Chapter 26 ~ Lost Soul

“GET UP!” The voice was loud and grating like metal upon gravel.

“Five more minutes,” Autumn muttered sleepily, hugging her pillow. Gods, what time was it? It felt like she had been awake for thousands of years and her body was about to give out.

“NOW!”

Autumn opened an eye, and saw Inuyasha crouching over her. “Oh, it's just you,” she muttered, preparing to go back to sleep. “What do you want?”

“No way you get to sleep,” he growled. “I know all about your little `adventure' in my brother's castle.”

Her eyes snapped open. “W-what?” How could he have known? Surely Kagome and Sango wouldn't have told him. That only left one other option. “Shippo,” she growled. That little rat must've snuck off to Inuyasha…or Miroku…and told them. “Now just wait a minute.”

What were you thinking?” Inuyasha said angrily. “Gods, are you that simple? My bastard half-brother won't want a hanyou as his mate. He'll kill you, you idiot!” He raised an eyebrow as Autumn got up and started to push past him. “What in the names of Hell are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I won't let you.”

“The hell you won't!”

Autumn and Inuyasha got into a scuffle. Screaming and cursing and growling echoed in the field, drawing attention. The fight was only broken up when Kagome came along and shouted, “SIT BOY!”

Inuyasha fell to the ground with a thud. “Damn it to hells!”

“What is going on here?” Kagome asked.

Autumn's eyes were literally red with rage. “Shippo…”

Kagome sighed. “He can be such a brat sometimes… Well, there's nothing we can do about it now. Don't mind him, Autumn. He is only just a child.”

After hesitating a moment, Autumn walked over and offered Inuyasha a hand up. He glared at her and shouted, “I don't need the help of Sesshoumaru's wench!” and he stalked off in the direction of the forest.

Kagome looked like she was contemplating the use of `SIT' but merely sat on a fallen tree branch. Autumn joined her. “Where are Miroku and Sango?”

“Them? Oh…they went off to look around. Thought they saw something odd.” Kagome drew what looked like a chibi form of Inuyasha in the dirt with a stick. “This is crazy, you know. Absolutely crazy.”

“KAGOME!” someone bellowed. Both girls looked in the direction of the forest and saw Inuyasha carrying Miroku—unconscious—and Sango right behind him, silent and rigid with shock. The taijiya's face was slightly wet, eyes with a trace of red as though she had recently been weeping.

“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried.

They ran over to the monk and looked at him anxiously. He was barely breathing and his eyes were vacant. They turned to Sango for the explanation. “I…we…were going…to the forest. There was some trace of demonic energy that was familiar but I couldn't place it. A little girl came out of the bushes, and Miroku hesitated because she was only a child. S-she had this mirror and…” Sango shook her head and became mute once more.

“Kanna,” Kagome said solemnly. “It must have been Kanna.”

“Fucking bastard,” Inuyasha growled. “This is just like him. Putting the damn curse on Miroku and then stealing his soul. This time he's gone too far!”

“You say that every time,” Kagome said warily.

“This time I mean it!”

Suddenly Miroku got up, jerkily, to his feet.

“Miroku?” Sango asked hopefully.

“No,” Kagome said. “There's something wrong.”

Miroku did not appear to notice them as he whipped off the rosary beads and turned the force of his wind tunnel upon Inuyasha and Autumn…
