Chapter 3:
Kagome lay wide awake in her bed. The splattering of rain drops against her window could be clearly heard throughout her bedroom. The sound was the whole reason why she was up in the first place and sleep seemed to escape her. Instead she thought about the events yesterday.
She remembered her brother's far off expression as he continued to stare at her after the gust of wind had past. His eyes were so full of wisdom and serenity, no matter how much of a child he really was. He reminded her so much of Miroku.
Speaking of the pervert, her thoughts drifted back to her past memories with him. The one she was most fond of, however, was when she first met him, Miroku Yukimura, her next best friend.
*flash back*
Running through the shrine grounds, the 10 year old raven haired girl made her way to the Goshinboku. The New Year was going to start and she decided to spend the first hours of it under the confines of the tree itself. She loved that tree, it made her safe…protected.
As she began to near the heart of the shrine, she stopped short, noticing two dark figures in the moonlight. Two boys were under Goshinboku, talking to each other in hushed voices. Curiosity getting the best of her she crept her way closer, wanting to know who they were and why they were talking in hushed voices.
As she neared close enough, she could make out the features of one of the boys. She recognized him almost immediately. She saw him almost every day because he was training on becoming a monk at their shrine. He was two years older than her, had short black hair pulled back in a small ponytail at the nape of his neck and had girls tripping over themselves just to talk to him.Miroku Yukimura.
`Who is the other boy, though? I've never seen him before.' Since she couldn't see his face too clearly so, she decided to take another step forward. Before she could though the mystery boy looked up and caught her.
He was gone before she could blink. He ran away so fast, she contemplated if he had actually been really there in the first place.
Wandering what spooked off his friend so easily, he looked around, until he too spotted the young girl. Staring at her, he took in her appearance. She looked very beautiful in her traditional miko clothing. Why did she look so familiar? `That's right.' He thought. `She's friends with my lovely Sango.'
That still didn't stop him from approaching the girl with his trademark smile. “Good evening, Lady Kagome. What brings you out here so late in the night; shouldn't you be with the rest of your guests in the festivities?”
Blushing prettily she replied, “I simply wanted to spend my first few hours of New Year's in my favorite spot, only to find you here.”
After a long pause, Kagome let her curiosity get the better of her. “Who was that boy you were talking to earlier?”
“Oh, him? He's just an old friend of mine. We haven't seen each other in a while and decided to catch up a little. I apologize for his abrupt departure, he's very shy.” He said while stepping closer to her, only a foot away from her now. A low warning growl was directed toward the monk, but he ignored it. Kagome didn't seem to notice though.
“Oh. I understand.” Kagome managed to say nervously. `Why is he standing so close to me?'
“Lady Kagome…I want to ask you something serious.” Taking her silence to continue, he grabbed her hand, ignoring his friend's growl again and asked, “Would you do me the honor of bearing my child?”
Kagome looked at him as if he lost his mind, as her mind was going a mile a minute. A loud growl interrupted her thoughts as a rock flew out of nowhere and hit the `monk' in the back of his head. Looking back at the tree, he smiled sheepishly. Turning back to Kagome, he gave her an apologetic smile.
“I guess my friend seems to be quite fond of you…” Scratching the back of his head, he continued, “He's never interrupted my advances before.” Looking back towards to the Goshinboku to let his friend know he was directing it towards him.
“Keh! That's because most of the time you made sure I wasn't around. I swear Miroku, your gonna mess with the wrong girl and your gonna get a beating for a life time.” Voiced out the boy the first time since their conversation started.
“Actually, I met the right girl that will give me a beating of a life time.” He answered, sighing dreamily.
“What are you going on about now, lecher?”
“Sango…” was all he said.
Scoffing, his mysterious friend replied sarcastically, “Well good luck with that. Look I'm gonna get outta here. I better not catch you making any moves on her, lech.”
“Yeah, Yeah. Whatever you say, Yash.” He answered back, knowing full well that his friend was already gone.
Turning back to Kagome, who still stared curiously at the Goshinboku, he spoke, “Well, now that he's gone. Why don't we head back in?”
Looking at him suspiciously, she answered, “What did he mean by moves? Your not going to do what you did to Sango today to me, are you?”
“Of course not, Kags.” He said nervously. “I would hate to have to go through the consequences, especially from an angry Sango and half-demon.”
Believing his words, she turned around heading back, Miroku catching up quickly after. Not once had he laid a hand on her. `I guess he really meant it when he didn't want to feel Sango and his friend's wrath.' She thought, smiling to herself. She could tell, this friendship was going to be well worth the trouble.
*End flashback*
A loud buzzing interrupted her thoughts, picking up her phone she looked at her caller I.D. `Sango' along with her picture were featured on the face of her phone.
She pressed the green button and greeted, “Ohayo gozaimasu.”
