Chapter 45

This is No Ordinary Love, Nothing Can Come Between Us.

As punishment, they made Shippo sew the tent back together. He grumbled, but he really had no choice. Not even Kagome would stand up for him, and she told him he was lucky she didn't let InuYasha beat him into the ground. Everyone took turns standing over him to make sure he was doing it right. And one time, when InuYasha was impatiently standing guard, he did not like how Shippo was mending it and ripped it out - making him do it all over again.

One thing was for certain, Shippo had finally learned his lesson. No one bothered to give him any explanations for what they were doing, but he figured out some of it himself. At least, he now understood why they were hiding it from him. And after Kagome blew him away when she lost control of her power, he did not want to experience that again.

The trail of Naraku was fraught with various dangers - but none they could not handle. When Kagome needed to recharge, they would go into the mended tent, and Shippo would stay outside, pouting but resigned. This gave Kagome time to refine her abilities. She was able to put up barriers around Sango, Miroku and InuYasha simultaneously; levitate them and their weapons; and pack an even stronger punch when she shot her arrows.

Almost three months into their journey after they had left Masahiro, the group was traveling by foot on a warm summer's day. InuYasha did not let Kagome walk anymore, except for exercise. She had just begun to show a small bump on her slim figure.

“I sense a very large evil aura ahead,” said Miroku, stopping in his tracks.

“Yeah, I can smell it,” said InuYasha. “It reeks of Naraku.”

“Do you think it is him this time and not one of his incarnations?” said Kagome.

“Only one way to find out,” said InuYasha. “Let's go.”

It took them until the morning of the next day to be sure they had found Naraku. They knew his barrier was now impenetrable to the red Tessaiga. It was up to Kagome to see if she could penetrate it with her new, more powerful archery attack.

“Umm, InuYasha, doesn't this place look familiar?” said Kagome as she climbed down off InuYasha's back.

“It's Mt. Hakurei,” said Miroku. “But it looks different from the last time we were here.”

“So where is Naraku?” said Sango.

“He's close,” said InuYasha, drawing Tessaiga. “Get ready.”
As if on cue, Naraku appeared on a slope halfway up the mountain. He saw them and smirked, and then put up his barrier. Slowly, he descended towards them.

“I see InuYasha's gang of misfits is all here,” said Naraku sarcastically. “Good, I will destroy you all.”

Kagome pushed Shippo behind her and raised her hand. A ball of blazing white light appeared in her hand, and beams shot out, encompassing InuYasha, Miroku and Sango. Naraku quirked an eyebrow, as Kagome notched an arrow on her bow.

“Do you really think your purifying arrows can get at me?” said Naraku.

“Get ready everyone!” said Kagome, narrowing her eyes and smirking in an echo of her lover's favorite facial expression.

The power blazed so strongly over Kagome's arrow it encompassed the bow as well. InuYasha had drawn Tessaiga, Sango had readied Hiraikotsu and Miroku brandished his staff. Watching with a modicum of wariness, Naraku stood his ground as the arrow shot towards his barrier. The barrier exploded in a blast of white light, and everyone rushed towards Naraku. The evil half demon lashed out at them all viciously, but kept on regenerating as they sliced at him through their barriers. Naraku could see that their weakness was Kagome, who could not keep a barrier up around herself at the same time as she protected the others. This forced InuYasha to remain on the defensive, protecting the miko.

“InuYasha, send the backlash wave against him, and I will follow up with one of my arrows,” said Kagome.

“Right,” said InuYasha, and released the attack.

Just then, Sesshomaru appeared with Rin, near Sango - and too close to InuYasha's backlash wave. Sesshomaru was intent on reeking his own destruction on Naraku, and did not see Rin getting too close for comfort. On the side nearest InuYasha, Kohaku appeared. And Kagome released her arrow.

“InuYasha, get Kohaku!” said Sango, as she ran to pick up Rin and get her out of the way.

“I'm on it!” said InuYasha, leaping into action.

Kagome's arrow hit its mark right behind InuYasha's backlash wave, and it was too much for the evil hanyou to deal with. He started to disintegrate and Kagome could see the jewel, falling through his remains. Now being the closest one to Naraku, she ran to get the jewel. But what she did not see was the huge hole that had opened to swallow up Naraku's remains, because she was looking up at the falling jewel.

“Kagome, watch out!” said InuYasha, Kohaku in his arms.

“I got her!” said Sango, running towards Kagome with Rin still under one arm.

The demon slayer made a grab for Kagome - but only got pulled down the hole with her. All at once, InuYasha, Sesshomaru and Miroku cried out in dismay and tried to get to the closing chasm. They were too late.

“Kagome, Kagome!” cried InuYasha in anguish, falling to his knees where the hole used to be.

Shippo came running forward and threw himself on the ground in front of InuYasha and beat it with his fists.

“Open up!” the kitsune wailed. “Let them out!”

The hanyou gripped his head as sobs threatened to overwhelm him. This was not supposed to happen! Where did they go? How could he save his Kagome? Miroku knelt by his side in a state of shock, while Sesshomaru looked so angry that he was threatening to transform, his eyes red and fangs extending. Kohaku fell to his knees in confusion nearby.

Then something very strange happened.

InuYasha, come find us.

InuYasha looked up wildly and gasped. That was Kagome, but he did not see her - and in astonishment, he realized he was hearing her in his mind.

InuYasha, we are in hell, come find us. Remember, this is no ordinary love - nothing can come between us.

A/N : The End of “No Ordinary Love.” Stay tuned for the sequel, “Nothing Can Come Between Us,” to find out how InuYasha, Miroku, Shippo, Sesshomaru and Kohaku get Kagome, Sango and Rin out of hell. But don't hold your breath - I have to finish writing “This Wasn't In The Job Description,” first.
