~Chapter 3~

As the dawning sun broke through the window Kagome was stirred from her sleep. She smiled when she noticed the warmth that encased her body. It made her feel safe. Through sleep hazed eyes she took in the white silk sheets that covered her body. She rolled over and bumped into something hard… a body. Like a ton of bricks it hit her that she was not in her bed. She had never made it home. Panic encased her mind as the previous nights events flashed through her mind. ‘Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! I’ve been kidnapped! What am I going to do? Please god don’t let him rape me! I’ll tell him whatever he wants.’

Her hands flew to her throat when she remembered what he had done when he ran into her security system. Fingers rapidly searched her skin for any marks only to touch smooth skin. She couldn’t believe there wasn’t an open wound encasing her neck. Better yet, she couldn’t believe she was even alive. Had her abductor kept her alive just for his sick amusement? Maybe he was going to torture her until he got the files he wanted. Whatever it was this person wanted, she was terrified for her life.

Sesshoumaru waited for her reaction when she finally awoke. He had expected the strong scent of panic and fear to fill the room, but he eyed her curiously when she grabbed for her neck. Maybe she had been injured after all.

He thoroughly enjoyed being by her side but he needed her to know she was okay, and he needed to know what happened. He cleared his throat and she stiffened. He was forced to smile. She was awfully brave for such a small human. “You are safe here Kagome. I do not know what happened to you, but I heard your scream and found you passed out in a puddle of blood.” He ran his fingers through her hair to comfort her as he spoke.

Her head snapped up and her eyes widened. She was so glad to see a friendly face. “Sesshoumaru!” In a heartbeat her arms were wrapped around Sesshoumaru in a tight embrace, tears of relief washing down her face.

He tried to sooth her, gently stroking her hair and rubbing small circles in her back. “Shh, everything will be alright. Just tell me what happened so I can kill whoever did this to you.”

Her tear stained face looked up to his and silver captured his golden gaze. His beast screamed at him to punish the person who caused so much pain to his woman.

She couldn’t believe how sweet he was being or how she never noticed before that his gaze could be so inviting. All she had seen before was ice, emotionless. Now his eyes shown with emotion, concern, anger and something else she couldn’t identify. It took all she had to pull her eyes from his and sit up in the bed. This was definitely a side of him she could get used to.

When she looked down at her clothes she did a double take. She looked back up at him, questions heavy in her eyes. “Where are my clothes?” She asked meekly, blush covering her entire body.

He smiled at her. Everything about this woman screamed innocence. “You were covered in your own blood. I couldn’t allow you to awake to that sight. I had the female servant change your clothes and wash you up.”

When he mentioned the blood her hands quickly flew back up to her neck frantically searching for the wound that she knew had to be there. He had just proved that it had happened. She had been forced to give in to the contents of the syringe plunged in her neck, some tranquilizer of some sort. She remembered her head swimming, her body loosing control, and the man’s disapproval of her computer. That’s when she had known it was over. Agonizing pain washed through her body as she had felt cold steel glide across her neck, warm liquid flowing down her chest, before darkness had finally enveloped her whole.

Sesshoumaru grabbed her hands and placed them in her lap, holding them there. She seemed bound and determined to find a wound that wasn’t there. “There is no wound on your neck. You need not worry. But I would like to know why you think there is.”

Kagome’s bottom lip quivered. It didn’t make any sense. She should be dead. She took a deep breath and spilled everything she could remember. “You hadn’t been gone for five minutes before someone appeared out of no where and grabbed me from behind. He injected something in my neck and used my hands to try to access my laptop. It must not have worked because I felt a lot of pain and cold metal glide across my throat.” Tears formed in her eyes again and she curled up to Sesshoumaru. “I thought I was going to die. I could feel the blood flowing from my body could feel the life draining from my body.”

He didn’t know what to say. Comforting someone was not what he did every day. The only thing he could thing to do was reassure her she was okay and that he wouldn’t let it happen again. “But you are not dead and I give you my word that you will be well protected.”

“Thank you.” She whispered into his chest. She shifted her hands, eyes widening as fingers grazed across skin. He wasn’t wearing a shirt and her hands were on her bare chest. A blush stained her cheeks as she inched herself away from him sitting herself up. It took all she had not to stare in awe. He was the perfect form of man.

No matter how much his body wanted her he needed to know the answer to the question that had been plaguing him since he found her. “How is it that your body has healed such a fatal wound? Only youkai can perform such tasks and you smell very human.” It took all he had not to pull her back into him, to have her skin against his again.

Kagome frowned. It was a question that had plagued her ever since her first cut. It was why she got into genetics in the first place. “I don’t have an explanation for that. I am definitely not a normal human genetically, although I am physically. Let’s just say that I have a lot of extra information. I think this has something to do with my ability to heal, although I didn’t think it went to that extent. It’s a good thing too that I can somehow heal myself because my blood type matches none known. Trust me, I’ve done the research.”

