Chapter 8: Planning the Party
Hana's POV
I woke up Monday morning feeling very refreshed and well…very happy. I still couldn't get over how well things went for Aoi. Even though I had a feeling Bankotsu felt that way about her, I was still worried about her getting her heart broken by her first love. Anyway, I was in a good mood because of the mere fact that my sister was happy.
When I finished getting dressed I just so happened to look at my calendar. I tuned the page and gasped when I saw November 28th circled with the words in big red letters `My B-day!' I couldn't believe that I had forgotten my own birthday. But then again, I had been focused on so many other things I guess it seemed like the least important thing at the moment. I suddenly thought about Aoi and smiled. I wiped off the current message (it was written with an erasable marker) and then wrote `Hana and Aoi's B-day!' While I finished getting ready I thought about how special our birthday would be because we'd be able to spend it together.
When I got in the car, I mentioned our upcoming birthday. I was surprised to find that Aoi had forgotten about it too because of everything that had been going on.
But now that it was at the top of our minds, we happily talked about different ways we could spend it.
“I guess we would have the same birthday though, wouldn't we?” She asked.
“No Aoi, we're twins but we were born two days apart!”
“Leave me alone! It's Monday!”
When we got to school, I wasn't surprised to see Bankotsu waiting for Aoi at her locker. When he saw us he smiled and waved at us. “Hey twins! How was your weekend?”
“Fine.” We said together. When Aoi walked closer to him, he immediately hugged her and I heard him whisper “Hey baby…”
“Hey…” Aoi whispered.
“I missed you.” He said with their noses touching.
“But why? We were only apart for two days.”
“That was long enough.”
I struggled to smile, quickly cutting away the feelings of envy that tried to build up inside of me. I was not about to allow myself to become jealous of my sister just because her love life was prospering better then mine. There was just no way.
Aoi's POV
When I noticed Hana was standing by herself, I quickly broke away from Bankotsu's embrace (even though I really didn't want to). He looked at me, confused and said “What's up?” I whispered that I would explain later. He nodded, kissed me on the cheek, and then headed to his class. When he was gone, I walked up to Hana and said “You okay?”
She smiled at me and said “I'm fine Aoi. Don't worry about it.” But I knew that wasn't the entire truth. Ever since Sesshomaru told her that he was unsure of his feelings, she had been sensitive to any form of romance (even though she helped me with my date). I was about to say something when suddenly we saw Kagome, Sango, and Miroku heading our way.
“Look who's here. You ready to tell them our big b-day news?” Hana asked.
“Sure! Guess what everybody?” I asked.
“Chicken butt…” Sango said sarcastically.
I looked at Sango, “Don't be such a smartass Sango!” I said, even though I did think it was sort of funny. “Obviously that's not it.”
“Then what's up?” Kagome asked.
Hana and I looked at each other, and then back at our posse, “Our birthday's coming up!”
“Really, when?” Sango asked.
“Next month,” I said, “On November 28th.”
“Hmm, what are you guys doing?” Kagome asked.
“Uhh…” Hana and I said simultaneously. “We haven't exactly decided that yet.”
Miroku, Sango, and Kagome exchanged glances, “Okay.”
Miroku, Sango, and Kagome exchanged glances, “Okay.”
“What was that you guys did just now?” Hana asked.
“N-nothing!” Kagome said, “Nothing at all.”
“Nothing you two need to worry about anyway…oh yeah, Aoi-chan…” Miroku said addressing me.
“Yeah?”
“Congratulations for all that happened on Friday. It's a shame you and Kusao-kun didn't get anywhere though…”
I knew Miroku was referring to Bankotsu since Kusao was his last name, but I didn't understand exactly what he was trying to say…
“What do you mean Miroku?” I asked curiously.
Sango smacked Miroku in the back of his head, “Honestly, can you think of anything else?!”
I was still confused, “What does he mean though?”
“Don't worry about it. You're pure-minded Aoi, and you need to stay that way…”
I just nodded at Sango's comment for lack of a better action as I watched her drag Miroku away. Kagome quickly waved at me and Hana and ran off after them.
“I don't think they're coming back for a while.” Hana said.
