Summary: The new moon causes Inuyasha to become human for one night, but what about the full moon? On the anniversary of Izayoi's death, Inuyasha discovers a strange secret about himself, one that will keep the others on constant watch, not only for their safety, but his as well.
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha. If only I did, imagine what I could accomplish.
“Now, listen well, Inuyasha, for what I say today, I will never repeat again. Once, a powerful dog demon name Inutaisho fell in love with a beautiful human woman named Izayoi. Together, the two bore a child, a hanyou named Inuyasha. That is the story you know. However, there is much more to the tale then you could ever imagine.”
“Lady Izayoi was a beauty to be sure, but she was also a bit more than that. Izayoi was a miko, or more so, a sorceress. Her powers were strong and always growing.
However, there were strict laws when it came to loving demons, especially for a sorceress. Izayoi had to swear on her own grave that she would never use her powers once the two had produced a child. It was difficult to keep this promise, what with raising a constantly tortured hanyou boy. There were many times she could have used her power to help her son, to stop those who hurt him so, but sadly, she knew the consequences were too dire to even try.
This was the way it remained until one fateful day; Izayoi could stand it no longer. A pack of panther demons had come after her son and she had no way to protect him. She forced him inside and released her powers on the pack. Unfortunately, attacking the demons broke the sacred vow she made. With every bit of power she used, her own life force began to wither away. The attack was so strong, so powerful that she used all of her soul. In her last moments on earth, she stored her remaining power within her son, allowing it only to awaken when the time was right. I believe, Inuyasha, that now it that time.”
Inuyasha stared at the old man, amazed at what he had been told. His mother was a sorceress and he had been given her power? That explained the bright blue light he saw before her death, but what about the changes? What significance could they possibly hold? “What about the changes?”
“I'm getting there, Inuyasha, be patient! The changes are of great importance. Not only does this transformation mark the arrival of your powers, but also, it is a gift from your mother. With your power, you are now able to cloak your hanyou features. Of course, to control the switch, you'll have to learn how to use your power. For this, you must find Yori. She is an ancient, yet wise sorceress. If I understand correctly, it was she who trained your mother once her powers began to develop. I am sure she will find you just as great a challenge.”
“Shall I accompany you on your great journey, Master Inuyasha?” Myoga asked.
“No, Myoga, we'll be fine. Besides, there could be danger and we all know how you are when it comes to danger.”
Myoga sighed and nodded. “Alright then, Master. I wish you well on your journey.”
“We'll be fine. And thanks for the help, Totosai. You may be a withered old prune, but you're still pretty helpful on occasion.” That said, Inuyasha left quickly with Kagome in toe, making certain to be far away once Totosai realized he'd been insulted.
“Why, you…! Get back here, you mangy mutt!”
Inuyasha had decided that the best way to find Yori would be to ask Kaede. Surely an elder miko such as she would have to have heard of a great sorceress like Yori. Though neither had said a word since they left Totosai, Inuyasha could sense Kagome had something to say. Since she wouldn't speak of her own accord, Inuyasha decided to nudge her in the right direction. “Hey, Kagome?”
“Yeah, Inuyasha?”
“You've been awfully quiet since we left. If you want to say anything, feel free.”
Silence returned for only a moment, then she said, “It's just, well…. I kind of… I miss your ears.”
Inuyasha almost fell off of the branch he was perched on. “My ears? I discover my mother was a powerful sorceress, that I have her power, and all you have to say is that you miss my ears?”
Kagome blushed and nodded. Inuyasha just shook his head and continued leaping. “You know, Kagome, this isn't permanent. Once I can control my power, I'll have my ears back, so don't worry so much.”
Later, Inuyasha and Kagome finally arrived outside Kaede's hut. Inuyasha opened the door, expecting to find Kaede sitting by the fire. Instead, there sat a woman in emerald robes. Her long ebony hair had streaks of gray and was pulled into a bun. The woman, though she appeared young, had obviously lived a very long, full life. Without even asking, Inuyasha knew her name. “Yori, the ancient sorceress.”
“Nice to see you, son of Izayoi. I have been waiting a long time to meet one with such power as yours. Myoga contacted me shortly after he saw you last. He informed me that your powers had awakened. I look forward to teaching you, just as I did Izayoi. My only question is this, are you prepared to learn?”
Inuyasha was silent, unsure of how to respond. He knew he had to control his powers, but what kind of tasks would he have to complete. He remembered how hard it was to first wield the Tetsuiga and control its power. Would using his magic be just as difficult or perhaps worse? Looking at Kagome, he remembered what she had said about his ears. He had to learn to control this power, not let it control him.
“Yes, Mistress Yuri, I am ready to learn.”
