Chapter Seven

Author' s Notes: Shit, sorry this took me so long to update. I forgot about it, what with school and all. Plus, homecoming's coming up in two weeks and I have yet to find a heterosexual male to go with. XD Any takers? No, just kidding. Anyway, on with the story!

*Yeah, yeah, I've sunk to the level of using "orbs" instead of "eyes." Then again, I've seen "orbs" used for "breasts" too...Hmm. Blame the government for that one, children.

Disclaimer: See Chapter One for details, kiddos.

Last Time:

"Miroku...oh, Miroku, please, say something...!"

"Kagome...love you..." Miroku's eyes rolled back in his head as he promptly fainted.

Kagome's innocent, slate blue orbs* widened in shock as she stared down at the unconscious young man draped bonelessly across her lap. Did he just say what she thought he said?

For what seemed like an eternity, she merely sat there in wonderment, stroking the boy's cheek and kissing his bruises as if willing them to disappear. She was pulled from her introspection and disbelief by a calm, kind hand on her shoulder.

"Higurashi-san. He needs treatment. Please, come with me."

"H-Houjou-kun...?" She turned and stared at her classmate, wondering where he had come from. Why, they hadn't spoken since she'd started dating Inuyasha...

Inuyasha...her eyes, surprisingly, did not fill with tears as the sound of his name, his voice, echoed through her mind. Instead, she simply nodded and allowed Houjou to take Miroku from her.

It amazed her how strong he had become, despite his rather weak and, to be perfectly blunt, wimpy appearance.

She followed him down the corridor to the infirmary in a daze, feeling as though her feet were floating a few inches above the immaculate imitation-marble flooring. God, who made that awful stuff, anyway? She'd seen it before in shopping malls and gas stations, although they were not places she, Kagome Higurashi, frequented. The colour here was exceptionally nasty, consisting of a green reminiscent of The Exorcist and a pale tan...but she had to admit, it was rather nicely-

"...Higurashi-san? Higurashi-san? Kagome!" Houjou's voice jolted her from her thoughts, and she gazed at him with an expression that was the human equivalent of a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming freight truck. He sighed in exasperation, something that surprised both of them, and took her arm gently, leading her to the cot on which Miroku lay prone.

Wordlessly, she sat down in a chair near him and took his hand, stroking the fingers lightly. His class ring glittered on the third finger of his right hand, a simple gold band that looked something like a wedding ring.

"Oh, Miroku..." The name came out as soft as an infant's sigh, and his eyes fluttered open as her sweet breath ghosted across his forehead.

"Ka...go...me...?"

Upon hearing her own name, she leaned down and enveloped him in a bone-crushing hug.

"Miroku! You're awake...you're all right...I thought..."

The door banged open, earning a scowl from the school nurse, as Bankotsu stormed in angrily, a starry-eyed Jakotsu clinging to his arm.

"Oh, Ban-chan...I do hope your darling cousin wakes up soon so that I may..."

"Cut that out, Jakotsu! This isn't the time for...mmph!" His words were cut off as Jakotsu began to rain kisses all over his face and neck. Blushing madly, he tried to pry the hormone-crazed youth from him. Which was not an easy task, considering that Jakotsu had a good five or six inches on him.

"Ah...hell. Miroku, buddy, are you okay?" Finally breaking free of his lover's grasp, the aforementioned boy strode over to his cousin and grabbed his hands, pulling him up quickly. Miroku yowled in pain and clutched at his head. Kagome hissed and touched his cheek gently.

"Let him rest, damn you! My ex boyfriend just beat the shit out of him. Which reminds me..."

Kagome reached into her blouse and pulled out the chain with the rose coloured pendant on it....

And flung it against the wall. It struck a spot slightly below a shelf containing medical books and the like hard enough to leave a dent, and slid down to the floor, where it shattered.

The nurse gasped indignantly and looked up.

"Now really, young lady, was that necessary?" Kagome stood and glowered at the middle aged woman.

"Yes. It was." Leaning down to Miroku, she placed a delicate, feathery kiss on his lips, turned on her heel, and opened the door.

"Miroku. Call me sometime."

And with that, she clicked her way down the hall to class, hips swaying, hair blowing back as if by some unseen wind.

Miroku just stared.

End.
