InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Nightwalker ❯ Chaos ( Chapter 13 )

[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

Sovereignty I didn't mean to hurt you feelings! I don't hate Claire. She was one of the first characters I ever created for this story. Man was this chapter a pain to write. You know, lovey dovey stuff come easily, but battles, nooo. I really hope that you like it!

Disclaimer: Nope, don't own Inuyasha. He belongs to the brilliant Romiko Takahashi alone. Bit Rukiya, Bill, Lilliana, Natalia, Albier, Fenrir, Christiano and Narek are mine! ESPECIALLY NAREK!

I'm just curious: can you guys tell who is your favorite nightwalker in this story? Please stick to original characters. My favorite? Isn't it obvious? (Blush)

Part Thirteen: Chaos

Fenrir looked upon her new masterpiece lovingly. One hundred eighty nine: a level of catastrophe and all in three hours. It was a new record and the room was painted red, sacks of flesh everywhere. She stole a glance at the nightwalker at her side. He looked over her work without a word, having gone silent the day before.

“Do you still think I couldn't be messier?” She asked her low voice. Narek did not turn his head but one majestic green eye spared her a brief look from the corner of his vision. He did not reply.

“My, my, you've painted the room blood red, how delicious.” Fenrir turned her eyes away from Narek to the new boy who made his presence known. Short with hair and skin so white that it looked like he was made of glass, the boy walked over the rotting carcasses without as much of a flinch. He stepped within arm's distance of Narek and Fenrir.

“Hakudoshi.” Fenrir said the boy's name unemotionally.

“I see you've gotten control of the human's base, and made quite a feast as well.” Hakudoshi looked about the bodies. “Did you do this alone?” He peered at Fenrir to see her smirk.

“There are more in the city.” She said proudly, a fang resting against her lower lip as she smiled. “Why are you here?” Her smile disappeared.

“The king sent me to congratulate you on the mass assault. I've also come with orders.” Hakudoshi turned his red eyes to Narek, implying that part of what had to stay was not going to be good news on his part. The elder nightwalker looked upon the boy mutely. “You are to destroy all the anti-venom as well as the recipe for making it. Leave no witnesses and no bastards.” Fenrir nodded in understanding, a snarl on her face. How she hated being ordered around by this child. Narek did not move or speak.

“Is something wrong, Narek? You haven't said a word?” Hakudoshi smugly smiled, his voice masked in sarcastic friendliness.

“Don't mind him. He's taken a vow of silence again. He hasn't spoken since yesterday.” Fenrir interrupted with mild annoyance.

“Has he?” Hakudoshi scanned Narek's appearance. “So how long are you going to keep silent this time? Three months?” To their surprise, Narek smiled darkly at this.

He walked passed Hakudoshi but paused when the boy spoke. “The king wants you to return to him.” There was a deep satisfaction in his voice. “Head to the place where the trees grow old with height.”

Narek nodded in acknowledgement before leaving the room. “Is there a punishment waiting for him?” Fenrir asked with a sly smile.

“Perhaps.”

Inuyasha closed his eyes, trying to concentrate. There was yet no word from Rukiya, Christiano or Kagura, who had gone to check on Richard. He surveyed his fellow nightwalkers on the roof. Bill was pacing, his heart in an uneasy beat, wondering and worrying for his sister. Sesshoumaru said nothing and did not move where he stood at the edge of the building, looking over the city. Albier was the only one who was making a sound, quietly mumbling under his breath, anxiousness coming off of him in torrents.

He reflected to earlier that evening when Bill and Rukiya rushed up to him in a panic. “What's wrong?” He had asked.

“Claire just contacted me, but her voice was broken and I couldn't make out what she was saying. I think she's in danger.” Rukiya had said breathlessly. Bill heaved in heavy sighs in order to keep his heart rate under control.

“What's going on?” Kagome had interjected nervously, not catching what Rukiya had just said.

“We think Claire is in trouble.” Bill answered, his eyes dark and angry.

