InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Nightwalker ❯ Termination ( Chapter 38 )

AUTHOR'S NOTE! PLEASE READ! Right, so I went back and fixed a few things here and there in this chapter. I also went back and fixed that annoying yellow font, yay! So the next chapter will be up as soon as I'm done with it. I hope you enjoyed this update.
Okay, let me just start off by saying two things. First, I'm so sorry this took so long. My computer crashed, taking all of my pre-written chapter files with it, so I had to re-write this whole thing. Second, I hate writing fight scenes, especially final fight scenes. I always feel that they are not epic enough, or climatic enough. Either way, I hope that this works, because I'm uploading this from a new computer. Thanks again guys, and I'm sorry it took so long…
Moving on.
Oh, right Disclaimer…

Part Thirty-Eight: Termination
When she heard the sound of leaves crunching on the forest floor, Kagome knew that someone was close. She knew who it was by the scent. Then Lilliana appeared in the clearing. She frowned at Kagome, but stood her ground; her back straight, she stared into Kagome's eyes, awaiting an appraisal. Instead, Kagome faced her with an unreadable expression. They watched each other, waiting to see who would speak first, waiting to see who would attack and who would defend and retreat. And Kagome, with so many questions in her mind, could only wonder what would happen next.
There were so many things that didn't make sense. There were so many memories in her mind and yet she couldn't find an answer. Who was the woman that was standing in front of her? Over time, Lilliana had become just as much as an enigma as Narek; her actions proved that she was just as unpredictable. Would she still be on their side in the final battle? Would she still stay with the family even though she allied herself with Narek for a short time?
“You're not going to say anything?” Lilliana asked.
Say what? Kagome thought as anger swelled up in her like a bubble of magma. “What is there to say? Are you still the same women who taught me how to be a nightwalker or have you turned your back on me after all your high and mighty speeches?”
“That depends on whether or not you still have some trust left in me.”
Kagome laughed. “It's interesting how the roles have switched. I never thought I would be the one who would have to question who you are and whose side you're really on. Did Narek brainwash you into agreeing to whatever plan I saw in his memories? Or did he sweet-talk you into it? Because from what I saw, it looked to me that you and he were pretty lovey-dovey with each other. It must be nice to give up your family's trust because of some misguided love for a traitor.”
The ice in Kagome's words seemed steal the warmth on Lilliana's face. She broke her gaze from Kagome's and said, “I had to, Kagome. It's not something I can explain right now, but I had to hear Narek's side of the story, I had to know-”
“Know what? Why he betrayed the family? Why he's a crazy bastard? I've seen things from his point of view, and things are so jumbled that I don't know what to believe. Why did you go to him and what did you agree to? Or is this because of some twisted sense of duty? Because of that mating mark on your chest?” Kagome stopped to take a breath but before she could speak, she sensed Inuyasha's presence, followed by Sesshoumaru's. They were close.
Before they appeared, Kagome whispered to Lilliana, “It's too late for words. There's only one thing left to do now and only action will be on your favor.”
Lilliana didn't say anything but her green eyes blazed with a challenge. A moment later, Sesshoumaru appeared in the clearing. He made his way across to Kagome, ignoring Inuyasha, Kagura, Rukiya, and Natalia as they appeared in the clearing behind him.
“Where is he?”
“I can lead you to him.”
Inuyasha moved forward as if to say something but Sesshoumaru shushed him by raising his hand. “We'll need all the help we can get. Lead the way.” He told Kagome.
The moment Kagome turned around, the memory of a winding pathway appeared in her mind and then became reality as she started walking toward it. Then she broke into a run. Trees, rocks, bushes, and cliffs, blurred together as Kagome raced toward the mountain with the flat summit, the sky a black blob overhead. Finally, Kagome skidded to a stop. Behind her, the others came to a halt.
They stood on the slope of a mountainside. Below, illuminated by silver moonlight, was a sea of dark greens and browns as trees blended with the mountains. Kagome looked up. Beyond those rocks at the top of that mountain was a flat summit. A horrible thought struck Kagome. What if he wasn't there, already gone after he set his demons on them?
Suddenly Sesshoumaru hissed. “That's him.” His eyes reddening, he flashed by Kagome as he jumped toward the top of the mountain, Inuyasha at his heels.