“Me neither, should we go to class now?”
“Yeah, let's do that.” So with that Hana and I walked to our homeroom class.
Later that day around lunchtime…
Sesshomaru's POV (YAY.)
That day I decided to skip lunch in order to work on a very important research paper that was due for one of my classes. As I was walking to the library I was surprised to see Hana walk into step next to me.
“Hana…” I said.
She looked up at me and smiled, “I'm Aoi.”
“Oh, sorry.” I don't know what I apologized for, they looked exactly alike, it was a simple mistake.
“Well anyway I'm glad that I found you, I wanted to talk to you about something, where are you going exactly?” She asked me.
“The library.” I said.
“Mind if I join you?” She asked.
Yes, I mind a lot actually. “No I don't mind, follow me.” Even though half of the school's population thought that I was a complete jerk and that I couldn't do anything near close to magnanimous, it wasn't entirely true. I couldn't possibly be mean to this girl who had done nothing to me, especially since she looked completely identical to the girl that I…never mind.
When Aoi and I got to the library, I opened the door for her.
“Aw, thank you Sesshy-chan…” she said.
“Don't call me that. Ever Again. Ever,” I said to her.
She looked rather offended. “No need to get all touchy, I was just trying to be friendly.”
“Well act friendly by calling me `Sesshomaru' or `Sesshomaru-kun',” I said finally walking in behind her, “If it's not my real name, then don't address me by it. And don't call me chan either; I'm not that stupid girl you and your sister always hang around with. What's her name again? Kaname-?”
“Her name's Kagome and she's not-!” The librarian shushed Aoi because she was talking too loud, “Her name's Kagome and she's not stupid! She just, doesn't use her head all the time…”
“Whatever.” I said.
As I searched for books on the Edo period I sensed Aoi following behind me like a shadow. It was bothering me so much that I just had to ask, “Do you mind, honestly?”
“Yes I do mind.” She said matter-of-factly.
I gave her the most menacing glare I could muster, naturally it didn't work.
“Down Scruffles, Sit!” She said laughing.
If there was anything I hated most in the world, it was dog jokes. I am a dog demon but was it so necessary to poke fun at it with every opportunity?
“What do you want from me?” I sighed.
“I already told you, I want to talk to you!”
“It can't wait until another time?”
“The sooner the better.”
I could already tell that this girl was not going to give in anytime soon. So I abandoned all hope of getting a started on my report and found a table that Aoi and I could sit at.
“So, what may I ask, is just so important that you have to interrupt my research for it?” I said sitting down.
“Sesshy…I mean Sesshomaru-kun, when is this thing due anyway?” she asked, sitting down after me.
“Next week,” I said, “Why?”
“Man,” she rolled her eyes, “I was just wondering why you were so pressed to finish this thing. Sesshomaru, do you realize how much time you have to do this thing? Just chill out for a second and listen to what I have to say.”
“Whatever, continue please…” I waved her along.
She looked like she was close to hitting me; I really wish she would have, but whatever. She started talking as she regained her composure, “Okay, about my sister, she told me what happened between you two.”
I paused for a second, “And, what of it?” I asked.
“Well, I was just wondering, you do like Hana, right?”
“…Yes I do. Why would I be talking to her if I didn't like her?”
Aoi rolled her eyes again; I hoped that they would get stuck in her head, but of course that didn't happen.
“You know what I mean! Do you like her as a more than a friend?”
I'd been hoping that I would get to avoid this kind of conversation. I guess luck was just not on my side that day.
“Yes…can I go now? You got the answer to your question.”
“No, I'm not done with you yet! Why haven't you told her that you like her?”
Man this girl was persistent, “I'm assuming she told you everything that happened?”
“Yeah.”
“And about the little girl?”
She looked confused, “I didn't hear anything about a little girl, but you're gonna tell me aren't you? Tell me!”
Damn, “Don't even worry about it; it's a story for another day.”
Aoi made puppy-dog eyes at me, thinking that it would actually convince me to tell my best kept secret.
“That doesn't work on me Hanamori-san; I already told you that it was a story for another day.”
She folded her arms in frustration, “I had a feeling it would work. I mean you are technically a dog so…”
“You little bitch…”
“What was that?” She asked sarcastically.
