Bright blue eyes glittered brightly as she stared up at the sky in wonder. Small white dots fell all around her. Looking over her shoulder, she looked to her mother. She held a small, warm smile. Seeing her motioning to exit the house, the girl looked back outside at the falling white stuff. This was snow. She'd never seen it.

Taking a hesitant step forward, she reached out and allowed a couple pieces of the snow to fall on her hand. It instantly melted against the heat of her skin. Giggling, she glanced around once more. Her papa was nowhere in sight. Her shoulders slumped in relief.

A hand on her shoulder caused her to jump a little, tensing up in preparation. The soothing voice of her mother allowed her to instantly relax. “Don't fear Kagome. He isn't here right now. Go on now. Go play in it.”

Looking up at her mother, her eyes sparkled with happiness. “Thank you, Mommy.”

Whirling, she darted into the falling snow. As she stepped out into the weather, it seemed to pick up and the snow began to fall faster. Skipping through the growing drifts, she giggled happily. It had never snowed back home. Here in Japan it was such a new and amazing thing.

As she danced in circles, her laughter rushed out over the shrine. It brought beauty. After a few dizzying circles, Kagome fell back against a tree. Looking up at it, her eyes sparkled. It seemed to be calling out to her. Curling into the tree, she let out a small mew of happiness.

Her happy moments were rare and far between, but she enjoyed every minute of them. In this moment, that feeling of happiness was swirling greatly within her. Closing her eyes, she pushed herself farther back against the tree.

“Kagome!”

Her mother's worried voice caused the child's eyes to open with a snap. Was her daddy back? Instead she was met with blinding whiteness. Looking around, she whimpered softly. She couldn't see the house at all.

Then a soft glow caught her attention. She was glowing! Her eyes widened and a shriek attempted to make its way past her lips. A hand covered her mouth though. Turning her head, she stared in fear at the woman that stood above her. She looked scary at first but then the woman smiled and suddenly there was something so very familiar about her. Her hair was black with streaks in it. On her forehead was a purplish pink sphere and she had lines on her face.

The woman kneeled and took Kagome's hands in her own. “Don't fear little one. I'm here to help you. Papa must never know about this ability.” Kagome looked down at her hands and saw the swirling light around her hands. Lifting a hand, her eyes widened as she watched the snow shift and swirl. She was controlling it! “I can move the snow!” Her voice was nothing more than a whisper.

The woman let loose a soft chuckle. “That isn't all you can control. You can control the elements. You can control fire, water, earth, snow. Anything that nature allows to call its own.”

Kagome gave a small frown. “Why can't Daddy know?”

The woman gave her a sad smile. “No one must ever know. There will come a time when you can show people, but it is not here in this time. Papa and Mama must never know. Bad things would happen then.”

Kagome shivered in fear. She gave a small nod. The woman rose regally. She watched the woman take a few steps away. “Mama is coming to get you. Don't let them see and be a good girl. Conceal it all. You will know when the time is right to let it go.”

Then the woman was gone. It was as if she had never been there. After a few minutes, a warm body lifted her. Looking up, she saw her mama. “I should have known you would be here. Let's go make some oden.”

Kagome grinned, hiding her hands away in her coat. “Yes Mama.”

A few months later, the family was back in Texas. Kagome ducked behind the house and ran straight into the wildflower field. She'd found herself a special tree here at home that reminded her of that special tree back in Japan.

Clouds were beginning to form in the distance. Tears threatened to fall down her cheeks. It wasn't fair. Why did her mama have to get pregnant? It just wasn't fair! Now her papa had started looking at her more.

Arriving at the tree, she curled against it. She sniffled, trying to keep her tears at bay. The clouds began to pile on top of each other angrily. Within minutes, rain started to fall. Remembering what the woman said, Kagome lifted her face and reached upwards. She was angry and tired of everything. She just wished that they would go away. She wanted them to leave her alone.

Lightening streaked across the sky, thunder following not that far behind. Then the downpour began. The scream burst free from the 5-year-old. At the same moment, lightning struck the ground near her.

After a while, her screams died down as she lost her voice. Hiccupping, she leaned back against the tree and fell into a miserable sleep. At one point she woke to a voice talking to her. It was soothing and made her feel happy, so she didn't bother to look.

When she woke again, it was morning. Stepping out of her room, she froze when she saw her daddy. He was sitting at the table by himself. Her mommy was nowhere in sight. “Your mother won't be able to make you breakfast today. Make it yourself.”

Nodding, she moved to the cabinet with the cereal and began the painful process of getting everything she needed. Her daddy had to have yelled at her mommy last night. Worry pierced her. She hoped that she was okay.
