That morning after breakfast the group packed up and started their trek. Having no more leads on Naraku and the jewel shards they were headed back to Kaedes. Even without any leads on the evil half demons whereabouts their expedition was still a success. Having one more shard in their possession meant that that was one less shard in Naraku's possession, which was a success in their book.

The day was hot just like the days before it. The group was moving at a sluggish pace. It wasn't even midday yet and it was well over ninety degrees. The sun was beaming down on them making it that much more unbearable. If they didn't find some shade and get a rest soon the group was gonna drop one by one of heat stroke.

Inuyasha was in the lead but he wasn't going at his normal fast pace so even he the almighty hanyou was affected by the heat. Miroku was in the middle with Shippou and the normally talkative kit was silent. Slumped over the monks shoulder he couldn't summon the energy to talk his ear off like he usually did. The girls were in back not trusting their rear ends to be safe if Miroku was behind them.

Sango was sweating in her leather slayers uniform. It was times like these that she wished she was wearing something similar to what Kagome was wearing. Sure the miko's outfit was skimpy and in this day and age women in those types of short kimonos were considered harlots, but at least she was feeling a breeze. She wouldn't mind being in something more revealing if it meant that she could get cooler. Modesty be damned!

`Ughh, maybe I should change. I'm boiling in all this leather. Sure it's good for combat but in this heat it's practically unbearable. If I change someone is gonna have to keep an eye on the houshi. That damn monk just doesn't know when to quit… No matter how many times I hit him! He can't be trusted with anything. My modesty …………..or my heart.

I know something happened with the innkeepers' daughter. She was openly flirting with him and when we came back from the bathhouse he was acting totally suspicious. He better pray he didn't do anything or I don't find out. If I do the engagement is off.'

 

Sango wasn't the only one in the group suffering from the summer's heat. Miroku was sweltering hot in his robes. They were thick and heavy with sweat. He didn't have the luxury of a change of clothes so he had to endure it. Inuyasha was in his cloth of the fire rat. Although it was waterproof and gave him adequate protection it did nothing to help him stay cool in this type of weather. The only member of the inu-tachi that wasn't roasting in her clothing was Kagome. Although if you asked her she was just as hot.

`Dear God it's hot! What I wouldn't do to be in the air conditioning. Better yet take a dip in a cool spring.' Just thinking made her hot. She had her hair up in a bun to keep it off her neck. In the two and a half years that she had been traveling back and forth through time her hair had grown thicker and to her bottom. It was just too long to keep down under these conditions.

 

Coming out of her musings she heard a gurgling sound. `Is that water? Please, please let that be water! `

Stopping she called to the rest of the group. “Guys do you hear that? I think I hear water. Maybe there's a river nearby.” That got everyone's attention. “That way I think.” She said pointing to her right.

Sniffing the air Inuyasha indeed smell fresh water. Swiveling his ears in the direction that Kagome just pointed to, he heard it as well. “Yeah it sounds like a river. Let's check it out.”

Walking for about five minutes they came upon a river. It was surrounded by the greenery of the forest with flat rocks around it. Perfect for tanning and taking a nap. It was a nice spot and simply beautiful. The water was crystal clear and looked so inviting. They were all foaming at the mouth. “I propose we take a break and cool off. I for one am exhausted.”

“For once I agree with the pervert.”

 

The girls nodded their heads in agreement. It would be so nice to cool off.

“Sango I'm going to change into my swimsuit and go for a swim. I have an extra in my backpack. Would you like to use it?” Kagome asked.

“ “

Sensing her confusion she explained “A swimsuit is what people in my time wear to go swimming. For girls it usually consists of a two piece or a one piece of what my undergarments look like.”

At that statement Sango wasn't so sure. I mean she wanted to get out of the heat and into the water. And just a while ago she wished that she was wearing modern clothes like Kagome was wearing, but thinking back to what her undergarments looked like she wasn't so sure she could do it. They were awfully skimpy. She wasn't worrying about Inuyasha seeing her in it. He wouldn't give her a second glance. It was Miroku she was worrying about.

“I don't know. It sounds really revealing. Maybe I'll….”

“Don't worry Sango I have a one piece and a two piece. You can use the one piece. It really isn't that bad looking, honest.”

She was really hot and the river looked so inviting…… “Ok, I'll wear it. We're gonna have to tell Inuyasha to keep Miroku away while we change though.”

 

“GREAT! Inuyasha make sure Miroku stays right where he is and doesn't peek, that goes double for you too!”

Miroku had the nerve to look totally put out. “Hay I resent that. I am a man of the cloth. Such things are below……..”

“FEH! Whatever. Like I would peek at you!” Came the surly reply. He folded his arms and turned in the other direction with his nose in the air. “Just hurry back.”

Stomping away with Sango behind her she went to change. ` He's just so infuriating sometimes. I guess I'm just not women enough for him.'

Sometimes Kagome wondered if he was interested in women at all and then she remembered Kikyou. Yeah he liked women alright. If they were dead and smelled like graveyard soil.

“You sure have a way with the ladies my friend.”

“SHUTUP Damnit!” `Why oh why did I have to open my big mouth?! It aint like I haven't spied on her before. She just doesn't know it. ' Sometimes he just opened his mouth without thinking and got his foot caught in it. `Diarrhea of the mouth. It runs without my permission.'

