That night the group stayed up well into the night discussing further plans, strategies and just idle chitchat. It felt nice to be able to relax without the hostel atmosphere that seemed to have been following them for the past couple of days. One by one the inutachi hunkered down for the night. They had an early start in the morning. Sango slept on a transformed Kirara, far far away from the cursed hands of a certain monk. Miroku slept against a wall with his staff against his shoulder. Shippou was cuddled up with Kagome in her sleeping bag and Inuyasha was leaning against the closest wall to the miko. All in all it seemed that everyone was sound asleep. Everyone except for the half demon and priestess.

 

`Well now would be as good a time as any to talk to him while everyone's asleep. I don't want to just drop this bomb on him and disappear through the well. It wouldn't be fair. He should know ahead of time.'

 

“Inuyasha.”

“What is it?” Came the grumpy reply.

“Can we go outside for a minute? We need to talk.”

 

Well he wasn't expecting that. Her tone of voice indicated that it was something serious. `Why do I get the feeling that it's something that I don't wanna hear?!' If she had to tell him something important there was no way of getting out of it, she would just osuwari him to get him to listen. Getting up he proceeded to go outside, not even waiting to see if she would follow. He knew she would. When he deemed they were far away from prying eyes and ears he turned to her.

She was looking at the ground fiddling with her fingers. A habit he learned that meant she was nervous. Sniffing the air he picked up nervousness and guilt. `Ok now I know that whatever she has to say won't be good. Time to get this over with.'

“Oi, spit out already!”

`Straight to the point I see. Alright here goes nothing.'

“Lately I've been thinking, thinking about my future actually.”

“AND.”

“And I think I should spend a little extra time in the future, maybe a couple of weeks to a month to catch up with school and spend some time with my friends and family.”

 

`Here it comes 3…2…1…….'

“A month?! Are you out of you damn mind?! No!!!” Came the angry reply.

“Oh come on Inuyasha be reasonable. I need this time away. I need this time to myself. I have to start thinking of my future. My family misses me and my friends back home feel like complete strangers. Also my grades are slipping. If I don't buckle down…….”

“I DON'T CARE! Have you forgotten that you broke the jewel? We don't have a month for you to be wasting in your time doing god knows what with god knows who. Besides….. the jewel is more important than your `SKOOL' thing anyway.”

 

Suddenly the scent of fresh tears was in the air.

Looking down at her he wished he could take it back. She had her head hung low to the ground with her hair covering her face. She wouldn't even look at him when she spoke.

 

“You don't have to remind me that I broke the jewel I already know. I'm reminded everyday when we go on a shard hunt and find a village in ruins because of a jewel wielding demon or when Naraku gets stronger. I know.”

“Kagome.”

He felt like shit now. He didn't mean to make her cry. Just the idea of her being gone an entire month made him feel queasy. The excuse of her needing to be here to find jewel shards was just a front and he knew it. Sure the shikon no tama was important and all but that was just one of the many reasons he had her stay. It was mainly for his sanity. He would go crazy without her around.

`DAMNIT! No matter what I do I always seem to make her cry. I don't mean to. It's just that what I be meaning to say never comes out right and I've never resorted to apologizing to anyone. Maybe I should try. Anything but the truth and why she's really needed here.'

 

“Kagome I'm sorry.”

Stunned beyond belief the miko lifted her head so fast you would have sworn she had whiplash.

“What did you just say?!”

“FEH! You heard me wench. I'm…..sorry. Look I'm not used to apologizing OK! I know you want to spend time with your friends and family but we can't postpone the quest for a month. Don't you understand that you have people here that need you and depend on you too?! You have responsibilities here. What am I---WE supposed to do without you?”

“Inuyasha…..”

Putting a clawed hand up he continued.

`I'm glad she didn't catch my near slip up. Don't need no more of my weaknesses exposed to the wench.'

 

 

“Look how about I give you a week. That should give you plenty of time with your friends and family and to catch up with that `SKOOL' thing of yours.”

`I guess defeating Naraku is more important than my social life. The others do need me and I can cram in a lot of schoolwork in a week. What was I thinking? There was no way he would've let me stay on the other side of the well for a whole month. Plus I would miss him like crazy. My as well make the best of it and accept the week.'

“Ok Inuyasha. A week is fine. Thank you.”

 

Going over to him she put her arms around his neck and hugged him.