“Finally.” Kagura began running up the steep trail and Kagome, Lilliana, Rukiya, and Natalia dashed after her. As they came close to the top, an ominous presence pressed against their chests with searing heat. Kagome felt sweat rolling between her eyes and her chest heaved. The presence was so strong that it was like stepping into a furnace; heat pressed against them as though trying to burn their skin.
At the top, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru stood side by side, watching the King from across the summit. He stood with his back turned to them, paying no attention to the seven nightwalkers that had come to challenge him. Then finally, Inuyasha growled, breaking the last peaceful silence that they would hear before the impending battle. The King turned, setting his red eyes on them. “So, you've finally arrived. Useless boy's cage couldn't finish the job.”
Inuyasha took a step forward. “Why don't you just kill us yourself then? Why waste your time?”
The King spent a moment staring at his youngest son. Then he scowled. “Your blood disgusts me. The scent of that vile woman, it coats your every pore.” The King raised his hand and clenched his fingers and suddenly Inuyasha stumbled backward as though someone had hit him in the stomach. Before the King could do any more, Sesshoumaru stepped in front of his little brother.
“And what of that vile woman? What possessed you to kill your mate? What made you decide to take the name of a king and slaughter nightwalkers, children and adults alike?”
The King snarled at his oldest son. “Humans. His mother,” He spat on the ground, “she wouldn't listen when I told her that what those monsters had done to nightwalkers from the ages past. When I told her what I planned to do, what I planned to teach our soon-to-be-born son about how to be a leader, she disagreed with me. She tried to run and take my unborn heir away from me. Did she care that I had been victimized by humans? No, she wanted to raise the next heir to be loathsome idealist.”
“That's why you killed her?” Inuyasha growled as he slowly stood straight. “Because she was protecting her baby?”
“Better dead then raised to be weak. And you, Sesshoumaru, you are not even related to her and yet you still agree with her ideas about humans? Those maggots control this world while we live in the shadows. They should writhe beneath us. If not for you're silly rebellion taking my attention, I would have conquered those vermin long ago.”
Sesshoumaru shook his head. “You're wrong. For me, humans are nothing but cattle to feed off of.”
“Then why rise up against your own flesh and blood, boy?”
“I find you're way of rule intolerable. You throw away nightwalker lives, you disregard the predisposed rules nightwalkers have lived by for generations, you're even willing to kill your mate, the woman you pledged your life to, along with your unborn son. As a leader, you are not trustworthy. You say it was all for the good of all nightwalkers to rise above humans, but the ends don't justify the means.”
“Hmph. You are just as much of a fool as your brother.” The King raised his claws and flexed his fingers. “No vision beyond what you see in front of you. And now you've brought these human born bastards to fight me.”
Inuyasha growled and slid his feet apart. Sesshoumaru's eyes reddened.
“The time for words is over. I've had enough of both you. You'll join that woman soon enough!”
The King raised his hands before Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru could get out of the way. Both brothers fell forward on their hands and knees, wailing and coughing up blood. The pain reached it peak but then stopped. Sesshoumaru looked up to see that Kagura had jumped forward and slashed the king across his chest. Just as she brought her claws back for another strike, the King grabbed her by the neck. Lifting her up, he drew his arm back, but Kagura kicked him in the stomach and, instead of piercing her heart, he cut a patch of skin above her breast.
Snarling in anger, the King tightened his fingers and focused his eyes on her. She began to kick and squirm in the air as she tried to fight off the pain and get air into her lungs. Then Kagome, Rukiya and Sesshoumaru charged, knocking the King to the ground. He let go of Kagura, and she fell to her knees, gasping for breath. Claws, teeth, and fists tried to rip skin from bone, but the King overpowered all three of them with his speed. He sent his claws into Kagome's solar plexus, drawing blood. She feel back. Her head hit the hard rocky ground and she distantly heard the sound of a scream.