Sesshoumaru had not been in the house. He had been out hunting when he got the call from Rukiya asking him to rush back. He showed no emotion when Rukiya told him that she felt something was off, but he trusted her instincts, telling her to call the rest of the family. Kagome was slightly shocked when the rest of the nightwalkers appeared in an instant, but held still, listening.

Inuyasha breathed in. It didn't take long for Sesshoumaru to order everyone into the city, and Inuyasha knew that there would be a fight soon. At least Kagome was hidden nearby; he was sure that Lilliana and Natalia would be more then able to protect her. They didn't think it was a good idea leaving her in the house. If Claire really was caught, they could easily follow her scent and find their hiding place, with Kagome as a welcoming gift inside. If there was any moment that he truly appreciated his brother, it was when there was a crisis. Sesshoumaru never left anything behind when he was leading, Inuyasha thought as he spared a glance his brother's way.

He turned his eyes to Bill. The young man walked back and forth, pausing every now and then, his stance constantly alert. There was a point when Bill's walking got on Inuyasha's nerves, but he quickly reminded himself who was in danger and ignored it. Claire. If anything happened to her, he wasn't sure what he would do. She was one of his, and despite how rarely he showed it, he did care for her. One thing was certain: if anyone had hurt Claire, they would pay dearly.

Bill exhaled loudly, walking to stand by Sesshoumaru, his gaze searching the city. Not long after, Rukiya and Kagura landed on the roof. “Anything interesting?” Bill asked urgently.

Kagura shook her head. “Everyone in the building is acting normally. Nothing really seems out of place.”

Sesshoumaru looked at Rukiya expectantly. Unfortunately, she offered the same less then helpful news saying, “I'm afraid I have to agree with Kagura. Everything is so normal that it's almost eerie. I was sure Richard would be angry when Claire gave him our news.”

A wash of cryptic foreboding came over Inuyasha. Intuition told him that a new threat was arising. Turning to Sesshoumaru he said, “I'm going to check it out.” He motioned for Bill and Christiano to come with him.

Sango looked at the papers. Three hours and six different findings came from one small nightwalker captive. “Amazing. The structure is so straightforward.” She said, reading the report.

“What does it say?” Miroku asked from across the room.

“ `Nightwalker venom acts as a breaking down agent to the body, decomposing the blood. Organs and bones would disintegrate slower.' No wonder every nightwalker we attacked with venom retreated. ` The body has a natural resistant to any foreign fluid, but it is slightly weak against the venom, which can dissolve the fighting cells.' So much from one kid's blood sample.”

“At least now we have a legitimate trump card against the nightwalkers.” Miroku smiled, walking to her desk and taking the papers from her hands.

“Yeah, but Miroku. I can't help feeling like what we are doing is wrong.” Sango bit her lip. Miroku gave her an exasperated look.

“Not this again Sango.” He said tiredly.

“But, Miroku,” She replied, rising from her chair, “if the venom is this dangerous, don't you think she'll be severely injured?”

Miroku growled. “I don't see why you are worrying over the well being of some leech. Don't you remember that people like her are the reason for all the murders in the city?”

“I know that but, is using a child who didn't hurt us for experiments right?” She yelled.

“She's not a child and how do we know that she wasn't one of killers? What if she's another predator like the rest of them? We are doing this to protect everyone, remember?” Miroku continued.

“I suppose you're right.” Sango replied halfheartedly, her eyes downcast. She pulled the papers back from Miroku's hands, walking past him. “Where are you going?” He asked as she headed for the door.

“I should get this back to the researchers. They said they would need it later.” She left through the door, leaving a slightly uneasy Miroku behind.

Sango leaned against the door of the office, her eyes closed and the memo in the hand that rested limp against her side. Where had this uneasy guilt come from? Miroku had a point. How could she trust a being that uses humans as a food supply? Yet…the agonizing screams of their new test subject sent pangs into her sympathy. She looked like a child and she recoiled from the smallest of doses. What if she died? Would her comrades exact revenge on them if she did. This was not right, she felt it in her heart, but her rational mind screamed otherwise, telling her it was necessary.