 

Turning around he kept his eyes on the houshi. He looked to be meditating peacefully but looks can be deceiving. How many times had he got him like that for him to turn around to find him gone. If he got out of his sight and spied on the girls it would be hell to pay for him also. No use of eating dirt when it can be prevented.

Scowling he plopped down to the ground. One good thing would come out of this day. He would see Kagome in her underwear.

“Oh Kagome I don't know. This is way too revealing for my taste.” Came the shy reply.

She had on a modest black one piece that she kept trying to tug down while Kagome's suit was a little more daring. It was a red two piece with a bikini bottom that was held up by two bows on the side.

“Come on Sango. Don't you want to cool down? Besides mine shows off way more than yours does. You have a nice body. Why not show it off?!” Sango didn't look convinced.

“You think so?”

“Yes, now come on. I'm hot. Let's make the most of our good fortune and cool off. I'm sure the boys are also starting to get impatient.” Not waiting to see if she would follow Kagome headed back to the river.

Upon arrival she spotted Inuyasha sulking and Miroku seemed to be meditating.

“We're back. Last one ins a rotten egg!” With that she ran full speed toward the river, diving in head first. Sango was right behind her.

“Kagome wait for me.” Whined the kit. Scampering right behind the two females.

 

“WOW!” Both boys said in unisen. They were left looking like gaping fish.

`Damn.' Was all Inuyasha could think. He only had eyes for Kagome. He always knew that she had a body but to see it presented as it was………..damn.

Taking a moment to gather himself he looked at the houshi. He was practically drooling.

<THUMP>

“Oww! What was that for?” Miroku asked while rubbing his now sore head.

Baring his teeth and growling he threatened “Keep your eyes and hands to yourself if you wanna keep them monk.”

Eyes twinkling with mischief he tested his luck with the volatile hanyou. “Oh I get it. You want me to stay away from lady Kagome. Fair enough. She's all yours.”

More growling was his answer. Not taking the hint to shut his mouth he went a little further “ They do look lovely running and bouncing all about, wet glistening skin, water running down their bodies to the cracks of their………”

<THUMP>

“PERVERT!”

Taking one last moment to look at the unconscious monk Inuyasha got up and went down to the river to join the girls. He really needed to cool down.

The next two days went off without much incident. The temperature dropped some too and for that they were grateful. At dusk on their third day of travel they could see Kaede's village in the distance. Finally they were back.

` Finally. I can't wait to get home and see my friends and family. It seems like it's been forever when it's only been about two weeks. Some time to myself will do me some good. A little time away from Inuyasha will be good also. What's that saying? Distance makes the heart grow fonder. I hope their right. Maybe some time apart will get Inuyasha to finally see what's right in front of him….ME. I love him so much but if something doesn't change soon, I'll have to leave like I initially planned. This time….for good.'

 

Everyone was in such deep thought that no one sensed him. Kagome didn't even sense the sacred jewel until it was right upon them. No one saw it coming. No one had time to react or ready themselves.

 

“AHHHH!” Faster than anyone could blink Naraku appeared in all his glory and wrapped a tentacle around Kagome's neck and suspended her in mid air.

Time stood still.

 

Whipping out the Tessaiga in a blinding light Inuyasha was the first to react. In battle stance he shouted. “NARAKU! LET. HER. GO. NOW!”

 

“Kukuku, Why Inuyasha you really should take better care of your women. You never know who are what may find them.” Retracting another tentacle from behind him revealed a similarly bound woman in priestess clothing.

`KIKYOU!'

Shocked gasps echoed in the clearing. No way was this happening. He not only had Kagome but Kikyou as well.

Inuyasha was seeing red. Even with Tessaiga in hand he still threatened to transform.

“I'LL SAY IT AGAIN. LET THEM GO!” The half demon bellowed.

“Why Inuyasha you are in no position to make demands. I have not one but two women of equal value to you lives in my hands.”

 

“You BASTARD let them go!”

 

“Temper, temper you should really mind your manners. I could crush them before you take a step so watch your mouth.” Came the malevolent voice.

 

That gave Inuyasha pause. He couldn't live with himself if anything happened to either one of them.

Looking up he noticed Kagome was crying and trying to catch a breathe. Struggling with the tentacles that held her. Kikyou was hanging lifelessy, looking as if she was unconscious. One couldn't tell though. Her hair was covering her face.

“Now that I have you attention I would like to give you your options.”

 

`Damnit he was tired of Naraku's mind games. What's his angle?!' “Spit it out already! What the hell do you want?!”

 

Grinning with great pleasure the evil being gave him his ultimatum. “Simple, I want you to suffer. I give you the option of saving one of them from certain death. Choose which girl means more to you. You can only save one of them. So which will it be?”

“ “

 

Everyone was frozen in place. Surly he couldn't be that evil. Everyone of his friends prayed that he picked Kagome. Surly he would. She was alive and Kikyou was dead. But things were never that simple were Kikyou was involved.

`DAMNIT! How the hell do I choose?! I care for them both. Kagome's alive and has family at home….. But I owe Kikyou.'

 

“If you don't choose I kill them both?”

 

“DAMNIT!”

Naraku was enjoying this emincely.

 

“Ah Ah AH wrong answer. So what will it be?! Your past or your future?”