“Nothing.” I wasn't going to start a confrontation in a library.
“I didn't think it was. Anyway what were you saying before your implication about the little girl?”
It finally sunk in that I was never going to get out of this so I told Aoi exactly what was on my mind. “Basically what I was getting at was, I have a reputation to uphold. If I told Hana how I felt about her, the gossip would spread faster than wildfire and my reputation would be totally ruined.”
Aoi looked like she was going to hit me again, “That is so shallow.”
“There's more to it than that,” I continued, “I'm not supposed to like humans at all. I'm supposed to be the hostile youkai that doesn't take crap from people. If I were to start going out with Hana, it would seem like I was turning soft. Understand?”
“I understand…that you are totally unbelievable! Hana likes you so much, maybe even loves you-”
“And I love her too, but like I said there's nothing I can do about it…”
“HA! You admit it!” Aoi got silenced once again by the librarian. Lowering her voice, she continued talking, “Look, regardless of whatever image you are trying to uphold for yourself, it's obvious that you and Hana have something going…”
I suddenly became completely disinterested in what Aoi was saying and turned my attention to the floor.
“Look at me when I'm talking to you, Lassie!”
“Say one more dog joke wench, I will cut you!”
For a good couple of seconds we sat there glaring at each other with complete animosity.
“Alright, I have no more business here. My whole purpose was to try to convince you to tell Hana you liked her and clearly that's not gonna happen anytime soon since you have to be this way. Later Sesshomaru, discussion terminated.”
As I watched Aoi walk out of the library I was flooded with relief that that conversation was over. However for the rest of the day, her words repeated over and over again in my mind like a broken record.
Hana likes you so much, maybe even loves you…
Kagome's POV
At lunch, Miroku, Sango and I decided to discuss the twins' birthday. After making sure they weren't around, we started talking.
“So…what do you girls have in mind for their little shenanigan?” Miroku said.
“Well I was thinking we could throw them a big secret b-day bash!” I said.
“Kagome I think we all had in mind that it would be secret but the real question is what kind of party would it be? It can't just be any party…it has to be special. It is their sweet 16 after all.” Sango said.
“Yeah…but before we can discuss the logistics we have to figure out where it's going to be.” I said.
We all thought for a moment and then suddenly Miroku spoke up. “My dad's club!”
“What?! There's no way we're having their party at a nightclub. What if some random guy tries to hit on them? What if some fight broke out? Everything would be ruined. Not to mention there's a possibility of people getting tipsy…” Sango said immediately objecting.
“First of my all, dad's club has top security so there are no fights and second of all we can rent the place out for the party. No one else would be allowed to enter except for invited guests.” Miroku said.
“I dunno…” Sango said, obviously still not liking the idea.
“C'mon Sango. That place is perfect. It's got a big dance floor, great speakers, and more then enough space to set up decorations. Besides we could put away all the alcoholic beverages so getting any wasted guests won't be a problem.”
“I'm gonna have to agree with Miroku on this one. That's just the type of place we need.” I said.
Sango just turned her head and said “Fine.”
“Well then! Since we've come to an agreement on the location I'll ask my dad about renting the place for the party.” Miroku said.
“Good and now that we have an idea of where the party is going to be we need to figure out what exactly is going to happen. We need something that will give this party its edge…you know make it different.” I said.
We all went into thinking mode again but this time Sango spoke up. “A band!”
“A band?” Miroku and I said.
“Yeah we can hire a band to play at their party.”
“That's a great idea but there are two problems with that…1) most of Hana and Aoi's favorite bands are on tour right now…”
Sango interrupted me and said “They would have to be on tour near their birthday…”
“…and, like I was saying, 2) I'm not sure where the band would perform.”
“Well that wouldn't be a problem. The club has a stage. I mean, where else do you think all those famous singers and bands perform?”
“Famous people perform at your dad's club?!” I said excitedly.
“Yep…most famous nightclub in Tokyo. Not to mention that other celebrities hang out there too.”
Sango waved her hand and said “Alright we're getting off subject. But anyway it's obvious the whole band thing is out of the question…”
“Not necessarily. We can still do it. ” Miroku said.
