Summary: Miroku tells himself that he's in control - that she has feelings for him. He says it over and over again until he murmurs it in his sleep... It still does not make it true.
Miroku is going to die today - he's not being negative, he knows it. As the blood leaks from his side, he feels his life draining away from him.
He opens his wind tunnel further to draw Naraku into it- might as well sacrifice an already dying man to save the lives of friends, allies, and, well, her.
He knows it's foolish to admire her, to comfort her, to love her. Because, without a doubt, Kagome has always been undeclared as Inuyasha's. It has just been one of those unspoken rules - like he was the only man allowed to grope women and not be castrated or he and Sango will be married after this because it's expected...
Or Kagome loves Inuyasha with, quite literally, all her soul.
If he was terribly romantic or a complete and utter liar, Miroku would say that he has always been in love with Kagome. Has always wanted to bring her into his arms and never let her go. That he has always thought that a day in bed with Kagome is a day well-spent.
But Miroku is not terribly romantic nor is he a complete and utter liar (only when it suits him). He can admit (to himself) that yes, all he saw Kagome as before was Inuyasha's woman in an indecently short "skirt". That all he saw Kagome as was a large sign that said 'FORBIDDEN'.
Indeed, he still sees her as a large sign that says Forbidden.
He remembers the first time he ever entertained the thought of being with the young school-girl. A few months ago Inuyasha was being an idiot (as per usual) and went off to meet with Kikyou. Nasty words were traded between him and Kagome and he and she ran in different directions (needless to say, Inuyasha went towards Kikyou). The remaining three of the group played rock-paper-scissors to decide which would comfort Kagome.
It was Miroku's lucky (some would say unlucky) day.
He had comforted her when she quite enthusiastically launched herself into his arms. Then, suddenly, her mouth was on his and she was clutching him desperately to her.
Just as quickly as they had connected, they seperated, and with a look of horror, Kagome fled.
Its a month later when they end up n the same compromising position. It's not till several meetings later that he makes her cry out in pleasure and Miroku feels something in him grow and all he can seem to do is smile at her.
As quickly as it appears his smile breaks as she whispers his name.
"Inuyasha."
Miroku tells himself that he's in control - that she has feelings for him - that she's not using him. He says it over and over again until he murmurs it in his sleep... It still does not make it true.
It still doesn't fix his breaking heart.
Yes, it hurts him everytime he accepted her into his arms, but he doesn't stop her. He is, after all, still a man.

If he was terribly romantic or a complete and utter liar, Miroku would say that Kagome would mourn his death. That she would be heartbroken and swear to never love again. That she won't end up with Inuyasha and he'd live through this and she'd choose him.
The problem is, Miroku is not terribly romantic or a complete and utter liar.
