Chapter 1: Blood Is Thicker Then Video Games
"Ha, take that you spiky haired bastard!"
Miroku sighed as Inuyasha repeatedly pounded on the buttons on his PS2.
"I came in here for a reason Inuyasha. I didn't come to see you cuss at the TV."
The man sitting next to Miroku on the couch ignored him and continued to stare at the screen. He paused for a second.
"Yuna is the only one alive. Do you think I should cast life on someone?"
"I don't play RPGs. I'm surprised you play them anyway, but I came in here to tell you of his movements."
Inuyasha froze and glared at Miroku. He had kind eyes and short hair tied back in a short ponytail. It was a little known fact that Miroku was older then Inuyasha himself.
"Stop glaring at me, you know who I'm talking about."
"I don't want to talk about him. I haven't had any free time since Sesshomaru left to play this game and it's been driving me crazy. You know how additive RPGs are."
"It doesn't help that you suck. The sequel to FinalFantasy10 came out a year ago."
Inuyasha paused again and glared at Miroku.
"Why did you come in here again?"
"Oh yeah, I came to tell you that you know who is planning another raid."
Inuyasha instantly dropped his controller and turn to face Miroku completely. He locked eyes with Miroku and held them. His waist long white hair, golden eyes and upright, fuzzy dog ears made him look rather silly sometimes. But now he looked focused and had a rare look of loathing in his eyes. He always did when `he' was spoken of.
"-and how do you know that?"
"Same way as always, it pays having a mole. And you wanted to kill her."
"She smelt just like him. But you wouldn't know that would you?"
"Why do you always make fun of me because I'm not a full-blood? I have the strength, I have the vision. Why isn't that enough for you?" Miroku sighed shaking his head
Inuyasha's glare softened somewhat. He sighed and turned away from Miroku.
"Don't get whiny. I know it's not your fault."
Miroku narrowed his eyes at Inuyasha and picked up the controller that Inuyasha had put down. Before Inuyasha could snatch it back Miroku had made the current player attack the blue spiky hair person on the TV.
"Why the hell did you do that!? She the only person alive, it only took off 12 of his Hp. Now he's going to use Double Cast and KO her!"
Miroku watched with contentment as the spiky haired person on the TV screen cast a Blizzra spell on the character Inuyasha had called Yuna.
He KO'ed her and the words `Game Over' showed up on the screen along with Yuna's body laying on the ground.
Inuyasha stared at the screen in shock before turning to Miroku angrily.
"You bastard!"
"Oh get over it. Even if you deny it, you are the leader of this base and you have a raid to stop. The sun is going down so I'd hurry if I were you."
Inuyasha threw the controller at the TV and got to his feet. He ignored Miroku's reference to him be leader and walked toward out of the room, Miroku right behind him.
Inuyasha sighed and made his way toward the main room of the base. They were lucky to have found this place. It seemed perfect for the steadily growing clan. It was an old abandoned army base near Mount. Fuji. His father had found it a long time ago and all the humans in the area seemed to have forgotten it.
Inuyasha began walking up a stairway when he was suddenly pressed up against the wall by a group of children playing a game of tag.
"Hey don't run on the stairs! I don't want to have to bury your bodies after you've tripped and broken your neck!" he yelled after them as they disappeared down the hallway.
"Yeah whatever Inu-chan!" one called back.
Miroku sighed and walked up past Inuyasha.
"When will you ever learn? They listen to no one but Sango."
"I don't see why they would listen to a human instead of me."
"She'll stop feeding them if they don't."
Inuyasha shrugged and continued walking up the stairs. He walked into the room at the top of the landing and sighed loudly quickly getting everyone present's attention.
"What's this about a raid?" he asked walking up to one man in particular. The room was often very loud and full of people watching TV and talking to one another. Now the only people in the room were the older members of the clan, the ones that could fight and protected everybody.
The man that Inuyasha had walked up to looked up at him gravely.
"His numbers are getting low. He plans on attacking a whole neighborhood."
"You know that doesn't make any sense Minko. If a bunch of people all in the same neighborhood suddenly went missing during the night the police would get suspicious." Inuyasha said calmly leaning casually against the wall.
"I didn't say he would attack everybody in the neighborhood. He's only after one person." Minko said drumming his fingers on the side of his arm.
