Chapter 22: Kikyo's Insidious Plot
Aoi's POV
“Why is it that a week of no school always goes faster than a full week of school?” I asked, banging my head against my locker the Monday after spring break.
“Ditto Twin,” Hana agreed next to me. “But look at the bright side, we had fun didn't we?”
“Well, yeah!” I said, putting my school shoes on, “I mean, I was able to go back to Okinawa for a while...and Bankotsu and I got back together...it was perfect!”
“Yeah, not to mention I got to meet Sesshomaru's parents.”
“For real?” I asked, “How did that turn out?”
“Oh it turned out great!” Hana said, all smiles, “They were sort of intimidating at first, but I really warned up to them. I swear, Aoi, you have to see his mother! She looks exactly like him! It's like, turn Sesshomaru into a girl, and that's what you get...”
“Ha...nice...” I laughed, “What else happened with ya while I was gone?” I leaned into her, listening intently.
Hana closed her locker and smiled, “Well, I made peace with my dad!”
“Oh my god, are you serious?” I almost whispered. I could barely believe it but at the same time I was so happy for Hana.
“I know! I couldn't believe it at first either. When he just apologized out of nowhere...I didn't know what to think. But I found it in my heart to forgive him for everything. Even what happened three years ago...”
“Oh,” I said, “Wait, what happened three years ago?”
Hana had an expression on her face as if she'd just said something that she hadn't meant to. She quickly changed the subject, “Are you done at your locker? We should start heading upstairs...”
“Um, alright,” I said, going along. Once we got upstairs, Hana went back to our conversation about spring break, “What about that party that I put together at the last minute for you and Bankotsu? Nice, huh?”
“Oh, yeah, that was really nice.”
Yeah, it was nice; Random and unnecessary too, if you ask me, but still nice. I'd never exactly had a `getting-back-together' party thrown for me before.
“Not to mention that cake looked delicious!” Hana said, “Too bad it was only for you and Bankotsu though...”
“Yeah, it was good. And you're fat behind would be the one to comment about the food of all things...!”
“Oh, there's Sesshomaru!”
Wouldn't you know it, Lo and behold; Sesshomaru Takahashi in all of his fluffiness graced the halls with his golden-eyed, silver-haired presence. Hana looked at me and gave me sort of a pleading look, but didn't say anything. I didn't have to read her mind to figure out what she wanted.
“Oh fine, I'll go,” I said with a fake pout, “Tell Sesshy I said `hi' when you catch him. And remember, no hickeys!”
“Shut up!”
Sesshomaru's POV
Once I saw Aoi leave Hana by herself, I started making my way over towards her. Goodness knows I would not have been able to have an actual conversation with Hana if her bothersome sister was hanging about.
When Aoi was gone, Hana ran over to me and embraced me tightly.
“Sessho-chan, I missed you!” Hana said, like she had not seen me all spring break.
I simply hugged her back and said “But I just saw you day before yesterday, not to mention we spent nearly the entire spring break together.”
Hana smiled up at me and giggled. “I know. But you know I can't stand to be apart from you, even for a day.”
“Developing abandonment issues, are we?”
“Maybe...” she said hugging me tighter, nearly cutting off my circulation.
After we separated I grabbed her hand and said “You know you don't have to worry about me leaving you.”
Hana smiled at me and said “I know...”
I briefly smiled back before we proceeded to walk to class, hand in hand.
When we were halfway there, Hana and I heard a cry of desperation. I looked around and saw a girl with crutches and a cast on her right foot. She seemed to be having trouble carrying her books.
“Maybe we should go help her, Hanako!” I said, pointing out the girl to Hana. But her face contorted in disgust.
“Do you know who that is?” She asked, “Look closer...”
I did as she said, and I noticed that the girl was Kikyo Hidaka. Inuyasha's...interesting (for lack of a better term) ex-girlfriend. I remembered that she and Hana did not exactly get along that well, and realized the reason for Hana's reaction.