“Ohayo, Kagome-chan.” The voice answered on the other side. “I called to ask if you needed a ride to school today. Miroku offered.”
“Sure, as long as the pervert keeps his hands to himself.” She said jokingly.
“Of course he will, Kags. He knows full well what will happen to him, and if he doesn't…I'll give him a reminder.” She laughed.
`I heard that' could be heard Sango's side of the phone as both girls laughed.
“Alright, I'll be ready in 20 minutes. See you soon.” Hanging up her phone, she went to take a shower and get dressed before her friends arrived.
After her 10 minute shower, she quickly decided on what to wear. A tight happy bunny tee saying `I did it but I'm blaming you” and a pair of low-rise dark blue jeans, fitted the teen nicely. Honking could be heard from outside and she quickly slipped on her shoes and grabbed her backpack.
Opening the door, she greeted her friends who greeted her in return. As they drove she noticed that they weren't heading to the school and looked at the driver curiously.
Noticing her questioning gaze in his rear-view mirror, Miroku answered her silent question. “We're going to pick up one of my very close friends from his apartment. Apparently he's been sent to go back to school.” Laughing mentally, he thought about how true that statement really was.
“Oh, did he drop out?” asked Kagome innocently.
“You could say that.” He replied, not saying anything else.
After that statement, the car ride became silent. Looking at her reflection in the glass window, she thought about Miroku's friend in her memory. Was he the same one? She didn't even know what happened to that boy after that night. Miroku never mentioned him, so she never brought him up.
Feeling the car coming to a stop, they pulled up in front of an apartment complex. Flashing his I.D. to the guard, Miroku continued his way down the road to park in a stall in front of one of the apartments.
`This is his apartment? Looks more like a house to me.” Kagome thought humorously.
********
`Damn Sesshomaru. Sending me back to school! Of all places the stupid thing had to be, it had to be in a goddamn school!'
It appeared that the rumors surrounded one high school, Saitama High School. He also remembered the rumor saying a miko was in the possession of it. There were so many mikos in Japan and he had to look for one.
`But which one is it?!' he thought angrily.
Thinking back to the other night, again, he remembered the miko he encountered. Her power was practically radiating off of her, yet she didn't seem aware of it. Many times, he thought if she was the one. But he had no proof. `Besides,' he thought, `I searched her whole room…there was nothing. But where did that power come from?' It was close he knew, but he just couldn't seem to grasp it.
Having enough of that plaguing thought for the day, he let his focus drift back to the miko, more at the memory of her almost naked than anything else.
“BEEEEEEP!”
Flattening his ears to his head, he growled at having his thoughts interrupted by his stupid friend. He was going to make sure the `monk' paid for that. Still growling he grabbed his wallet and keys, locking his door as he made his way out.
Glaring at his friend through the window, he opened the door and hopped into the back seat.
Not even bothering to greet anyone, he yelled, “What the fuck is your problem, lech?”
Driving out of the apartment complex and on to the road, Miroku said, “I was right, wasn't I?” looking at Sango, ignoring his friend's comment.
“Hey lech! I'm talking to you.”
“Inuyasha, if I were you I wouldn't be talking to my friend. Instead I would be talking to the lovely lady sitting next to me.” He replied, while winking at Kagome in the rear-view mirror. Sango slapped him, while giving him a playful glare.
Annoyed, he looked to his left to see who this lady was, shocked to see brilliant sapphire eyes looking back at him. He instantly schooled his emotions, though, showing one of nonchalant.
Kagome looked at him equally as strange but more so as to whom he was. He looked familiar but she couldn't place her finger on it. Studying him with her eyes, she looked him up and down.
Waist-length ebony locks cascaded down his shoulders, she never knew a girlish style could look so sexy on a guy. His body was covered in a red and black collared shirt with dark, blue baggy jeans. He wore a pair of black shoes with red letters on them. `More like tagging', she thought, `I wonder what it says'. His eyes caught her attention though, they were a deep violet. But she could have sworn she seen them before.
He was grateful of the concealment spell that he cast upon himself a little earlier. Although he appeared to be human, he still had the natural abilities of his normal hanyou self.
Kagome didn't even realize he was staring at her too, he took that time to give her a once over. She looked sexy. No matter how innocent she looked in her tight tee and low-rise jeans, in his mind they were anything but innocent. He couldn't believe he didn't smell her scent from when he first entered the car. He loved her smell, not that he would admit that out loud. `Jasmine and vanilla.' He thought. Looking at her face, he realized she was still looking at him. Smirking he decided to break the ice.
“Do you like what you see?” he whispered huskily, so that none of their friends could hear.
Blushing at being caught, she turned her attention back to Sango, ignoring him completely throughout the rest of the ride.
He couldn't help but grin at how easily she became flustered. Where did that fiery temptress go? `I guess she won't show her true colors until later, after all, she doesn't have a clue as to who I am.' Luckily for him, she was human, so it would have been impossible for her to make out his features in the poor lighting of her bedroom.