This answer only peaked his curiosity about her more. He needed to know more about her. “Are your parents similar?”

Kagome sighed and shook her head no. “If it were only that simple.” His gaze told her that he was expecting more so she decided to do just that. “There is no genetic link between my mother or father and I. We share none of the same features. If it wasn’t for the fact that they videotaped my birth I would have thought I had been adopted.”

He didn’t know what to think. She smelled and looked human. Granted her scent was sweeter and a lot more inviting than others, but she still smelled mortal. But he could tell she wasn’t lying.

Kagome snapped him out of his thoughts when she cleared her throat. “Don’t you think we should be going to work?” She needed to get away from him. She was having a hard time trying not to stare.

This only puzzled him further. Most would need a lot more time to recuperate from such an attack. “There is no need for you to go. Michael knows what has happened and has agreed to let you work from home until you feel like coming in. He also knows that I will be with you.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and pouted. Now she was stuck. “What if I wanted to go back to work? Maybe that’s how I get my mind off things.”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes. “I will take you home, that’s it. Plus, the room is under investigation anyway.”

Her cheeks pinked as she met his gaze and stuck out her tongue and he smirked. He had caught her staring at his chest. “Fine, be that way. But at least be that way with a shirt on.”

“You act as if you’ve never seen a bare chest before.” He teased.

‘No, I’ve just never seen one as perfect as yours before.’ Her blush deepened then she bolted out the door. “I’ll be right back!”

There was no way she could stand in that room with him like that any longer. It was distracting and unnerving because it was distracting. That, and she had already been caught staring. She sighed. It was going to be a long ride.

Sango threw herself on Kagome when she stepped out of Sesshoumaru’s car. “Kagome! You’re alright! Thank god! I was so worried about you!” She stepped back and glared at her, quickly punching her in the arm. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again!”

She rubbed her arm and laughed. Sango always was a little bit violent. “I promise, it will never happen again. Just don’t punch me again. I need to use this arm.”

Sango smiled as she looked over her shoulder at Sesshoumaru. She raised a brow at Kagome. “And what were you doing last night young lady?” She nearly fell over in laughter at the reaction she got.

Kagome could feel the blush rising to her cheeks. Miroku was really rubbing off on her. She had never been so… interested before marrying him. “It wasn’t like that.”

She glared at her disbelievingly. “Yeah, right. Like I’m supposed to believe that.”

She sighed. There was no getting around this. “Well at least let me soak in the hot tub while I explain everything. I’ve had a rough night.”

Sango flashed her a wicked grin. “Rough huh? Sounds like you had fun.”

Kagome threw her hands up in the air in defeat. “I’ve had enough! I’m going in!” She glanced back to Sesshoumaru before she stepped inside. “You can put your stuff in the room across from Sango’s.”

Sango squealed with delight. “He’s staying!” She ran after Kagome. “Now you really have to tell me what’s going on!”

Kagome slipped into the hot tub relishing what little peace and quiet she was going to get in this bath. She loved how the hot water soothed her nerves and relaxed her tense muscles. It was as if the water could wash all her cares away. There was no work, no friends, no distractions, and no questions about life, there was just comfort and ease of mind.

Moments later Sango waked in and tried to ease herself into the water. She tapped her foot to the water and hissed. “God Kagome, what do you have it at 200 degrees or something? It’s hot!”

She peaked through one eye to look at her. “You know I keep the hot tub set at 106. Just get in, you’ll adjust.”

Sango cringed as she placed her foot in the tub. She didn’t know how she could stand to be in water so hot for so long. As she eased herself in very slowly Kagome laughed and turned around to turn the temperature down. Sango eyed her curiously and she only laughed. “I wouldn’t want you to roast to death, now would I? How would you be able to ask me your annoying questions any other way?”

Sango laughed and wiped the sweat already forming on her brow. “Thanks.” She felt the water cool instantly and made her way to the other side of the tub, completely submerging herself into the water. Her gaze leveled on Kagome and she grinned. “Now how did you end up staying over at Sesshoumaru’s?”

“You have to promise not to overreact.” She warned.

Sango rolled her eyes. “I promise, just tell me!”

After she finished explaining what happened Sango was fuming. “Someone had the audacity to hurt my best friend!” She yelled slamming her fists into the water. “I’ll find out who that bastard is and slit his throat!”

Kagome swore she could see the steam rising off her body she was so red. She laughed and splashed her. Sango glared at her and Kagome held out her arms in defense. “Oh no you don’t! I warned you not to overreact. I’m fine and nothing was lost. Drop it. The mission is safe.” When she saw Sango cool off a little she was relieved. She already had one determined demon on her hands, she didn’t need a determined demon exterminator on her hands too. That would be just too much.

