Chapter 4: Plan of Attack
The sun had just begun to set as Kagome turned to Sesshomaru and asked him “Have you eaten yet?”
He turned towards her as he stoked the fire he had made a few minutes before they arrived. “No, not yet. Rin is catching some fish for us all right now.”
Inuyasha stood up and angrily shouted “How can you expect that tiny girl to get enough fish for all of us?! She couldn’t carry more than five at the most.”
A female voice rang through the campsite. “He didn’t. She had help. She’s good at catching fish. She fishes, I carry them.”
Inuyasha was about to give this woman a piece of his mind when he was stopped in his tracks. He could tell by her scent she was Inu, but what stopped him was her beauty.
The demoness was gorgeous. Her silver/ white hair, a feature found exclusively on Inu demons, flowed down to the middle of her back. As she pushed it back with her hand, he noticed the pointed ear, on which she was wearing a small, blue bead earring. On her forehead she had a red, crescent moon shaped mark, similar to Sesshomaru’s, the different color showing she was from a different family. The stripes on her cheeks, also like Sesshomaru’s, were pink. Without all the demon markings, she could have easily been one of the models in one of Kagome’s fashion magazines.
As Inuyasha openly gawked at this new demoness, Sesshomaru smirked. As Miroku turned to see his reaction to Inuyasha’s reaction to the demoness, the smirk quickly faded and both men turned back towards Inuyasha.
Inuyasha now stared at the demoness’ body. She wore a midnight blue haori and hakama, but it was on the tight side and he could easily see the shape of her body beneath it. By this time, Sesshomaru had enough of his staring and put a stop to it.
He got up and approached the demoness. Taking the fish from her, he gave them to Jaken, who took them and Rin towards the fire. Sesshomaru began his introduction of the demoness. “This is Yomiko, she is…”
“She’s a High Demonic Priestess.” Inuyasha whispered. Everyone in his own group turned to him in confusion. “The mark on her neck. It shows she’s a High Demonic Priestess.” Kagome looked and sure enough there was a small magenta star on her neck.
Sango stood and walked towards Yomiko. “I thought High Demonic Priestesses were just a legend.”
Yomiko chuckled. “I can see you are confused by me. Let’s eat and then I’ll tell you all about myself and why I‘m here.” As she turned away from Inuyasha and Sango, she locked eyes with Sesshomaru. Kagome, who was turning towards the fire to help Rin and Jaken, stared in shock as she saw the normally stoic Taiyoukai’s eyes soften as he stared at Yomiko. She saw Yomiko’s hand start to reach towards him when a quick look from Sesshomaru towards her caused him to walk away from Yomiko towards the fire.
He joined Rin and Jaken at the fire with his stoic expression back on his face and watched as they and Sango cooked the fish. When they were done, Yomiko and Rin passed them out. As they finished, they threw the wood skewers into the fire and Kagome used the kettle in her backpack to make tea.
When everyone had their tea, Yomiko began her story. “Well, first, I guess I should tell you more about what I am before I tell you who I am. Like Inuyasha said, I am a high demonic priestess. He was so shocked to find that out because there is only one born every five hundred years. It only happens when a powerful youkai and someone with high spiritual power bond and consummate their bonding within a day.”
Inuyasha stopped her with a question he had for hours. “Would someone please tell me what the hell is bonding?”
Yomiko chuckled at his outburst. “Bonding is similar to a ningen wedding ceremony. It has the same idea, but the rituals done in a bonding ceremony are different. In a bonding ceremony these rituals bind the couple more than a wedding ceremony.” Noting the look of hope and longing that Inuyasha and Kagome gave each other, she continued. “That’s all you need to know about it for now, later I will explain it fully.”
“Well, as for who I am,” she stopped as Sesshomaru got up and with a quick look towards her, headed into the forest towards the cliff overlooking Kaede’s village. They were all confused about why he left, but brushed it aside as Yomiko continued. “My father was Inuyasha and Sesshomaru’s father’s second-in-command of his army. My mother was the main healer for the western palace. They met each other while my mother was healing the wounded after a battle with the panther demons over five hundred years ago.”
Yomiko smiled as Rin laid her head on her lap and yawned. “Well, you know how it goes after that: they fell in love, bonded, and then had me a few months later. I grew up in the palace, until I was thirteen. Then I trained with another High Demonic Priestess for a few years before coming back to live in the palace again. I’ve been there ever since.”
“Sesshomaru told me about Naraku and asked me if I could think of anything we could do to stop him. We have some ideas. Koga has even given us a few more.” Looking around for a second, she stopped the conversation with “Let me get Sesshomaru, we have many things to discuss.” She got up and left camp and quickly came back with him.
They exchanged a glance before Yomiko went towards the trees. She went around the camp in a circle stopping at four trees. At each one, she pulled out what looked like an ofuda. As she stuck each one on, they glowed purple for a moment. Before sticking on the fourth one, she looked back and said “I can’t possibly think of one that could possibly work though.” With that said, she stuck the fourth on the tree. A purple barrier went up over the whole camp. The purple light was shimmered for a second before disappearing.
She sat down next to Sesshomaru and he began to speak. “I know you all have questions and hopefully between Yomiko, Koga, and I we can answer them.”
Across the fire, Inuyasha could hardly believe his brother. First, it was the joke he made earlier. Now, he was talking to them civilly. They were going to work together to destroy Naraku. It nearly made his head spin.
“First of all, I need to explain the barrier I made. It will seal us off from Naraku or any of his spies. He can’t see or hear us in here.” Yomiko explained.
