CHAPTER ONE
It was late in the night when we arrived at our new home. My mother has moved us around a lot in these four short years of my life. My name is Trisa Meioh, I am four years old, and have long ebony black hair and tricolored eyes. The outer edge of my irises was molten gold, within that was a circle of blood/ruby red, and last came red fire to chase around the pupil. But for a four year old I am very well educated. So far my studies are focused around different languages, herbal medications, and also my mother is trying, with all her might and patience, to teach me how to play Chess. As many have noticed and asked me over the past year or so, "Why aren't you out playing with your friends little one," and I always answered surprised, yet, confused at the same time,” Your joking, right?” Something like that coming from the daughter of the Lady and Countess of the Great Court of the lands surprised many or all that asked me. The reason I always answered like that was that I have never had a friend with my mother was breathing down my neck saying that my studies were far more important than any friend or play mate that I could ever have. But I, Young Lady Trisa, and yes that is my title until I enter my teenage years, have come up with a plan to find a friend, here and now, with out asking weather or not my mother likes.
My mother and I exited the carriage and moved quickly but sophisticatedly towards the door of are new home. I walked carefully but quickly behind one step behind. I stayed a step behind because she was the Countess, but only thing that kept me from walking ten steps and directly behind her was that I was her Daughter. The people that come to see my mother both respect and fear her. Of late, I have been able to sense, as well as see, that fear. I only know that they do not fear my mother because she is a demon, because it is impossible for them to know. We, as in my mother and I, look completely human. The only exception to that would be my eyes that are not a natural eye color among humans. My mothers eyes are dark red, they are dark enough to pass for dark brown. She once told me that I looked exactly like her, and I had looked at her and asked,” And what of my eyes mama, do I have my daddy's eyes?" she had looked at me so lovingly one moment and had suddenly lost all emotion the next. She had looked at me and said in a tone of voice that was both low and calm, but at the same time dangerous." You have no father," and with that she had turned and walked away. But it was so unnerving to be able to feel someone’s fear. Once about a month ago, my mother was talking to someone in our conversation room, and she for some reason allowed me to sit in and listen. It had been the first time I had used that sense without knowing it. He and my mother had talked about what was going on in the court, but something in about him told me that he was lying about something. Because his heart rate had suddenly sped up and his voice had silently shock, if we had been human we wouldn't have noticed it, and say we only because I had no doubt that my mother hadn't noticed it as well. About a week after that he had turned up dead, and only I had seen my mother come home coved in blood.
The only reason I had mentioned the sense was because I could sense the aura of another youkoi and they were close but it felt as if they were simply observing and nothing more. Good thing to, my mother would have killed it the instant it would have appeared to us in a violent manner. My mother was the only Demon powerful enough to kill any of the four Great Demons of the Four Winds. But she has not taken the chance to kill one of them and take their place as the great demon, it still confused me. But if my mother has yet to do it, then she must have her reasons.
We had gone in and gotten ready for bed. My mother came into my room to see me to bed this evening, in fact I can't even remember the last time she had done that.
“My child, tomorrow you are to start a new type of training."
"Training, what sort of training mama?” I said with a twinge of unease, knowing that I wouldn't like the answer.
She was walking towards the door as she said;” You will have to see tomorrow, my child."
And with that she left me to myself, to sleep, to dream, and to wonder what kind of new torture she has conjured up for her daughter.
The next morning my mother had had one of my nurse maids wake me for this new training that she had in mind for today.
She was standing in front of the Goshinboku tree (God tree), with her back towards me. I walked towards her in an outfit she had had made and set out for me to wear. It was like a second skin, tight, so that it fit the contrast of my small body. It had shoulder, stomach, spine, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle guards. When I had first saw the outfit it had made me wonder about what she had in mind for today.
"I am here at your call mama. What sort of training will you have me do?"
"Swords." She spoke without turning around.
"WHAT? Mama, if I may object. I can't use swords, I can hardly lift one.” I said with a slight bit of straining in my voice.
"Please child, I'm totally lost on how strong you are. In fact you are going to study first." with a small smile playing upon her lips she thought extremely amused. 'My darling daughter will never know what has happened till it is too late. Oh, how I can't wait to hear the tragic news fallowing her wedding.
"Mama, what is it that I need to study?" I asked, careful to keep the distrust out of my voice.
"Swords." My mother said simply.
"Swords? I thought you said I was to study, did you not?" the last was more a statement then a question, but oh well.
"Yes, you silly child of mine, I did say that I wished you to study, but I wish you to study swords. In fact I wish you to study all the mystical swords that I have acquired over the long centuries of my life."
"Oh, I see. So mama, where are these swords?" I said, looking around, but I saw nothing that would even be considered a sword.
"The swords are here," She placed her hand on the God Tree,
”They are placed within a barrier I placed around the tree so that they would be hidden from the view any person with less power then I."
"I'm ready when you are mama."
With whatever barrier that had surrounded the God Tree, disappeared, and you could suddenly see all the swords hanging from the branches like apples on an apple tree. But there weren’t just swords; there were bows, arrows, spears, staves, and other items in small leather bags, that could only be crystals and herbs of all kinds. I let out a silent "wow" under my breath.
I suddenly knew what my mother had in plan for me for the next few years, maybe even decades, of my life. This was certainly going to take awhile.
Damnit.
