Chapter 1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fourteen-year-old, no longer a child, but a young woman, sat on the edge of her bed waiting for Jaken to call her for breakfast. But she was very hungry and could not wait any longer. Jumping to her feet, she tied her obi tight and ran out of the bedroom and down the long, golden staircase that rested in the center of the castle.
Rin jumped the very last few stairs, almost slipping to the ground. But she regained her balance and kept running toward the dining hall where her Lord Sesshomaru was already sat down waiting for his own breakfast to arrive. Rin stopped before the dining hall doors. She ran her small fingers through her mid-back length jet black hair. It was silky and smooth, just the way she wanted it to be. She also fixed her yukata as well. It was red and blue with butterfly patterns. This was also the yukata she had received from Sesshomaru for her fourteenth birthday which happened not too long ago. Rin wanted to always look the best for her Lord. She one day hoped her Lord would take her as his mate. It was a day that Rin would always wait for. That is, if he would take her. She had fell madly in love with him when she was only at the tender age of 11 years old.
Rin was taking an evening stroll in the gardens that she always tended to since her first day at the castle. It was a job she had taken a liking to. While strolling, she saw outside what looked like an angel. She crept a little closer to take a closer peek. Instead, it was not an angel. It was lord Sesshomaru standing in all his glory. The rough wind was blowing his hair around his face and shoulders. The sleeves of his haori were gently gliding across the air. And when the wind blew the hakamas just right, she could tell of a faint outline of muscular limbs. His amber eyes were sparkling in the darkest of nights and howled at the moon unexpectedly. He was beautiful and she certainly thought so. She gasped when he bent down on one knee, face peeled to the full moon above. Sesshomaru heard the gasp and turned to Rin, who was staring at him in awe. He just smiled at her, fangs slightly showing. At that moment was the time when Rin knew she was in love with her lord. Always. And forever.
Rin could not help but feel warm at those tender thoughts and thus began her arousal. A scuttling of feet were heard behind Rin and she turned her head around, her black hair whipping into her face.
"Oh!" She gasped, her face filled with a fiery blush. Blowing her hair away, she brushed it back down her back with her fingers once again.
Jaken, who happened to be carrying a small breakfast tray, stopped in his path, staring up at Rin with a small look of confusion in his eyes.
"What do you think you are doing down here, human? I thought you were to wait until I fetched you for your breakfast?" He scuttled around Rin to the dining hall doors.
"Well, Master Jaken, it seems my stomach is in charge this morning. Please, Master Jaken, may I eat here with Lord Sesshomaru...again?"
Jaken closed his eyes and lowered his head, his small hat covering his closed eyes. With a grunt, he pushed it back up. "Rin, you may eat with our Lord Sesshomaru, but do not cry to me if he pushes you out." He reached up, turning the small handle and opening the door. Rin held the door open for Jaken and walked in.
Rin snorted. 'Like he ever would.'
Sesshomaru, sitting in one of his throne chairs and the end of the long breakfast table, waited for his servant to come with his morning meal. While he was waiting, he noted that another presence was coming toward the dining hall. It was Rin. He could tell by the flowery scent she always had of sakura blossoms and wild orchids. It was a scent that always made him feel happy and warm inside his icy heart. Breathing in her scent more, he noticed a bit of a change in the smell. It was smelling like honey somewhat but where could that delicious smell be coming from. Then, he was snapped out of his reverie by hearing Jaken and Rin exchanging words on the other side. The dining hall doors opened and Jaken waddled in with Rin, who he heard snort, not too far behind.
"Rin..." He bowed his head.
Rin smiled brightly. "My Lord Sesshomaru..."
Sesshomaru smiled to himself. He loved it when she called him that.
"Rin."
"Yes?" She asked, eyebrows raised.
The lord sighed. How was he going to tell her that he'll be away for an entire week traveling without her following behind as she always did? "Rin, I am going to be leaving this afternoon. For a whole week."
Rin smiled. She loved it when she traveled with Sesshomaru. It just made her so happy. All the time, she would stop and pick flowers whenever possible and make a wreath of them for her Lord. He accepted them with pleasure but never wore them. He would always set it down beside him, but keep it from being trampled upon.
"Wow! A whole week? Where are we traveling to, Lord Sesshomaru?"
He cleared his throat. "Rin, I don't know how to say this, but it will only be me and Jaken doing the traveling this time." Her smile turned into a frown. "We are going to a meeting for the all the Lords and I must take my leave from this castle immediately. Without you."
She could not say a word. What could she say? Could she beg? She would beg for her Lord to take her, but she knew his word was always final. "Rin?"
A well of tears formed under her eyes and those hot tears ran like rain down both sides of her cheeks. She wiped them away with her bare arm and tried to falsely smile. "I am fine, my Lord. If you do not mind, I will take my leave." He nodded knowing she wanted to cry upstairs in her room. At least until after he left, then she would become, hopefully, the proud and happy little girl he adopted into his life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rin ran from the room not at all pleased with her Lord's choice of words. It was the first time in a long time that he would leave her alone. There was only some times when Sesshomaru had to take his leave when she was younger while they were traveling to either battle or get food. Perhaps for just time to himself. But when she turned nine years old, they had returned to his castle where she had made it a permanent home for herself and whenever Sesshomaru traveled, Rin came along for the ride just like when she was a little girl. This was the first time she ever felt so alone. That she felt empty inside. Did her lord not want her anymore? Did he tire of her so fast? Was he just using her to keep some type of an image? Possibly not the last one, but not wanting her or tiring of her was not uncommon. If Jaken did not want her around, why would Lord Sesshomaru?

