Never End
Chapter 3:
Kagome wasn't exactly sure how to politely shoo Rin away so she could get some sleep. The young girl was just so excited that she had a new friend that was human like her, even a girl like her. Kagome was trying not to just yell at her to go away, but her head was starting to throb painfully and she was barely hearing anything Rin was saying. "Um, Rin, I," she started to say, but then stopped when she saw the shadow of someone standing in the doorway.
"Rin, you should leave her alone, she needs her rest now," the voice of Sesshoumaru called to Rin.
"Hai Sesshoumaru-sama," Rin said sadly, then gave Kagome a quick peck on the cheek and rushed out.
Kagome thought it was odd that the girl had taken such a quick liking to her, but shrugged it off and looked at Sesshoumaru. `He's just standing there looking at me,' she thought to herself, very unnerved by his presence. `He's probably waiting for a thank you! Of course!' she thought, chastising herself for not realizing that sooner. "Sesshoumaru I-" she started, but he cut her off.
"Rest," Sesshoumaru said, his voice cold and uncaring. He had not meant for his voice to sound so cold, emotionless yes, but never cold. For some reason he almost wanted to apologize for his rudeness, then regained composure and walked off, leaving Kagome alone and confused.
`I know he doesn't like that I'm here,' Kagome thought to herself, `but does he have to make it so obvious?' She sighed and then snuggled her head deeper into the pillow, grateful for the chance to finally rest. `At least he got rid of Rin for me, he must not hate me too bad,' she thought before she fell asleep.
After he left Kagome Sesshoumaru had gone to the dining room to eat dinner with Rin. Not really eat of course; human food didn't fulfill his hunger, but to watch Rin eat, and to keep her company. He enjoyed watching her stuff her face. She ate every meal as if it would disappear if she didn't eat it right away. He was a little more withdrawn tonight though, his mind was still on Kagome of all people. `If that is even her name,' Sesshoumaru thought to himself, he was sure that that was what his stupid half-brother had called her, but he had yet to refer to her as anything more than wench, girl, and woman. `She cannot leave yet,' he told himself, `she has not healed nowhere near enough, I must make her feel somewhat welcome or she may try to escape and end up killing herself.'
"Are you sad Sesshoumaru-sama?" Rin asked him, "You've been acting funny ever since we left Kagome-chan's room."
Sesshoumaru looked up at her, slightly surprised that she had noticed his change in mood, he usually does so well at disguising his feelings. "I am fine Rin," he told the young girl, then he resumed his thoughts, making sure that it appeared that his attention was focused solely on Rin, how it usually is at dinner.
Kagome woke up, unsure of what had caused her to stir. Then she took a deep breath and her stomach rumbled. `Oh!' she thought, `I'm starving!' She looked around hoping someone had left her some food, but the food she smelled was coming from elsewhere. "I don't want to try to walk," she said to herself, "but my stomach won't let me just lie here." She thought for a while about what she should do, but another loud rumble from her stomach made her mind up for her. She shakily placed her legs over the edge of the bed, her splinted leg sticking straight out. "Okay, take it slow," she told herself as she lowered her left foot to the ground. She placed all of her weight on her leg, and then gently placed her right foot on the ground as well. "Ow!" she cried loudly, as a sharp pain radiated in her leg, but she walked on. "Just a few… more steps…" she said as she neared the doorframe, reaching for it to steady her. She gasped when she saw someone standing there.
Sesshoumaru was sitting across from Rin, who had finished dinner and was now eating dessert, when he started to hear her. He almost laughed out loud, but remembered that Rin was still there. The wench was in her room talking to herself. He did not concentrate on what she was saying however, and focused his attention back to Rin, who was now putting strawberries over her eyes and making funny noises. "What on earth are you doing Rin?" he said, letting himself smile a little at her silliness.
"I am a youkai too Sesshoumaru-sama," she said, baring her teeth and making a noise that might have been growling.
"Oh really?" he asked, "And what kind of a youkai are you? A fruit youkai?"
Rin giggled at him, and she dropped her strawberries. "Of course not Sesshoumaru-sama! Rin was a cat youkai, with a beautiful tail," she said, and reached behind her to grab her `tail'; a long, orange carrot she had taken off of her plate during dinner.
Sesshoumaru smiled at her and was about to comment on her `costume' when he heard Kagome cry out in pain. He got up from the table quickly and walked down the hall, worried about her but knowing she was not seriously hurt, he did not necessarily have to rush. He stepped into the doorway and a sharp feeling of disgust pervaded him, and he glared at her, then picked her up roughly and set her back onto her bed. "I told you to rest," he said coldly, and was about to walk away when she made a small noise of protest. "What is it?" he asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"I need some food, please," Kagome asked him, feeling slightly scared.
His expression softened a little, and he felt a twinge of guiltiness over what he had done. All the girl had needed was food, and he had treated her as if she was getting up to run away. `Perhaps I should have asked her what she was doing before I acted,' he told himself. "Food will be brought to you," he told her, his voice a little warmer, but still uncaring. He left her and sent a servant to bring her dinner, then walked back to the dining room where Rin was still playing with her food.
"Is Kagome-chan okay?" Rin asked, slightly worried, but she knew that Sesshoumaru-sama would not have let anything bad happen.
"She is fine," he said, "What kind of a youkai are you now?"
"I'm not a youkai!" Rin said happily, "Now I am a powerful miko, out to destroy the evil strawberry youkais that are terrorizing the carrot village!"
Sesshoumaru let out a low chuckle and continued watching Rin play, while Jakken was watching them from his own dining room.
`Maybe this is why Sesshoumaru-sama saved Rin,' Jakken thought to himself. `He has become different, but perhaps in a good way. It is so rare for him to laugh.'