Rukiya was thrown back, slashed from her cheek to her stomach. Sesshoumaru soon followed. In the seconds after the first attack attempt, Inuyasha, Natalia and Lilliana rushed the King while the others tried to gather their strength. With fury radiating in his attack, Inuyasha managed to get a small cut across the King's neck, but the slice wasn't deep and the King kicked him hard in the chest, enough to break a few bones. He then grabbed Lilliana's arm, snapped it like a twig and threw her away from him just as she screamed. He grabbed Natalia by the neck when she tried to attack him. With his other hand, he restrained her arms. She had gotten close enough to stab him in his side, and for that he bit down hard on her neck, draining her blood. Natalia's eyes watered and her body slowly became still and then…
The King dropped Natalia's prone body and covered his ears. He howled toward the sky and began searching for the noise that was making his head. He spotted Lilliana. She was on her knees, but her voice pierced through his mind like a needle slicing into his brain. Lilliana's voice grew louder and the King felt as though invisible chains had rooted him to the spot. Unable to step forward, he brought up his hands and slowly bent his clawed fingers. Suddenly Lilliana's singing stopped, and she began to wiggle and squirm in pain. The rest of the family tried to move but the King focused on all of them. Screams escaped their throats as he increased the physical pain he was inflicting. The unseen force slammed into their bodies, slowly sapping their strength to resist. The weight of the pain forced them down, crippling them.
“Who shall I kill first?” The King said as he stepped over Natalia's unconscious form and walked toward them. He passed Inuyasha and he paused. “I'd like to be rid of that woman's scent.” He hauled Inuyasha up by the hair, watching as blood slid down his son's chin. “You're innards must be churning with pain by now.”
Inuyasha wheezed through clenched teeth, his hands held onto where the King's fingers were digging into his scalp.
“Do you want me to put you out of your misery?”
Inuyasha spat. His blood landed on the King's cheek. The King placed his claws on Inuyasha's chest, digging his nails into the skin. Inuyasha groaned painfully as his nails sank deeper.
“NO!”
The King turned his heard toward the source of the sudden outburst. “Ka…gome.” Inuyasha breathed.
“Interesting.” He dropped Inuyasha carelessly without paying attention to how his son landed in a bone-crunching heap on the floor. “Stop.” Inuyasha puffed as the King walked toward Kagome.
Pain slammed into her and Kagome reeled; her body felt as though she had just hit a solid wall. But even as she doubled over in pain, she couldn't tear her eyes away from the King's approaching shadow.
“I suppose you are the most human of the bunch.” His feet appeared before her. Then he stepped on her hand. Kagome cried out as her bones cracked. “The last I saw you, you were nothing but a sniveling human wench. How disgusting.” For an instant, he turned to look at Inuyasha. “You took this creature to be your mate? And she's not even old enough to be ready for such a union. Hypocrites.” He kicked her in the shoulder.
Kagome screamed. “Stop!” Lilliana and Inuyasha yelled.
“Quiet.” The King narrowed his eyes and all of the family members screamed as agony ripped through their bones.
Unable to keep herself up, Kagome's arms buckled and she fell flat against the ground. Her heart pounding in her ears, she could barely feel the King put his foot against her head. “Insects like you need to be squashed.”
The King pressed his foot against her head. Kagome screamed, white spots flashed in front of her eyes, her face pressed hard against the stony floor, the pain increased and then-
“I couldn't agree with you more. Well, partially agree.” The onslaught of pain receded slightly, and Kagome had enough strength to open her eyes. That voice…
“Excuse me?” She heard the King say. Kagome turned her head as gently as she could. Her eyes found a pair of shoes next to her. As she slowly looked up, Kagome's heart began to clench in fear. “No…” She whimpered. She knew this would happen, she knew he would be here, but it didn't stop her heart from melting from fear and sorrow.
“To answer your confusion: I agree. Some bugs should be squashed.” Narek looked around coldly and then settled his frigid gaze on the King.
“Well then, why don't you start with a few worms?” The King said.
“With pleasure.” Narek took steps toward the King and Kagome. She heard his footsteps and her heart froze, her face reddened, and her eyes burned with tears. “I suppose I'll start with you.”
All the pain left Kagome's body. Once it was gone, the emptiness she felt made her feel somehow peaceful, but in the next second, she realized that something was not right. Someone was grunting next to her. Kagome slowly stood, trying to understand what she was seeing and feeling.
Freed from the pain that held them down, the rest of family members rose to their feet, gasping, but they didn't move. Frozen, they watched the unbelievable scene in front of them. The King's face twisted between rage, shock and pain as he crossed his arms in front of his stomach.