Rin raced up the golden stairs and down the hallway, pushing her door open and closing it. Running to her canopy bed, she plopped down face first and cried out all her tears. Her Lord Sesshomaru was leaving and she did not want him to go. Especially without her. It would be a nightmare not to be by her Lord's side. Since she was resurrected by his hand by Tenseiga, she would follow him around like a lost little puppy. She wanted to be by his side. She wanted to walk behind him while riding on Ah-Un. And, so happily to admit, they were her better times in her life. Next to the ones about her mother and father and brother. At the very moment, sleep suddenly found its way into her eyes and they drooped shut, the tears still flowing and staining the silk pillow where she always laid her head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was near the afternoon and Sesshomaru had decided to leave earlier than subjected. He thought it would make it easier on Rin and it did not. But she did want her Sesshomaru to go without her. She felt naked without him by her side. She felt like her soul had been pushed from her body. Her heart jumping out of her chest. Why did he do this? Why go without the one girl who had traveled with him most of her life? Your own adopted little girl?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun rose high over the sunset in the pinkish-bluish sky two days later. The calm cawing of nearby birds awakened Rin from an unknown newfound slumber. She had an easy night's sleep which was strange to her since the day before, she was still upset by the fact of Sesshomaru leaving without her. Yawning, she pushed the covers away from her body and set her bare feet on the cold floor. She gasped and pulled her feet back into the bed. It was cold! Very cold! A few seconds later, there was a knock on Rin's door. Snapping her head to the sound, she smiled when it opened.
"Hey, Kiano!"
Kiano, Rin's own bodyguard, smiled over at Rin. He was about as tall as Sesshomaru, broad-shouldered, silver and red hair that was waistlength tied back with a white tie and silver eyes. He also bore claws and fangs as well. Upon his body he wore a red haori with blue hakamas and a red and green sash. He was a special breed of inuyoukai that was very rare. And Rin had to admit, he was very handsome. Handsome almost as her Lord Sesshomaru.
"Hey, Rin. How're you feeling today?" He asked while walking over to her and sitting on the bed. It dipped slightly and Rin almost fell to the floor. She caught herself in time with her hand wrapped around one of the posters of the bed. "So?"
Rin sighed. "I'm feeling...better. I guess. It's hard not to be near him, but I can feel him and that just makes me all warm and tingly inside." She wrapped her arms around herself and smiled brightly.
Kiano moved a hand to her face and caressed her cheek with the back of his clawed fingers. "I'm glad you're feeling better, Rin. No more weeping for our Lord, all right?" She nodded and a new warmth began to spread throughout her being. "Lord Sesshomaru will be back in a few days' time. Do not worry. He will come back for his Rin."
"Thanks, Kiano." She covered his big hand with her small one and began to massage a little with her thumb.
Kiano cleared his throat. "So, uh, what shall we do today? Your Lord Sesshomaru had left you in my care which means I have to watch you 24/7 until he gets home."
"You don't have to. You've already been watching me like a hawk for two days already, Kiano." She glanced up at his face. It was handsome. Just like her Lord Sesshomaru. Kiano chuckled somewhat nervously and pulled his hand away from Rin's cheek.
"Um, perhaps we could take a short stroll in the garden today."
Rin looked out her balcony doors. She saw the sun was high and shining and a small breeze was pushing the waiting flowers and trees. How they were so beautiful when they did that. Beautiful as her Lord Sesshomaru. Rin nodded. "I would like that, Kiano. We will do it today after I settle for a bath and my morning meal."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rin had finished her bathing. She had settled on wearing a green yukata. It was very short, but it covered her most private of parts. Rin had slipped her feet into her sandals and made her way to the breakfast hall to enjoy a breakfast with plenty of fruit and meat.
The young girl sat down at the table, picking at the fish served before her with her chopsticks. She had eaten half of it, but was beginning to get full. But she did not want the fish to go to waste. Instead, she threw it out the window so the birds could have their own morning feast.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kiano was standing next to the door of the dining hall waiting for Rin to appear. He did not want to go in and disturb her meal. Instead he settled for standing outside of the door. Several thoughts were racing through his head at the moment. He liked Rin. He really did. But he was her bodyguard. A bodyguard was not supposed to have feelings for the person he was supposed to be protecting. Especially not Sesshomaru's little charge, Rin. But she was so pure and innocent and happy and caring and loving. Qualities that Kiano admired so much in the little girl. He wondered if she ever felt anything for him. If she would ever feel anything for him?

The bodyguard was slipped out of his thoughts after hearing Rin's sweet voice right next to him. He gazed down to see her smiling face and pulled her into a tight embrace. She began to struggle against him.
"Uh, Kiano...I can't...breathe!" She managed to slip out. Kiano heard her and gasped.
Letting her go, he apologized. "I am so sorry, Rin. I guess I was just caught up in some thoughts and wasn't realizing what I was doing. I am sorry."
"It's all right, Kiano. I understand." She said while laughing. "I'm sure that it is a misunderstanding. I accept your apology. Now," she held out her hand, "can we please take our stroll in the garden?"
Kiano nodded his head. "Of course we may. After you, my dear." He grabbed her hand and she began to pull him along.
