Sister!
Their unison screech could be heard for miles, their sadness and pain over-taking many. Kira sobbed as her twin was taken away by a flying bird, running blindly as she tried to catch up.
“Kari… Kari… Kari!

The famous half dog demon froze, his golden eyes narrowing as his nose and ears twitched. His hearing was very sensitive, hearing screams from miles away. The black haired girl next to him stopped what she was doing and placed her hand on his shoulder.
“Inuyasha, what do you hear?” Kikyo's voice was soft, almost cold. To anyone that didn't know her, it almost sounded rude. But to Inuyasha, he knew she was simply curious.
“Screams. A couple miles south.” His eyes flicked to her, but his ears were set towards the sound and his nose twitching, trying to read if there was any danger coming.
“Well, let us be going, then.” She placed the basket she was holding on the ground, picked up her bow and arrow and began walking in the direction Inuyasha spoke of, leaving a mouth-dropped Inuyasha.
“Whaaat?!” He called, jumping to catch up with her. “You are seriously involving yourself, again?!”
Kikyo glanced a look at Inuyasha and a slow smile crept up onto her lips. “How nice of you to join me, Inuyasha.”

“We're here.” Inuyasha spoke in a soft tone, crouching slightly, making sure to keep Kikyo behind him. They were at the edge of the forest, behind a few trees, overlooking an open field.
“Is there any danger?” She simply asked, looking down at him.
“No, I can't smell anything… But something is off - Hey wait!” Inuyasha called after Kikyo. Was the girl stupid or something? Why would she walk into an open field when he had just told her that something was off about it? Nonetheless, he gave a quick huff and followed her, his arms crossed, his eyes in a glare.
What he found was Kikyo in the center of the field, on her knees, a soft smile playing on her lips. He couldn't see who she was with, so he decided to move closer, of course, always staying very cautious.
What he found was a girl - no wait, she wasn't just that, she was a half demon. Half dog demon, just like him. Her blonde hair was the same color as his eyes and was up in an Odango Atama style (think Sailor Moon). Of course, the pigtails of it weren't nearly as long, as they only reached to her chin. She had bangs on both sides of her forehead, but there was an opening in the middle, almost making a heart shape. In front of the balls of hair on her head, there sat two dog ears, matching the color of her hair. Her eyes were a dazzling blue, filled with tears as she looked from Kikyo to Inuyasha and back again. Under her left eye was symbol, looking oddly like a question mark, with a swirl, instead of just a curve. The pink kimono she wore was torn, but Inuyasha could tell that she came from a wealthy family.
“Child, what is your name?” Kikyo spoke as she laid her bow and arrow down on the ground.
“What are you, mad?! Don't put down your weapons, Kikyo!” Inuyasha snarled, crouching down. He knew that if this demon attacked, he'd have to protect Kikyo. She was really too kind for her own good.
The demon flinched, and she took a step back, causing Kikyo to send a glare towards Inuyasha. “Do not worry about him, child. He is merely being protective.”
“Kira…” Her voice was but a whisper as she clenched her hand around her fist under her chin, her body shaking with fear. She looked around eight, and even younger when she gave off this fearful expression.
“Hello, Kira. My name is Kikyo. This is Inuyasha here. He is a half dog demon.” She spoke, pointing to a flabbergasted Inuyasha. When he noticed Kira's eyes on him, he quickly recovered him composure and muttered a few swears, stuffing his arms into his hatori, pointing his nose up.
“Me too.” She looked over towards Inuyasha, her mouth breaking out into a huge smile. She walked over to him and pulled on his sleeve. “Inu-kun, was your Mother human too?” She asked simply, tilting her head, meaning no harm with her question.
At first, Inuyasha's face was over-taken with anger. Then came the painful sadness along with a nod. “Yeah, she was.”
At this time, Kikyo decided to intervene. “Kira, where is your mother?”
Both of them were surprised when the tears started. “Fa-Father killed her! Si-Sister and I… ran away.” She paused to sniffle before her whole face was taken by fear. “Don't send me back to him! You can't!” At this point, she turned to run, only to find that she couldn't. Looking around, her feet began to get an odd sensation of cold.
“Feh,” Inuyasha huffed, holding Kira up by the back of her kimono. “We ain't handing you over to nobody.”
Kira still had a panicked expression upon her lovely face as Kikyo stood in front of her and wrapped her arms around the child, holding her close to her body. Inuyasha's grip lessened as he watched the sight, softness coming out of his harsh face.
“Would you like to stay with us, Kira? We'll protect you.” Kira looked up at Kikyo and smiled widely, nodding her head vigorously.
“But what about sister?” She titled her head slightly, looking at Kikyo. “She was taken away by a bird demon not too long ago.”
With a look from Kikyo and a gruff from Inuyasha, he agreed to do it. “What does she look like?” Kira simply pointed to herself.
“Just like me!” She cooed, her face shining. And with that, Inuyasha was off. Kikyo put Kira down and they headed off to the village, all along the way talking and getting to know one another more. Inuyasha was gone for three days and in that time, Kira had gotten accustom to living with Kikyo. She even looked up to Kikyo like a mother.
As soon as Kira smelt Inuyasha, she busted out of hut, screaming, “Inu-papa!” She jumped on him, hugging him close.
Inuyasha's face became close to the color of his hatori and he pushed her off. “Oi!” He huffed.
“Mama-chan has been telling me stories about you.” She smiled brightly at him before looking behind him and around. “Where is Kari? She'll love it here!”
Inuyasha's face slowly became sad and he knelt down to Kira's eye level. “I couldn't find her. I don't know where she is. Who knows, maybe if you stay here, she'll come back for you.”
Kira gave a short nod, biting her bottom lip. “Yeah, Inu-papa is probably right…”
“Oi! What is up with you calling me that?!” He glared at her placing his hand on top of her head.
Kikyo giggled from behind him. “I decided to take care of her as my own, and she decided that you'd be perfect as a Father to her.”
His cheeks once again filled with a rosy color, but he made no comment back. Looking at Kira and Kikyo, he felt like he found his family, at long last.

