Kagome watched the village children playing with a smile. She was very big with child, and was proud to think that she would probably have her own little one to look after in the next few months.

However, something was nagging at her, and it wasn't something in the village. The only thing she could think of was that Inuyasha and Shippo had gotten in to trouble with their training session, but she didn't sense any youkai. She was sure that Inuyasha could take care of himself, but the nagging feeling just wouldn't go away.

“Kagome!”

She whipped around in response to the yell, and frowned deeper when Shippo tore into the clearing.

“Inuyasha, he, he-“ Shippo was gasping for breath. “Kikyo.”

Kagome's heart froze in her chest. No, is she out for vengeance? To try and take him away by force?

She ran into the forest following her mate's aura, hoping that she didn't fall and hurt herself. She was wheezing and in pain by the time she reached the area her mate seemed to be. She ran forward, and she froze again, her heart plummeting.

Inuyasha and Kikyo stood completely calm, Inuyasha with his arms around her shoulders in an embrace. She didn't sense any magic on his aura, and somehow she knew that he was acting of his own accord.

He's being so intimate, even as I am here, even though I'm carrying his child?

Kagome silently turned away and trudged back to the village. Her entire world seemed to be crashing down around her, but all she could do was walk wearily towards the village. She didn't stop until she reached Sango and Miroku's hut. She came to the entrance and took a deep breath, gathering her courage, and knocked on the doorframe.

The flap pushed aside and Miroku greeted her, slightly surprised.

“Kagome-sama? Weren't you with the children?”

Kagome hung her head, feeling humiliated and shamed. “Can I stay with you for a while?”

Miroku stared at her, and frowned. “What did he do?”

Kagome shook her head. “Nothing at all. I just haven't visited Sango-chan for a while, and I thought it would be a nice change and I probably won't be able to once the baby is born.”

Miroku eyed her suspiciously, but nodded. He stood aside and opened the flap for her.

“Where are your clothes and such? If you're planning on staying with us for a while, that is.”

Kagome faked a hearty laugh, which came out sounding like she was dying. “I guess I just forgot about that. Would you be so kind as to retrieve some kimono for me, Miroku-sama? I'm afraid the walk to your end of the village is quite tiring for someone in my condition.”

Miroku narrowed his eyes and frowned deeper. Kagome gave up on the act.

“Please?” she begged, her eyes desperate. Miroku sighed wearily, and nodded his assent. He disappeared out the door without a word.

Kagome sighed deeply. She wandered into the spare room in their hut, where she eased herself down and curled her arms and legs around her swollen belly.

She wasn't sure exactly how long she cried, but the feelings of shame just wouldn't leave her alone. She had never felt so humiliated and worthless in her entire life.

When her tears flowed less she noticed the sounds of a fight outside. She carefully stood up and glanced out the window. She had to stifle a gasp at what she saw.

Inuyasha and Miroku were faced off, Inuyasha wielding Tetsusaiga, and Miroku his staff. The dirt was already churned from various swings and misses.

“I'll ask one more time.” Inuyasha growled. “Where the hell is my mate, and what the fuck is she doing here?”

Miroku glared back. “You won't hurt her any more, Inuyasha. If that means that I must fight you back, then so be it. You are not welcome here.”

Inuyasha growled. He raised Tetsusaiga and charged the monk. Miroku blocked the hit with his staff while sliding to a side, taking advantage of Inuyasha's open back. Quicker than lighting Inuyasha had Miroku's striking hand in his grip, and he bore the monk to the ground.

Inuyasha released Miroku and made a dash for the door to the hut, on the left from Kagome's perspective. She gasped, only then realizing what he intended to do. She looked around frantically, and finally spotted a knife. She picked it up, feeling disgusting for even considering using it against her mate, but certain that it was better to have it than to be unarmed.

She spun, and her eyes met Inuyasha's.

“I know you saw.” He said simply. “What did you see?”

Kagome nearly choked. He admits it so openly.

She blinked back tears and turned away so he wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing her cry.

“You can go, if you want.” She mumbled. “I won't stop you. Nothing is keeping you here now, I'm releasing you from whatever you feel bound to.”

Inuyasha growled at her and stomped across the room towards her.

Kagome raised the knife, not quite sure of what to do with it. She was scared, terrified actually, and she knew he could probably smell it.

Inuyasha darted forward and grabbed the knife hilt and her wrist in one shot.

“You can't hurt me, bitch. And I ain't gonna do anything to hurt you. So just calm down and we'll go home.” He began tugging at her wrist, but Kagome shook her head.

“Please just go.” She mumbled.

Inuyasha scowled. “I can't leave you, bitch.”

“I already said I released you from any bindings.”

“Mating is for life, wench! I can't pack up and leave because you are having a fucking mood. Get off your sorry, fat ass and let's go home.”

Kagome released a sharp cry. All the feelings bottled within her, dread, sorrow, pain, all released in that moment. What little hope she had built up was shattered by the onslaught. She lowered her head, feeling thoroughly humiliated. Silently she walked out of the room, the hut, and made her way towards her home. Except, for some reason, she didn't want to go there right now.