He was shocked to say the least. She and his mother were the only ones who hugged him before. `Kikyou too, but after she was dead. She never really wanted any physical contact with me when she was alive. After I turned human would she allow me to touch her so that doesn't count.'

Throwing caution to the wind he embraced her in a fierce hug. Putting his nose in her hair and smelling her sweet scent he figured that there was no place in the world he would rather be than right here with her. Little did he know that the miko in his arms was thinking the same thing.

`He's hugging me back?! I can't believe it. I can count the number of times he's hugged me on one hand. No matter what the future holds……I'll cherish this moment.'

After a while he reluctantly released her and stepped back. If he stayed close for too much longer he might not have had the will power to let her go.

“Come on lets head back.”

With that he turned and led the way back to the hut their friends were resting in.

High up in the night sky a feather was flying overhead at low speed among the clouds. Kagura was in no way in a hurry to get back to Naraku.

`I wonder what Naraku is up to this time. If he manages to get a hold of Kouga's shards then he'll be even more powerful. And there is no way I can stop it….I can feel my freedom slipping right through my fingers.'

Grasping her chest where her heart should be she was reminded who really had the power. It looked like she would never be free of Naraku.

Looking down at the terrain she noticed that the wolf was still following her.

`What a fool. Doesn't he know that whatever it is that the bastard is offering surely isn't worth giving up his shards and Naraku gaining more power?! And he doesn't agree than his life is forfeit. One less fighter in the end.'

With the castle in the distance Kagura lowered her altitude.

Coming to fly by the wolf she decided to give him fair warning.

“Don't believe everything that vile creature spits out. Whatever it is he offers can't really be for your benefit. If you deny him he'll kill you. This is a scheme to get your shards easily and some type of twisted revenge against Inuyasha. He manipulates people to get exactly what he wants and he'll use you just the same.”

“Don't take me a fool witch. If he tries to double cross me I'll rip his heart out. You just better watch your back because I'll be coming after you next.” Kouga spat.

Kagura landed right before the castle grounds, dismounted and replaced the feather.

Leading the way into a secret chamber she waited for orders to enter.

“Kukuku, why Kagura I see you've returned and brought the wolf prince with you….. please do come in.”

Entering the chamber Kouga came face to face with Naraku. He had a malevolent smile on his face that he would love to rip off. Just the sight of him made his blood boil. If it wasn't for the mention of Kagome then he would have killed him by now.

“Listen asshole the only reason I haven't killed you yet is because of Kagome so you better have something good to say.”

“Well lets cut to the chase. My offer is simple. In exchange for your shards I give you the miko you lust for on a silver platter.”

“How the HELL you gonna do that?!”

“Simple I'll make Inuyasha choose between life and death. When he chooses you'll be there to pick up the pieces and save the day. It is a sure fire plan.” Came the evil response.

“How do I know I can trust you?”

“Because I want nothing but to see Inuyasha suffer and your shards of course. Once you have the girl do as you please but keep her away from him. When he sees the error of his ways it'll be too late. She'll be out of his reach. I'm sure you'll make certain of that.”

 

`Should I trust him?! If I don't he might harm her anyway. But then again this is a chance for me to get her away from the mutt and see things my way. To show her how much I truly love her.'

 

Ignoring the feeling in his gut that told him this was wrong he agreed to the plan anyway.

 

“How long from now?”

Smiling from ear to ear Naraku responded. “Three days. In the miko's village.”

Bending over he snatched the shards out of his legs and tossed them to Naraku.

“I'll be there”

With that he was gone.

Ignoring the feeling in his stomach that was telling him that this would backfire and bite him in the ass he continued on home. Even without the shards he was still pretty fast. Once he got to the mountains he would have to let his pack know that he would be gone for a couple of days. He also needed to prepare his place for Kagomes arrival.

`Three days Kagome you'll be mine.'

Sitting in the corner of the dark room Naraku couldn't help but to smile. Everything was going according to plan. He had two more shards and had a way to get that pesky miko out of his hair once and for all and making Inuyasha's life miserable in the process.

`First things first. We have to locate Kikyou. She has the tendency to go into hiding and be hard to find. Sh'lle surely play her part one way or the other. Kouga's so gullible. This is too easy.'

 

“Excellent! It is all working out perfectly. Kagura! “

“Yes master.” Came the mumbled reply.

“Gather Kanna and locate Kikyou. We have lives to destroy.”