Minko was one of the only people still alive that could tell Inuyasha what and what not to do. His eyes were a deep blood red, a unique color of all the people who lived here. He had black shoulder length hair which grew the same color of his eyes at the ends. Right now he looked irritated and his red eyes flashed angrily. He almost looked human but his slightly pointed ears really gave him away.
Inuyasha frowned at Minko.
"His numbers are low so he wants one more newborn that's weak and can hardly fight on its own?" Inuyasha asked dryly
Minko pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.
"I didn't say it makes sense…"
"You made me stop playing for this?" He asked Miroku angrily.
"Inuyasha, you suck anyway. I was doing you a flavor, besides this is more important."
"He needs more minions. That last attack we made with Kouga's clan really made a dent in his numbers." Minko said suddenly stopping the argument before it could begin.
"So how does this one person help him get more minions?" a woman from the other side of the room asked softly
"Our mole didn't know. All she told us was that he plans on attacking the neighborhood that the person lives in tonight. All I know is that whoever it is lives in a shrine."
Everyone in the room looked up at Minko in surprise including Inuyasha.
"A shrine, why would he need someone who lived in a shrine?" Miroku asked frowning thoughtfully at Minko.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Minko said calmly. He looked up at Inuyasha expectantly. "So…what now? You going to look into it?"
"He's planning something. I won't let him get the jump on us now. Of course we'll look into it." Inuyasha said frowning down at Minko. "Does Kouga know anything about this?"
"No, he doesn't trust our mole. You can imagine why…"
"Good, this is our lead. No need to have that fucking wolf complicating things."
Minko sighed and calmly turned to face the rest of the people assembled in the room.
"You heard that, we'll take a team with us and the rest of you stay here and protect the base. You know the drill. Do not let anyone enter before sunrise. I've informed all the people stationed in the city to return at once. As soon as we leave no one gets in and one comes out."
"Kagome are you sure you'll be fine all by yourself?"
Kagome rolled her eyes and all but pushed her mother out the door.
"Yes I'll be fine. You should go now or you and grandpa will be late."
"She's right, she'll be fine. Let's go!" The old man said irritably from where he stood next to the car.
"Yeah mama, I don't want to be late for the party." said the young boy standing next to the old man.
"See mama, grandpa is going to miss his train and Souta's going to be late for his friend's slumber party. You wouldn't want them to be mad at you would you?"
Mrs. Higurashi sighed and looked between her daughter and her son and father standing by the car.
"I really don't want to leave you by yourself."
"It's only for the weekend."
Mrs. Higurashi sighed and got into the car.
"Do you have my cell phone number?"
"I've had it memorized for the past four years."
"Do you have the number to the hotel?"
"You wrote it down five times for me."
"Do you have Nazumi-san's phone number just in case you need it get a hold of Souta?"
"It's on the fridge."
"Do you know how to dial 9-1-1?"
Kagome stared blankly at her mother for a second and Mrs. Higurashi sighed.
"I was just making sure…"
"Mama!"
"Daughter!"
"Okay, okay…see you in a few days Kagome."
Kagome sighed as she watched her family drive off. What did her mother expect her to do, make a bomb and destroy the shrine?
Kagome shivered, even though it wasn't cold in least bit. She suddenly felt like she was being watched. She looked around quickly before ducking back into the house.
"So which one do you think he wants, the old man, or the kid?" Inuyasha asked flatly from where sitting in the shadows near the shrine Kagome had just entered.
Minko's eyebrow twitched in irritation and he turned to Inuyasha sharply.
"For the love of God…shut…up…"
Inuyasha snorted but fell silent.
"He wants the girl." Minko said crossing his arms thoughtfully
"No…I think we have the wrong address."
"Didn't I tell you to shut up?"
"I'm sorry I wasn't listening, what did you say?"
"He wants the girl." Minko repeated turning back to the house
"Okay…but why does he want her." Inuyasha asked scratching his cheek absentmindedly. "Of course this might all be a trick, and our base could be under attack right now while we're standing here watching a house with a teenage girl inside it for no reason."
"Why do you have to be so pessimistic about everything?"
"Have you ever heard of the catapult theory?"
"No…I don't really care either."
"Okay your loss."
Inuyasha and Minko returned their eyes to the shrine and watched in silence. Minutes ticked by and Inuyasha's mind began to wander a little.
