It was another beautiful day in the feudal era of Japan. The birds were singing, the weather was perfect and the only odd sound in the forest was the loud sits followed by equally loud crashes.

The gang had decided that since Naraku had once again gone into hiding there was no since going on another wild goose chase, so they were currently having a picnic not too far from the Bone eaters well.

“Honestly Inuyasha! I don't know why I even bother bringing you anything other than RAMEN! You're so ungrateful and you insult my cooking! That's it I don't care about your health anymore, if all you want to eat is those darn noodles than so be it!” Kagome yelled her voice echoing off the trees sending a shiver down everyone's bodies.

Inuyasha, currently in a crater the size of swimming pool only grumbled as he tried lifting his head up to try and spit out the dirt currently in his mouth.

“What an idiot.” Shippo said while digging into the bag of treats that Kagome had brought for him. A small whimpering from the nearby shrub caught his attention and he placed his candy back and went to inspect.

Not to far from the group a white ball of fuzz was lying in a thorny bush and was shifting slowly. Alarmed that something might be hurt Shippo quickly began trying to remove the creature ignoring the strong smell of blood.

“Kagome! Hurry I need your medicine herbs!” he shouted back towards the group. After a bit of struggle he was able to remove it and he held it close to his chest. “It's okay little guy we got you.” He consoled the injured animal, the creature either out of understandment or fear quit resisting and allowed himself to be held and twitched something on top of his head making it tickle Shippo's chin.

Smiling Shippo pulled the creature away from him and noticed it had two cute doggy ears just like Inuyasha. It was a puppy!

His happy thoughts were interrupted by Kagome taking the injured pup and began cleaning the wounds that seemed to cover the body. Miroku quickly jumped into prayer and Sango knelt near Kagome ready to aid in any way.

“You can save him right Kagome?” The tearful fox asked scared of her answer, but Kagome didn't respond and his heart clenched.

A big shadow loomed behind him and he turned around to see an arms crossed pissed off hanyou spitting out dirt. “Don't even bother, it's a runt and the smell of death is everywhere.”

“Inuyasha SIT! How dare you be so cold hearted?” Kagome shouted never stopping her ministrations on the pup.

Lifting his head up as much as the rosary necklace allowed he bellowed back, “I ain't the cold hearted one, his mother is! She's the one that cast him out of the pack just because he wasn't strong!”

Kagome's eyes glistened with tears cradling the pup in one of her spare blankets. “How awful,” she half whispered, “I would never do that to my child.”

“Yeah well it ain't a human this is how animals work, it's all about survival.” The golden eyed hanyou now sat in his crater arms still crossed looking even more annoyed but not making contact with Kagome.

Kagome held the pup out to Shippo, “Would you like to hold him? I know it was you that found him, maybe you could comfort it until it passes.”

Shippo instantaneously began balling, “You mean he won't live? No Kagome you have to save him! It wasn't fair.”

The girl from the future smiled despite the tears in her eyes, “Shippo I'm sorry, I can't save him he's already lost a lot of blood, I think that he was at least lucky to have found someone like you that cared so much for him and tried to save him.”

Shippo took the tiny pup and cradled him to his body as he began walking deeper into the forest. “I'm so sorry I didn't find you earlier, I would have loved to have you as a friend. You and I could have played lots of tricks on that mean Inuyasha” The young fox rested against a tree telling him many stories of his youth trying to make the pup's last minutes at least a bit humorous.

Throughout the entire story telling the blue eyed white puppy never broke contact and seemed to understand the tales. And slowly its eyes began drifting shut until they didn't open again. Shippo held back a sob, squeezing the pup as close to his body as possible.

And this was how Inuyasha found him.

“Stop crying kid, it won't bring him back.” Inuyasha attempted to get a rise out of the kit but found he didn't stop crying. “Oi! I said cut it out, you didn't even know him!”

“Stupid Yasha, just because I didn't know him doesn't mean I didn't care!” His voice full of anger and sadness made Inuyasha a bit taken back. After no other words spoken he began to dig a hole in front of the tree next to Shippo. “What are you doing?” he asked, curiosity getting the better of him.

“Well where else are you gonna bury him?”

Shippo let a small smile set on his lips and waited patiently for Inuyasha to continue digging; and shortly after the pup was buried Inuyasha began to walk away towards camp. “Wait Inuyasha you didn't give him a name.”

Inuyasha turned back giving the kitsune a nod, “You pick it out,” he said entering the forest. Shippo turned back towards the small grave before using his small finger to write `Lucky' in the dirt.

Saying a small prayer the kitsune bounced into the forest after Inuyasha.

Later that night, he found that sleep was not so easy to attain, feeling that he would only keep Kagome up he let himself out of her sleeping bag and climbed up in the tree with Inuyasha.

“Oi runt! What are you doing?” he hissed, as Shippo climbed into his lap before settling into his chest. The hanyou quickly recognized the sent of salt in the air and reluctantly tapped the kit's back in a way to console him.

“It wasn't fair Inuyasha; he didn't even get to live a kid's life. And that's probably what would have happened to me if you guys hadn't found me……thank you Inuyasha for not abandoning me.”

“What are you babbling about now, that would not have happened to you because you're not weak, you could have taken care of yourself, and don't worry about the pup, he's in a better place.”

The young kitsune looked up at his surrogate father, “Really Inuyasha you mean it? How'dya know?”

The hanyou huffed, “Well, he was a dog right? Well all dogs when they die become lights in the sky, and then they get to watch over their friends and family, and no one treats them bad just because their different.”

Shippo swallowed the ball of emotion in his throat, he couldn't cry anymore, not after what Inuyasha had said; Inuyasha wouldn't lie to him about this.

“Thank you Inuyasha,” he said tightening his hold on the haori and giving into to much deserved sleep.

Below them Kagome smiled up to the pair in the tree, “Thank you Inuyasha,” before turning into to sleep herself.
