He grabbed her arm as she was falling into the well. Startled at the sudden pull, she looked up and saw amber eyes gazing at her.

“Inuyasha, what are you doing?”

He pulled her over the lip of the well and into his arms. “Don’t go. I don’t want you to leave.”

“Please, let me go,” she begged, her voice muffled in his sleeve. “I have no place here. I don’t belong.”

“You belong with me.”

She pulled from his hold to look into his face, uncertain if she had heard correctly.

“You have Kikyo. You don’t need me! I’m nothing more than a jewel detector!” She was screaming at him as the tears poured down her face. “I’ve waited for a long time to hear you say those words. Why couldn’t you have said something sooner?

Walking towards the well, she peered into the blackness. With her back towards him, she could not see the anguish on his face. “It’s too late, Inuyasha. Say your goodbyes and let me go. I thought I could stay with you, even if it meant following Kikyo, too. But I can’t.”

She fell to her knees beside the well, her head buried in her hands. Her body shook with the intensity of her sobs. Dropping down beside her, he smoothed her hair with the back of his hand.

“Kagome, please let me explain.”

“You left me alone last night to go to her. I knew then that I would always be second best.” She turned to him, tears streaking down her face unchecked. “I won’t live in her shadow any longer. If my place isn’t here. Then I will find it on the other side of the well, in my own time.”

She grabbed her back pack from where it had been discarded when he first pulled her out. She made to stand, but was caught up in his embrace once more.

He held her tightly as she struggled against him. Soon her fighting ceased and he tenderly positioned her head beneath his chin. He began smoothing her hair away from her face, running his fingers through the soft ebony strands.

“You stupid girl,” he said, without malice. “Don’t you know that I need you. I was afraid to tell you for so long. I didn’t want anyone to use you against me. Naraku already tried to use you once. If he had known how I truly felt, there’s no telling what he would have done.”

“I went to Kikyo last night to tell her good bye. I couldn’t follow her, because my heart was here with you. I’ve done all that I can for her, Kagome. I’ve avenged her death. I had hoped to give her peace, but I realize now that only she can find it. I think she understands. She doesn’t have long left in this world.”

Kagome turned to face him, only to find his eyes brimming with unshed tears. He gently cupped her chin in the palm of his hand, looking deeply in her eyes, he said: “Your place is here.” He put her hand over his heart. “You belong with me and I-I belong with you. I won’t let you go.”

She brushed the tears from his eyes. “I’m so glad, because I didn’t want to leave.” Then she lovingly touched his lips with her own.