“How?” Sango asked. “Kagome already said that their favorite bands are gone and we're not going to hire some gangster rapper with some booty shakin dancers to replace them.”
“For your information Sango, that's not what I had in mind…though that would be cool…but anyway I was going to say that we could hire Bankotsu.”
She blinked for a moment and then said “Oh! That's right! We could hire him.”
I blinked, still not getting what they were talking about. “What about Bankotsu?” I asked.
Sango and Miroku looked at me like I was stupid.
“What?!” I said.
“Kagome sweetie Bankotsu is in a band.” Sango said.
“Really? I mean, oh yeah I knew that….” I said laughing nervously.
“Sure you did but anyway…they may not be big and famous but they've gotten a few gigs at several places in Tokyo. I've heard them play and they rock.”
“Yeah, and to top that the girls haven't heard him play so that would definitely be a surprise.”
“Cool. So…We can ask him about his band playing at the party but of course we have to mention that he can't say anything to Aoi.” I said.
“Yeah. The girls are really going to like it. Especially Aoi…having her bf playing at her sweet 16.” Sango said.
Bf…I thought. Inuyasha could have been…
I looked down and sighed. It got quiet until I heard Sango whisper “Are you okay Kagome?”
“I'm fine.” I lied. I was fine until I thought about him…
Suddenly the bell rang and I stood up and turned my back to them as I was about to leave.
“Well…I'll let you know when we can further discuss the party.” I then walked away not letting them ask me any more questions or see me cry.
Sesshomaru's POV
After the little confrontation with Aoi I was hoping I wouldn't run into her counterpart. But then I realized that it'd be futile to wish such a thing because I had International Foods with her. I still thought I'd be able to avoid her but by some cursed fate we got partnered up. We mostly worked in silence. Hana had cut the onions while I was peeling the potatoes. At one moment I just so happened to glance at her and I gasped when I saw tears falling from her eyes. “Hana? Are you…?”
She looked at me and said “I'm not crying if that's what you think. It's just these damn onions.”
“Well I can cut them.” I offered.
“No. I'm fine.” She then turned back to what she was doing and wiped her eyes with her apron. Was it just the onion? I thought. Could she still be bothered by what I told her? I hope not… When I had said that I was unsure of how I felt I actually meant that I was unsure of how I would tell her…I do want to tell her the truth but…I just can't…
I was suddenly brought out of my thoughts when I heard Hana say “Ow! Dammit!”
I looked to see that she had cut her finger and there was blood flowing out of the cut. I grabbed her finger and put it in my mouth, sucking the blood off of it. “That's what you get for not paying attention.” I said as I put a bandage from our station's first aid kit on it. Hana gasped and snatched her finger from me. “Why did you do that?” she asked.
“Well I couldn't just let you bleed. Now if you don't mind I think I'll cut the onions.” I was happy that she didn't object. I really didn't want her cutting her finger again.
As we continued what we were doing something suddenly came to mind.
“Hana?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for not mentioning Rin to your sister.”
She looked at me, probably wondering why I was saying that but she just went back to what she was doing and said “You're welcome…”
After school…
Hana's POV
On the way to the car I told Aoi about the awkward situation between Sesshomaru and me. She was mostly surprised because she didn't know that he took a cooking class but other than that she really didn't seem all that interested. I noticed she seemed a bit distant when I brought him up and when I asked her what was up she just said `nothing'. I gave her a look but just decided to go to another subject.
“Anyway…I'm really looking forward to our birthday.” I said happily.
“Yeah its next month but its still not too far off. We've got to think of something succulent we can do…”
Man, Aoi and her saying succulent, it's like her favorite word or something,
“It is after all the first official b-day we're going to spend together.” Aoi said.
“Yeah but right now I'm mostly thinking about the Halloween dance. Have you thought about what you're going to be yet?” I asked.
“Not really. What about you?”
I smiled and closed my eyes. “I want to be a beautiful maiden of light, a celestial being that soars the skies on her beautiful white wings.”
“Uh is it possible to summarize that in less words?”
I laughed and said “An angel.”