Well, whatever, he still had to find out how she ended up in Miroku's car. So, he started to drill the `monk' with questions.
“Who's the wench, Miro?” asked Inuyasha rudely, ignoring the silent glare being directed at him from said `wench'.
Miroku took a dramatic intake in breath and grinned, “Why, Inuyasha, I would have thought you'd remember the girl you saved all those years ago.”
“Saved?! What the hell are you going on about now, lech?”
“Let me refresh your memory,” he began, “do you recall 7 years ago? When you hit me, rather hard I might add, in the back of the head with a rock?”
“So…What of it?” Inuyasha said impatiently. Miroku always tended to prolong the main point of a conversation.
“Remember the little girl you saved from my lecherous ways?”
Realization suddenly dawned on him and it was Kagome, this time, to answer the question.
“So, that was Inuyasha behind the Goshinboku that night? I always wondered what he looked like.” She replied, looking at him intently. “Why have I never seen you before?”
Glancing at Miroku in the corner of his eye, he saw him give a look of worry. `Shit. What the hell am I suppose to say?”
Thinking quickly, he answered, “I don't know, maybe your just blind, wench.”
“My name is Ka-Go-Me! You insensitive jerk!” she all but screamed at him.
Flattening his already covered ears to his head, he glared at her menacingly. “You don't need to yell! I'm right next to you…wench.” He added, smirking as her face went completely red.
Before she could comment, they both turned to hear the doors shut. Apparently they were so into their argument, they hadn't noticed they were parked in front of the school and their friends managed to escape without being noticed. Sighing, Kagome got out of the car. Turning back inside she leaned over and grabbed her back pack, chancing a peek at the grumpy boy.
“Are you just gonna sit there all day or are you gonna get out of the car?” she questioned, raising one of her eyebrows.
Grumbling, he got out of the car hastily and they started walking towards the school together. It was amazing they got into no more arguments and a comfortable silence settled between them.
“Well, well, well, if it isn't, Higurashi.”
Startled out of their stupor at the new voice, both set of eyes focused on the speaker. Kagome rolled her eyes and Inuyasha stared in shock, not even bothering to cover it up this time. `What the seven hells is she doing here?'
“It looks like you have another dog to follow you around, am I right Higurashi?” She spat.
Her name was Kikyou Yokoshima, also known as the biggest slut in school. She never took no for an answer. It was amazing she hadn't caught any diseases, not that she knew of anyway. She wore a tube top that was two sizes to small, a mini skirt and high stiletto heels, all black just like her heart. Kagome looked at her with disgust clearly written across her face.
“What's it to you, Kinky Ho. Jealous because all you have that follows you around are a bunch of bitches in heat?” Kagome retorted.
Her lackeys gasped at the insult. `There such a bunch of fakes.' She thought while taking a quick glance at the boy next to her. `What's the matter with him?' She continued to look at him questioningly.
Turning her attention to the mentioned dog, she said sweetly, “Inu-baby it's so nice to see you again.”
Much to Kagome's surprise he answered, “Fuck off, Kikyou. You sound more real when you're bitching.”
“Awww, don't be like that baby. You know you missed me.” She said seductively.
“Sorry, I don't take sloppy seconds.” He growled.
She chuckled, “Still angry about that, are we? I told you that we could still be friends.”
Sensing the anger radiating off of him, Kagome flipped Kikyou off and dragged the boy in the opposite direction. After getting a safe distance from the crazy bitch, she looked up at him curiously.
“Okay, not to be rude or anything, but how do you know Kinky…I mean, Kikyou?” she asked.
Ignoring her slip up, he answered without hesitation, “We have…I guess you could say, history, together.” After mumbling out `stupid two-timing…' he said nothing else.
“Well, alright.” She said, letting the subject drop for now. Besides, she had no right to pry. She only, officially, met him today. “Let's go find San and Miro. Why is Miro still here anyway?” she asked more to herself then to the boy, but got an answer anyway.
“He said something about interviewing for a position in the security.” He said, following the girl down the hall. `I guess Sesshomaru wants us both to be on the watch.'
`Why does Miroku want to be on security? He's never talked about it before.'
Not even bothering to think much more on it, she continued walking.
Inuyasha looked around, feeling like he was being watched. Looking back to Kagome, he realized she was walking ahead of him. “Oi, wench! Wait up!” he yelled, running after her.
*******
“The hanyou is here. pause. I don't know why he's here. pause. Look, I'll tell you more details later, I gotta go. pause. I love you too, baby.” She hung up her phone quickly and turned around to get back to her class before her teacher realized she was missing.
She was going to get to the bottom of this. Why would both the pervert and the hanyou be back in high school? There's only one reason. `The Shikon no Tama.' Was the last thought that drifted through her mind as her stiletto heels clicked down the hallway.