When everyone nodded in understanding, Sesshomaru began to speak. “We have been searching for Naraku for longer than we said earlier. We need to keep Naraku in the dark about what we have really been doing. Koga, Yomiko and I have actually been working together for a month. We found Naraku’s castle two weeks ago and we’ve been seeing how close we can get to him since then. “
After a minute of silence, Kagome asked the unspoken question. “When you say “close”, how do you mean?”
“With me sealing Sesshomaru, Koga and I in a shield, we’ve actually stood directly behind him for several minutes without him even noticing us. “
“What?!” Inuyasha exclaimed. “Behind him?! What are you crazy?!.
Sesshomaru smirked “Yes. It’s true and that’s why I came to you and your group. As crazy as it sounds, we actually have an alliance with Kagura. We need you to pretend to fight Kagura while we surprise Naraku from behind. In exchange for information, we will get Kagura’s heart back from Naraku before we defeat him. That was our deal.”
“Pretend to fight Kagura? Why would you make such a deal?” Inuyasha turned to Koga. “After what she did to your people?”
Koga looked sad for a moment before replying “Despite what she did, she only did it because she was following Naraku’s orders. She had no say in it. Naraku was holding her heart hostage. When she told us how he would just pick it up out of a jar he has it in and squeeze it, making her writhe in agony, I just felt so bad for her. I couldn’t hate her anymore.”
Inuyasha nodded in understanding. Softly, he asked “So, what’s the plan?”
“Tomorrow morning, we will break camp as we usually do. We will pretend to send the children back to the miko Kaede’s, but in reality we will just be sending them above Naraku’s barrier so they can let us know when we are where we should be. After that, we will head off in separate directions with our respective groups. Your group will go directly north and right into Naraku’s castle. We will travel to the other side of it, in order to get behind him. When you reach the barrier, Rin will ask Ah-un to go down because she sees some flowers.”
“That will be the sign that the barrier is close in front of you. You will dissolve the barrier with Tetsusiega. Soon after, you’ll encounter Kagura. You will fight her, but don’t hurt her. While you are fighting, the three of us, covered by Yomiko’s shield, will make our way to Naraku.”
“All at once, Yomiko will drop the barrier and Koga will leave us to go for Kagura’s heart that’s in the castle. Then I will attack Naraku with Tokijin and my poison at the same time. I recently learned that my poison actually stops Naraku from regenerating. While he is distracted, Yomiko will use her spiritual powers on him as well. We believe our combination of attacks should defeat him. Also, thanks to Kagura’s information, he plans to have his night of vulnerability tomorrow night, which will make tomorrow morning when he is his weakest.”
‘Damn, now I see why you’re a Lord, Sesshomaru. You’re good at this strategy stuff.” Everyone nodded at Inuyasha’s compliment.
As Sango sat listening to everyone, she had one thought, Kohaku. Yomiko saw Sango’s face and instantly knew what she was thinking about. She went over and sat next to the slayer. Placing her hand on hers, Yomiko told her “He is alright. Kohaku is hidden at the western palace. When the time comes, Sesshomaru will use Tenseiga on him. He will be fine; Tenseiga heals more than just physical injuries.” Yomiko patted her hand once more before getting up and rejoining Sesshomaru on the other side.
“Is everything clear?” When everyone nodded, he nodded to Yomiko who peeled the seals from the trees.
“May I have some more tea, Kagome?” Miroku asked.
“Sure, Miroku.” She made more tea for everyone and for a couple of hours they all talked. The yawning of Rin and Shippo made Kagome realize how late it was. She looked at her watch, which thankfully her mother had thought to buy her. It was one of those new ones that didn’t run on batteries but on the wearer’s body. Kagome didn’t know the science behind it, but she also didn’t care. Seeing it was almost eleven, she told Shippo and Rin “Come on, it’s time for bed.” At first they complained, but they got into Kagome’s sleeping bag anyway.
Then Kagome and Sango yawned. Seeing the faces of Inuyasha and Miroku, Sesshomaru saw that they too were tired but didn’t want to show it. They were torn between wanting to sleep and wanting to watch over the camp. He could tell this feeling was not uncommon for them, he himself had felt it within his group. Especially since Yomiko and then Koga had joined him. After seeing him sway one night as he went to make a round around the camp, Koga had to actually threaten to knock him unconscious in order to get him to sleep. Of course, Koga couldn’t actually do it but it did make him see what he was doing to himself. Sesshomaru cleared his throat and told them “Go to sleep. I will watch the camp tonight.”
Inuyasha went to argue, but one cold glare from Sesshomaru stopped him. He took Kagome and they set themselves up under the nearest tree. Miroku spread out the other sleeping bag. He got into it and opened his arms for Sango. At first, she was unsure but a warm look from Yomiko and a small nod from Sesshomaru she climbed in with him and let him hold her tightly. Koga followed Inuyasha’s example and set himself under another tree and he was the first to fall asleep.
Soon after, Inuyasha and Kagome followed suit. Then, Miroku and Sango were next. Kagome woke up to tell Sesshomaru something, but what she saw stopped her in her tracks. Her earlier suspicions were correct as she saw Sesshomaru holding Yomiko tightly and giving her a gentle and loving kiss. She could swear that she could see the love rolling off them in waves.
As they broke the kiss, Sesshomaru realized they had an audience. He began to get angry, but a gentle and knowing smile from Kagome made his anger dissipate. Yomiko put her head on his shoulder completely oblivious to Kagome’s watching eyes. His arm tightened around her, pulling her closer.
Sesshomaru looked around the camp watching everyone as they slept. Looking down at Yomiko sleeping against him, he thought ‘By this time tomorrow, we will free of Naraku forever.’
