Inuyasha looked around the room. He sat on the floor of a house much like Kagome's, though different somehow. As if it wasn't Kagome's, but merely a house from her time. Some thought inside his head told him he was in a bedroom, but could find no bed, only shadows dancing along the walls. A window let in a faint light behind him, but no matter how much he turned around, the window remained behind him, not allowing him any good light.
He caught a glimpse of black hair and only then realized the reason for his dulled senses. He was human.
A loud crash sounded from his right and he whipped his head around to look, but could see only darkness. He began to panic. Someone was there, he was in danger, but he couldn't see or smell anything. He ran to the small contraption he knew from Kagome's room. He flipped it, but no light came. Frantically, he flipped the light switch up and down, but nothing happened, and the thing, whatever it was, had begun to move towards him.
He flung open the door, peering out into an equally dark hallway. He ran to the next light switch, not even caring how he knew exactly where it was. With a small prayer, he flipped the switch, but again nothing happened. Heavy footsteps were coming up behind him and he shuddered, searching anxiously for another switch or a place to run.
An arm reached towards his shoulder. Cold fingers grazed his arm as he turned, letting out a silent scream as the hallway was suddenly illuminated.
"Inuyasha?"
Breathing heavily, Inuyasha looked up into Kagome's worried face, and traveled down to the arm that hovered over his shoulder. She blushed and quickly removed the offending limb. Behind her, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo stirred in their sleep. A light machine from Kagome's time sat on the floor beside him. It had only been a dream.
Quickly he searched his fingers for claws and ran his tongue over two sharp fangs.
"Are...are you okay?"
Inuyasha merely nodded as he let Kagome's comforting scent fill his nose. He'd always been plagued with nightmares, even as a child, but since he had begun traveling with Kagome, they had come less and less. Just being near her relaxed him considerably. However, when she wasn't near him, when she left him to go back to her own time, the nightmares were even worse. He often dreamed of her demise by his faults. Frequently, Kikyo would interrupt a nice quiet moment in the forest, and shoot an arrow through Kagome's heart, while he did nothing but stare on helplessly. Other times, he would be too distracted to notice her fragile body being crushed by a youkai he had failed to sense.
Even worse were the times he dreamed of her refusing him. They all started the same. They sat on the well's edge while he babbled on about his deepest feelings. She would just stare at him in utter disgust, then disappear through the well, leaving him hurt and alone.
Kagome sat down beside Inuyasha, leaning her head on his shoulder with a sigh, bringing him from his thoughts. She wrapped one arm around his waist, knocking the breath out of him more efficiently than any youkai ever had. He looked down at her head as she relaxed against him and her breathing began to even out. Soon she was dreaming peacefully by a still stunned hanyou.
Inuyasha, hoping she didn't wake up and push him off, laid his head gently on top of hers and fell into a sweet dream, completely forgetting his recent nightmare.