“Oh right. Well you'd be a cute angel.” Aoi said smiling at me.
“Thanks. You know…you'd be a cute angel too.”
“Really? Well…we can't both be angels. I mean we're twins but…”
I thought for a moment and said “I have an idea!”
“What?”
“I can be an angel of light and you can be an angel of darkness,” I proposed, “So that way we'll be the same but different at the same time.”
“Hm…I kinda like that. But…where am I going to get a costume? I did kind of wait `til the last minute to think about getting one.”
I winked at her and said “You leave that to me, I got you!”
Later on that night…
Aoi's POV
After finishing my homework I decided to call Bankotsu. After about three rings someone picked up the phone but it wasn't him. “Hey! Kusao residence! Who's speaking?”
“Um this is Aoi. Is this Jakotsu?” I asked trying not to laugh.
“Yes honey it's me! How have you been?”
“Fine, and you?”
“I am just fabulous. Now I'm assuming you want to speak to Bankotsu?”
“Yes please.”
“Alright hold on a minute.”
I heard moving around and yelling…
“Kotsu-kichi, your woman wants to talk to you…!”
“Jakotsu, this is an apartment, you don't need to yell!”
“Aoi?” I heard Bankotsu say when he picked up the phone.
“Hi sweetie!” I said happily.
“Hey, how's my favorite girl doing?”
“Aw, I'm fine…”
“Ew, no hetero…” A random voice said.
“Jakotsu get off the phone!”
Click
“Aoi, please excuse my older brother. He has a habit of listening in on my phone calls.”
“Oh it's okay,” I said laughing, “I like your brother already and I haven't even met him yet!”
“Believe me, you won't like him when you meet him. He has like, gynophobia or something…”
I couldn't believe Bankotsu just said a word that I didn't know the meaning of. “Gynophobia?”
“Oh,” he laughed “It means he's afraid of girls. My brother is weird.”
I started laughing again, I continued talking when I regained my composure, “Well anyway, I wanted to continue our conversation that got cut short earlier today.”
“Oh you mean Hana? Yeah what was up with her, she was fine one minute and then she wanted to get all…depressing and emo.”
“Yeah, that was because,” I took a deep breath before I continued, “Okay, she likes Sesshomaru and…”
“Wait, Sesshomaru?” Bankotsu interrupted me, “That blue-blood, dog demon who goes around the school thinkin' he's the shit?”
“Bankotsu!” I really thought that the comment he made was unnecessary.
“Sorry, continue…”
“Anyway, she likes him but he won't tell her exactly how he feels about her. So it's like, when she saw us together earlier…it made her upset. Do you get what I'm trying to say?”
“I guess so. Man that sucks.”
“I know…”
The long, awkward silence of death then ensued. “Great, now a gay baby is gonna be born.” I said.
“What the fuck?” Bankotsu said.
“Stop that!” I told him even though it didn't matter that much to me how colorful his language was. “Anyway, there's a saying that for every awkward silence, there is a gay baby born into the world. So now some little boy who would've grown to like me will now grow to like you.” I said.
“Just what I need, more Jakotsu's running around…”
“Oh yeah, you know that Halloween shindig going on at the school? Are you going?” I asked changing the subject.
“Yeah, why?”
“What are you going as?”
“Well…are you going?”
“Yes…”
“I guess you'll find out then, now won't you?”
This boy seriously knew how to drive me crazy. Goodness knows I loved him to death though.
“Oh, fine!” I made a fake pouty noise.
“Kotsu-kichi, Big Brother needs to use the phone. Get off, please and thank you.” Jakotsu's voice interrupted our conversation yet again.
Click.
“So he couldn't have walked ten steps to tell me directly that he needed to use the phone? Wow…”
“Mm, so I guess I'll talk to you later Kotsu-chan?”
Kotsu-chan, I like the sound of that! I thought.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“Okay well, bye!”
“Aishiteru Aoi-chan.”
I was glad he couldn't see me over the phone because I was grinning like an idiot when he said that, “I love you too, Kotsu-chan.”
“See ya later.”
Click.
Lying down on my bed I couldn't help but wonder what he was going to be…A knight? A prince? Guess I would just have to wait and see…
