Chapter 5: I’m 27

_______________________________________________________________ ________

Why the fuck could he not stop thinking about her?

That absolutely gorgeous woman he seems to be so unbelievably drawn to was out there somewhere and he didn’t even have her number!

Fuck!

Inuyasha sighed for the umpteenth time as he slumped pathetically against the counter of the café.

Both Sango and Miroku looked on with mild interest.

“What’s eating him?” Sango asked as she leaned towards Miroku so Inuyasha would not be able to hear.

“He fell in love with some girl, danced with her at the club, then she took off without giving him her number.” Miroku said as he paused his sweeping of the tile floor, leaning against the broom.

“He fell in love?! When?!” Sango asked slightly shocked.

“Uh, ok, he didn’t actually fall in love, but when they first met here, what I saw was like something out of one of those old romance movies. You know where its all love at first sight. They were both completely taken by each other.”

Aww! That is the cutest thing ever!” Sango squealed bit too loudly.

“Shh! Don’t let him here you. It’ll only make him feel worse about the whole thing. Especially after seeing him dance with her at the club…” He trailed off.

“Wait…danced with her?” Sango asked finally catching on.

“Yeah…I only said that like…twice.” He sweat dropped.

“Oh my god… you mean that totally hot chick! Damn, she was…wow.” Sango said slightly surprised.

“I take it you saw her then?” He asked leaning closer to her.

“Yeah I did. They looked good together too. I’m not usually into women, but I would not have said no to her..” She said as she sauntered away from him.

Miroku stared, mouth agape after Sango walked away wondering if he had heard her right.

Sango, and another woman.

Miroku looked up to the ceiling and held his hands together in a slight pray.

“Thank you!” He mouthed to the big guy as he ran after Sango.

“Oh Sango dearest! Please, do specify what you mean by, ‘I don’t usually go for women’…”

Kagome sighed for the umpteenth time as she walked quickly, tray in hand over to a table with their order.

Today was not going god at all.

First, she was late.

Second, Kouga had come in earlier in the morning, bugging her once again about a date.

Third, the guy at table three would not stop eye fucking her from the minute he walked in…with his girlfriend.

Placing the food down she smiled at the family before walking away, back towards the counter.

Looking around to see if anybody had walked in while she wasn’t looking, and sighed happily as she realised she might get a minutes break.

“Bad day?” A gentle voice called from behind her.

Turning around she was met with the happy face of Hojo, another guy who seemed to be playing for her affections.

“Yeah, I guess you could say that.” She replied as she leaned against the cool counter.

She revelled in the feeling of the cool counter top, hoping it would somehow ease her tensions.

“Well, listen. There’s this new place that just opened down the street. It’s French I think…well anyways how about we go to dinner?” He asked hopefully.

Kagome smiled forcefully as he asked for the millionth time for a date with her.

He was sweet and cute but that was about it.

“I cant.” She cringed as his face fell. “ I got hired full time at the club, and I’m working there every night from six till late. Sorry.”

“That’s okay ‘Gome. Maybe some other time when you have a night off.” His smile returned and he went back to what he was doing.

She had to hand it to him, he had optimism.

That was one thing she never really understood about humans.

Their unbelievable amounts of hope and faith they held.

You cant take everything away from them, destroy their homes, take their money, their families, everything, but you could never break that unbelievably strong spirit that they all seemed to carry.

It was fascinating really.

She was quickly brought out of her thoughts as she heard the bell of the door chime and looked up to see who had come in.

Her jaw dropped.

“Later dude.” Miroku called from behind Inuyasha as he made his way out the door of the café.

It had been a reasonably good day so far.

It was about five in the afternoon and he was planning on sleeping.

Alot.

But before that he had to meet up with his brother at a local diner to talk ‘business’.

Oh the joy.

Walking down the crowded street, trying to squeeze through the heap of people he stepped onto the road before looking both ways and running across.

Smiling slightly as he saw the diner he thanked god that he had gone the right way.

Of course he knew of the diner, but he never actually been in there.

Oh well.

Although, as he came closer to the smallish old fashioned diner he became slightly suspicious.

Why would his brother, the great Sesshomaru, the one who was all for high class dining and never settled for anything less than top notch want to meet him in a low key place like this?

Strange.

Pulling the heavy door open he heard the small bell above his head chime, announcing his entrance.

Looking around he smiled softly at the little booths and 50’s style set up.

A large juke box sat in the corner next to the bar where stools were lined up in a row in front.

How cute.

Not noticing that his brother had arrived yet he decided that maybe ordering a drink would go down nicely to waken him up a bit from his sleep deprived state.

Looking straight ahead his eyes bugged out wildly at the familiar face before him that seemed to be equally as surprised as him.

He shook his head slightly as he looked around him one more time, an odd look of confusion covering his face as if he couldn’t believe she was actually here.

He looked back at her again wearily, hoping to every known god there was that she was not some twisted concoction of his imagination.

He looked her over and noted the black dress trousers along with the red apron, her hair pulled back out of her face in a high ponytail.

So, she worked here?

Fuck yeah.

He took a quick step forward and noticed her face soften into a smile as the shock of seeing him cleared away.

Ok, this was just too freaky.

First, she meets him randomly at a coffee shop, then they reunite at a club in the middle of the night.

Now?

Now they find their way back to each other once again in the diner she worked in where she knows for a fact that he had never stepped foot in.

