Chapter 2
I Gave You More Than I Could Give
InuYasha helped Kagome up and they got dressed. They were feeling better than they had in days, despite the mysterious blue energy transference that had happened at the end of their love-making. Hand in hand, they walked back to the campsite. The first to see them was Sango, and she raised her head, a hopeful expression on her face. The slayer smiled in relief when she saw how much better InuYasha looked and how happy Kagome seemed to be. Shyly, they let go of each other's hands when Miroku and Shippo looked towards them.
“We're making some breakfast,” said Sango. “It should be ready soon.”
The mood of the group lightened significantly as they watched InuYasha eat. He hadn't shown much interest in food these past three days, and to see him eat with the same old zeal made everyone relieved. InuYasha stopped eating when he noticed they were watching him.
“What?” he said. “You'd think you guys had never seen me eat before!”
The group broke out in smiles and soft laughter to hear him spout the same old attitude. They had not noticed they'd missed it until it was back. InuYasha was the first to finish eating.
“We should go,” he said. “We've wasted enough time.”
No one bothered to tell him that it was his grief that had kept them idle for the past three days. Instead, they just finished their meal and went about the task of packing up the campsite. As they walked through the forest, InuYasha suddenly gestured for everyone to halt.
“I feel it too, InuYasha,” said Miroku. “A demonic aura headed our way.”
There was a rumble on the ground, and the forest trembled around them. They stood firm, as the demon raced upon them. Suddenly, it broke through the forest and reared up in front of the hanyou.
“You have shikon jewel shards,” it boomed. “Give them to me!”
In form, it resembled a cobra, only many times bigger, and with a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. As InuYasha leapt at it with Tessaiga, with the intent to cleave it in two, it opened its mouth and sprayed a pungent, dark, mist in his face.
“Feh!” InuYasha gasped, choking. “I can't see…can't breath…ugh, my nose!”
The hanyou swung blindly, missing the demon completely and collapsing on the ground. The snake demon dove for him, jaws open wide. Sango threw the Hiraikotsu, but the demon was too fast, dodging the missile. Miroku did not want to use the wind tunnel for fear he would suck up InuYasha.
Kagome felt panic rising inside her, and something else, a strange shift of energy. Acting out of pure intuition, she raised her hand and it emitted a beam of blue light towards her felled lover. The light became a dome of energy around him, and the demon bounced off it.
Sango had her Hiraikotsu back, and she swung it again. This time it did not miss, cutting the demon in two. Kagome staggered, and the barrier disappeared. Miroku, Sango and Shippo went running over to InuYasha. The hanyou sat up, blinking his eyes and coughing.
“Are you okay?” said Sango.
“Yeah,” InuYasha said as his sight returned. “What happened? And where's Kagome?”
In the rush to get to InuYasha, they hadn't noticed that she was not with them. Looking around, they saw her crumpled on the ground.
“Kagome!” InuYasha yelled, and leapt up landing at her side in a heartbeat.
Kagome lay on her back, head turned to the side, unconscious. InuYasha picked her up and held her to his chest as the others arrived.
“Kagome!” he said, his voice hitching in his throat. “Please wake up!”
The others knelt around him in stunned silence.
“Tell me what happened!” he growled angrily at them.
“When you went down, Kagome created a barrier around you,” Miroku said.
“What?!” InuYasha said in astonishment.
“It came from her hand,” said Sango. “A beam of blue light that coalesced into a barrier. The demon would've swallowed you, but it bounced off the barrier, making it possible for me to cut it down with Hiraikotsu.”
InuYasha went pale.
“A…blue light?” he said, and looked down at the unconscious girl in his arms.
`Does this have anything to do with the energy transference - that blue light - that happened between us?' he thought. Seeing Kagome like this made InuYasha's already sore heart constrict with pain, and he took a sobbing breath. `Please wake up! Come back to me,' he thought. `I just couldn't bear to lose you too.'
