Payback

A breath of cold wind sent shivers down his spine. His normally laid-back demeanor suddenly becoming uptight, and on edge. Glancing up towards the sky; the holy monk couldn’t help but frown. Gliding through the clouds he discovered the source of his uneasiness.

“What’s wrong?” asked Sango. She had slyly been watching him for a while, wary of the perverted monks wandering hand. At least that’s what she liked to tell herself. It wasn’t often that they found themselves alone in each others company. Inuyasha had disappeared off into the forest, and Shippou was patiently waiting by the well for Kagome to return, leaving them all alone. Occurrences like these were seldom, but very much welcomed. Noticing his sudden change in demeanor, she too instantly became more alert

“Soul gatherers. “He whispered, Unhappy that his time with Sango was interrupted by such foul creatures. To him they were dark omens, an ominously prophetic sign. Seeing them so near camp could only mean one thing. He’d been so happy when Inuyasha had run off leaving him and his love alone to spend some time together. Now he understood why.

“Today of all days! When lady Kagome is to return!” groaned Miroku. He knew what would happen. This situation always had the same outcome. Knowing of her feelings for the foolish hanyou, he couldn’t help but worry. The girl would be hurt, and betrayed. She was late, and he hoped that she had changed her mind. He prayed that she had decided to stay another day in her time.

Miroku’s prayers were not answered. Kagome came walking into camp, backpack slung over one shoulder, and Shippou in the other, happily oblivious of Miroku’s recent discovery. Glancing at his companion, they both made a silent agreement to not tell Kagome where Inuyasha had run off to.

Unfortunately for them Shippou spoiled there plans. “Momma! Kikyou is here!” grossed the kit. They all grimaced, and gave each other knowing looks. Looking in Kagome‘s direction, they all waited to see her reaction.

Kagome had known she was near; could feel the tug of the missing piece of her soul. She knew Inuyasha wasn’t around camp by the look on her friend’s worried faces. Looking around, Kagome confirmed her assumption to be right. Inuyasha was gone, and no doubt with his undead lover.

Kagome didn’t know why but she had to go see for herself. Tossing her bag to the ground, she began to walk at a fast pace towards Kikyou’s soul gatherers, and ignored her friends and kit as they called after her. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and her breath came out in pants. She was scared, and couldn’t figure out why. This wasn’t the first time Inuyasha had run off to meet Kikyou in secret.

Coming to a halt at the sight before her; Kagome couldn‘t help but gasp. In front of her stood Kikyou and Inuyasha in a passionate kiss, arms wrapped around one another in a lovers embrace. At that very moment Kagome felt like the air had been knocked out of her chest. She couldn’t breathe, and she couldn’t stop the tears that flowed down her cheeks and onto the forest floor.

Inuyasha was so distracted he hadn’t smelled her approaching, and he wanted to smack himself for being so careless. He hadn’t meant for her to find him, and it killed him to look at her. She looked so hurt, so betrayed that he knew there was nothing he could say to make it better. Nothing he could do to make this situation go away.

Kagome had decided enough was enough. She would not shed anymore tears for him. Even though her heart was breaking, she refused to show it. Taking a deep breath, drying her eyes, and squaring up her shoulders. Kagome prepared herself for confrontation. He would not get away with it anymore. In all of her fantasies she had been the one kissing him, holding him, loving him, and once again here he was with Kikyou. She was tired of him going back forth between them, always making her feel second best. No matter what she did it always seemed like it was never enough. It truly was time for it all to stop.

“Kagome I….” Inuyasha was totally at a loss for words. He could only stare at her in guilt, and shame. This just couldn’t be happening, if only it were a bad dream.

“Inuyasha you’ve always known my feelings for you.” said Kagome thoughtfully

“There’s no way you could not have known. If you hadn’t known there’d be no reason for you to look guilty. No reason for you to sneak around, right?” asked Kagome.

“Kagome I’m so sorry! It’s not what you think….It isn’t like…” sighed Inuyasha. He couldn’t think. He just couldn’t think. He knew he screwed up and he couldn’t come up with anything to say to make things right.

“Are you really sorry Inuyasha? We’ve been in this situation many times before, and you always say that! If you want to be with her, be with her! I’m tired of being strung along! My heart can’t take anymore of this, and I refuse to continue to be used!” screamed a frustrated Kagome. Kagome couldn‘t believe it. He still just couldn’t see what a good thing he had in front of him. She wanted him to live, whereas Kikyou wanted him to die. She loved him for who he was. Kikyou wanted him for what he could become. No matter how hard she tried, no matter what she did it was never enough. She’d forever be in Kikyou’s shadow. She needed to leave, and she needed to leave now. Not even sparing him a backwards glance Kagome sprinted back to camp

“Let her go. What’s done is done. She is after all just my reincarnate.” spoke Kikyou for the first time at Inuyasha who’d began to move as if to chase after her. Not wanting to deal with the problems he knew he would have back at camp, Inuyasha just sighed and tightened his hold on Kikyou.

Walking back into camp Kagome was shot questioning glances from all around. “Sango will you come to the hot springs with me?” asked Kagome. Right now she really needed her friend. Grabbing their things, the two girls made there way to the springs.

The walk towards the springs was a silent one. Sango knew that the encounter with Inuyasha and Kikyou had turned out awful by the look on Kagome‘s face. Her friend looked so dejected; no longer her cheery self and it hurt to see her friend so distressed.

Setting her things to the ground Sango slid her body into the warm water next to Kagome. “What happened?” asked Sango.

“I don’t know what to do anymore.” whispered Kagome brokenly. “I thought that if I loved him enough, he would finally see me, but I’ll always be a flawed copy to him.” cried Kagome. “He held her, and he kissed her in a way I could only dream of! I feel so stupid!” groaned Kagome.

“Kagome you can’t keep letting him do this to you! You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and Inuyasha is going to realize this.” spoke Sango. She had an idea.

“Payback‘s in order! Inuyasha needs a dose of his own medicine Kagome, and you’re going to give it to him!” said Sango fiercely!

“What you do suppose I do?” asked Kagome curiously. Her friend had a devilish glint in her eye, and she knew Sango had a devious plan. Leaning into her friend. Kagome listened as Sango whispered in her ear the plan.

“You’re right Sango! Payback’s a bitch, and this time the bitch is going to be me!” giggled Kagome.

“Inuyasha is in for a ride! By the time we’re done with him he’ll be so whipped!” and at Sango’s last comment both girls fell out laughing. Splashing around in the water the girls continued to plan Kagome’s revenge on Inuyasha.