Kagome was feeling horrible by the time she arrived at her hut. She could feel Inuyasha following her, and the thought made her even more miserable.

“Kagome!” She automatically opened her arms for the kitsune who ran up and very gently climbed up her back to curl up on her shoulder.

“Are you okay?”

Kagome winced in pain, then put on a bright, false smile. “Of course, Shippo-chan. What do you want for dinner? I'll make your favorite.”

Shippo squealed in delight and bounced on her shoulder.

“Oden!”

Kagome smiled again, a little more truthfully. “Sure. Want to help me make it?”

Shippo nodded enthusiastically and jumped off her shoulder once they reached the kitchen area. Kagome felt Inuyasha settle himself cross-legged by the door and sink into brooding.

Within an hour the oden was done, not quite to perfection but still very good. Kagome and Shippo both ate, Shippo rambunctiously, while Kagome barely touched hers. Shippo bounced for a little while longer, then was overcome with a large wave of sleepiness. Kagome picked him up, and grabbed the extra bowl of oden.

Inuyasha was rudely stirred from his brooding when he heard Kagome set a bowl of something in from of him. He opened his eyes and looked around, only to see the simmering pot, two empty bowls, and echoes of Kagome telling Shippo a story in his room.

Inuyasha growled. One of the things he always did was eat with his family. It bothered him that Kagome ate without him, and gave him cold food. He ate it anyways, knowing that she would be highly offended when she came out if she found it uneaten or returned to the pot.

Inuyasha went over the day in his mind. Saying farewell to Kikyo was one of the harder things he had had to do in his life, and he was happy now that it was over. All that was left was to tell Kagome the news. Unfortunately he knew that she wasn't likely to be in a forgiving mood after he had fought with her.

How about I take her to bed, show her how much I love her, then break the news.

Inuyasha smirked in satisfaction at his new plan, and settled himself against the wall, waiting for Kagome to come out so he could put his plan into action.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

Shippo had long since fallen asleep, but Kagome kept telling the story anyways. Her grandpa had always continued this story whether people were listening or not. When she finally ran out of things to say she sighed and watched the sleeping child. Shippo was curled up in sleep, and looked absolutely adorable.

Her thoughts turned dark, and she whimpered softly. Silently Kagome crawled over to the closet, where she pulled out a ratty old futon. The blanket for it was equally gross, but right now it would have to do. There was no way she was sharing a room, let alone a bed, with Inuyasha from now on. He could let Kikyo's cold clay flesh warm him at night.

Kagome set up the futon next to Shippo and crawled into it. It felt dirty and thin, and she felt even sicker occupying it. The thing made her feel even worse, if that was possible. She could tell that Inuyasha was dozing by his aura, which was one small blessing.

She really didn't want to think about what to do or think, even less so about what Inuyasha thought or was going to do. Never had her heart been so totally shattered. Why had he waited all this time and convinced her that he cared for her only to pull something like this?

I really am second best. As soon as Kikyo decides to go to hell, I'll lose him forever. Never feel him arms around me ever again. Never hear him yell at me, or whisper to me. Never feel him sleeping beside me again. Never touch his ears…

Kagome buried her face into the futon, the grossness overwhelmed by the need to cry. She rolled onto her back, the hugeness of her belly making her need to lay on her back. Her back ached, partially from running across the village, and partially from the pain of being 8 months pregnant.

I really want a back rub right now. Kagome thought to herself miserably. She felt her body slipping into slumber, which was not entirely welcome. However, her body's physical needs overpowered her brain and she fell into nightmares.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

Inuyasha woke with a start and growled. He felt cold, which meant that his mate wasn't nearby. He sat up off the wall, noting that it was the middle of the night and that he was in the main room. He snarled ferociously. His plans for making things up to Kagome were ruined. He rose and strode to his room, furious with himself. He stopped short at the sight of their folded futon. Kagome wasn't in their room.

Panic began to grip Inuyasha. He tore out of the room and into Shippo's, praying that she was there. He breathed an enormous sigh of relief when he found her sleeping by Shippo's side.

The relief was short lived, however, and displeasure and confusion took its place. Kagome was half out of the old, ratty spare futon. She trembled with cold and with fear, sweat pouring off her in waves. She was mumbling and whimpering in her sleep, fighting her blanket and thrashing, as much as she could in her condition. Shippo was reacting to her distress, in sleep he was curled up with his tail around his body, trying to block the signs of agitation from the next futon over.

Inuyasha whined and slid up on Kagome's side. He reached out and stroked her cheek, smiling sadly when she grabbed it and held on tight.

“Inuyasha.” She whispered.

Inuyasha stroked her cheek solemnly, saddened to see her so deep in despair.

“Please…don't go…I love you, I love you, please.” Kagome was crying out pitifully. Tears flowed down her cheeks and she broke her mumblings to sob.

“Don't leave me alone! I don't want to be alone, please, Inuyasha. No…Kikyo…”

Inuyasha winced. She had had these types of nightmares right after he mated her. She had never questioned his fidelity in the waking world, she hadn't even brought up the subject of Kikyo. But her moans in the night were enough proof for him. It was as though she expected it to be a dream that she would wake up from any day. Knowing that she was sensitive about the topic, Inuyasha lavished love and affection onto her, especially when she woke up in the morning after a particularly bad dream. The happiness that showed on her face when he would prove that it wasn't a dream made all the work worth it.