“I know you two don't get along that well. But still Hanako, it would be wrong to just leave her there knowing she needed some help.”
“Sessho-chan,” Hana said giving me a skeptical look, “I'm all for chivalry and all that. And I know you always want to be a gentleman, but you don't have to be that way with all the girls, especially her! Besides, even though it is wrong to not help someone on crutches with their books, it's also wrong to try to ruin your cousin's life, manipulate the emotions of people you barely know, start terrible rumors about people...”
“Okay I see your point. But still, two wrongs don't make a right.”
She simply rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah, and two rights don't make a left, your point, love?”
I sighed, fed up with her stubbornness. “How about this, you go ahead to class while I help Kikyo and then I'll be there when I'm done with her.”
Hana was quiet for a moment, probably thinking over my `compromise'. Finally after a moment she spoke. “Well...although I dislike the idea of you being within five feet of that thing I suppose it's alright if I'm not around...just come as soon as you're done, okay?”
I kissed her on the lips and said “I will.”
She smiled, delighted by my kiss and said “Okay!”
She began to walk away, that smile still plastered on her face, but it went away when she glanced back at Kikyo. It seemed she disliked that girl as much as I disliked Inuyasha, which meant that she must have really done some really horrible things. But I felt obligated to help her.
I walked over to her. At the moment she was currently kicking and cursing her books on the floor with her good foot. I cleared my throat, grabbing her attention. She looked up at me, obviously surprised.
“Takahashi-san...” she whispered.
“I am assuming you need help.” I said.
She just blinked for a moment before she smiled at me. Even I had to admit, something was a bit off about her smile. It was almost as if she was planning something...but I shook that thought away. Maybe I was just overanalyzing it...
“I do actually. Ah would you...?” she asked innocently with her finger on her lips like a little girl.
“Ah sure...that is why I came over.” I said as I kneeled on the ground to pick up her books. I stacked them on top of each other.
“Oh Takahashi-san you're such a gentleman.” Kikyo said, almost flirtatiously, as I stood up with both my books and hers in my hands.
“Thank you. Now would you tell me where your class is?” I said quickly, disregarding her compliment. I didn't miss that sultry sound in her voice. Without really saying so, I wanted to make it clear that I was just helping her just to be a gentleman.
“Well, you go down this hallway, and then go all the way down the stairs...”
“But, that's where the boiler room is...” I said.
Kikyo's gaze shifted away from my face and she quickly said, “It's a mechanics class!”
Her behavior aroused my curiosity, but I didn't comment on it. I simply walked with her to...the boiler room.
When we finally got to the bottom floor, it was so hot I felt as if I were going to melt. I sniffed the air, but all I could smell was sulfur and iron. So I decided to ask, “Hidaka-san, where exactly is this class of yours?”
She stopped walking, looked back at me and grinned. “Well Takahashi-san, there is no class.”
I raised an eyebrow in suspicion, “What are you talking about?”
“I dragged you down here because I wanted to talk to you without any interruptions.” She said.
“You just wanted to talk to me?” I asked, even more suspicious. “Couldn't we have done so in a more proper location? Just what do you want to talk about?”
“Well Takahashi-san...or Sesshomaru rather, I'll cut to the chase. I need you.”
My eyebrows furrowed. Why was she talking to me like she knew me? “For what?” I asked in a more serious tone.
“Well here's the deal...my father's company is having some financial problems. Though we're pretty comfortable right now, it's only a matter of time before my father's methods of keeping us `afloat' stop working.”
“I'm sorry to hear that but what does that have to do with me?” I could not quite catch what point she was getting at.
“Everything actually, you see, you're apart of a wealthy family who's doing very well right now. Your father's company is one of the most well known in Japan and at one point so was mine. But lately we've been losing business, thus our profits have plummeted. As I said, my father has found ways to keep us living a wealthy lifestyle but when those ways no longer work, we'll be on the streets. I won't allow that.”
