Chapter 8

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or any of the characters.

Warning: Sorrow filled chapter.

Saturday came and went. It was a very stirring day for the Higurashi family. Yes, Sango did indeed allow Souta to live with her and Kohaku. Fore you see, Sango didn’t have any parents. Her parents had died when she was younger and she had stayed with relatives until she was sixteen, when she was emancipated. She had made sure to take proficient care of her little brother along the way. She now lived in a small, two-bedroom apartment, which she worked most weekends to pay for. She hated her active schedule between caring for her brother, friends, work and school. She graciously took in Souta, in hopes he would help her out with Kohaku.

Inuyasha tried difficultly to spend his time consoling his best friend and spending “getting-to-know-you” time with his soon-to-be-girlfriend. That is, she would be if things went in his favor.

Kagome Higurashi ended up rooming with her newest friend. Miroku’s foster parent’s agreed to give their last available place to Kagome. They were very generous people, hence their being foster parents. Kagome was pleased to have such wonderful people caring for her in her mother’s absence.

It was currently Sunday morning and the foster children were allowed to stay home and do as they pleased until their ‘parents’ returned. Kagome was pleasantly lost in the realm of her dreams. A rather large ball of orange fluff landing on her stomach abruptly awakened her. She woke with a start and her eyes darted around fearfully. Her cloudy chocolate orbs locked onto those of the orange ball of fluff.

“Kagome-chan!” It screeched happily and flung its tiny arms around her neck.

“Oomph. ‘Mornin’ Shippou-chan.” The miko grumbled, halfheartedly shoving the kitsune off her and getting up to prepare for the day.

She combed her fingers through her raven locks hastily as she made her way to the house’s kitchen. Upon entering, she found her wide-awake pervert of a friend munching happily on cereal.

“Why good morning Kagome-chan!” He chirped merrily, his violet eyes shining with some emotion the miko couldn’t place.

“Urgh…Miroku…How can you be such a morning person!?” She mumbled, walking towards the table to sit next to him.

“Well…It’s not important right now. I’ll tell you later. And, Sango is coming over to help you organize your side of our room.” A rather wide grin appeared on the boys face upon mentioning the infamous best friend. Kagome rolled her eyes at the obvious perverse thoughts radiating from the boy next to her. She slumped in her chair and placed her head on the cool tabletop; dozing peacefully until an annoyingly loud sound awoke her, yet again.

Hours later Kagome, Miroku, and Sango lie on the floor of the bedroom. They were admiring the girls’ handiwork and discussing the new arrangements.

“So…Kagome…What do you think of Emi and Katsu?” Miroku questioned attempting to rebound from his previous quiet episode.

“Well…I love Emi. She may not be my mother, but there is something about her; it’s just so warm and inviting! And Katsu…Well I haven’t had a father of my own for quite some time now…So I don’t quite know what to think about him…I do like him though! He seems so….So…Willful! As if nothing could stop him from doing something he truly believed in. I do believe I could learn a lot from him…” She trailed off staring at an old family portrait. Startlingly tears sprung from her eyes. She tried profusely to wipe them away, but there was some foreign ache in her heart. She pulled her knees to her chest as her friends tried to comfort her.

“Kagome…What’s wrong? Is it all this talk of family?” Sango’s bright, shining orbs bore into her own. The distraught miko shook her head meekly, drying her tears and forcing the dull ache away.

“I’m fine…I was just overwhelmed.” She laughed halfheartedly to ease the tension now present in the room. Miroku backed off nervously, while Sango continued to stare at the girl until she was sure she was okay.

“Well…Do you think we should invite Inuyasha over for this little get-together of ours?” Miroku inquired cheerily.

“NO! -I mean…No I think he would be too busy with Kikyou…” Kagome quickly covered up her unwant of their favorite hanyou with feigning to care. The boy next to her, his face fell. He looked at the female across from him in question. She shook her head and they both gazed at the miko. Being gazed upon gathered a slight reddening along her cheeks. She realized the attention she had brought upon herself. She laughed nervously and stood.

“So…I think I’m going to call up Eri, Yuka, and Ayumi…Maybe Hojo…Do you two want to join? I’m sure we’d all have a great time! And I don’t want Hojo to be the only guy there….So…Please go?” The pleading look in her eyes caused them to somewhat, if not more, reluctantly agree. “Eeeii! Thank you guys so much! I really need some friend time right now!” The girl happily skipped out to locate a phone, leaving two very confused teenagers in her wake.

A silver haired boy was laying upon his bed gazing out a window. He sighed and flicked his gaze towards the phone next to him. He had been lying in the same position since he had awoken. Even his uncaring brother had wandered up to see what the matter was. Usually the hanyou in question was in the kitchen before dawn, wolfing down his breakfast. Today it was unusually calm in the residence in which he resided. As well as it should be, fore he was the only one at home. He had had a horrible dream that he was useless.

Dream…

The hanyou was walking along a dirt path unsure of where he was going. Somewhere deep inside he knew his destination, but he couldn’t think of what it could possibly be. During his walking, he happened upon a battle. He stopped to watch, and aide one of the two sides if need be. That was when he realized that battle was between two of the females he held above all others…Kikyou and Kagome. He saw how badly injured Kagome was and wanted to run to her side. His feet wouldn’t move. He tried with all his might to make his feet move from the spot, but they were stuck. A gradual feeling of sorrow filled his heart all the way to his very being. He was at a loss of what to do. He couldn’t help his best friend, but he didn’t want her to beat his love. Slowly the scene in front of him changed, he reached out for it to stay; it didn’t help. In front of him, he saw Kouga…And Kagome? He tried to scream out to her; no voice came through. She looked directly at him as if she heard him…She was looking right through him. He tried in vain to get to Kagome, but all the Gods rained upon him were to make the couple in front of him kiss. It was as if they were mocking his agony. That too faded like the other. He sighed at the current sight before him. There were bodies. Corpses surrounded him. He screamed in horror. Yes, this time his voice rang through. The bodies were those of whom he loved the most. Sango, Miroku, Kagome, Kikyou, and even his cold-hearted bastard of a brother. There were more, but he dared not to look at them. He didn’t want this to be happening.
‘Why does everything bad happen to me? Why can’t anything good happen?’ Then before he could comprehend what was happening Kikyou was full of life again. She was by his side and laughing. It seemed as though they were having a good time. It was as if life was on high-speed. Life was good. ‘Hmm…So good things do happen?’ He thought hopefully just to have her fuming in his face. “Inuyasha! You’re useless! No one needs you!” Those words rang through his mind as he woke with a start.

Ending of dream.

A scream erupted from the violently thrashing boy. He was panting heavily and sleep clouded his senses. The words rang through his mind. ‘Inuyasha…You’re useless…No one needs you…’

Thus leading him to where we last saw him. Lying where he awoke. He was waiting for someone to call. Some one to prove to him he was needed.

His prayers were answered in the form of the doorbell.

How was that? I don’t have my editor tonight…I’ll put up the fixed up version later, but I thought I should put this one up while the story was still fresh in everyone’s minds. (