Sighing, Sango pressed the thoughts out of her mind, pushing herself away from the door and walking down the hall. She stole a glance at the papers again, heading toward the research levels of the building. Her thoughts plagued her till she got there, knocking on the door and patiently waiting for someone to answer.

A lab hand opened the door, but only slightly, peeking through the small opening. “May I help you?” He asked.

Sango frowned at his actions. “I came to return this.” She said, holding up the memo.

The lab hand brought his hand out of the tiny passage. Sensing something suspicious, Sango handed him the papers. “Is something wrong in there?” She asked.

He shook his head. “Everything is fine. Only authorized personnel are allowed inside.”

Sango narrowed her eyes at this. She was allowed access to most of this building. Either this boy was a rookie, which was odd because anyone inexperienced was not allowed into the laboratory facility, or there was something he didn't want her to see. As he closed the door, she roughly pushed past him, rushing into the hallway.

“Miss, wait!” He called, trying to stop her, but it was too late. Sango had already run down the hall, pulled the door open, and entered the lab, a look of pure shock covering her face.

“Richard!” He didn't seem the least bit surprised to see her storm into his office, her presence emanating fury.

“Is something wrong?” He asked nonchalantly from behind his crossed fingers as he leaned on the desk.

“Hell yes something is wrong!” Sango yelled in anger. “You're testing that girl's venom on humans!” She stomped her foot in outrage. “I knew this was all wrong, I never should have agreed to this whole capture scheme in the first place! She's your aunt, how could you do this to her!”

Richard looked at her stoically. “You're missing the purpose here, Sango. We need to do this in order to find a way to battle against the nightwalkers in the city. We need a way to protect the people.”

Sango looked livid, her fists shaking. “At the expense of innocent people's lives? Of a harmless nightwalker's life? I'm sorry, but I don't see that logic!”

Richard breathed in, saying his next sentence slowly. “So, you disagree no matter what I say?”

“YES!” She said without a second thought.

“I'm sorry to hear you say that Sango.” Before she could struggle, two of Richard's guards had seized her by the arms, pushing her down on her knees to keep her from fighting. “Richard! What are you doing?” Sango demanded.

“What I want him to do.”

Sango could barely raise her head to see the owner of that voice. A deadly, fiery haired woman appeared by Richard's desk. “Who the hell are you?”

“Silly, sneaky employee, snooping around the research facility. I'm afraid,” the woman came near, her red eyes borrowing into Sango as she kneeled down to be at eye level with her, “now that you know the truth, you are expendable. We don't need you anymore.” She gave Sango a lingering touch over her jaw then stood upright and said to the guards, “Throw her away.”

Sango struggled fruitlessly as the two men began dragging her away. She snarled at Richard, then to the woman who was the fruit of his betrayal. Just who was that evil bitch? Sango felt a hatred for her rooted deep into her heart. It was a foul animosity stronger then the fear of wherever the two men were taking her to. She kicked and squirmed to get out of their hands. Slowly they approached the door and Sango could only guess where they were taking her, or what they would do to her.

Seconds away from being dragged into a horrible fate and Sango squeezed her eyes shut, gathering the strength to fight them off. Then it came, swift as the wind. One moment she was being hauled across the room, the next she was pulled upright by a strong hand around her upper arm. Behind her was a strong heat.

Turning, as the hand let her go and she was able to balance, she saw the bodies of the two men that had been taking her away on the floor, dead. The killer, the blood still on his hands, was a brawny nightwalker, his angry eyes on the woman across the rooms. Two other nightwalkers came in, one of which she recognized: Inuyasha.

“My, will the intrusions never end?” The woman across the room cooed.

“Fenrir you bitch, what the fuck are you doing here?” Bill demanded.

“Just hanging around.” Fenrir smiled as Richard came to a stand.

“What the hell have you done to Richard?” Sango demanded, noticing the dead look on her boss's face.

“That's not Richard.” Inuyasha came forward, standing between Sango and Bill.

“Even if Claire is a nightwalker,” Bill said, “Richard would never intentionally hurt her.”