Weird.

Oh, and one more thing.

He looked fucking hot.

His surprised expression told her that he was just as confused as her.

Thank fuck! She wasn’t alone.

She noticed him take a step forward and quickly got rid of the shocked look and replaced it with a small smile.

“Uh…hi?” God she sounded stupid.

‘Uh…hi?!?!?’ What the fuck was that!?!

“Hi.” He replied sweetly as he continued coming closer to her.

“Fancy meeting you here.” She said quietly as she shifted from foot to foot.

“Yeah, kinda weird don’t ya think?” He questioned.

“Yeah…” She struggled.

“So you work here?” he asked as he pointed to the apron.

“Yeah I do. Been here for about a year. And I’m guessing you just got off work?” She asked as she pointed to his apron underneath his jacket.

“Yup. I’m here to meet my brother about some business but considering he’s not here yet…”

“Oh! How dumb of me!” Kagome threw up her towel as she manoeuvred behind the bar, “ What can I et you while you wait?”

Inuyasha sat on one of the tall red stools and leaned over the counter.

“A beer?” He asked hoping that this place sold alcohol.

“Coming right up.” She said cheerfully as she stuck her hands into one of the many freezers situated under the bar and pulled out a bottle of beer.

She popped off the bottle cap with one hand and sat it before him with a smile.

“How the hell did you do that?” Inuyasha questioned as he eyed the bottle in front of him.

“Well think about it. I’ve been working in bars and clubs for a good chunk of my years so I’ve learned a few things.”

“Oh? Just how old are you exactly?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know.” She smiled sweetly as she grabbed the thrown towel and began to wipe down the counter.

“Yeah, actually. I would.” Inuyasha asked now totally perplexed. What of she ended up being a lot younger or older than she appeared to be? If either he hoped the later. He didn’t want to go to jail for messing with minors. But then again Kagura wouldn’t have hired her to work at the club.

Kagome looked his face over with a calculating look which slightly intrigued Inuyasha.

Just what was this girl hiding.

“I’m 27.” Lies…

“Good.” Inuyasha said looking rather happy with her answer.

“What do you mean ‘good’?”

“I’m the same age as you! And it means that I can ask for your number without being arrested.” He grinned.

“Ah…” Acknowledgement crossed her face as well as a faint blush.

“So, how’s about it?” Inuyasha asked with his lips pouted and eyes widened to resemble that if a puppy.

Kagome looked around making sure Hojo was out of range, not wanting to cause any problems and sighed in relief as she found no trace of him.

Pulling out notepad from her apron she grabbed the pencil that had been tucked behind her ear and scribbled down the number of her mobile.

Inuyasha grinned like and idiot the whole time and accepted the piece of beautiful paper with much appreciation before placing it carefully in his pocket.

A blush covered Kagome’s face the whole time which only made Inuyasha smile more.

“Now that I have what I need why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself? He asked taking a rather large gulp of his beer,

‘Oh great…’ She thought as the question rolled off his tongue. ‘Well Inuyasha, I’m a dark angel that had been fallen from heaven over 500 years ago, I’m actually well over a few thousand years old, and I work for the devil himself. How about you?’

Yeah that would go down nicely.

“Not much to tell really…” She answered quietly.

“Aw, come on! How about where you grew up.”

“Uhm…I moved around a lot. Never really stayed any one place for too long. Actually New York is the place I’ve lived the longest out of all of them.”

“How long have you been here?” He asked leaning forwards, giving her his complete attention.

“3 years. I met Ayame in L.A. five years back and we both decided to move here together. We share an apartment not too far from here.”

“Oh yeah? I’ve been here about 4 years. So exactly how often have you moved?” He asked in a wondering tone.

“Lots. I’m talking about living in other countries too.” She answered leaning against the bar.

He gave a low whistle as he imagined just how much she must have actually moved.

“So what about you?” She asked quizzically.

“Born and raised Upstate. I was born into a rich family, but that never really was for me. So my bro moved here after he met Kagura, and when I came to visit I fell in love with the city. An I aint planning on leaving anytime soon. So why exactly do you move around so much?”

“Because I can. A bit of a free spirit you can say. But I plan on spending a few more years here before I move on…again.” She answered with a smile.

“That’s reassuring.” He grinned as the bell on the door chimed.

They both turned to find his brother standing in the doorway, a pristine black suit covering him and a leather case in his hand.

“Time for business.” Inuyasha grimaced as he got up and walked with his brother to a table near a window in the far corner of the diner.

It took a few minutes for Kagome to register what he had said.

Business?

Actually, come to think of it he said that a few times.

What could they possibly have to meet about that included anything business like.

He worked in the café didn’t he?

And from what she knew he didn’t work at the club or anything.

Looking over at the pair she noticed Inuyasha looking at her with a smile on his face which she shyly returned.

“Hey Kagome?” She heard from behind her.

She turned to find Hojo once again.

“Yeah?”

“Are you dating that guy?”

“Ugh!” Kagome sighed as she slumped forward onto the counter, not at all prepared to answer annoying questions from the boy who was currently infatuated with her.

She looked up at the clock and noticed it was nearing 5:30.

Just 7 minutes then she would be out of here and going home to change, then back out to her new job.

‘Just 7 more minutes‘ she chided to herself as she blocked out Hojo’s annoying voice.