“Again, what does this have to do with me?” I was starting to get really irritated.
“I just told you, everything. You see, if our fathers' companies combine, then business will be good again and I won't have to worry about becoming poor. But I know that our fathers won't agree to such an arrangement since their companies are rivals so I've found another method of doing it...”
“And that would be?” I asked, waiting to hear what she was going to say.
Her grin grew wider as she responded “Marry me.”
Surprisingly, all I did was laugh. She had to be playing me for a fool. “Well Kikyo, it isn't that you are not a...lovely young woman....but to be honest I do not have any type of feelings for you. My heart belongs to Hana Miyashita. Do not be mistaken, I do sympathize with your situation. But I do not desire to go through such means to help your family's company. Especially for such a selfish reason as wanting to continue living an extravagant lifestyle.”
She didn't seem fazed by that answer. In fact that annoying smirk was still plastered on her face. “I figured you'd say that. I know you and that girl are...close...”
“Her name is Hana...”
“Whatever...but anyway, I have a solution to that problem.”
“Oh, is that so?” I said matching her arrogant tone, “Well how can there be a solution to a nonexistent problem?”
“Well, I won't beat around the bush. Simply put, if you decide not to marry me...well...I know people...and they'll have Hana tasting bullets before you know it.”
Once again, I just laughed. I knew the bitch had lost her mind, maybe she was still a bit shaken up from whatever accident put her in a cast, or maybe it was the fact that we had been standing in a boiler room for fifteen minutes. Either way, I knew she wasn't serious.
“Oh I'm very serious Sesshomaru.” She said, almost as if she read my mind. “Don't test me...if you do you'll be looking forward to some funeral arrangements...”
If she weren't a female, she would be dead herself by now...I thought. I didn't want to take her threats seriously. But, did I have a choice? Did I really wish to risk Hana's life over something like this?
I knew the answer was `no'.
“Hidaka, I've heard some things about you. And I usually don't believe every single thing I hear about someone that I do not necessarily know that well. But after this conversation with you, I can say that you must be the most conniving, superficial wench that I've ever met...”
“Thank you...” she responded as if she heard the exact opposite of what I actually said to her. I sighed, “But despite that, I cannot risk the life of someone I care about over your irrational threats. Therefore...I'm going to accept your offer...”
She pressed her body uncomfortably close to mine and whispered, “I knew you would see things my way...Sessho-chan...”
I growled with my eyes clenched shut. This was not happening...
Kikyo moved, only a little so that she was looking me dead in the face. She was grinning again, yet this time in absolute satisfaction. “I'm so happy you're going to marry me...but you'll have to do more then that if you want to assure Hana's safety.
“And that would be?” I asked, my eyes now open.
“Before the wedding, which we'll have to set a date for, I want you to tear Hana apart...mentally I mean. Kill her with your words...crush her heart. Make her an emotional wreck. All the while you will flirt with me and act like you love me.”
Which is the total opposite of what I feel...
“So how exactly will I go about doing this? You're going to give me some drugs? Otherwise I could never act like I love you...”
“Well you'll have to unless you want Hana's dead body on your conscience.”
I growled again and said “And just how will doing this benefit your father's company?”
“It won't.” Kikyo said with a smile. “But it's the perfect way to get back at Hana. In case you missed the memo...I hate her...even more than you hate me.”
“I don't see how that's possible since at this point I would say my hate for you is unrivaled.”
Kikyo once again closed the space between us and whispered in my ear “Well that doesn't matter...who knows you might actually grow to love me.”
“I doubt that as there is no possible way...”
Kikyo placed her finger on my lips and said “Enough talking sexy...let's just seal the deal and be done with it.”
“Seal the deal?”
“Oh you know what I'm talking about.”
I growled. I did...unfortunately and before I could even question how exactly she knew about that, I felt her lips against mine.
That was the worst feeling ever...