Now she was dreaming again, and he was sure it had something to do with him talking to Kikyo.

Maybe I should have said something before just going to her.

Inuyasha went back to their room and retrieved their futon. He carried it back to Shippo's room and spread it next to the one Kagome was occupying. He gently eased Kagome out of one futon and into the other. He picked up the old one and replaced it in the closet. With that he dragged the new futon next to Shippo's and crawled in. He curled up next to her, wrapping an arm around her swollen belly. He put his nose up to her neck and breathed her scent, strongly laced with the pregnant smell.

Inuyasha stayed awake most of the night, stroking, whispering, and comforting his nightmare-plagued mate. She clung to him as though sensing that he was there and determined not to lose him to her monsters. He bathed her in kisses and licks whenever she whimpered and snuggled to him.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

Kagome woke with a start, her heart still in pain from the dreams she had relived throughout the night. She whimpered and closed her eyes, trying to stop the tears. She started when she felt a gentle tongue licking away the droplets on her cheek. Her eyes flew open and fell upon amber eyes staring right into hers. She whimpered again and closed her eyes. She heard a soft whine and felt gentle claws running through her hair.

She reached out and latched onto his shoulder, pulling herself up to rest against his chest. She felt his strong arms wrap around her and hold her close. Kagome shifted so that she could rest more comfortably against him. She was still angry with him, but right now she just wanted comfort from her mate.

Inuyasha rubbed her back, trying to relax her. He felt her soft body molding into his harder one. She cuddled into him and relaxed. Inuyasha in turn relaxed and cuddled her as well.

“Kagome, I uh, I shouldn't have been angry at you. You aren't fat, well, I mean, you are, but normally you're not, but you look really amazing like this, but not fat…”

Kagome giggled. Even though she was mad at him, he had obviously cared for her during the night and was currently quite cute stumbling all over himself. She reached up and stroked his cheek, stopping his senseless flow of words.

“It's alright.” She said. “By the way, we need to get a new spare futon.”

Inuyasha chuckled and nuzzled her. “Why? You're not going to use it again.”

Kagome smiled warmly. “What about this little one? When they get older they're going to need a futon. I'm sure you don't want to share me with your new child.”

Inuyasha frowned. “Of course I'll let you love the pup, but my bed only is open to you.”

Kagome raised her eyebrows. “Ohhh. And what if one of them has a nightmare and wants to crawl in with us?”

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. “I guess.” He allowed.

Kagome smiled. Inuyasha could be really cute sometimes, not that she would ever tell him that.

Inuyasha sighed. He knew he needed to talk to Kagome about Kikyo, but he really didn't want to break the happy mood.

He took a deep breath and went for the plunge. “Kagome, I went to see Kikyo yesterday.”

Kagome's face fell and she sighed softly. She began to ease off his lap, but he tightened his hold and buried his face in her hair.

“Listen all the way?”

Kagome looked up at him and seemed to consider it, but nodded.

“She's gone. It was getting too hard for her to keep going like she was, so she has returned to the afterlife. She asked for one last embrace, and I couldn't just turn her down. For old times' sake, I guess. But now it's just you and me. And Shippo, and Miroku, and Sango, and Kirara, and maybe Kaede…”

Kagome sighed and nodded. “It's alright. I understand.”

Inuyasha frowned, figuring that the grudge she held couldn't have been so easily thrown aside. He knew if Kagome even looked at Koga or that boy from her time he'd probably start destroying stuff.

Kagome leaned back against him, deciding to let it go. She hadn't ever wanted to seem jealous or accusing of him, so she had never brought it up. Besides, Inuyasha had been nothing but totally loving to her, even if it was a little too much sometimes, she never had a reason to suspect him.

Inuyasha nudged her, and she looked up at him. He reached down and nipped her mark, causing her to shiver and sigh in his arms.

“It was just a friendly hug.” He said simply. “ I can safely say we have much more that that.”

“Really?” Kagome muttered. Inuyasha pulled her up and released her, leaving her standing. He then awkwardly reached around her belly and hugged her. It was brief and only half hearted.

He grinned. “That was a friendly hug, Kagome.”

Kagome shrugged and grinned. “So, how would you greet me?”

Inuyasha chuckled. “Kaede says we aren't allowed to do that until after you give birth.”

Kagome blushed and looked away. “That was an embarrassing conversation.”

Inuyasha sighed solemnly. “Such tragic news as well.”

He immediately crashed into the ground as Kagome pummeled him. “Is that all I'm good for? Feel free to go out into the woods and pleasure yourself from now on.”

Inuyasha shielded his head from most of the angry blows, and managed to make a run for it, hightailing it out of the hut.

Once outside he took quick, sharp breaths. “Kagome is scary when she's mad.”

He sighed. He had to go make peace with his mate, and probably should go convince Miroku that nothing was wrong.

“I've got a long day ahead of me, don't I?”

I did say I would be sporadic. That still stands. -Akihana
