Nice Guy

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha and I don't own Houjo. If I did, I'd have a hell of a lot more cash.

AN: This is it; the last chapter of Nice Guy. This wasn't going to be a long fic in the first place and I may, possibly, write a sequel. But not for a while since I have a couple fictions I want to write first. I've got one ready to go but the other still needs a title. ^_^; Anyways, one of you requested that Inuyasha beat up Houjo in jail and another said Houjo should break out of jail. I'm just going to clarify that Houjo isn't in jail. He's a minor and therefore he can not be placed in jail. I'm going to stop talking now, well, after I thank everyone who reviewed Nice Guy. 58 reviews, Woohoo! Now, here's the chapter you've been waiting for.

“Are you sure you're alright?” Inuyasha asked her as they entered her room.

“For the five hundredth and sixty seventh time, yes, I'm fine. And I'll be fine fifteen minutes from now when someone asks me again.” Kagome replied, slightly annoyed.

Ever since she and Souta made it home, Kagome was bombarded with questions. Her mother actually started crying when she saw Kagome's face.

Her grandfather made her sit on the couch and listen to a lecture about not going out alone to meet with psychotic stalkers. And then he praised her for being so smart as to think ahead.

She shook her head as she remembered finding out that Inuyasha had been there. Grandpa had tried to exorcise him for letting her get hit. She, however, made it clear that she was happy Inuyasha stayed out of it. It would have made things a complete mess if he'd let himself be known.

About an hour earlier, Officer Sensui had called and said that Houjo was under house arrest at the time awaiting his trial. The fact that Houjo was a minor kept him from being sent to jail but he could get sent to juvenile hall or put under a longer period of house arrest.

Kagome smiled and looked at Inuyasha. As she looked at his solemn face staring out her bedroom window her smile vanished.

Inuyasha had been totally out of character since she got home. Ok, not totally out of character seeing as he did yell at her for being so stupid as to take off without telling him.

The thought that he cared so much touched Kagome as it always did and she doubted it would ever stop.

The problem was that after he finished screaming at her, he became very quiet. He would only speak when he asked if she was feeling ok and he had this horribly hurt look on his face.

`What has gotten into him?' she wondered. “Inuyasha?”

“What?”

“Are you ok?”

“Feh, of course I am. I'm not a weak human girl who just put herself in danger for no damn reason.” He replied gruffly.

Well, at least he was kind of back to normal. Kagome never thought she'd see the day where she would be relieved by his bad attitude. But, still, she wasn't going to let him get away with that comment without retaliating.

“Well, this weak human girl got herself out of danger. And for once I didn't need you to come and save me.” She informed him proudly.

Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say as he instantly shut his mouth and his face remained solemn.

“Something's wrong, Inuyasha.” She spoke softly, “I wish you would trust me enough to tell me what it is.”

He looked at her briefly and then back out her window, sitting on her windowsill. She sighed and walked closer to him. She got on her knees and grabbed a hold of his red outer shirt sleeve.

“Inuyasha,” she begged, looking at him pleadingly with her large doe eyes, “what's wrong?”

It was his turn to sigh. He stood up and pulled her to her feet. He looked her in the eyes as he contemplated telling her what was on his mind. Her chocolate eyes, brimming with concerned tears, pleaded for him to tell her and he closed his golden ones in defeat.

“You don't need me.” He muttered so quietly she almost couldn't hear him. Almost.

“What? What are you talking about?”

He opened his eyes, filled with anger and frustration. “You don't need me! You had a problem and you fixed it on your own without my help!”

She blinked, “I'd think that that was a good thing!”

“You don't get it!”

“What don't I get?! You make no sense! You're always saying I'm a burden so you should be happy I did something without bothering you!”

“I didn't mean it!” he sighed and sat on her bed, “I never meant it. I want you to depend on me, Kagome. I need you to need me.”

She sat beside him as he spilled his heart out to her. “Today you proved, you could handle yourself… You could take care of your own problems. Back in the Feudal Era, you depend on me, you need me. But, here, you don't.”

“What are you trying to say?” she asked him, still confused.

He took a deep breath. Didn't she understand how difficult this was for him? He wasn't used to talking about his feelings and he never was any good with his words. “I thought… I thought that maybe… if you still needed me in this era as in mine, you would… stay with me.”

“I already said I wanted to stay with you a long time ago.”

“But you won't. We'll find all the jewel shards and we'll kill Naraku and then you'll go home. I thought that if you still depended on me, even in your own era, you would stay with me in mine so I could protect you.”

Her eyes widened with understanding. “Inuyasha, I will always need you. Maybe I don't depend on you for my life when I'm here but I still depend on you. I depend on you being around me. I need you in my life, not only to save it. I could never leave you; I'd never be able to.”

His eyes softened, “Really?” God, he hated feeling so emotional. But her words touched him.

She smiled, “Really,” she answered and pulled him to her for a hug. What she didn't expect was for him to catch her lips in a kiss.

Her eyes widened as she pulled away. He furrowed his brows in confusion, “What's wrong?”

Was she rejecting him? He didn't think he'd be able to take it if she was. He just, practically, laid out his heart… he couldn't handle it if she squashed it.

Her eyes were filling with tears, “You shouldn't kiss me, Inuyasha, not when you don't mean it.” Her eyes spilled the tears she was trying so hard to keep in, “I will stay with you and I will need you but you can't just kiss me like that. I'm not her replacement!” she shouted.

“Replacement?” he repeated confused. Then it dawned on him, Kikyo. She thought he was trying to replace Kikyo with her.

“You're not a replacement, Kagome…” he said as he took her face in his hands and wiped away the tears.

“Inu-“ she shook her head and pulled away again, “I won't let you do this. I won't let you give me what I've always wanted just to break my heart when you go to Hell with her.”

He grabbed her waist when she tried to get up and pulled him back to him with determination in his eyes. “Kagome, you are not Kikyo's replacement. And I would rather die by Naraku's hands than break your heart. I promised Kikyo that I'd avenge her death and I will. But I won't be going to Hell with her… not when I could have you.”

“Really?” she asked him with fearful, hopeful eyes; her eyes that were filled with warmth, understanding, and love.

It finally occurred to him just how much Kagome did depend on him. No matter which era she was in, she still needed him to protect her heart.

“Really.” He answered as he pulled her closer to kiss her once more. This time she didn't pull away from him.

When the kiss ended she laid her head on his shoulder as he leaned on her headboard and held her.

“I love you, Inuyasha.”

“I love you too, Kagome.”

He looked down at her as he noticed that her as her spilled to one side, bearing her neck to him. His brows furrowed as he saw a deep, purplish mark on her neck.

“Kagome?”

“Hm?”

“What happened to your neck?”

At that question, Kagome's eyes snapped open and her face turned a deep red as she hid her face in Inuyasha's shirt.