“Move, damn you!” Narek yelled at the family, his voice straining from the effort of holding the King in place. “Or are you going to let my efforts go to waste?”
“Narek, you,” the King straightened his back, breaking Narek's hold on him. He charged at Narek, claws outstretched, and knocked him down. Using his legs, Narek threw the King off him and rolled back to a stand, panting. “Damn.” He hissed. His hand covered a blood red gash that across his neck.
The King flipped in the air and came crashing downward and Narek jumped out of the way just as the King stomped into the ground. With furious speed, the King hacked and slashed Narek with his claws, while Narek struggled to stay one inch away from the deadly edges, but the King's hand cut across his shoulder, snapping Narek's color bone. Grunting in pain, Narek stepped closer to the King, grabbed the arm that had injured his shoulder and used his weight to throw him toward the floor. Yet the King was far from finished. The instant he found himself falling he slapped a hand against the earth and flipped back to his feet to lung at Narek again but this time he faced another traitor.
Sesshoumaru slammed against his father, knocking him against the ground. Using his momentum, he restrained the Kings hands and punched his father's jaw before he could recover from the surprise. Then he drew his arm back for another attack. The second Sesshoumaru's hand came close, the King bit hard on the fleshy part between his son's forefinger and thumb. Sesshoumaru drew back, letting go of his father's hands, his first mistake. The King sliced his son's chest, leaving a crisscrossed gash to spill blood. He punched Sesshoumaru hard enough to send him aback and then flipped back onto his feet.
Just then, Kagome, Kagura, Inuyasha, Lilliana, and Rukiya came at him. A tornado of ferocious claws fell upon the King all at once, from every side, leaving cuts and slits along his flesh. Blood leaked from the small wounds, and yet the King matched the family's attacks with tireless speed and vehemence. One by one the family member fell back, each sustaining a nasty scratch where the King's claws had sliced them and once they were far enough for him to concentrate, the King unleashed another terrible wave of anguish on his attackers.
Again the family fell in pain. Worse then the light of the sun, the pain seared their insides. Even Narek, who had become woozy from the all the blood that dripped from his neck, couldn't hold his feet for long. He crawled on the floor like the rest of them, trying to get close to the king.
“Did you really think that you had a chance of defeating me?” Breathing in, he looked down upon the nightwalkers. Cold eyes watched them suffer without a single care. Something moved in the corner of his vision.
Inuyasha wriggled as he held his head. Through teary eyes, he sent a scathing look at his father. “You fucking cheater.”
For a moment, the pain eased and Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru looked up and saw, with shock, that Narek had his hand up and was pointing his fist in the direction of the King, who's face was beginning to pale from the slight pain. Narek crawled toward him, clenching his fist.
“Do you really think, that you're weak ability with blood-bone control can hold me!” The King snarled. Fire came crashing down on Narek like hot iron being pressed against him from all sides. Narek screamed, but, with shaky limps, pulled himself toward the King. “No…but this will.” He grabbed the King's ankle.
“Will what…ARGH!” The King stepped back, holding his head. “No…that…damn you!” He kicked Narek and the traitor fell hard against the floor, but Narek smiled when his back hit the stone. The effect was broken, his clue given. The family charged the King again, slower this time; the lingering torment from the King's assaults had hindered their movements. A vicious battle cry and the attackers were once again thrown back. His eyes on Narek, the King lunged to kill him.
“You little cretin, how did you-” And that was the King's undoing. In the second that he had focused on Narek, Kagome had jumped onto his back, laced her arms around his neck and shut her eyes tight.
A whirlpool of images penetrated Kagome's mind. She screamed, and she heard the King's scream echo her own, but she did not let go, not even when her skull began to hammer with thunderous pangs of agony. “Kagome!” She heard her family yell for her in the distance.
“ATTACK HIM! NOW WHILE I STILL HAVE THE STRENGTH TO HOLD ON!”
The King's pain became her pain. He bucked and clawed at her hands to get her to let go, and Kagome fought against succumbing to the torture of his blows and the misery she saw in her mind. Pictures, thoughts, feeling flashed through her while anguish assaulted her body. The humans who sodomized the King when he was too weak to resist, the humans who killed his fellow nightwalkers after tying them to a stake and letting them burn in the sunlight, the nightwalkers who did not help him or listen to his tales. Kagome saw the images drill through her mind as painfully as the King's hands attacked her body.