“I should think you would recognize a drone when you see one.” Christiano said from the doorway.

Sango's eyes widened. “A drone?” She gasped. “Richard's dead?”

Fenrir's lips pealed away to show a deranged smile. “He had the most delicious life blood.”

“No doubt that half the people in this building are drones too.” Christiano growled.

“Oh, how right you are Christiano.” Fenrir replied.

Bill pointed at her. “You've got about two seconds to tell me where the fuck my sister is before I rip out your lungs.”

“Don't you mean rip out my heart?” Fenrir mocked.

“I'd gladly do that if you did have a heart.” Bill snarled.

“Oh, sticks and stones.” Fenrir shrugged. In a second, Bill was on her, and the two nightwalkers were tearing apart the room from the force of their blows. The window behind Richard's desk exploded and then Bill and Fenrir were nowhere to be seen. In the confusion of the moment Richard's drone had taken advantage and flown across the room to attack Sango, but instinct took over and she jumped out of the way.

The drone came back to tear her to shreds and Sango had a moment of panic as she was backed into a corner. The next instant, something flashed across her vision and the drone fell to the floor in a bloody heap. Looking up, Sango gave her thanks to Christiano.

“We have to find Claire and get the hell out of here.” Inuyasha called. He turned to hurry out of the room, but stopped in his tracks. There was another woman standing in front of him. With a scowl, Inuyasha spoke her name. “Bestia.” The woman who had herded Kagome into their battleground was standing in front of him. She was a cause that made him bit Kagome fore the second time. How he had longed to get even, especially now that he was at full health.

“I'm so pleased you remember.” Bestia laughed.

“Chris, find Claire.” He ordered before charging at Bestia, vanishing through the door.

The other nightwalker did not waste anytime turning his attention toward Sango. “Do you know where she is?” He asked.

It took a moment for the stun to subside. Sango nodded. “Yeah, I'll take you to her.”

Christiano took a hold of her wrist, pulling her out of what used to be Richard's office and into the hall. It was pandemonium everywhere: nightwalker on nightwalker, humans fighting drones. Desks, papers, gunshots, screams and bodies surrounded every corner. The cacophony was ear splitting, as though fingers were being scrapped across a chalkboard. Sango's ears stung and her heart hammered from the struggle that had taken over the building.

Trying not to get hit by a stray gunshot, a desk or person, she walked into the disorder, dodging objects and searching. In the midst of it all, Sango identified Miroku as he stood over…himself? A chair flew her way and she ducked, crawling over to Miroku, avoiding the storm overhead.

“Miroku, are you all right?” She asked when she reached him, Christiano behind her. His upper arm was cut and he was holding a gun in his hand.

“I'm fine, not much I can say for my drone here.” Sango stole a glance at the dead “Miroku” on the ground. “Did you know that they were using people as test subjects for nightwalker venom?” He asked her. “I shouldn't have left.”

“What do you mean?” Sango asked, bemused.

“After we caught that nightwalker girl, I left the building to see if there are any other nightwalkers hiding around. If I knew this was going to happen…where's Richard?” He said suddenly.

“He's dead.” Christiano answered when Sango couldn't speak. “Listen girl, I don't have much time, take me to Claire!”

“What is he doing here? What the hell's going on Sango?” Miroku said urgently.

Ripping of the sleeve of her shirt, Sango said, “I don't have time to explain Miroku,” she tied the cloth around his injury, “but we have to get that girl we caught out of here.”

Miroku sent an untrustworthy look at Christiano, then to his partner, who's expression pleaded with him to help. “I'll go along with what you think is right, but it will be hard to get to her holding cell with all the fighting in our way.” Miroku pointed out.

“Leave that to me. You two stay behind me and tell me where to go.” Sango agreed, finding it odd that she was working with a nightwalker. With Christiano as their shield, Sango and Miroku made their way through the battle, their hearts pounding.

