“Private school? You're sending me to private school?” Kagome stared incredulously at her mother and grandfather. What could have prompted them to make this decision?
Her mother and grandfather stared placidly back. Her mother sipped at her tea, then replied evenly: “Your grandfather and I both decided that this is the right choice for you. You see…”
“Best choice! How can this be best? I worked hard to get into my school! It's one of the best schools in Japan! And now you want to uproot me in my second year to send me to a school I've never even heard of before?”
“I know this is difficult for you Kagome, but it would be better if you sit still and listen.”
Kagome heard the edge in her mother's voice and sat. “I'm listening,” she mumbled.
“The reason we are sending you to this particular school is because it is the only school able to deal with your…abilities.” Kagome quirked an eyebrow. This had just gotten more confusing.
“Your miko abilities”, her grandfather supplied.
The eyebrow went further north.
“Miko abilities. Ooo-kay. I just don't see why…”
Her mother cut in again
“This shrine has been in our family for generations. Kagome nodded, this she already knew. “Members of this family usually display….enhanced spiritual abilities. Her mother paused. “Sometimes these powers are active. Your grandfather has a bit-”
“What do you mean a bit?” Her grandfather cut in indignantly
“Your father had some as well. As do you.”
“You are a miko, Kagome. A powerful miko, by the looks of it.” Her grandfather said proudly.
“But…wouldn't I know?”
Her mother suddenly looked very uncomfortable. “Well, Kagome. You are truly an unusual case. You displayed no spiritual abilities for a long time.” She took another sip of her tea. “On your 15th birthday, your abilities suddenly exploded. You couldn't handle it. You hurt yourself badly. Your grandfather was forced to bind you.”
Kagome barely remembered her 15th birthday. She had gone into the well house, chasing their cat. She had woken up in the hospital 2 days later. She was told that she fell down the well and injured herself, but there was apparently more to that story.
“So I didn't fall down the well?”
“You did fall down the well. When we found you, we were so worried…” her mother shuddered, reliving the memory.
“Grandpa thought that binding you would be the best option, at least until your body and mind was strong enough.
“So that's why you started me on archery and judo and yoga.”
“Yes, but another complication arose…”Kagome's mother reached for her cup again, and then put it back, realizing it was now empty.
“You began to fight the binding spell. For short periods your spiritual power would run unchecked, resulting in-”
“My blackouts?”
“Yes. We knew it would only be a matter of time before you would be able to break the spell completely, and we would be right back where we started…” Her mother poured herself some more tea. “A few weeks ago, Shikon academy contacted us. Apparently they've been noticing your surges of power. They will be able to help you develop your abilities safely. We looked into them, it's a fine school. In fact, some Higarashis have attended it in the past.
Kagome absorbed this. It seemed a bit far-fetched, but she knew her mother would not lie to her. Especially about something as important as school. She also had to admit to herself that she know something was not quite right with herself. She sighed in resignation.
“When do I start?”
Her mother touched her arm comfortingly. “Next Monday”.
Five days. Five days until she kissed her life as she knew it goodbye.
