."

Kagome just rolled her eyes "she's not after the shards, she's after Naraku."

"Maybe she could travel with us, its gets lonely on your own" Sango added.

~*~*~*~*~

Later that evening the group was sitting around the fire finishing their meal, and Shippo set his fish bones down "What did Naraku do to you Damasu?"

Damasu stared at the fire, flames reflecting in her sad eyes. "He killed my mate trying to get the jewel shards from us. We were the leaders of our tiger-clan and when I found the jewel shards I wanted them to be used to protect my people. We each had one in our right hand enhancing the strength of our claws enabling us to finally be able to defend our territory from the neighboring wolf tribe. Things were calming down when he attacked. I was coming back from scouting the area when I smelled the blood of my lover. I ran there as fast as I could but I was too late. I saw a woman in a kimono that had fans that threw blades of wind. My mate lay in pieces before me and the demon had her back to me, reaching to pick the shard. I leapt towards her slashing in her direction. She must have seen me because she got out of the way just in time, then manipulated the body of my own mate to fight me while she got away. Before she left she told me that Naraku had sent her, and to remember her scent because she was from him. I got the shard from my mate and placed it in my left hand and swore revenge. I resigned my position as clan leader and set out to kill Naraku." Damasu's fists were clenched so tight that blood trickled through from her claws. A solitary tear rolled down her cheek "it happened a few months ago."

"I'm sorry about your mate" said Sango "Naraku slayed my village and he has my brother under his control."

"We all have a reason to want Naraku dead," Miroku put in, "he cursed the males of my family with the wind tunnel. Shippo's father was killed by the thunder brothers and Inu-Yasha-" he was stopped by a glare from the hanyou.

"Story time is over. Get some sleep, we leave in the morning." Inu-Yasha huffed before taking his customary place in the treetops.

Damasu watched Kagome as she looked in Inu-Yasha's direction with saddened eyes "so miko, what is your story?"

Kagome answered without averting her gaze, not trusting herself to look in Damasu's eyes again. "At first I was only here to help collect the jewel shards, but after seeing what he has done to my friends and many others...I can't rest easy until he is vanquished." Kagome looked at Damasu "wouldn't you agree?"

Damasu nodded "beings like him give the rest of us demons bad names. I have only hurt humans in self-defense, when they come for a bounty of my tribe. The Tiger-Clan has never hunted humans, but after Naraku came around demons of all kinds were blamed and hated."

Kagome was startled by the hurt and anger in those green eyes flecked with gold from the fire. "Many people have suffered at the hands of Naraku, you are not alone." Kagome scooted over and put an arm around the troubled youkai.

The calming presence of the miko broke down the barriers around Damasu's heart. "I didn't even get to say goodbye" Damasu sobbed, and for the first time in her life she wept for her mate, her lost tribe members, and, herself.