Then, suddenly, Kagome felt herself being slammed against the floor. The air knocked out of her, and she gasped for breath. The King was pulled off her, and she heard sounds of grunts and screams from ally and enemy alike. Her head spinning, Kagome tried to sit and see through blurry eyes. Lilliana was on the floor, gasping and nursing terrible wounds on her chest and legs. Rukiya slashed the King's side before she too was thrown back but her attack was strong enough to distract the King long enough for Kagura to grab his arm, twist it behind his back, and break his shoulder. In anguish, he kicked her away from him.
Then Narek ran up to the King, sidestepped behind him and grabbed his neck. Soon the King was reeling in torment and trashing all over. With his attention on Narek and the memories in his mind, he didn't see his sons approaching. Inuyasha's hands went for his father's neck, cutting deep into his windpipe, while Sesshoumaru's hand went straight through his father's stomach. With a yowl, the King violently spun, pushing all his attackers away with the last of his energy.
Heaving with the effort, tired from the burning in their wounds and their bodies, the family stood, shaking, watching the King as he stumbled backward toward the edge of the cliff, holding his neck and chest. “Y-you…” He tried speaking though damaged vocal chords. Then the King raised an arm toward the sky and suddenly Narek, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru were once again on their knees, coughing out blood. “I w-won't…not alone…your hearts will…”
It was too late. “Die!”
“Inuyasha! Sesshoumaru!” Kagura yelled.
Someone moved the last second. It was Lilliana. Her voice broke through chill in the air, the King grunted in pain and then…
“Narek!”
Suddenly all was silent. Slowly, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru rose to their feet. Narek and the King were gone. The only people remaining on the cliff were their tired and injured family members. “What happened?” Sesshoumaru said. As he looked around, he saw that Rukiya had come to a wobbly stand. “I don't know.” Kagura rushed to him, inspecting him with her hands. “You're not hurt?” She said.
Sesshoumaru touched his chest. He felt dizzy and weak from the pain his father had inflicted on him. The deep cuts on his torso and chest were beginning to repair themselves. He felt nothing but fatigue and a bone deep ache. Luckily, he thought, it didn't seem life threatening. “I'll be fine. Where's…”
“They fell off the cliff.” Lilliana said. She held the large red gash over her breast. In her lap was Natalia's head. Natalia's face was pale and her eyes were closed but she was breathing heavily in Lilliana's arms. “Will she be okay?” Lilliana asked as Rukiya came to kneel next to them. She lifted Natalia's wrist and inspected the cut on Natalia's head. “I'll think she'll survive. As for Narek and the bastard King…” She looked over to the edge of the cliff. “I'm not sure anyone could survive that fall.”
For a while, no one spoke and then a moan cut through the silence. It was Kagome. Inuyasha went to her and knelt down. “Are you okay?” She was still sitting, her hands on her temples. Blood was dripping from the back of her head onto her neck. “I-Inuyasha, we need to-ow.”
Inuyasha placed a hand on her back to keep her from wobbling backward. Then he bit his wrist and held it up to her. “Here,” he said, “this will help.”
Kagome shook her head. “No, you're hurt too.”
Inuyasha looked down. Cuts decorated his chest and arms and he could feel pain from several broken ribs as well as the hurt coming from his insides. He felt tired to the bone, but even so, the crack in Kagome's skull worried him more then his own tired and bruised muscles.
“You need it more then I do.” Too tired to argue, and having a tough time resisting, Kagome bit into his wrist.
While Kagome drank some of his blood, Rukiya surveyed the damage. “Is everyone all right?”
“I think I'll be fine…can't say much about my arm though.” Lilliana held her left arm close to her side, tenderly nursing her broken forearm. She hissed when she moved her shoulder.
As Rukiya and Kagura, who were the least injured, looked at Lilliana and Natalia's wounds, Sesshoumaru walked toward the edge and looked down. “I'm going down to check.”
“I'm going with you.” Kagura said. “Rukiya, see if you can contact the others and call for help. I think Natalia, Lilliana, and Kagome should find a place to rest.”
“No.” Came Lilliana's weak voice. “I have to go down with you.”