Sango relaxed back into the hot tub and grinned. “So who exactly are going on this mission with us? Better yet, where have you decided we’re going? You said you’d tell me once the new shuttle was set to be built. Don’t think I came here for no reason.”

She returned her smile. “I haven’t chosen the flight team yet. I know that you, Miroku, and I are going, so that leaves two spots open. I was thinking about asking Shippou to come along, but I wanted to make sure it was okay with you first. Sesshoumaru would also be a good choice. That way, if anything ever happens to me, you’ll still have someone capable of understanding what’s going on. As for where we are off to, you should know the answer to that. I am hoping to make it 50 million light years out to Virgo 8121, aka the Dark Galaxy, an invisible galaxy just waiting to be studied. We are going to figure out what’s really there.”

Sango’s eyes widened in disbelief. “They’re going to let you try that? You managed to convince NASA to let you go 50 million light years in space to an invisible galaxy? How did you manage to do that?”

“It was pretty easy after everything else I managed to accomplish. That and I showed them that the radio waves it emits are the same as the shield I will place around the shuttle to keep solar radiation out.” She said calmly, like it was nothing.

“So they agreed to it in hopes you would find life.” She giggled. “I think Shippou and Sesshoumaru are great candidates, even if they are both demon.”

Kagome nodded her head in agreement. “So it’s settled then. By next January the five of us will be taking off.”

A look of confusion washed over her face as her friend told her the lift-off date. “But that’s five months away. I thought it would take a year at least to build the shuttle and prepare for the mission.”

She shook her head. That would be the normal amount of time required, but she had been preparing for this day for the past five years. “I have all the parts I need all ready built, the flight plan already figured out, and all I really have to do is put all the pieces together and program the computer.”

Kagome lifted her hands out of the water and inspected them. If she stayed in this water any longer she would begin to prune up. “I think I’m done in here.” She said as she got up out of the tub and grabbed a towel.

“So why is Sesshoumaru staying here anyway?” Sango asked as she quickly followed out of the tub. “If you ask me, he’s pretty protective of just a fellow research partner.”

Kagome sighed, she just wasn’t going to let it drop. “I don’t know Sango. Maybe it’s the fact that this research is important to him too. I’ve figured things out in months that he hasn’t been able to solve in years.”

An evil smirk crossed over Sango’s features as she dressed. “I think he likes you.”

She nearly fell out of the pants she was trying to put on and looked at her in disbelief. “Me? You’ve got to be kidding. We don’t even get along! I can piss the arrogant bastard off in point two seconds.”

“Well he does seem like an upper class demon, maybe he likes that you aren’t scared of him, maybe he likes your fiery spirit.” She giggled. “Or maybe you impressed him with your never ceasing intelligence.”

Kagome jumped on the bed and grabbed a pillow, quickly chucking it at her friend. “Shut it! He does not like me!”

“Oh come on!” She laughed as she dodged the pillow and quickly threw it back. “Who else do you see the great Sesshoumaru speaking with? He doesn’t speak to anyone if he doesn’t have too.” She dodged another two pillows and laughed harder. “You know you want him to! Don’t deny it. You think he’s hot!”

Kagome’s cheeks flushed and she jumped off the bed and ran after Sango. “You take that back!”

Sango squealed and took off. “Why? It’s true. I’ve never seen you react to my teasing this way before.” She laughed as she jumped over the bed.

Kagome caught her off guard and slammed her down into the bed, quickly straddling her and hitting her with a pillow repeatedly. Sango laughed and grabbed the pillow closest to her head and began to hit her as well. Before they knew what happened they were surrounded in a cloud of feathers, laughter encasing their entire bodies.

Kagome blew a feather off her nose as she laid down on the bed next to Sango. They were both out of breath. “He is not my type.” She managed to say between pants.

“We’ll see about that.” She grinned.

Kagome glared at her. “Why would I get involved with anyone when I don’t think I will ever be able to have children? Or did you forget that’s the reason I keep to myself?”

Sango swallowed the knot that was forming in her throat. She had actually forgotten all about that. It was so easy to just forget about that, she seemed so normal. “I’m sorry.”

She sighed. “It’s all right. I know you just hate to see me by myself.” She rolled over and gave her a hug. “But I’m not by myself when you’re with me, and when you’re not I’m too busy with my work to notice.” She gave her a big smile. “I am far from lonely Sango.”

Sango retuned her smile and jumped off the bed. “Good to know. Now lets go tell Sesshoumaru he’s made the team. You and him both will need to do a little training before we take off.”

Kagome smiled as she ran out the door. This adventure would most definitely be interesting.