Kagome was really anxious. She had been in her apartment with Natalia and Lilliana for the better part of two hours. It wouldn't have been so horrible if she were allowed to leave. The idea that she was a prisoner in her own house did not sit well with her. The idea that Claire was in danger made her nervous as well, not to mention that there was a constant unease between her and Lilliana.

After their argument earlier that day, Kagome didn't know how to approach her. That Lilliana seemed to have some secret conversation with Inuyasha made Kagome refrain from speaking or talking to her. What was her problem anyway? All she did was want to be friendly, she didn't have to cut off her chances just like that. Kagome narrowed her eyes. What did it matter to her if Inuyasha and Lilliana were close? There were family. There was nothing wrong with the two of them being close at all. It annoyed Kagome that the stupid thing irked her. Why should it bother her? It wasn't like he was forbidden to have secret chats with others.

Kagome stole a glance at her two bodyguards from her bed. Lilliana and Natalia sat by the window of her balcony, facing each other and peeking into the night sky through the drapes. They spoke from time to time, frequently looking out the window in case something came their way. Lilliana didn't talk as much as Natalia did. She seemed to be more of the listening type. She also looked as though something was bothering her for her head was downcast most of the time.

Natalia, on the other hand, put on a false smile to lighten the mood. Kagome knew she was worried and on edge, it was shown through the dim light of her eye. The rest of the family had gone to find Claire, telling Natalia and Lilliana to stay and watch over Kagome. They had not heard a word for them since. At one point, Natalia whispered her worry for her mate. That had been the only time she had openly expressed her concern. She hid her emotions behind the brick wall that was her smile.

“Lilliana, how are you feeling?” Natalia asked her. Kagome looked up at the break of the silence.

“I'm fine.” Lilliana answered dryly.

“Have you tried feeding?” Natalia continued. Lilliana didn't answer. Her eyes pinned to something outside of the drapes. She rose to a stand so suddenly that Kagome jumped off the bed to see what was going on. Lilliana pulled the drapes and opened the door, walking outside.

“What is it?” Natalia said hastily, standing and looking outside. “Kagura?” She gasped.

Sure enough, Kagura landed on Kagome's balcony. She walked inside, carrying Bill. Taking his arm from her shoulder, she gently placed him on the ground. “Get the anti-venom!” She ordered. Quickly, Lilliana fished into her jacket, pulling out a brown box. She handed it to Kagura, who pulled out a needle from inside it. She ripped open the bloody shirt covering Bill's chest and Kagome held her breath at the sight of his bloody ribcage, the bones cracked and several muscles snapped. Bile rose in her throat, but she forced it back. She was a pre-med student! How could she go for her medical degree if she couldn't stand a little gore! She chastised herself. Kagura stabbed the needle into Bill's shoulder, injected the treatment and watching as Bill opened his eyes.

Natalia hurried to kneel beside them. “Bill, can you hear me?” She placed his head on her lap. Bill squeezed his eyes shut, grumbling in anguish. The wound on his chest began to heal, slowly, as the anti-venom got to work. “Bill, speak to me!” Natalia called.

“Don't yell.” Bill responded.

“How did this happen?” Kagura asked as she began cleaning the blood away.

Bill spluttered and coughed but managed to answer. “Fenrir's cronies. She called for reinforcements, that coward.”

Natalia stood, giving Kagome an urgent look. “We need to use your restroom.”

Kagome nodded and quickly opened the door that led to her shower room. As Kagura took Bill inside she looked at Lilliana. “Go to Sesshoumaru and the others. They might need help and take your time so that the enemies don't notice you! I'll take care of Bill with Natalia!” The door to the bathroom slammed closed, leaving Kagome alone with Lilliana.

The nightwalker took a deep breath and turned toward Kagome's balcony. A hand on her shoulder stopped her.

“I'm coming too.” Kagome said quickly.

Lilliana looked at her as though she had lost her mind. “Are you crazy? This is a real life battle with nightwalkers, do you realize just how dangerous this is?” She pushed Kagome's arm from her.

Kagome stomped her feet. She wasn't some flower to be protected! What if Claire was really hurt, she had to go and do something! “I can't just sit around! I know I can help somehow and I can defend myself! I'm not a weakling!”

