Chapter 9 ~ Voices in the Ether
“I told you…I am a cat hanyou.”
Kagome shook her head, raven hair flying. “No…you seem so familiar. Why? Where did you come from?”
Autumn took a deep breath. “I came in here through a well. Naraku kidnapped me and turned me into a hanyou by something he calls the shikon serum.”
“Then you're…Autumn!” she gave her friend a hug, making Autumn scream in pain.
“Oops, I'm really sorry.” Kagome's face darkened with concern. “You've got some hemorrhaging going on. I won't move you, but I'll go get the others to move this tree and then we'll summon a healer, okay?”
“Ngggh…” Autumn tried to nod and found herself growing tired.

(Where am I? And for that matter…where are those voices coming from?) The girl turned her head, looking around, trying to find her way through the darkness. She seemed to have no body, no soul. How could this have happened to her? Was this death or was it something else equally terrifying?
“Her injuries are very serious,” an old woman said. “If she were not a demon, she would never be able to breathe properly again.”
“And since she is?”
“She will be good as new in a few weeks. You said she was a hanyou? Then in her human day, she will experience unbearable pain. Do you know when that day is?”
“No…we don't know anything about her…thank you kindly for your help, Yuki.”
The sound of a door opening and closing.
“It's unheard of,” a girl's voice said. (Kagome?) “That a demon would be able to purify the shikon no tama.”
“Well, you better believe it,” another woman said. “The evidence is lying right on the floor before you.”
“Feh.”
“Have something to say, Inuyasha?”
“I still don't trust her.”
“She saved your life!”
“Or maybe she's working on some scheme for Naraku.”
“I can't believe this. SIT BOY!”
WHAM!
“So she stays with us?”
“Yes.” A man's voice. “Does anyone disagree? I personally think that such a beautiful woman would be an excellent addition to our party.”
“Don't push it monk…”
“She really is beautiful, though…”
“I hope she wakes up soon.”
“Let's take her to Kaede.”
The voices fade… (Wait! Don't leave me!)

Autumn woke up and shivered with that memory of being so utterly and completely alone. She yawned, and found her torn midsection laden with bandages. The treated wounds scented of herbs…someone had obviously tried to patch her up as carefully as the could. As she considered to examine her new surroundings, she concluded that she was in an empty hut, and it was now nightfall. Outside, flickering orange and reddish hues hinted at the presence of a campfire.
She tried to sit up, but her sore body protested, so she leaned back against the threadbare pillow and stared at the ceiling. She was still sort of alone, but at least now she new she wasn't some bodiless spirit doomed to forever be an observer. That in itself could be a terrifying hell. Still, sometimes it was nice to be alone.
When she heard someone behind her clear their throat, Autumn realized that she would not be granted that pleasure today…