He was glad Sesshomaru had left, because the two of them had never gotten along very well. Even when their father had been alive the two of them had always had a strong sibling rivalry. When he had just decided to leave the position of leader had been dumped into his lap. That wasn't something he had been happy about. He was not a leader. He had never wanted to be. He just didn't want the responsibility. He didn't want to be thought of as leader. He didn't want to be called sir and he quickly became angry or simply ignored it when it happened. The other clans had thought their clan leaderless and they probably still did but that didn't bother Inuyasha, nor did it bother the rest of the clan. People often thought that members of the Inu-clan were stupid or arrogant…truth is that they just didn't give a damn.
Inuyasha was brought out of his own little world by a loud scream. Inuyasha elbowed a sleeping Minko in the ribs before jumping forward and rushing to the broken down door. He didn't run in yet and neither did Minko.
They stopped just at the entrance, listened to the struggle now going on inside.
Inuyasha turned to Minko.
"I guess you were right." He whispered.
He winced when he heard a particularly loud crash inside the house.
"Where are the others?" he asked inching toward the door.
"They fell back, just incase we need help later."
Inuyasha nodded and took a deep breath before suddenly jumping into the room, Minko staying back to watch.
The girl was sprawled out on the couch struggling weakly against a figure bending over her. The others in the room looked around in shock at Inuyasha and the figure looked up, the girl's blood dripping from his mouth.
Inuyasha turned his nose up.
"Eww…"
Before Inuyasha could blink he had been attacked by the four dark figures around the room, while the man standing over the girl stayed put. Inuyasha blinked in surprise as he easily stepped out of the way of each blind swing by the men.
"You're pretty slow. I'm guessing you're newlings." Inuyasha looked back at Minko. "Hey can I have some help? At least keep that guy from sucking the girl dry."
Minko sighed and picked up a piece of wood from the ruined door. He aimed to point at the back of the figure sucking up the girl and flicked his wrist, throwing the piece of wood and impaling the man.
The newlings looked up obviously afraid now that the oldest of them had been taken out. Two of them had been decapitated before they could even turn back to Inuyasha and Minko easily took out the other two.
Inuyasha sighed and shook his hand vigorously trying to rid it of blood.
"Eww…nasty. It's under my fingernails and everything."
Minko frowned at Inuyasha as he walked forward and looked down at the girl laying on the couch.
"She's not dead. It looks like they tried to turn her."
"Well, we stopped them so let's go home."
Minko looked up at Inuyasha in surprise.
"You want to just leave her? She'll die…"
Inuyasha looked a little uncomfortable but frowned at Minko anyway.
"It has nothing to do with us. We stopped his plans. He can't use her if she's dead."
Minko stared blankly at Inuyasha before looking back at the girl. Her face had become pale from blood loss and she was covered in a thin sheen of sweat.
"I know you're not that cruel Inuyasha."
"What that hell do you expect me to do?"
"This is the perfect chance for you to become a sire. You're very over due to become one."
"No thank you. I'm not interested in becoming anyone's sire."
"So you're going to let an innocent girl die?"
"I'm not going to let her do anything. I was too late to stop them from biting her. What's happened has happened."
"I can't sire her Inuyasha. Only you can, so if you don't you'll be letting her die."
Inuyasha really looked torn for a moment. Minko knew he was hesitant because he was scared. Becoming a sire was a big responsibility and Minko knew that Inuyasha hated that. It was the reason he refused to be known as the leader of their clan.
"She's going fast Inuyasha. Hurry up."
Inuyasha sighed and walked forward.
"Go outside and tell the others what happened. I'll be out in a minute."
Minko got to his feet and walked out of the house. He heard Inuyasha sigh again before he made a pained noise.
Inuyasha tore the skin around his wrist and allowed blood to drip freely down his arm. He winced slightly before holding it in front of the girl's mouth. As soon as the blood touched her lips the bite mark on her neck stopped bleeding and closed up.
"Okay you stupid girl. I saved your life, now what?"
Of course she didn't answer. She would be out for a while. She had lost a lot of her own blood and even as Inuyasha sat next to her his blood was running through her veins and regenerating itself. That's what made them so hard to kill. They would never run out of blood and now his blood was inside this girl. She was no longer human she would become like him. She would be part of his clan and he would have to be responsible for her.
"Oh…dear…what the hell did I get myself into?"