“Yes you are! You're staying here!” Lilliana pushed her back into the room before disappearing through the balcony.

Kagome frowned, secretly reminding herself that Natalia and Kagura were distracted. She could follow Lilliana, especially since she would have to approach the battle slowly like Kagura had advised.

Inuyasha rose to his feet, whipping off the blood on his face. Bestia was a force to be reckoned with but no match for him now that he was no longer caught off guard. He looked proudly at her unmoving body against the wall. “Inuyasha!”

Albier came up to him, panting. The boy's cheek had a cut, but other then that he was fine. “There you are!” He breathed.

“Albier, what's going on? Have you found Claire?” Inuyasha asked.

“No, not yet. There're drones everywhere, and Bill has been injured.” Albier said quickly.

“What about Fenrir?”

“Rukiya is fighting her off so Kagura could take Bill someplace safe. I don't know where Chris is but Sesshoumaru is looking for you.” Following his brother's scent, Inuyasha raced through the building, Albier on his heels, to find him. He could only hope that Lilliana, Natalia and Kagome were safe where they were hiding nearby, and that Bill was going to survive.

He managed to get through all the turmoil of the building to find Sesshoumaru and Rukiya. His brother had not a scratch on him. Rukiya however had blood on her crown, but the wound had already healed. “Where is she?” Sesshoumaru ordered when he noticed him.

“Christiano should be able to find her. What happened to Fenrir?” Inuyasha replied.

“She retreated when Sesshoumaru arrived. It's madness everywhere. Ten drones attacked me at once.” Rukiya answered.

Sesshoumaru growled suddenly. “I smell Narek.” He said. Rukiya's face twisted into a glower. “He's nearby?”

“Yes.”

Sango didn't know how they made it to the lab without getting shot or bitten by another nightwalker, but, with Christiano protecting them along the way, they did. To her shock, there was no one in the laboratory facility. It was completely empty save for the dead bodies of the drones and researchers. She felt nauseas at the sight. Miroku helped her stand by hooking her arm over his shoulder.

“Do you want me to take over?” He asked gently.

Sango shook her head. “No, just help me walk.”

With Miroku as her legs, she led them into the area where the lab subjects were held. There was a white fluid covering the floor. Stepping over it, Sango reached the room that was Claire's prison. She hoped that the girl was still alive. She reached for her pocket, fishing out a key and opening the door. “Claire is inside.” She said. Miroku helped her sit down, out of the way as Christiano walked inside.

He closed the door behind him, his eyes scanning the dim room. Claire lay slumped against a corner, unmoving. His heart clenched but Christiano sprinted up to her, holding her upper half against him. Her skin was like ice. Her lips were blue, her eyes closed. Her heartbeat was slow, but he was thankful that it was there.

“Holy shit, what have they done to you? Claire, wake up.” He slapped her check softly. “C'mon Claire. Please open your eyes.” He pleaded.

Her finger twitched. Slowly, Claire opened her eyes, and they painfully focused on him. “Chris?” She had no voice; when she spoke it came out as a pained whisper.

“Yeah, I came to get you out of this hell hole.” Christiano placed his arm under her knees and the other on her back. He felt Claire move, her hand on his chest.

“Chris, you have to escape.” It sounded as though she was putting a lot of effort in just speaking. Her breathing was too weak and she could barely keep her eyes open.

“Don't talk Claire.” Christiano said, lifting her up in his arms.

“No,” Claire croaked, trying to make her voice more forceful, “You have to listen to me…”

“I'll listen later. You need to rest.” He urged, standing, but Claire forced herself to continue.

“There is an ambush waiting for us. Fenrir, Narek and Hakudoshi have destroyed all of the anti-venom…there's a dozen enemy nightwalkers waiting for their chance to bite us… it's a trap. You have to get everyone our of here, Chris!”

DONE! *Sings Final Fantasy victory song* Man, this chapter was SO HARD to write. You have no idea, but I wanted to update quickly so here it is! I hope you liked it!