Months went by, and they grew closer. Kira and Inuyasha were almost always together, him teaching her the ways to survive being a half demon. During this time, though, Kikyo found a burned bandit named Onigumo. Being the kind soul she was, she decided to take care of him in a cave near by the village. Of course, she kept it a secret from both Inuyasha and Kira, but often talked about them to Onigumo.
Then the unbelievable happened. One day, when Kira was out hunting - she was merely trying to prove to Inuyasha that she could do it by herself - the accident happened between Kikyo and Inuyasha. Upon returning to the village, she found Keade huddled over a body. Slowly walking up to her, she feared the worse.
“Keade-chan… What happened?” She spoke softly, her ears pinned against her head.
“Oh Kira-chan! Kikyo-onee-san… Inuyasha-san…” Her cries were barely audible, even for Kira's sensitive hearing. That's when she saw the body. The bloody body that was once her Mama-chan. Her scream blocked out the image, blocked out Keade's cries, blocked out everything.
She didn't even notice she was running until she came to Inuyasha's tree. It had always been Inuyasha's tree. He was often found sitting in this tree, thinking. She had tried to climb up the branch he usually sat on and ended up breaking a bone.
But she didn't need to have to try to get to his branch this day. For when she noticed where she was, all she could see was Inuyasha. And an arrow through his chest. Her knees buckled at the sight.
“Inu-papa… No…” She crawled towards him, finally reaching his feet. Glancing up, her gasp was so soft, she barely heard it herself. The arrow… it belonged to Kikyo. Kikyo had done this to Inuyasha? But why?
“Kira-chan.”
Keade's voice snapped Kira out of her gaze. “You should leave. The villagers might come after you. They don't like half demons so much, anymore.”
Kira gave a short nod and in a whoosh, was gone. She ran for miles, finally reaching a cave. She crawled inside and curled into a ball. Why did this have to happen? First her Mother, then her sister and now her new Mother and Father? She curled more, gripping her legs as her tears poured down her cheeks. The only thought that ran through her head was this:
What now?
