Chapter 17 ~ The `Death Twins'
“So what did you do?” Sango and Kagome asked for the thousandth time.
“I told you!” Autumn said. “Rin and I played in the flowers!”
“Played in the flowers, hmm?” Miroku said. “That's a new way of saying you did it.”
Sango hit him over the head with her boomerang, causing a lump to form over his eye. “Shut it, hentai!” she shouted. “You're not helping. You're not even supposed to be listening!”
“Yeah, this is girl talk,” Kagome said.
Inuyasha had no idea what girl talk was and didn't really care. Anything that had the word `girl' had to be really girly. Besides, there were more important things to be thought about. He was still mulling over his discovery about Sesshoumaru. He never thought he'd see his brother making eyes at a woman in his lifetime. Especially not with a lonely hanyou.
“Are you all right, Inuyasha?” Miroku asked. “You seem…quiet.”
“Maybe I just don't feel like flapping my goddam trap!” he snapped irritably.
“He's fine,” Sango said. “If he's got The Mouth running, he's fine.”
“What's that supposed to mean?” Inuyasha asked, even though he knew. He wasn't well known for his upstanding manner and way with words. That was his brother, Sesshoumaru. He cocked his head, looking at Autumn. Was that why she found him interesting? Why did he find her interesting? She wasn't dumb, that's for sure. He looked from Autumn to Kagome. If he learned how to read like his brother would Kagome like him better, too?
“What?”
“What do you mean what?” Inuyasha asked.
“I mean you've been staring at me ever since we left Sesshoumaru's castle,” Autumn said. “Is there something on my face or something?”
Inuyasha did not answer, and leapt ahead to take the lead. As he went by, he heard Kagome say, “I hate it when he gets like this.”
Just exactly how predictable am I? he wondered. He took in a deep breath and smelled something foul. “Oh crap…what is it? People Inuyasha Hates day?”
“What's wrong?” Kagome asked him gently, sensing his change of mood.
“It's those damn twins of death; Jakotsu and Bankotsu.”
“What's so bad about that?” Autumn asked. “Are all undead people evil?”
“They are,” Miroku said grimly. “They work for Naraku.”
“So right, dear monk,” said a man with blue stripes under his eyes. “So if you'll just hand over the girl, we'll be on our way.”
“Forget that!” Autumn shouted. “Cause there is no way in hell that I am going with you two.”
The other man with a long braid down his back laughed and said, “You may wish to reform that opinion, dear.”
The first man made his way over to Inuyasha and smiled. “Ah, my beautiful demon…as always, I don't know whether to kiss you or kill you.”
“How bout getting the hell away from me, Jakotsu?” Inuyasha suggested retreating back a few steps.
“You remember my name? I am most flattered.”
“You reek of death,” Inuyasha said. “I can't stand you.”
“What the heck is their problem?” Autumn asked Sango.
“For some unknown reason…Jakotsu has developed a little crush on Inuyasha.” Autumn followed her gaze towards the cursing Inuyasha who was now swiping at Jakotsu to keep him away. She supposed that it probably was hard for Sango to accept the fact that some demons really weren't that bad looking.
“GET THE FUCK AWAY!”
“Such a naughty demon,” Jakotsu said, taunting him. He pulled out his sword, Jakotsutou, and leaped at him. “I'll have to teach you a little lesson.”
Autumn looked behind and saw the others were busy fighting Bankotsu, so she decided to come to Inuyasha's aid. When he saw her coming he said, “What are you doing here?”
“Helping you! Surely you can't expect to take this demon on by yourself?”
Inuyasha growled as Jakotsu came close again. “I probably could. How can you help, anyway? You don't even have a sword.”
Autumn pulled her sword from her waist. “Oh yes I do…crap! Sesshoumaru must still have it!”
This statement shocked Inuyasha so much that Jakotsu came horribly close to landing a blow on his chest. He started parrying the Jakotsutou and said, “All right then, little girl. You wanna fight? Let's see what you can do without that sword.”
She grinned and the two of them double-teamed the living-dead man. For a while it looked like they might win, but then Jakotsu gained the upper hand and started forcing them back. “Inuyasha, just give me the girl.”
“There is no fucking way I'm giving her to a nutcase like you,” he shouted.
“Fine,” he muttered. With a lash, Inuyasha went slamming into a tree. He must have hit his head heard, because Inuyasha just stood there, stunned. Autumn saw Jakotsu smile and rush at him, sword out.
Oh my God…like my dream…impaled against a tree…
She started forwards, but was grabbed from behind by the other one…Bankotsu. Autumn struggled madly, kicking and scratching. “What are you doing? Let me go!” Inuyasha was right. The smell of decay was so strong it made her cat nose throb and she had to fight the simultaneous urges to puke and whimper.
“You're going back to Naraku,” he said.
Damn it! Why is he so strong if he's dead? I bet Naraku gave him powers.
Autumn glanced at Jakotsu who was now tormenting Inuyasha before killing him. She thought that was a horrible cowardly thing to do, but at least it bought her some time.
A thought occurred to her: I wonder if kicks in the crotch affect dead guys the same way it affects live guys?
It was worth a shot, so she lashed out and kicked him between the legs. It worked. Bankotsu dropped her and started muttering curses under his breath. She ran towards Inuyasha and Jakotsu looked up, smirking. “The other little hanyou. I hope you don't intend to take him away from me.” He tilted his head to one side, “He looks so beautiful when he's in pain.”
“You are sick,” Autumn told him. “You…” she froze as she saw what Bankotsu was doing. He had Kagome?! She was shouting, but no one seemed to know what to do without hurting Kagome.
“Can't you use wind tunnel?” Sango asked.
A little bead of sweat had formed on the monk's brow. “I could, but there are venom wasps…and Kagome could be sucked in too.”
“Well I can't use my boomerang and Inuyasha can't use Wind Scar.” They looked on helplessly at Kagome who was pounding the arm of her captor.
“You had your warning, now say goodbye.”
“No!” Autumn hissed. “No one is saying goodbye…except you.” Her eyes and the necklace began to glow and light channeled out, attacking Bankotsu and Jakotsu. Both screamed as though the light blue beam was a roaring jet of flames and took off, shouting threats (or threats and declarations of love in Jakotsu's case). Eventually, they had disappeared from sight.
“What was that?” Inuyasha asked.
Autumn smiled shyly. “That was the attack of Mystic light. I am now a priestess and guardian of the shikon shard.”
Her friends grinned and gave her hearty congratulations. Even Inuyasha muttered, `good job.'
It was another victory for Inu and the gang.
