Chapter 24 ~ You did WHAT?!
“What are you, a vampire?”
That was the first thing that popped out of Autumn's mouth when he sank his fangs into her neck.
Sesshoumaru, having no idea what a vampire was, remained silent. He could see hurt, confusion, and anger in her eyes and wasn't sure how to act. Damn humans and their emotions. Why can't they just tell you what they want you to do and save you the aggravation?
Autumn put a hand to her bleeding neck and winced. The wound was deep…and it could even be infected later on if not cared for properly. Did they have antibiotics in the feudal era? She was guessing not. Kagome could probably get some but that was not the primary concern in her mind. The primary concern was why had he done it? Had she unknowingly angered him in some small way? How Maybe he was a vampire.
It seems that `why' is the question of the day…
She had done something stupid. Incredibly stupid. Something her parents, the school, the magazines, and her friends had always warned her never to do. And she did it anyway. Yes, that was pretty stupid, considering how she had supposedly been a smart upstanding girl before this… `event.' What was she now? She was in big trouble. That's what she was, now.
“Why did you do that?” she asked, voice harshly accusatory. The bleeding had ceased the rapid flow down her neck, but the dried blood was making it stiff.
He stared her down with those gold eyes and she felt herself shrink back a bit. “To show that you are mine.”
“WHAT?”
Sesshoumaru stared at her as though she was very, very dense. “You…are…my…mate,” he said tonelessly. Not that it mattered. In that moment, for Autumn at least, all sound ceased to exist. The world seemed to spin around her feet. What? Mate? But don't animals…oh God… She hit herself in the head once more for being so stupid. I guess here, demons are sort of animals. It was a cruel thought to think, but she was beginning to find it was true.
“Couldn't you have…I don't know…asked me first?!”
“Asked you?” he raised an eyebrow as though the very thought was ludicrous.
“WELL YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THIS IS A LITTLE SUDDEN!” she shouted. That was a shock. She hadn't raised her voice to anyone since Naraku. Afterwards he had threatened her with a knife. She didn't see any knives here, but was more than distrustful. This guy didn't need knives. His fingers were practically Freddy Krueger blades. Autumn was learning a great deal about the `mighty lord Sesshoumaru' some of which she would rather have not known. “I mean, you steal my sword, then you keep me here and now you tell me I'm your mate all of a sudden.”
When he finally did speak, he spoke in clipped tones. “I have not kept you here. You chose to stay. You could have left any time you wanted to. The decision was yours to make, and it appears that you have made it.”
I could have left anytime I wanted to? Autumn wondered. Somehow, I highly doubt that.
She knew she was being foolish, having a temper tantrum like a spoiled child, but her rage kept coming in waves. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the three words that had kept her were not `I love you' (she doubted if this was in his vocabulary range) but, `Stay with me.' And why had she listened? Was it perhaps because she had seen some fleeting glimpse of kindness or romance?
She pressed a hand to her neck absently. The pain had almost gone, but the feeling of humiliation hadn't. Stupid, stupid, stupid…
Autumn sighed. “I can't stay here right now. I need some time to think about this.” For a moment, it looked like he was going to refuse, but then he nodded his head slightly. Autumn nodded in return and started walking away from him, with Kirara at her heels. Her friends were going to kill her when they found out.
HER FRIENDS?!?!!! She hadn't even thought about them. They would most likely interrogate her about the cause of her delay. When they found out, they would NOT be happy. Especially not Inuyasha.
Just thinking about what Inuyasha would say gave her the shivers. She probably ought to prepare for some real R-rated language when she got back because that was probably what she was about to get. Still, Inuyasha couldn't compare to the fear and awesome power of his half-brother.
Even as she left, she could feel those eyes burning into her back. Did he truly care for her? Did this have any significant meaning to him other than the animalistic title `mate?' Did she even want to know? Her mood seemed to be present to the passer-bys in the hallway because not even Jaken delivered a snide remark.
“Mommy, Autumn!”
She smiled tensely when she saw Rin running to her with outstretched arms. Yes, she thought. I suppose I technically am Rin's mother now. Rin was a dear child, but the thought almost made Autumn throw up again. The stress was simply too much for her to bear.
“Where are you going, mommy?”
Autumn sighed. “Out for a while. I need to think some things over and take care of some business.”
Rin stared at her with wide hazel eyes. “And when will you be back?”
“I don't know Rin, I just don't know.”
Rin nodded, accustomed to getting such open-ended answers, and skipped down the hallway to cover Jaken with flowers. Autumn smiled at the sight and wondered, not for the first time, how such a warm-hearted little girl got stuck with someone who was so distant and aloof.
Another one of the great mysteries of the universe, she thought, as she hopped on Kirara's back.
“You know where to go,” Autumn whispered in the fire cat youkai's ear. “Back.”