“You're hardly in any position to-”
“Please, Sesshoumaru. I have to go.”
“M-me too.” Kagome mumbled.
“No. You really need to relax.” Inuyasha said.
“So do you.”
“I'll manage. I'm not the one who almost had my brain splattered on the floor.”
“If you're going down, I'm going down.”
“I can't just-”
“Inuyasha, shut up and take me down. I need to see.”
“I don't think it's a very good idea to separate.” Rukiya said before Inuyasha could try to change Kagome's mind again. “We should all go down together. I'm too weak to defend all of the injured, and if any reinforcements come, I don't think I can handle them alone. We're all tired and sore. Separating would only put us in danger and tt's not a very good idea to stay up here.” She appealed to Sesshoumaru, trying to give him a determined look even though she felt weak and exhausted.
“Well?” Kagura asked.
“Let's go.”
At the bottom of the cliffs was a small clearing apart from the trees. There, against the shale from the side of cliffs, sat one body. Several feet away, another body was sprawled against the dirt. Fatigued from the climb down, Inuyasha stayed back with Kagome and the others as Kagura and Sesshoumaru slowly approached the two figures. They knelt down against the person on the floor first. “He's dead.” Sesshoumaru said, turning his father's body over.
Inuyasha breathed out slowly. “It's over.”
“Yeah.” He heard Kagome say in his ear. Inuyasha grunted, both in agreement and slight pain. Carrying her on his back was hurting his ribs. “Are you okay?” She said.
“Yeah…I'm fine. I've been through worse.”
“No,” Kagome whispered. “I meant…even after all he's done, he's still your father. Are you really okay with this?”
He looked over his shoulder. “I'm fine. I decided this was best a long time ago.” Kagome gave him a weak smile. “So long as you're fine with it.” She placed her head against his shoulder, hoping to alleviate the wave of dizziness in her head. “Finally.”
Inuyasha walked out into the clearing. Behing him, Rukiya gently set Natalia down against a tree. She slowly approached Narek's body. Lilliana was kneeling next to him, feeling for a pulse.
“Get away from him you two.” Sesshoumaru said as Inuyasha and Kagome approached. “I can hear his heartbeat. He's still alive.”
Rukiya jumped back as though she had gotten an electric shock. “Inuyasha,” Kagome began. “Don't worry. We'll have him dead in no time.”
“Wait, listen to me.” Kagome tried explaining but Kagura cut across her.
“What shall we do?”
“Kill him.” Was Sesshoumaru's reply. He moved forward to finish Narek but Lilliana stepped in front of him. “Wait.” She said.
“Step aside. I care not what he did in the last moment. He can't be trusted. If he can turn against that dead bastard, he can turn against us.”
Lilliana didn't move, but she didn't meet Sesshoumaru's questioning gaze either. “I can't let you do that.”
Distrust flashed across Sesshoumaru's face. “Don't tell me this is because of some silly obligation or some sudden feelings of attachment.” He hissed in warning.
Lilliana shook her head. “He saved my life more then once, I have to return the favor.”
“So that he can return and wreak havoc on us in the future? Step aside! I'll not ask you again.”
“Why not listen to her?”
Sesshoumaru turned to glare at Kagome. “Excuse me?”
“Kagome, what's gotten into you?” Inuyasha said.
“He knows things Inuyasha. Kill him now and you'll lose the truth he can offer. I've seen into his memories and if he hadn't jumped in that last moment, we would all be dead by now. Don't you think he deserves at least one act of mercy?”
“I care not for what this traitor has to say. His role is over as far as I'm concerned.”
“Sesshoumaru,” Lilliana said in a quiet voice. “I can't let you kill him without knowing the truth, especially since he helped us in the last moment. It wouldn't be fair.”
“No…” Came a tiny voice. Lilliana gasped as Narek grasped her uninjured hand with a feeble grip.
“Lilliana get away from him!” Rukiya yelled.
“Lilliana,” Narek said in a rough whisper. “I've had enough. Let him…put an end to me.”
Finally this chapter is out of the way! I've been wrestling with how to write this monster for AGES! Once again, I apologize for the grammar and spelling errors. I will return to fix them later, but once again, I've written this chapter late at night and I need sleep. Gotte get up early in the morning. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed and review…please? Thanks. Jian out!
